Dude. This is a stellar review. The historical narrative is awesome and insanely informative, and your notes on the whiskey itself are mouthwatering. Absolutely killer work.
Glad to see a review of this. Thanks. I'm a big fan. I have one open now that's 101.2 proof and it's amazing. But, as single barrels, these can be all over the place. I had a bottle that had a very strong bitter oak note in the finish which was off putting. But, a friend gave me a sample of an 82 proof that was amazing - actually better than the 100+ proof ones I've had. These 80 - 84 proof expressions are close to cask strength and just come from barrels that lost proof during aging due to cool and damp location in the rickhouse. Thus, can be packed with flavor despite the low proof. So, don't shy away from the lower proof versions of this. Cheers!
I love how you always incorporate a lot of history in your reviews. This one, in particular, was very detailed. I'll have to check this out, if I can find a bottle.
Great review dude! i was reading on reddit how bourbon fans were debating this one...feels like alot of folks were pre-judging based on history with other dickel products. Glad to see you came in and provided a nice history (i LOVE when you give whiskey history!!!) and a great review. These days anything that drops in limited quantities gets gobbled up fast around here, but if i trip over a bottle of Dickel 15, im gonna be owning that bottle of Dickel 15. Cheers sir!!!
My favorite Reviewer on You Tube- great review. This is an excellent whisky and even the lower ABV carries tons of flavor and a spicey finish. I also notice that the vitamin note really tones down after a couple of weeks.
Jason I just got a bottle last night. Can’t find it in New Jersey but was bought in Tennessee and delivered. Now I know what I’m in for. Thanks for your continued good work.
Thank you for all this history Jason, your videos are so great and informative! Picked this up today, -in Illinois- got the 51%abv, it’s great. Complex, spicy, fruity.
Absolutely amazing. I admit, I was sceptical at first but it's such a smooth sipper. Mine came in at 93.4 proof and really hit the sweet spot in my opinion. Hopefully I'll come across this again at a higher proof to compare. Great content Jason and appreciate the history lessons and insight. Cheers sir!
I just picked up a bottle at 96.2 proof/48.1.......it's absolutely amazing!!! Passed on it because of the name, huge mistake. I went back and bought 2 more. This bottle is an absolute gem that is constantly overlooked.
Excellent review! Years ago I had a 14yr store select for $40 that was even richer. Then, disappointed by every bottle since and THIS is darn close with regular availability. I will be picking up 2 more bottles next week. Cheers!
I have the 52.3% and love it! I have more Kentucky whiskey in my cabinet but have a deep appreciation for Dickel with the 15-year at the top of those I have tried. In addition to the notes that you mentioned, I get a note of leather and tobacco in the bottle that I bought and feel this gives it a uniqueness that really sets it apart from the crowd!
Blue Note out of Memphis uses 9/10-year barrel proof Dickel for its store picks and I think they’re awesome. Even more than the age, I feel like the elevated proof does wonders for Dickel.
Found the 104.6 proof on sale for $51 in E. Tennessee and got 3 bottles since I've been a fan of the BiB releases and I couldn't believe 15 year-old whisky was that inexpensive. Cinnamon, orange, clove, burnt brown sugar, creaminess all backed up by the oak. Wonderful dram.
It’s here in Illinois! Local shop just got it in today. What perfect timing to go along with your video. 93.4 proof and I’m enjoying it. Would definitely get another bottle so long as I find one at a higher proof to see how it differs. I plan to taste it against both the 11yr and 13yr bib offerings.
I appreciate all the background. I've only got one bottle of Dickel, a 9 year old 103 proof single barrel that I bought 5 years ago. Sounds like I should pop that cork and buy one of these to keep it company. I'm surprised they are releasing some of these at 80 proof, I would avoid those too.
Gross. That Flintstone vitamin is just nasty. I just got a barrell craft store pick. I got excited because its a 14yr for $90. I should have read more of the bottle. Wasnt until i got home i noticed its only 90prf eventhough it says cask strength, and also didnt realize its only Tennessee distillate. Usually barrell craft is a blend of TN, KY, IN, and they're usually really good. This one is just straight dickel and not very good. I cant believe the store would pick this out of other barrell craft barrells. Very disappointing to pay $90 for straight dickel.
Excellent informative video, as usual! Sipping this very whiskey as I watch. I get that chocolate note, now that you mention it! A friend GAVE me an almost-full bottle of 15 year SB after he decided he couldn't get past the notorious Flintstones vitamin flavor note. (Needless to say, he is a great friend!). I can get past it, especially with some good ole present moment awareness practice. LOL. If you let yourself go, you smell that chocolate, bananas, and fermented fruit instead. I have had several bottles of Dickel BiB. Sooo good. In my opinion, Dickel is offering some of the best value for money on the market. 13 year old 100 proof whiskey for $43??? They are doing it right! Love the bottle design across their entire line, especially the single barrel.
Great breakdown! I've recently become a Dickel fan, thanks to the BiB releases, have a bottle of this 15yr SB, but haven't opened it yet. This video makes me want to Crack it open right now!
Just finished a bottle of Dickel 9yr. It’s excellent! The GD 12 is a buddy of mine’s daily sipper. Also, bought the Rye. It’s fantastic! I’ll be grabbing another bottle of 9yr and I’ll look for the 15yr. Great video and cheers!
Got a bottle a few days ago... a friend of mine found it for me on his lunch break in Columbus. My bottle clocks in at 80 proof, though, which is a bummer, but I'm looking forward to reviewing it soon! This was a great video and I enjoyed the history of the brand.
I never tried any Dickle products, but a friend said that the local store had a 15 year store pick single barrel Dickle, so i tried it, 60 bucks. For the price this is an AMAZING value. I was waiting for that strong minerality, but was surprised, i had to search for the flavor, but i did find what everyone talks about... im OK with it, its like a chewable vitamin taste, but its on the back end and it fits. Stright or on the rocks, baby Old Fashioned, this bottle is great!!!
I know it isn't cool to say you like Dickel, but I do. I've been drinking it off and on for about 25 years. Tan label No. 12 only. I haven't had it for a year or so, but recently found a bottle in the back of a cabinet. I cracked it last night and it was just as I remembered: a wonderful little 'orange creamsicle' sipper. I bought a bottle of the 15-year today and am expecting good things.
I just got two bottles of a 52.3% barrel that is 17 years old. Easily one of the best bottles of whiskey I've ever tasted. This barrel program is definitely going to be one to keep watching for!
@@TheReal_DeanD You bet, brotha! Yeah, it was definitely a great pick. Low yield barrel, just about 100 bottles out of it. Nursing my bottle as long as I can.
So glad they have gotten rid of the Flinstone vitamin flavor in their previous products. I bought a couple bottles and have to say it is really good. Hard to find a 15 year whiskey for $60. The 9 year is also very good although I prefer this one over that. Great Vid Jason C. Keep doing what you do!
Did you get a bottle of the OHLQ single barrel pick a few months ago? 9 year 103 proof. My first bottle of Dickel. I was so impressed with it, I went in the next day and bought another. So good. Toasty, but not smokey. Very warm and cozy. I love it. It's my first bottle of Dickel, but I will definitely try more now.
Have been drinking this brand since 1978. It's affordable and tastes away better that jack! Was in the service with a guy from Tennessee his father worked for Dickel and gave away some secrets that has to do with the taste over jack. And I prefer higher proof in all the whisky I drink. I may have to order this if I can. It's a crime this brand didn't do better than others but I'm a fan.
just got the 9 year single barrel but its actually 14.5 years old 96 proof and its exceptional, they had a 15 year that was 17 yr and 4 months old but it was only 86 proof so i went with the other for only 45$!!
Woo hoo! I just found the 52.3% for $65. What stinks is I was only able to get one bottle. I guess I’ll be savoring this one. Appreciate the thoroughness and fairness of the review as well as the full history. I also think that what people are paying for The blends with Dickel juice at a higher price or just really biased against George.
I picked up a bottle last week. I'm not big on Dickel but a 15 year old for $55 (in California) I couldn't pass it up. Looking forward to opening it this weekend.
Happy hour in Cookeville Tennessee has a store pick of this that I just bought. I love it. Still has the 15 year label but was barreled on 9-11-2003 and was just bottled. I don't get much of the mineral aspect that you talked about but everything else was spot on. I'd buy this for 60 bucks over and over.
My current favorite Whiskey in my budget. What other 15 year can you get for $65 (Central Florida). I have a novice pallet but I think Widow Jane has this is their blend. Dickel 15 is amazing for me. Great review! Thank you
Thanks for another awesome review Jason and great whiskey-history lesson. Do you know when they changed the labels of No 12 and No 8? I remember I had one of those older label No 12s back in 2016 through about 2018...Also...5+ years ago I could have sworn Dickel had a different mash bill than today. Old was 91% corn and now it is 84% corn.
I grabbed a bottle of this b/c I really enjoyed their bottled in bond. Got mine at 46.7% (Long Island, NY). Had no idea this release varied in proof so much!
Ended up with a lower proof of this and you are correct, it has a bit more that "Dickel" flavor profile that some are off-put by. Personally, I enjoy the Dickel flavor profile. I much prefer it over others that taste like a bowl of peanuts :D This 15 year is terrific and even at 43% range, it's still a terrific whiskey for the price. Would have loved a higher proof offering, but being in nowheresville, WI; I was just happy to find it at all.
Was wondering about this. Grabbed the Barrel Select NAS couple years ago and wasn’t that impressed considering the price point. Solid history lesson too, thanks Jason cheers 💯🥃

Ok Jason . GF saw a single bottle of this and I looked up your review while she was at the store. The one in Oregon is 101 proof so I told her higher proof - Jason said get it at $60. So it’s on its way home. 🤞I’ll let you know lol
Thanks for the review. I just picked up a bottle and noticed that it is Bottle #1. Not sure if that means anything special. Does it mean Bottle 1 for that barrel or of the release? There is no Barrel ID that I can find.
I had this yesterday and wholeheartedly agree with the notes. It does have the mineral note. Hoity toity bourbon drinkers see it as "arriving" when they can identify the mineral note and reject the bourbon as "Dickel." As long as the minerality isn't out of hand, it doesn't bother me. That note is on this, but it is not a major note and there is more depth of flavor than many of the 15 years put out by NDP's and 2X and 3X the price. This is less than Booker's! Yeah I just got my hands on one and I’m blown away WOW i’m getting like an orange peel cinnamon pie. Wow this is like in my top three in my whole damn collection
Having me a glass of some Dickel Rye right now with a cigar. Delicious stuff and I picked up a few bottles for $12.20 each. I have yet to find a better deal on another whiskey.
Just had the the 42% ABV and it's not bad but would definitely like a higher proof on this. Getting a lot of cherry almond vanilla on my bottle though so that's pleasant.
Dude. This is a stellar review. The historical narrative is awesome and insanely informative, and your notes on the whiskey itself are mouthwatering. Absolutely killer work.
I picked this up because of this video, knowing I don’t usually like dickel, and now I have to go back to the store tomorrow to get another

My brother grabbed a bottle in Memphis, he didn't like it so he gave it to me. I think it is some good juice!
George dickle 15 or jack daniels single barrel barrel proof..please reply im tryin to snag one today and your opinion is one i can trust
The dickle 15 my store has is only 46.5%
Just had the the 42% ABV and it's not bad but would definitely like a higher proof on this. Getting a lot of cherry almond vanilla on my bottle though so that's pleasant.
