    Thank you for demonstrating only piano (seriously, who spends this much money on something like this for non-piano sounds?) and also playing classical music and not new aged stuff.

    Thank you so much! Since this digital piano came out, there have been more and more presentations on UA-cam and they are almost the same: "new this, improved that, and blah blah...". What I needed was a "honest review" and though I would have like a more in-depth one, you nailed it! Now I know I can take advantage of the price drop of the CLP-585 to get one. I'm not a fan of the new consoles design. In my opinion, the previous one was just right. Again, thank you!

    Ahh, the Yamaha CFX has such a beautiful sound on these Clavinova's. It is literally the best sound I've ever heard in a digital piano! Does the CLP-685 have ANY difference in sound than the CLP-585? I've heard there is a small difference but is it true?

  • @ianpenfold8554
    @ianpenfold8554 6 років тому +1

    there is a differencs. the 585 sounds like it has more polyphony in the resonance, but it tailors off tinny. whereas the 685 sounds less polyphonic but keeps the full resonance in the tailoring off. ultimately these arevtwo different instruments that need to be played differently and it just depends what instrument matches your playing style,

    Hi John, I'm looking to buy a digital piano and the CLP-685 was what I first had in mind. But it seems many users don't seem to be content with it. I also have the option of getting the 585. I'm mostly looking for a nice action (but I have to admit I didn't like the Kawai models). Of course I tested them both and I also liked the 585. But I'm worried that it might be a stupid decision to get the older model (maybe older technology?) now that the newer one has hit the market. So would you say that it would still make sense to get the 585 over the 685?
    Thanks.

    • @TheScottishDad
      @TheScottishDad  7 років тому +1

      Leon Reisch Hi Leon. The short answer: get the CLP 585.
      The longer answer: I honestly don’t think the extra cash is worth the additional features. I compare it to the Apple iPhone. It’s like going from the iPhone 7 to the iPhone 8; it’s an upgrade with slightly better specs, but not worth the cash (IMO). Yes, the 685 has a “slightly” better Bösendorfer sample, yes it has better speakers at higher volumes and yes, it has heavier and longer keys but I really didn’t like the action. I prefer the lighter action of the 585. I would say to play them both and see for yourself, I would hold off for the new model in a few years to come and save yourself the cash and get the 585 for now. I had high hopes for it, but there just wasn’t enough wow factor in it for me to justify the extra cash.

    • @Leon-mn6cl
      @Leon-mn6cl 7 років тому

      Thank you very much for your answer John. The cash isn't really the big thing putting me off as there isn't such a big difference in price actually (just around 200 euros). But I have to say that when I played the 585 for the first time its action appealed a lot more to me and even though it looks good on paper the longer keys of the 685 weren't even that noticeable to me. I will definitely play them both in the shop another time before buying but again thank you very much for your time, I appreciate it a lot!

    • @TheScottishDad
      @TheScottishDad  7 років тому

      Leon Reisch no problem. I play at quite an advanced level and I prefer the action on the 585 having played a lot of instruments, both digital and acoustic. I guess everyone has their preference though so I’d definitely spend some time playing both.

    What’s the difference between an acoustic piano in terms of keys 🎹 sensation?

  • @ChristiRich
    @ChristiRich 7 років тому +2

    I picked up a Yamaha B series for about the same price new as the Clavinova. Digital pianos have come a long way with regard to touch, but the sound technology hasn't improved very much. I played a Yamaha Arius for hours a day and finally wore it out, and I must give Yamaha props for making their digital pianos feel so close to their upright acoustic range. They instantly feel like home. If only they could get the synth out of their digital piano samples in the 21st Century. I do think that their Transacoustic technology is promising, but I would have marched that Clavinova back to the store for return, too. Excellent review.

  • @benjaminsmith2287
    @benjaminsmith2287 7 років тому +2

    Thanks. Maybe show a direct start to the pieces, the Ballade, Moonlight, Impromptu between the CLP585 and CLP685. I recently went to a store and played a CLP635 and CLP535 back to back and I felt the same way listening to your comparison listening at the store. The CLP6 series sounds more refined and closer to the acoustic sound. It's still missing a lot of the overtones, but the 6-series captures more than the 5. There's more dimension to the sound. It's not dramatic a difference, but I find it pronounced. I don't know what the CLP685 action feels like, the CLP635's action is a lower action and it feels firmer than the CLP535. The new simulated ebony keys feel quite different. I like the changes in the interface on the 6-series, and it's the type of incremental upgrade I expect from Yamaha. I didn't try the binaural CFX effect in headphones, that's supposed to make a big difference as well. The 585 is a fine instrument, the 685 seems more refined from the impressions on the video. But, the CLP635 sounded way better playing the actual instrument, even though your video is high-def.
    I played Kawai's in a store on Friday. Overall, very close to Yamaha in sound quality, very comparable, but each has their own signature sound. I think the action is more engaging, quicker, better responding on Kawai. But, and this is personal preference, I give the tone edge to Yamaha. Especially secondary piano voices. But I haven't played a CS Yamaha, only as high as CN, not CS or CA that is comparable to the upper-end Clavs.

      Benjamin Smith thanks for the comment. Yes, I could hear a more detailed sound sample now that I listen carefully, you're right though, it isn't a huge difference. My other video of me playing Fantasie impromptu on my 585 sounds really good. It's hard to tell them apart sometimes.

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 7 років тому +1

      That's great playing, I just listened to it. Did you notice the binaural sampling difference through headphones? I could see sticking with the CLP585, maybe in about 3 to 4 years, the CLP785 will have a stronger difference. Yamaha should work on their action on the digitals (lower than AvantGrand series or NU1).

    • @TheScottishDad
      @TheScottishDad  7 років тому +1

      Benjamin Smith thank you. I could tell a difference with the binaural sampling through the headphones. It sounded like you didn't have any headphones on, was a nice feature. Apologies for not replying to this sooner. I did try the 785 and found the action a little lighter and the samples were of better quality; however, I recently discovered good quality software instruments (VST's) and use on my CLP 585 and I have to say, they totally transformed my digital piano. It feels like it has a new lease of life and the sample quality from the VST (Pianoteq) just blows the samples from the CLP out of the water. I now use the VST with my piano and a good set of monitor speakers and would never look back.

    you mention the banging or thumping sound on the keys, when I tried this model in the shop the first thing I do with any digital piano is try it with no volume , they all make a "thumping noise" however I wonder if achieving the more natural weighted feel if this has magnified this problem.
    I actually loved the feel and texture of the keys,it is very close to an acoustic piano (except the thumping noise) I own the clp 170 and can change the voices at a flick of the finger something you cant do anymore with the panel at one end!
    Would I change it for this model ? I'm not sure yet, and I would also have to persuade the wife!

    • @nelipottery
      @nelipottery 7 років тому

      this is exactly the problem i have!! Thumping noise when depressing the keys. I made the mistake of playing in the showroom with headphones on because of the cacophony of instruments being tried out by other customers.
      Thought the thud might just my beginner level of a couple of years playing. I have to either play with headphones or have the volume pretty loud to cover it up (and playing with loud volume is not an option considering my neighbors).
      Considering returning and going for the CSP-170 which may be more suited to a beginner/lighter touch. I have been playing a P-115 previously.

    • @TheScottishDad
      @TheScottishDad  5 років тому +1

      I touched on some of that in this video. In summary, the 685 has a better sample thanks to more processing power being allocated to it although, youd have to really listen for it. The 685 has more powerful speakers and blue tooth connectivity. The 685 also has an additional counter weight to make the keys heavier but in my opinion, the keys are now too heavy in the 685. I went back to #9and still have) my 585

      If you're decided on one of those two models, I would try both back-to-back if you can. The 685 sample quality was very good and I prefer the look of the 685 with it's taller cabinet.

    Hey JB thank you for this video! I have a small question for you,
    I have been playing the piano for 16 years, and during the past years I have only played on a Yamaha P-155, which doesn't have the best action... So I was looking for a piano which has the most similar touch/key action to a grand piano (I don't care that much of the sound of the piano) It seems that you are not very kind of the CLP685, so which piano would you chose knowing that it is almost impossible to buy a CLP585?
    Thank you very much!

    • @TheScottishDad
      @TheScottishDad  6 років тому

      VALVERDEd, hey.
      Thanks for the comment. I haven't played anything else other than Yamaha for a serious amount of time. It's a difficult one I found the 685 to be far too heavy and thus, taking away from the realism. You can still pick up used 585's I'm currently selling mine as looking at the Novus NV10. I have seen a few others for sale too. I would still chose the 585 over the 685.
      You could also look at the 6 series from Yamaha but the lower down models such as the 645. It will still be an upgrade from where you're at and the keyboard action wouldn't contain the new action, so should feel a bit lighter.
      I would encourage you to try out different models as the touch and action is subjective: what feels right to me, may feel wrong for you :-).
      Definitely try them out, Kawai are worth checking out too. My personal opinion is that I'd stay away from Roland; my local music shop have replaced their Yamaha range with Roland and I'm not a fan. The sound, touch and design are just horrible .... IMO.

    I have a slightly unrelated question for you. I currently own and play a chinese console piano. I have struggled so much with it, until very recently i thought i was bad at piano no matter what i did. But i recently tried some 535 and realized i actually dont sound bad, the yamaha piano was much more sensitive to my touch. My question is do you think it's worth it to give my current mechanical console piano away for a yamaha digital piano?

      Arastoo Mi Hi,
      That really depends on what you feel is important in a piano? The sound, the touch? I had the option to own an acoustic piano, however; I've preferred the digital for a variety of reasons.

    Hi John, thanks for reviewing both top of the line Clavinovas. I have been playing an early Clavinova for 20 years, switched to a Roland, and now I play since more than a year on a 585, fitted in a real wooden upright piano by a Dutch company called Oostendorp. It looks and sounds great. However, although the CFX sample is quite good (but the Bosendorfer is rather disappointing), I have discovered Pianoteq 5 with all the modern and historic grand piano's etc., and in addition I use the Vienna Symphonic Library Vienna Grand Bosendorfer Imperial, as well as the Ivory II Fazioli and America Steinway D. All these via a i7 laptop computer with external SSD drive, and to be honest, most of these pianos sound better than what is in the Clavinova, especially the Bosendorfer from VSL. Yes, they are quite expensive, but so is a real acoustic grand. The Pianoteq historical collection is very interesting to discover. So soundwise, I have no urge to upgrade to a 685, it would have to be for the action, but I understand from your review that the difference is not significant. Thanks again for your critical review. Ralph.

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 7 років тому

      It's still the "Clavinova CFX." The real CFX has a far less bright sound. I think to get it closer to a CFX you have to go into piano room (CLP 6-series) and fiddle, definitely turn down the brightness 2 or so levels. I don't know how Garritan's CFX is, some rave about it. Pianoteq 5 is not bad at all, the Grotrian is interesting.

    September 20, 2017 John Burns: I understand your point of view that it's not that significant to go out and buy a CLP-685 when you already have the CLP-585, a fine model. However, at this time, it's rare to even find a new CLP-585 for purchase, and the difference in price I found for the lowest price CLP-685 is barely US$200 more than the CLP-585 new. That's for purchasing the CLP-685 in the UK on the Internet and having it shipped to California, U.S.A. A tremendous savings compared to the U.S. prices. That includes shipping. With any custom/duty fees, the cost will be slightly higher, but still a fantastic savings.

      Can you tell me where the best places are in the UK to buy pianos and
      have them shipped to the US? I am in Florida, looking for a clavinova

    • @divinelightinalmightygodfo412
      @divinelightinalmightygodfo412 7 років тому

      David Burnett: I have found out more info since I posted here. First, a Yamaha Clavinova digital piano (or any model) purchased in the UK has 220-240 voltage. If it is shipped to the US it will entail getting a new cord and adapter plug (IF the voltage is switchable to US 110 voltage), or a step-up transformer will be required (around $55 in the US). Second, the warranty will be void in the US.
      The best price I found is from Gear4Music in the UK. Approximately 2956 British Pounds or US$3995 INCLUDING shipping via DHL which they use. However, I found out that if there's damage or loss, etc. DHL insurance only covers the WEIGHT of the digital piano package. It does not cover the value of the digital piano. So additional insurance would need to be purchased through Gear4Music before it's shipped. I don't know what that will be. When the UK item reaches US customs, there will be US VAT charges which may be around 6% - OR possibly higher - it's unclear. All in all, it still seemed like a great savings to me compared to US$5800 in the US for the Yamaha CLP-685.
      If you or anyone would like to get a great deal on the Yamaha or any other model digital piano and you live in the US (outside of the country is not applicable), I would look up Tim Praskins at AZ Reviews through a Google Search. He has reviewed digitals for 40 years and can get fantastic savings. He lists his phone number and email. That is my strongest recommendation. You won't be sorry. He has a policy of ONLY giving out the price and source when a buyer knows exactly what they want and are ready to buy. His deal will be better than the restrictions and risks of buying overseas in the UK, etc.
      Personally, I am re-considering which digital piano I will buy. The CLP-685 is said to have "too hard" of an action. Tim and others may feel the sound which uses established "sampling" is a more authentic acoustic piano sound. HOWEVER, the Roland series of HP603, HP605, LX7, LX17, although it uses SuperModeling sound rather than "sampling," is written as having a more realistic mechanical piano key action and a better, more realistic piano sound that comes alive in REAL TIME (as compared to the "sampling" sound which is fixed and kind of bland, some say). The LX17, what I'm considering, costs US$7000 retail but I personally can get a fantastic deal. I can't offer that deal to others but I'm sure Tim Praskins would be able to get something fantastic too. Also the entire series of Roland mentioned above have the same qualities. The only difference is the speakers and cabinet configurations. (The Roland LX17 has 8 speakers.)
      I am also seriously considering the Roland RD2000 digital stage piano (portable) which has the same qualities as the Roland pianos above. At a substantial lower price US$2500 retail. Tim Praskins could probably also get you a discount on that. That piano requires external monitors and speakers, but would still be MUCH less than the Yamaha CLP-685. AND it would be portable: 48 lbs vs. 185+lbs. It also has 1100+ sounds compared to 300+ in the Roland or Yamaha CLP series.
      So, with the discounts that Tim Praskins is offering, I would rather buy from him at a fantastic deal and forego
      the idea of purchasing from the UK and shipping to the US.
      Hope this is helpful.

      Next year a french compagny will launch the Phoenix Piano. It's a revolution in the digital piano world they say. Transportable too. Can't wait to try it.

      Cosi: October 8, 2017 I was not able to find any information online about the new digital Phoenix Piano (by a French company) for 2018 that you mentioned. Do you have any links or further information you can post. I'd love to read about it before I decide which digital piano I will buy. Thanks!

    For me the rattle noise is a really bad thing about Yamaha digital piano keys I got it on a Yamaha p45 and it’s really annoying

    I like your video (except the portrait format!! :D ), honest and non of the crap marketing that most other reviewers gave. Nice playing too. Lastly, don't accept Phi6er offer (I hope you're still alive since it was a year ago) as he plays dirty! >:)

      Nicholas Lim Thanks :-). The portrait was one of those "ah sh#t" moments when I started to edit it and realised.
      I haven't played in some time, work and life taking over. I need to make time to get back into it again.

    Great review! I've been a fan of Clavinova for years but I've tried the new GrandTouch action a few times and I think that Yamaha have made a mistake with it. It feels far to heavy, with more resistance in the keys than even a grand piano with a heavy action. It's feels absolutely nothing like the action of an acoustic grand as it's artificial, 'cardboardy' and uncomfortably hard at the bed of the key, as if there's not enough cushion. Also it would be annoying at low volumes as it's quite noisy as well. Such a shame as it's a great digital piano aside from that.

    CLP-585 SEEMS SOFT SOUND, CLEAR, BUT CLP-685 SOUNDS MORE POWERFULL..

    Which do you think would be better? The CLP-545 or the CLP-635 from Yamaha?
    Or if you can recommend a better piano under 1500$.

      @TheScottishDad  7 років тому

      Infamous Duck hey. I haven't played either, so I really don't know. I would lean towards the newer 635 though but do research on both before hand.

      30 W x 2 CLP 635
      (25W + 25W) x 2 CLP 545
      545 Wooden Keys
      635 Plastic keys
      545 - No VRM
      635 - VRM
      This is pretty much TL/DR of the differences.
      I was thinking of Kawai CN37 too. Any experience with that?

    • @TheScottishDad
      @TheScottishDad  7 років тому

      Infamous Duck wooden keys makes no difference IMO. the VRM is probably a benefit but you should try them both out and you'll know which one is for you after that.

    Kawai pianos are even heavier than the Yamaha's, I did not like the heaviness at all in them, I liked the bouncy feel that felt realistic for slow pieces but it felt so sluggish and resisting in my playing when doing faster stuff. I went for the HP-605 because there is no keybed better than the Rolands I think at the moment. I haven't tried the nice Celviano grand models from Casio which is said to have nice keys in collab with Bechstein. I was really tempted for that model but it was a hassle to find one and try it so Roland it was this time.

      And what I heard now the new Yamaha is even heavier than the kawai, oh boy I can only imagine how crazy heavy this is then. I don't know why they insist on making these digital heavier than grand pianos, the Roland comes closest to my taste. There is also a reason why Horowitz and others modified their Steinways to have a light weight, I doubt anyone want heavy key action.

  • @johnstaf

    The counterweights make the action lighter.

      Yes, only the white ones. From CLP645 and higher, the pianos have white wood keys. this is the best Clavinova in the CLP series. Or maybe the CLP695 that has the grand case.

      CSMedia Richard Bower (Yamaha consultant and technical specialist for Yamaha at Key Player) advised this info, also, take a read at this: it’s stated in many places. At the time of writing this was true, unless Kawai have a new model, maybe their Novus?

    I can't swallow the Yamaha's mid tones, they sound tiny, nasal and 'toyish' with a metallic spice, in almost every model. This signature is irritating and it's what's driving me away from purchasing another Clavinova.

    • @TheScottishDad
      @TheScottishDad  7 років тому

      Michel Oliveira I agree to an extent. I can't have a real acoustic piano though for space and practicality reasons. I think that Yamaha are probably the best at the moment in my opinion. The hybrids might be next on my list.

      John Burns What do you think about Roland's HP 6** series?

    • @TheScottishDad
      @TheScottishDad  7 років тому

      Michel Oliveira the last time i played a Roland was around 10 years ago; one of my first digital pianos.
      I wouldn't be in a position to give accurate reviews, however; I've heard that their keys are noisy and have a plastic feel to them, even on higher models. Their sound generation technology does seem impressive though using modelling. I would be curious to try one out.
      I think it's very subjective; everyone will have their own filters and wants from a digital piano. What sounds or feels good to someone might sound and feel terrible to someone else.
      What's your experience with them?

    • @micheloliveira6718
      @micheloliveira6718 7 років тому +1

      John Burns Just traveled to test a HP 508 yesterday. I didn't have any chills playing it, but the sound was acceptable. Too much dirt on the keys (lol), I can imagine how long that kid was in the music store begging for a buyer. The white keys have an artificial texture that tries to simulate ivory. Core of white keys are brown, but wood was fake, probably resins. One thing was much better than Yamahas in general: dynamics. They are unquestionably better, excellent pianissimos and fortissimos. Mid keys sounded a bit telephonic, if you understand what I mean. After playing around with other models, overall I could feel a weak point in Roland's speakers in general. I'm yet to test the new 6 series.

    • @TheScottishDad
      @TheScottishDad  7 років тому

      Michel Oliveira great stuff - I've been back playing the 6 series again and now I've had more time to reflect, there is a subtle difference in the sound quality. I can hear it also in this video. The bosendorfer sounds better and the CFX a little more realistic with better attack.
      I think that the hybrids will be good, really good although, the price point will reflect that. The Novus from Kawai will be interesting. A real action (which is my most important point) and then sound will be just as good hopefully.

    i tried both the Yamaha CLP-685 and Kawai CS 11 and both were disappointing in regards of the sound coming from the external speakers system. The Yamaha was a nuance better in my opinion. I play only some times using headphone so this was important for me. I guess i have to go with a acoustic piano & silent system.

    • @SpaghettiKillah
      @SpaghettiKillah 7 років тому

      Faster The Kawai CS 11 makes sound with speakers AND a real wood vibrating sound board at the back. You can easily tell because the sound is so much different, closer to real acoustic upright IMO.

      Cosi: Thank you for your prompt reply. I received your comment in my email inbox as a notification that you had posted. I see that BOTH of your comments were deleted here. Perhaps by the increasing censorship from UA-cam which has been especially prevalent in recent news. The global elite "cabal"/new world order is furiously trying to control everyone through totalitarianism. They will not succeed.
      Regarding the Phoenix piano, I was able to use a Chrome/Google browser and have Adelle Music website translated to English. However, intuitively I did not get a good feeling about their presentation. Additionally, I listed to the JS Bach Prelude played on the Phoenix piano, as you had commented, and agree with you that it sounds too digital.
      There are existing digital pianos right now that sound way better: Yamaha CLP685, Roland LX17, Roland RD2000, Casio and Kawai digital pianos, etc. At this point, I"m not impressed. Moreover, the Phoenix ONLY appears to have a piano sound. I did not see ANY controls or levers for additional orchestral, MIDI-synthesized sounds, rhythms, effects, etc. (The Roland RD2000 was able to accomplish a better acoustic piano sound and STILL have 1100+ extra sournds. The Roland LX17 and Yamaha CLP-685 both have over 300 extra sounds.)
      I also looked up the Alpha Piano from Germany. Apparently it was released in 2012? It is also strictly a piano sound and I don't get a good feeling about that one either. I also heard one video which sounded mediocre.

      www (dot) adelehmusic (dot) com But it's in french. On youtube you can search "Piano Phoenix Adele Music", interview in french from the designer and pianists. One video from a pianist playing some Bach (but sounds very digital for me). I had a few words with a guy on facebook who tried it last week, said that the sound was better than any digital he tried at this piano fair in Paris. He also said that the action was "perfect" for him. Also did you heard about Alpha Pianos , a german brand ? Looks top notch, but can't find much on youtube about the sound and price.

      You're right, it only have a piano sound. Because it's designed for that, to be a piano ,and nothing else. But I'm not impressed too. I just want to believe that it will be awesome when I will try it. Yes I forget the LX17 from Roland, I should try this one too. I was considering the Yamaha N1 for a time but I discovered that it have a common issue on repeated notes (some sound louder than others with the same dynamic, very weird), and people say that the sound is not so great. Well, I don't know what digital piano I will buy next...anyway it's late here, have a nice day ! (sorry for my bad english).
