    Honestly, looking at the original build video, I think the older case is somewhat higher quality than the newer full tower case, and I like it better visually. But I'm a sucker for a short and chunky mini-tower case.. Pity about the cheddar cheese yellowing though. It might be worth a try to retrobright the front plastics. Don't toss it! AT cases are getting really hard to find.
    I remember being told once that PC Chips didn't manufacture all of their own motherboards, they subbed some of them out, so consequently you get differing build qualities, and they didn't really get terrible until the Socket 5/7 timeframe. Your board looks a lot nicer than most of them I remember.
    You used to be able to buy beige Lite-on LTN-486 CD drives for almost the cost of shipping when the beige Dell office class machines were in the cycle for scrapping after coming off lease and EOL, They were excellent for builds like this. A fast 48X drive that didn't have any writing on the front to detract from it's plain-jane design, so it blended in perfectly with older builds. Alas, the days of buying them at $20 for 5 units, shipped is long gone.
    Have you looked at Atheatos and Necroware's videos on factory BIOS modding? I suspect that with a little bit of tweaking you can get rid of the 2GB limit in that BIOS, and get it up to either 32GB or 128GB. Either of which would be overkill for a Windows 95 486 machine. Not to mention, you might be able to unlock some more tuning settings that the manufacturer has hidden.
    It's always nice watching someone else build a vintage PC, I get to experience it vicariously, without any of the sheet metal cuts on the fingers or failed or inexplicably incompatible hardware. Good job flogging this one until it bent to your will!

      The smaller case was certainly not a bad one! Just not to my taste and very cramped inside. It had also taken a knock when it was delivered to me originally and it was constantly on my mind that the insides were not "perfect"!
      Dont worry I will never throw away any old hardware!
      I have watched both those vids on bios mods! Great vids but I am yet to buy a programmer so its not easy for me to do! (I have hot swapped them in the past with success!)
      Thanks for taking the time out to watch the vid and share your thoughts on it! I am very happy it eventually worked out. I think I might do a part 2 in future once there has been a few changes. Perhaps some retrobrite and a new VGA card or even perhaps sound.

    Forgive me if someone else has already commented this. With those older PC cases, like that, you usually had to remove the front bezel before installing the drives. That's why they were tight going in and protrude like that. Sweet machine, though. My first PC was a 486dx2 66MHz. I would love to build another one to have now.

    • @ljrretropcs
      @ljrretropcs  Рік тому

      I have had some cases like that, but with this one I am sure its just that the drives are slightly bigger as I did have one that fit in lovely, it just didnt work! :))

    Sorry to hear you were losing your cool a bit with all the issues at the midpoint on this one. They don't all turn out, unfortunately. Blast all those slots and sockets with electronics cleaner (doesn't have to be DeoxIT, the MG stuff works great, too) and then work the cards in and out of them to loosen the up and get them working again. You're gonna want that Sound Bastard on IRQ5 for DOS gaming. I usually deep clean everything in the sink so I can hit them with all-purpose cleaner and make a big mess without destroying my workbench area. Glad it came together in the end!

      @ljrretropcs  Рік тому

      Cheers! It was frustrating and even afterwards has given me some grief! I think I will have it all out for a deep clean at some point. Fortunately all of the games I play don’t mind the higher IRQ. Anything older I would play on the Dell

    Nice work. Shame about the problems but I guess back in the day things werent as plug and play as they are now and you are battling aging components on top of that! I have four dream retro builds. One for XP (Core i5 3340, GTX 750 Ti, Soundblaster X-Fi) . One for early Win9x (933Mhz Pentium III, Voodoo 3500, Aureal Vortex). One for late Win98 (Intel Core x6800, Soundblaster Audigy, Nvidia 4600). One for DOS (Pentium MMX 233Mhz, Soundblaster Pro 2, Voodoo 1, S3 Trio 64 - using Philscomputerlab 136 in one idea).

      It is frustrating but also amazing how finicky some of these old components could be. To think we used to sort these problems without the help of the internet!

      @@ljrretropcs Indeed, a quick brush with some isopropyl alcohol will do wonders, not just for the looks but with the running temperatures as well.
