Here's the thing: It took a LOT of work on Mr. Neeley's part to keep his voice in excellent health so that he can do this. Believe what you want, but don't discount this man's dedication to that.

I came here after watching the film On Demand. I saw it as a teen in ‘73. When I watch the film today I cried when I listened to this song I’m sure I did not when I was a kid. When a performance can invoke that type of emotion it’s just incredible.
and so every moment I'm like "ok, now he'll make a mistake... i mean, what's coming next is too hard to do live on stage... just too hard, no way he can make this one... no way...". and then, he makes it, and amazes me with every note, with every word he sings... what a great performer...
He definitely has a few mistakes. His register changes are a little too jarring, and his first G5 is sharp. But let me repeat. He was SHARP. He was TOO HIGH. What?

This wonderful man not only has played the role of Jesus in 1973 but he is the only man who makes you believe that he is Jesus he plays him with love! I was lucky to have seen him in Jesus Christ Superstar on my 50th birthday and he was fantastic!

Here's a fun fact. When my son was just a baby we didn't have cable and so I watched my VHS tape of Jesus Christ Superstar daily. He grew to love it as well and would request it by name. I've seen Neely 9 times in this role and he was utterly amazing each and every time! Nine times and 30+ years between performances, Neely defines the role for me and I compare anyone else's performance to his. I've seen other artists attempt to keep their range as they age but Neely is a true master in this role.
I SO would've married him in 1973 and I would NOT be disappointed 44 years later with the shape he's kept himself in, both physically and vocally. What a dude.

Brought up in a very strong catholic family. Now agnostic but Ted knocks me out every time with this song. So powerful and such a talent. The man brings me to tears. A great story just like many other fictional stories are when performed with such conviction. I often wonder his mind set after 40 years of performing as Jesus Christ.
There's something that takes over Ted when he performs this song that is not of this world, that's why he's believable as a man in his 30's being in his 70's and having performed this for 4 decades, beyond amazing, a master class of artistry and emotion.
I was lucky enough to see him perform in Jesus Christ Superstar in Augusta Maine on my 50th birthday and he was amazing in the role! This has always been my favorite musical and my sweet husband Gilson bought me 2 tickets and my daughter Angela who was in college came up to spend my birthday and go to the show with me! I will always treasure that time in my life..That was 9 years ago..We lost Gilson 2 years ago and I was a very lucky woman to have such a wonderful gift!
I read that it has been said that Ted Neeley had some problems with his voice on the night he did it in 2006 but he still managed to perform this incredible song with so much power that even his fellow cast and crew members couldn't keep their eyes dry. But he truly is an amazing singer and performer. Jesus Christ Superstar is my favorite musical and Ted will always be my favorite Earth Jesus!
He had the flu during his 2006 performance from what I read. How he can still hit those same high notes as he did over 40 years ago is just amazing. Few singers’ voices hold up that long. Most have to sing in a lower key after so many years.

wow, a "hip" rock and roll make believe movie about a historical figure shaped your decision to believe that that historical person was the savior of the world. hmmm. gotta be some irony in that. However, All I gotta say is that if it makes you a better person, then yay. If it makes you all judgy and look down on others who aren't like you, then... watch the movie again... he loved the outcasts too. I think too many people miss the whole point of Christianity - LOVE ONE ANOTHER.

Met Ted when I was about 14 and he and Corey Glover were on the US tour. Probably the kindest individual I have ever spoken with. Signed my program, encouraged me to pursue acting and gave me a hug. God Bless and protect this man!

Tom Sistermans it’s a bit difficult to do after singing for so long. pretty amazing he can still do it!! it takes a lot of technique and skill and he still puts in so much emotion. i think we should appreciate mr neeley instead of criticizing him

Here's a fun fact. When my son was just a baby we didn't have cable and so I watched my VHS tape of Jesus Christ Superstar daily. He grew to love it as well and would request it by name. By slightly different name because he couldn't say Jesus Christ Superstar yet he was just a babe. He Called it Jesus Crapperstar and it was precious how he loved it as much as I did. Thank you for those memories.

I've seen Neely 9 times in this role and he was utterly amazing each and every time! Nine times and 30+ years between performances, Neely defines the role for me and I compare anyone else's performance to his. I've seen other artists attempt to keep their range as they age but Neely is a true master in this role.

Brought up in a very strong catholic family. Now agnostic but Ted knocks me out every time with this song. So powerful and such a talent. The man brings me to tears. A great story just like many other fictional stories are when performed with such conviction. I often wonder his mind set after 40 years of performing as Jesus Christ.

There's something that takes over Ted when he performs this song that is not of this world, that's why he's believable as a man in his 30's being in his 70's and having performed this for 4 decades, beyond amazing, a master class of artistry and emotion.

I was lucky enough to see him perform in Jesus Christ Superstar in Augusta Maine on my 50th birthday and he was amazing in the role! This has always been my favorite musical and my sweet husband Gilson bought me 2 tickets and my daughter Angela who was in college came up to spend my birthday and go to the show with me! I will always treasure that time in my life..That was 9 years ago..We lost Gilson 2 years ago and I was a very lucky woman to have such a wonderful gift!

I read that it has been said that Ted Neeley had some problems with his voice on the night he did it in 2006 but he still managed to perform this incredible song with so much power that even his fellow cast and crew members couldn't keep their eyes dry. But he truly is an amazing singer and performer. Jesus Christ Superstar is my favorite musical and Ted will always be my favorite Earth Jesus!
He had the flu during his 2006 performance from what I read. How he can still hit those same high notes as he did over 40 years ago is just amazing. Few singers’ voices hold up that long. Most have to sing in a lower key after so many years.
