  • Round 2! I am back with a faster 486 (Yes, an Am5x86 counts!! Fight me!)
    Can I manage to install windows ME onto a 486 class PC and run any programs or games? Well certainly not without any stress!

    A noble attampt! I might have to try this at some point🤔

      You should! But only with a known stable system :D

    Ahhhh the trials we used to have to go through. I loved 98SE and XP back in the day, but ME just always gave me problems.

      I actually held on to 98se for quite a while before trusting the jump to XP. Same again when 7 came out (lets ignore vista existed)

      @LJRRetroPCs yes, I agree! 8 was poor too, but 10 and 11 I like.

      I could not get my head around 8 at all! I agree on 10 and 11. Not sure why 11 gets so much hate its not entirely different to 10.

      @@ljrretropcs I think that Win 11 are hated because of requirements. There is no real need for TPM2, processor newer than i8xxx or Ryzen 1, but Microsoft did it.

    My 486 DX4 at 100MHz has 64MB Ram, a 3dfx Voodoo Rush, USB controller card, and a 32GB SD card as hard drive. An AWE64 card takes care of the good sound. I've even managed to get a GeForce 2 MX running with the 486. Unfortunately, however, the 3D mode with this card no longer works with 486. And you can only use DirectX7, anything newer doesn't support 486 anymore. Voodoo works, but slowly. Don't expect much. Best regards, Chris

      Hey Chris. Very interesting stuff that! It’s amazing how far we can push these 486s now. I had wondered if it was viable to fit a voodoo. Did it make GLQuake playable on the 486?

      @@ljrretropcs I tested the QuakeGL today with a Voodoo Rush on the 486DX4 at 100MHz.
      The game started and was playable.
      However, there were significant drops in performance as soon as opponents appeared.
      You can play it, but you'll have to sacrifice performance.
      This moves at 640 x 480 and 16 bit color at approx. 30 FPS with little action, but if opponents appear, the frame rate drops to up to 10 FPS.

    Back in the Day, I crashed out AMD DX4-100 with a Bootlegg Copy of WinME
    We had to lug the Tower from Detroit down to Nashville TN area to have my Uncle Serial into the system and copy our files off of it lol

    I have seen where this road leads.
    It leads to, _"I rebuilt Colossus, the 1943 code-breaking computer from Bletchley Park! Now to see if I can install and run Crysis on it!"_
    The answer is invariably a fully expected "Nope. What was I thinking?".
    As any musician will tell you, "Never do what the audience wants you to do. The audience are by and large, idiots. Idiots who will request Oasis' 'Wonderwall' to be played simply so they can moan about Oasis' 'Wonderwall' being played."

    Crazy how much Windows Me sucks. Windows 2000 installed and runs with almost no crashes on my similarly specced 486 (AM486-120, 64MB RAM, S3 ViRGE, SB16 ISA) - even running the tightest memory and cache timings - although turning off any OCing would be my first instinct if experiencing crashes on a difficult workload (same goes for modern HW)

    • @ljrretropcs
      @ljrretropcs  Рік тому +1

      Its crazy that it was the last thing I thought to address! I had used this pc for hours and hours in windows 95 and dos with no problems at all so I was confident it was OK!

    • @smeezekitty
      @smeezekitty Рік тому +1

      @@ljrretropcs Windows 95 and DOS were probably not using instructions likely to execute incorrectly with the OC.
      They were written to run on 386 and 8088's so they would be less likely to use newer instructions that the 486 provides
      Maybe you just need some LN2 ;)

      You are probably right! Although I did just see a crash in dungeon keeper 95 at 160! I will stick with 133 until I have time to mess with the voltage.

      @@ljrretropcs Good luck! I subbed! If you're interested, you can see I managed to get Simcity 3000 and The Sims 1 (with a patched executable) running on my AM486-120 and Windows 2000. Obviously very slowly but that's a huge load on a 486 class machine. The CPU speed is stock but the PCI bus is being OC'd to 40MHz due to the nature of the CPU's 40MHz FSB.
      How are you cooling your CPU btw? I fit an AM2 cooler to mine without a fan and it it only runs warm to the touch without a fan despite the CPU saying "Fan Req'd"

    • @ljrretropcs
      @ljrretropcs  Рік тому +1

      @smeezekitty Thanks! You were number 500 I think 😀
      I just watched you running the sims on a 486. Thats been something I have tried several times but had no idea how work much it needed to do that! Great effort! The 40mhz bus does really make a difference for the VGA and even for the caches and ram. I can notice the difference just on the desktop with mine now being at 33. Its being cooled with a socket 7 cooler that I have attached to it. 4 small dabs of superglue in each corner and some thermal paste in the middle. The glue is enough to hold it on but not so much that it cant ever be removed.

    When you overclock a CPU, the cooling needs to be upgraded, overclocking produces more heat and may very well be your problem.
