This Predator, as you probably know, is a Subspecies to the other predators seen in the series. Their actual species name being Yautja, which I cannot pronounce. The older films showcases the foresty jungle predators while this one is more arid desert, hence why he’s more tan and lean and uses more “old school” weapons like dart launchers and a shield blade. Less efficient but more ceremonial or traditional. The dog also I believe was adopted specifically for this movie since she’s a similar breed to what would exist at the time, but since they were so good during initial filming they decided to put her in more scenes and she’s great, good girl.
I wouldn't say that he is a "subspecies," exactly, because that kinda implies some kind of hierarchy. He's the same species (Hish-qu-Ten/Yautja), just from a different continent. 😊

I’m a biology student and we talked a lot about this movie when it came out. The Feral Predator is from a different biome of the Yautja homeworld as stated by the director. It’s essentially a desert predator rather than the subspecies that evolved in the tropical jungle biome. As a result of less cover from their planets’ two suns, this subspecies evolved darker and more scaly skin to protect against UV rays, similar to humans in Africa developing higher melanin content for the same purpose. The scales it has are possibly due to the desert environment demanding more pronounced reptilian traits to survive as well. This subspecies also has a different shaped head with more powerful jaws due to bone being a staple of it’s diet and based on the mask, a cultural aspect. The overly aggressive and more savage behavior could be explained by the sheer lack of food in such a sun-baked wasteland, requiring the Ferals to essentially take “eat it while it’s still there” to the next level. Another speculation made by my professor is that if a similarity to human evolution could be drawn, this type of Yautja could be the progenitor of the species, with the more well known classical Predators being the result of ancestors that migrated to more dense jungle habitat, allowing the cream-colored and more clammy skin that they possess.
This would've been amazing to see on the big screen! The cinematography, the score, the sound design, characters you actually want to root for... sooo underrated.

I like the idea of adjusting the Predator weapon tech based on where the Predators are in their own timeline and technological advancement, but I also like the idea that Predators just have different weapons of choice. Take the first movie where Jesse the body was the guy who had the chain gun. Maybe there's a predator who likes the chain gun, you know? We don't necessarily need a complex lore reason for the weapons to be different aside from "this predator thinks pistols akimbo is rad". It's just that easy. The one thing you guys almost said so many times, which is what I always say about this film, is that this Predator (like the first movie) is not afraid to TAKE ITS TIME. It doesn't barrage you with an endless stream of spectacle. At least not at first. It strings you along and makes you expect it and wait for it, and it sustains that expectation and suspense via "bomb under the table" for a long time, and so it's very interesting that so much of the first half of the movie is very chill, sort of slow, a lot of scenes with not only no action, but no dialogue. That almost feels ballsy in 2022. But it works so great, and makes the later action and chaos feel so much more explosive. Cheers, guys.
The Predator in this movie doesn't have more "primitive" tech than the first one because it's a couple hundred years ago - they have interstellar travel. I will 100% give this movie my suspension of disbelief regarding the hatchet-on-a-string weapon (and some dodgy CGI here and there), because this was a fucking amazing ride! Right up there with the original, and easily the second-best of the series. I only noticed this on rewatch, but it looks like this Predator is deliberately matching the rough 'type' of weapon it is fighting against with each prey to what it is willing to use in response (*very* broadly construed, such as a bronze-era sling and an AK-47 both being projectile type weapons). Against tooth-and-claw animals (the snake, wolf, and bear), it only uses its retractable claw weapon; once the Comanche use hatchets and bows and arrows against the Predator, it starts using its spear and dart projectiles; once the French use a net and bear traps, it answers with the constricting net that shreds people and the slice-and-dice floating mines. I really appreciate the thought and care that went into this film, in terms of when it adds something really new and fresh (like the Comanche perspective), when it just leans into being a rule-of-cool action movie, and when it cashes in on the nostalgia ("if it bleeds...").
In the sequel to Predator, they show that they have technology to cycle through different spectrums of vision. Perhaps the first Predator didn't have that technology at the time or just thought it wouldn't need it.
The straight to streaming gimmick was solely political. All the contracts and whatnot were drawn up before the Disney acquisition of Fox, so the deal was that after it's theatrical run, HBO Max (I *think*?) would be first in line to get the exclusive first run on streaming. After Disney bought out Fox, they went "Oh yeah? After *what* theatrical run?", went straight to their own Hulu, went "fuck yoooooouuuuuuuu!" and that was that.

@@rickyd-lux9067 Of course not. Given there nearly 8 billion people on this planet, I wouldn't expect everyone to share the same perspective or opinion. But you need only search the net to see this is not a singular opinion. Be well.
Also, probably my favorite thing about this movie is how well it works as a drama. You could literally replace the Predator with any other creature or monster or adversary, sci-fi or magical or whatever, and still tell Naru's story. In that sense, it's as good or better than the original film for what it is vs. what an Arnold action-hero 80s action film is. It's also fascinating to see the Luke Skywalker monomyth play out with a female character, which gives it its legendary, epic feel, and really earns that ending, where she comes back home not only victorious, but changed. She started out wanting to hunt to prove something to her tribe; when she comes back she has become her tribe's protector. (And, it's also ALSO amazing that it manages to insert social commentary about gender roles AND colonialism, to boot.)
OMG yes. I saw predator and predator 2 on TBS when I was kid. They played it twice on TV back to back on a Saturday night. I was up until 3am watching both movies twice.
Nice cultural note - in most Plains Indian cultures, it is very, very taboo to whistle at night (Amber Midthunder even refused to do it on set - she mimed the act and a stagehand actually whistled). It’s believed to let evil entities know where you are. Naru breaks this taboo to lure the Predator in, making it pretty appropriate in context. Edit: Also the Metal Gear Solid thing SLEW me 😂
First time ive enjoyed a discussion with dude bros. Usually they rant endlessly about wOkE mOvIeS but this was a fun convo with great points wish i could have been a part of it
This is the story of a stubborn teenager who disobeyed her family & her tribe then got several of them killed including her brother because they were always looking for and looking after her out in the field. She was ultimately a distraction and a liability to the squad.
That was an awesome reaction to an awesome movie! I completely agree with your assessment and analysis of this really good, interesting, unique film. It's exactly what this franchise needed. I totally agree with everything y'all pointed out, from the structure, to the storytelling, and the intelligent prowess of the protagonist. This was just really well-made all around. Dan Tractenberg did a really great job. I agree that this is just right below the original Predator, but just before Predator 2 as far as how good it is. It's really disappointing to see people hating on this movie just because it has a female lead. It doesn't focus the whole storyline in the fact that she's a woman, it's just the reality of the situation. This movie isn't pandering or Woke, it's so much more than that. There's nothing wrong with a female lead as long as they aren't bashing you over the head with it, I mean just look at how it was done right with Ellen Ripley from Aliens and Sarah Connor from Terminator 2. Great explanation of the film, guys. From now on if I encounter someone bashing this movie because of their preconceived notions, I'm going to refer them to this video because you guys explained it perfectly.
The people bitching and moaning about this movie being "woke" for having a female lead have been awfully quiet as of late 😂 for a bunch of self-proclaimed Alphas, they sure hate women 🤣
I was thinking the Predator was using weapons similar to its prey. It used claws for the animals and "arrows" for the humans. Sort of some way to "level" the playing field.
The only negative thing I can say about this movie is the return to sender tomahawk. Because that's a hell NO from anyone that's ever thrown anything edged with a handle. 50/50 taking off your hand as much as catching it.
Btw the termo-vision is natural to the predators. They actually see this way. The mask just massively enhances it and it also filters the atmosphere so they could breath better.
I keep saying I don't think it's that the Predators don't HAVE the plasma cannon tech, I think they equip themselves with weapons in the style or scale of whats available to the planets top dog, which in my mind would fit with their motivations.
This movie is fun. It's a fresh direction on a franchise that was tired, with the setting (and of course casting actual Native Americans in the roles). You're right, the dudes who are complaining about the protagonist being a girl are just being salty. Yeah, she's inexperienced and does some dumb stuff (but so does the Predator - it clearly gets mad and acts rashly too). But I liked how they showed how she was observant and learned from every encounter - in the end, after her brother had hurt it, she was able to finish it off by using strategy based on all the things she had seen and learned over the movie. Also, I loved the bit when she whistles to attract the Predator when she had the gross French trapper for bait - whistling at night is taboo in a lot of cultures because it calls evil spirits or monsters.
from the comic books and canon - the predators have been coming to earth for thousands of years. They help civilizations advance and "level up" so they can hunt them. They love adversaries that can match them. There are even instances of humans, who impress the Predator hierarchy so much, they become part of the Yautja civilization. Machiko Noguchi is one of the main ones.
loved the everloving shit out of this movie. they know the audience has seen the first one and they're playing with expectations w/o being sarcastic or too emulative. genius
I'm not sure if you caught it. The end credits showed the complete story up to and past the end of the movie. The final scene were THREE predator spaceships arriving, did you catch it?
Keep saying “feudal Japan,” and I get that, but feudal China is the way to go: Get wire-works involved and a Chinese theatrical release and you make enough money to fund another two or three sequels 🤷🏻♀️ just a thought. WWI would be cool, but what about the Napoleonic Wars and in New Zealand The Predator vs. The Māori, (dunno if y’all seen AMC’s The Dead lands.)
Predator 2 is the best sequel of the franchise for the lore, the culture and weapons of the Predator. Prey is a good movie, but is prequel of Predator 1.

The only thing I think brings this movie down for me is the very end where she returns with the head and is greeted with smiles etc. That village has just had an entire generation of their young hunters/warriors slaughtered, a massive loss for everyone. Half of the people there probably just lost their sons. The first question should be "Where are the other hunters?" followed by the devastated reaction of parents when they find out their children have died. Compare that to the end of the original Predator where it's a sombre ending showing Dutch on 'da choppa' looking defeated as he's processing what's just happened and the loss of all of his teammates. No triumphalism at all.

We did just by inference. I don’t think that’s the strength of the franchise. As soon as you start to investigate you get hokey SciFi bullshit, like Jaws/Halloween/Alien it’s a simple premise executed very skillful and creatively

This is hands down my favorite movie this year. I can’t get enough of it.
alex is dressed in black sneakin around behind you … good reason confirmed
fucking covid man. But he rocked HEAT and The Crow with us which was so much fun and incoming!
"An indigenous people thing, huh?" The sweetest cinnamon roll. 💞
TBS Superstation reference was hilarious.
I'm always here for a Herschel Walker dig!
I like that even though the Predator had its camo on, the snake was still able to tell where he was, because it could sense his heat.
I miss the HoTD reactions already, this is cool.
10:36 -It looks like -*-Sean-*- has mistaken -*-Amber Midthunder-*- for -*-Aubrey Plaza.-* -He's not the first to do so, and I imagine he won't be the last.- 🥴 Oops. My mistake. Not only does *Amber Midthunder* look _a lot_ like *Aubrey Plaza,* but *Amber* stars in *_Legion_* along with *Aubrey.* 🤦🏼♂️
I'm digging the trio's attempts to anticipate everything. 😁
I really wish they didn't include the gun. At least, not in this way. IMO they wrote themselves into a corner by having it end up with the tribe.
MVP, her brother *Taabe,* easily! And I just saw this quote: _"When Dakota Beavers (Taabe) auditioned for _*_"Prey,"_*_ he was under the impression he'd be getting a small part in his first on-screen role."_ What a debut!
*EDIT:* I like the potential of not just different times and places in history, but also going into the future, a la _Aliens._
Finally, great soundtrack IMO.

18:11 “rope dart/ kunai”, but more generally a weaponized mass on the end of a rope is “meteor hammer”
Edit: Also the Metal Gear Solid thing SLEW me 😂
It's actually way more historically accurate than you may think!
First time ive enjoyed a discussion with dude bros. Usually they rant endlessly about wOkE mOvIeS but this was a fun convo with great points wish i could have been a part of it
Dope reaction fellas!
Appreciate ya!!
I will freely admit: I was suspicious of Prey, thinking it would be obnoxious. I'm happy to say how wrong I was. I loved this film.
Naru is up there with Toph Beifong and Ellen Ripley as one of my favorites for strong female sci fi characters.
They filmed it on location in Calgary Alberta, Canada.
The people bitching and moaning about this movie being "woke" for having a female lead have been awfully quiet as of late 😂 for a bunch of self-proclaimed Alphas, they sure hate women 🤣
being from Hawaii.. I totally approve of the ALOHA shirt
There is one short fan film called Predator dark ages that has this sort of idea, a Predator against some Templar knights
I was thinking the Predator was using weapons similar to its prey. It used claws for the animals and "arrows" for the humans. Sort of some way to "level" the playing field.
Amber also played the younger sister in the series Roswell.
The only negative thing I can say about this movie is the return to sender tomahawk. Because that's a hell NO from anyone that's ever thrown anything edged with a handle. 50/50 taking off your hand as much as catching it.
Oh yeah. Realistic? Fuck no. Is it Assassins Creed bullshit physics badassery, definitely.
Omg Scott is back! 😍. He’s beautiful. Oh and yeah Prey kicks ass and is one of if not the best sequel in the Predator franchise.
IS THAT CAPTAIN AMERICA?
Loved the movie and your reactions!
Scott(left one) looks like Jamie Dornan
guy in the middle was me the whole movie 😭😭
Btw the termo-vision is natural to the predators. They actually see this way. The mask just massively enhances it and it also filters the atmosphere so they could breath better.
my fave Predator film ♥
30:56 "Get to the clopper"
loved the everloving shit out of this movie. they know the audience has seen the first one and they're playing with expectations w/o being sarcastic or too emulative. genius
Predator VS a Roman Legion
BOGWATCH 2022 BAY-BEEEE WHOOOOOOOO!
Yo is that Bam Margera in the middle?! 😂
Predator 2 is the best sequel of the franchise for the lore, the culture and weapons of the Predator.
Prey is a good movie, but is prequel of Predator 1.
If you watch the animated credits until the end, you'll see that more Predator space ships came from the sky to attack the tribe
YES it's back!
There are so many differences in the way this film is made, than the ways it would have been made in the past. Hollywood has changed.
Love it subverted a lot of your earlier predictions. Part of why it was so good. They did the expected, but also a lot of unexpected things.
you have to check out the batman vs predator comics...
I’ve read some in the 90s!!!
@@SeanTanktop I'm still waiting for my childhood dream come true and we get a (BATMAN VS PREDATOR MOVIE)!!!!!!!

I did wonder at the end of this movie, how does the old alien from Predator 2 get the gun back?
Also, I’d love to see a Civil War era Predator :)
He talk like his teeth falling out 🤣🤣
Do a Drinking game for how many times the different appearance and different technology level of a predator that appears 250 years before any others is mentioned.
The leashed axe IS something that the Native Americans could have done but no they were never known" to actually do that kinda stuff in any battles or hunts
She actually really learned to do that, too.
EXELENTE AMIGOS.. GRACIAS X EL VIDEO.Y COMENTARIOS . SALUDOS DESDE ARGENTINA..
They tried to call the movie woke but once it came out everyone loved it so they dropped that narrative.
"Yt mufuxas did this!!" 🤣🤣 Yup, fur traders
The only thing I think brings this movie down for me is the very end where she returns with the head and is greeted with smiles etc. That village has just had an entire generation of their young hunters/warriors slaughtered, a massive loss for everyone. Half of the people there probably just lost their sons. The first question should be "Where are the other hunters?" followed by the devastated reaction of parents when they find out their children have died.
Compare that to the end of the original Predator where it's a sombre ending showing Dutch on 'da choppa' looking defeated as he's processing what's just happened and the loss of all of his teammates. No triumphalism at all.
if there was one scene where Naru like made a promise to the tribe to avenge their deaths etc it'd emotionally track.
Pretty sure there was an earlier scene where Naru's mother learned of her son and the others dying.
The dog is herding the dear towards her
#1. Arnold is Arnold. The original. Predator
#2. Prey. Its right there with Predator...oh so close.
#3. Predators. Dropped on a foreign world!!! Imho excellent.
#4. Predator 2.
Tied #5. The two Alien vs Predator movies
Ignore the 4th one. Thought it was mostly weak/poor.
I just want a predator movie where we get more lore on the predator...
We did just by inference. I don’t think that’s the strength of the franchise. As soon as you start to investigate you get hokey SciFi bullshit, like Jaws/Halloween/Alien it’s a simple premise executed very skillful and creatively
You should watch the end Credits Where the rest of the predator ships came the Earth to collect the head and the gun.
19:32 😂😂😂
Yes I agree Sean! Best predator movie!
Love this film.
There needs to be more Predator movies like Prey. Just put the Predator in a different time period and have a ball.
