A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for over 40 years, Jesus Christ Superstar is a timeless work set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
It was the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage and first came to major theatres when it debuted on Broadway in October 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York.
Less than 12 months after the Broadway show opened, the rock spectacle went to London, exploding onto the West End at the Palace Theatre in August 1972 in a hugely successful production. By 1980, after 3,358 performances, Jesus Christ Superstar had become the longest running musical in West End history at the time and grossed $12.3 million.
In all, Jesus Christ Superstar has grossed over $205 million and has been professionally produced in 42 countries around the world!
Oh my....................... I'm speechless! The emotion he put into that! This is the performance that made Andrew Lloyd webber cry and it made me cry too!
For me, I think that this is Steve's best performance of Gethsemane I've seen.
did he cry? my god. that was so good.
04:37 - "Then...I was inspired. Now, I'm sad and tired." So committed to the message in the song and the character that he's moved to tears. Awesome performance.
I love this so much, Steve must have steel lungs.. have any of you tried to sing this..... I did and nearly needed a paramedic. : /
Unfortunately there isn't any rest of it! Gethsemane is all you will see of Steve Balsamo singing from JCS. When the show was filmed in 2000, they used his understudy Glen Carter instead! Such a bad, bad choice. I saw the full show live with Steve in it. It was perfection IMO. A classic performance and production, never been bettered before or since and it wasn't recorded. Shame on you RUG! What I wouldn't give to have a DVD of Steve Balsamo in the 1996/97 Lyceum Production.
most kindred eyes among the JCs i've ever seen... highly convincing with that look upon his eyes..
I think the Neeley and Balsamo debaters should realise that they are two different voices for two different genres. The old JCS had a classic rock style, for which Neeley was perfect. He had the edgy, frail, broken voice, perfect for that music style. Balsamo is also good, and whilst his voice is purer, his voice would not have fit with the old JCS. JCS has changed into the now favoured 'show' style, for which Balsamo is entirely appropriate for. It's like comparing apples to oranges.
I think Ted Neely would be very proud of this man. I haven't heard such spirit in this song since Ted.
I grew up with Ted's version, but this is simply stunning.
Woah, those tears and expression....Phenomenal performance!
Steve was great! And I'm a Ted Neeley superstar fan, so that means a lot coming from me. His acting was superb. There were a couple places I was looking for Neeley's high notes, but I have to say, I was drawn in and he was believable. I'm impressed!
I have to get my fix of this every few months or so, brilliant performance
You can't judge steve unless you saw him perform in 1996 he is was and always will be the best passion vulnerability and soooo hot, the best voice take a look at his latest stuff and maybe you will get the measure of the man
The absolute best version of this song I've ever heard. My dream is to stage JCS someday...and I would dream of a voice like this to star.
what a great artist!! BEST PERFORMANCE OF GETHSEMANE EVER SEEN !!!
The 1996 CD version is all you'll get of Steve and Zubin Varla as Judas. Two great voices.
I think this is the best version I've heard!
Fantastic! I've never seen Steve before and having seen, heard, and adored Ted Neeley's performance...this is easily as good. Until I saw Ted Neeley I'd never heard anyone sing such strangled yet perfect high notes. I wouldn't have imagined that anyone else could do it - and here it is. I'm amazed. Superstar! Acting superlative too - see his tears! That's genuinely emotional singing.
Insane...simply astonishing.
Although I am familiar with Jesus Christ Superstar, I had not known who Mr. Balsamo was until I was introduced to him through Eric Woolfson's musical "Poe". He was brilliant in that, and he is just as brilliant, if not more, in this performance of Gethsemane. Chills throughout, and he kept my attention fully. Great job, incredible performance!
Ted nails the 'why' part, whereas Steve just crushes the 'watch me die' part with a vengeance. God has a lot of questions to answer
One of the greatest performances of this epic song of self-lament. He ranks up there with Ian Gillan.
OH WOW!!!! this performance is historical
Нереально. Одно из лучших исполнений. Респект
Chills. So many chills
Awesome!!!! Words cannot define my love for this performance!
by far the best version i have heard, incredible!
That was so beautiful and emotional. What talent!
This is just amazing, beautiful.
Cryed through the hole thing so touching i love you steve
2:58
3:52
5:30
wow
Amazing. I nave to say I prefer a little more Ted Neeley's falsetto, it is more incisive and rocky, but I do LOVE Steve's chest voice, and that emotion... just WOW.
Hauntingly beautiful
Sorry for my english:
Perfect performance, both in terms of vocal and acting. Loneliness ... fear ... suffering ... Zero irritation that is felt, not like Jesus, in other embodiments. The best and truest realization of Christ's prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. Big round of applause!
I have goosebumps. Is that sweat, or is he actually crying? Either way, very moving! One of the best I've seen!
unbelievable! i was just about to say that! incredible! the feelings are there!!!!
Excellent , what a great voice !!!
Best performance ever!
Best performance EVER!!!! Neeley just sang it...He FELT it!!!!!Well done!!!!
Sorry...this guy is really good, but Ted's voice is freakin' amazing. Ted captures the 70's rock diva sound that's synonymous with JC superstar.
i tried singing along, i died the 3 minute mark on that CRAZY high pitched bit :') incredible performance by mr balsamo :D
Wow, this was an amazing performance! Just look how much feeling he puts into this and that voice! :D
Can't wait to do this for a concert in November :) It's at moments like this I'm proud to be Welsh and to actually know and worked with this man's brother :D
I saw him in 1997 and also Ben at the O2 in 2012-loved them both but gotta say that the Arena Tour was spectacular-especially as I was near the stage-fab sound-Ben was brilliant-I have all DVDs of JC SS and Tim and Ben were superb. The weakest Mary has to be Mel C. Could have toured the country seeing the show again and again-awesome.
Awesome performance vocally one of my favorites :)
담아갑니다!
I love Ted's voice, saw him do it live, but this... wow... this was 99.5% as good. In some ways it was better, because he wasn't afraid to make it his own, but Neely just seemed made for this part.
There isn't a rest of it. This is from a musical show where he sang only two songs. This and Immortal from Poe (well worth seeing too) The fantastic and fabulous and the Best ever JCS production that Steve Balsamo starred in was never recorded. BIG MISTAKE, HUGE!
thank You for emotions!!!!
Лучший исполнитель!Браво!
Wow! You are fantastic! Loved this!
best performance ever!
I saw Steve in JCS when I was 6, even tho I was young I can remember flashes of it.Tho the UK just had a Tour I would loove if it came back to the WE as a show
outstanding...
Man im not religious at all, but I love the style of music here. The original was brilliant. This dudes freaken good too :D ... ah music..
simply the best
The hairs on my neck kept standing on end for ages now I can't get it out of my head. Couldn't have put it better than you
Just saw this tonight in Cardiff on the arena tour, and Ben Forster's performance of the song was utterly breath-taking. Amazing.
Eso es intensidad, mis respetos...
Wow...! That's simply..., great...!
Honestly speaking..., I think that, If the most popular collective imaginary buddy in all the whole wide world had so just..., so just a very little of enjoyable voice..., and he could sing well..., then..., and just then..., he could performing this very beautiful song with a such magistrality..., as eximiously perfect..., as the shown by this very..., very really talented Italian-American boy... Great...!
I weep for you.
Amazing
Wow wow wow wat mooi
amazing simply
Holy moley. Amazing
Amazing....
lindo...con su voz majestuosa...!!
I beg to differ. Seeing as how so many people do praise Neeley, maybe there's something to it? Steve Balsamo has one of the most beautiful and well trained voices I've ever heard, but his version just doesn't move me the way Neeley's does. Neeley combines frailty, honesty, and power in a way no one else does. At least that's how I feel.
AMEN!!
This is very good. I still pick Ted Neeley as my favorite. This guy is amazing, however!
This is amazing! Gives me such goosebumps!! >w
his performance is incredible...but I personally prefer Ted Neeley's. Don't know why but I have a soft spot for that man's performance of this song and the whole movie. Maybe its just because its the original I dont know but I really cant think of anyone who can top his performance. Obviously its my personal opinion though :)
tasteless? pssht look at that emotion! its the best one ive gethsemane i've heard so far. absolutely amazing!!!!! I'd love to hear a steve jesus and tim minchin judas lol :D
é l'interpretazione più bella che abbia mai visto! Fenomeno!
listen up all.. balsamo is the best jesus you will ever see in your lifetime...
Dos más el argentino Gerónimo Rauch y el austriaco Steve Seale! dos grandes voces reconocidas internacionalmente, escuchálos!
Ah, finally an undistorted version of this performance. Can we hope for Poe track as well from this concert?
Wow, that voice! :D
Ther absolute best. I wish his music was available more here in the states or he would "C'mon over here". I just don't think he's interested in the US.
its not how it was based, but how it sounds, I really prefer rock style but this one was excellent, what Ted did was kind of a powerfull head voice or mix voice, balsamo´s falsetto its way better, he change tones while doin it, not only a dry scream, and come on, youre saying balsamo didnt had that emotion, how often have you seen the original, its the same face all the time
Now see this on UA-cam: " Balsamo Deighton - I Don't Know Why "
Actually both eyes had tears
sorry but I never heard this song till today and I heard several versions mentioned in these comments since, this version is so much more superior than any others.
Amen to that! Drew Sarich in particular is SO underrated. But I think he makes a better Judas than Jesus, tbh.
WOW
i totally agree with you
and god gave steve his voice just for this role :D , no one does it as well!!
LOL. That is 100% YOUR opinion. "He isn't all that great." Not sure if you watched the original Jesus Christ Superstar movie, but his performance throughout the movie, let alone this song, was SPECTACULAR. This is also my opinion, but I would think most people would agree with me that he is beyond great. Anyway, Ted Neeley deserves all the praise and more.
I really liked this interpretation very much... but man, why I cannot find it better that Ted Neely's in the movie? - I don't know.
I feel Ted's high notes are not "falsete", but a true powerful scream of pure natural voice.
Well, maybe it's also because a lot of people prefer classic rock to show tunes? Not everyone likes that style of singing. I appreciate the technicality of it and think Balsamo is fantastic, but I much prefer Neeley's classic rock voice.
Cant agree Ben's performance stronger. Is v good but no way in the same league as SB's. think you will find the proof is in the fact that while Mel C and tim Michin won best supp actors in a musical recently and ben wasn't even nominated says it all. SB won while in the show. You'll also find to so many performers musical and rock he is legend and aspire to sing like him. Vocal coaches give copies of him singing this to their students. There's also vocal scholarship given in his name.
only steve balsamo can sing this AND NO ONE ELSE!!!!!
It's tears:')
Great ! Amazing !
Yes I know. And it is a great shame. Although having the CD is a treat. I listen to it loads. But it would have been so great to have a DVD of the Lyceum show. That show with SB+Varla superior to any I've seen before or since. And I've seen a lot in my 60+ years. I'm afraid I dislike the new arena tour show. Don't like the production as a whole. Modernizing it to such an extent spoils it in my opinion. Lyceum had it just right. Modern and up-to-date but still with the feel of the right era
TIM MINCHIN FOR JUDAS YEAH!
I REMEMBER THIS MOVIE ......
I completely love this version! It's amazing. But once you've seen Ted Neeley doing it, there's no turning back. Steve Balsamo makes a brilliant Jesus, but Neeley IS Jesus.
