Mopar Voltage Limiter ~ Temp & Fuel gauges

  • Replace or fix your voltage limiter on the back of the dash cluster, if your Temperature and Fuel gauges quickly go all the way up. Turn off the ignition key if you can, pegging the gauges will harm them. The gauges work on 0 to 5 volts. The voltage limiter limits 12 volts to about 5 volts, in conjunction with a capacitor.

thanks, gonna check my 75 Dodge Sportsman tomorrow. It didn't check out with continuity but will double check with your method.

THIS is WAYYY COOL! THANK YOU! I have 5 1964 mopars that this will help fix!

Very cool. I wondered how they did it in the 60's. I suppose one could rig up a solid state 5v reg with heatsink attached to that can.

In -64 dart voltage limiter is build inside the fuel gauge. It has not this kind of separate voltage limiter.

My temp gauge would rarely swing wildly up and down so replaced it with a solid state and so far so good. I also was led to
believe if they fail they can fry your gauges...?

yeah, when they are failing, you will notice them and full gauges go all the way up, and are even pegged with the ignition key on, and they can fry, but, you have a couple of seconds in my experience!

@@Moletastic69 ....but now my fuel gauge is off. I got mine from RTE-engineering, they send along a 10 ohm resistor with it I'm going to have to use

Question: I'll be attempting at removing the gauge(s) but need to know, is this voltage limiter located just behind the speedo gauge on a circuit board? Or is it on the Fuel gauge?
    Thanks.
    Edit: it's a C body 64' dodge 880.
Just don't know if the voltage limiter is in the same place as you say it is as your car.

Is there a good article or video for that solid state upgrade?

The solid state part just plugs right in.

does it affect power going to the instrument panel fuse? I get movement on my gas gauge needle and slight movement on the temp gauge. But they are incorrect readings. When I replaced the fuse, it is still not getting power to it.

This is the exact problem I have with my 65 dodge, both needles are pegged at a 45 degree angle. Did you find a fix for this problem?

Anyone here know how to fix the gas gauge itself on a 65 Coronet? The little wires inside the gauge broke.
