Hello PB it's Mike from Belgium. Just saw your method tying the blood knot and was thrilled! After recovering from a cerebral infarction this was the most difficult knot to learn tying again and you saved my day. Thanks you for sharing this with us.
The easiest way by far that I have seen. I Trout fish and make my own tapered leaders with blood knots, and this new method will definitely save time…appreciate you sharing
Very good video and much simpler way of tying a blood knot without having 2 tag ends flying around. For tying a leader with a dropper one need only cut off the original overhand knot and one of the resulting tag ends to leave the dropper. I use a Dennison Blood knot tool to tie my blood knots and manipulating 2 tag ends can be tricky. Using your ‘overhand knot’ method with this tool makes blood knot tying extremely easy.
Follow up to let anyone watching this video know that this tip really works great because I tried it. I use really thin lines but it still was quick and was easy to tie with this method. Should go though the guides on my fly rod super easy. This was a tough knot before to tie but now super, super easy!
Jim, it’s even more frustrating when the bite is on for the Pompano and you get sharked off on a couple of rods. You enter panic mode to get your bait back in the water. Lol.
This is pretty slick. Being a fly fiherman I have use blood knots forever. The difference between us is both of your tag ends come out together whereas mine come out opposite each other. Not sure it makes much difference, although you are using much heavier line. Your thoughts?
A blood knot and a dropper loop not are blood Brothers. I have never had any problems with the tag ends going out the same way. It’s a good knot and a quick one. It also goes through the eylets on very nicely.
I can tell you with a great confidence that it works perfectly. The only difference is the tag ends come out on the same side, but they are under as much pressure as a knot with the tags are in opposite directions. You could learn to tie a blood knot and test it for yourself. I’ve been cutting the loop on dropper loop rigs for years and they just don’t fail. The biggest reason for a 50lb leader to fail in the ocean is Mr. shark’s teeth.
I think a swivel wouldn’t pass thru the eyelets of the surf rod smoothly. I have only used the blood knot my entire life. I have never had a blood knot fail me. Line failure is usually from sharks and bluefish cutting the line with their teeth. It’s important to check your shock leader daily for nicks or abrasion.
In a properly tied blood knot the tag ends are supposed to come out of the center in opposite directions. This makes them come out of the center in the same direction.
A little modification to this method will give you a “real blood knot” with the legs comming out opposite ends. Follow all the same steps all the way up to right before synching the knot. Were you started pulling it closed, but not all the way. Once it’s there, cut the overhand knot and feed one of the legs in opposite direction and synch it. I still do it the regular way most of the times, but if it’s cold or in the middle of a long day at the water, this method makes it less cumbersome.
I've heard of the blood knot mentioned lots of times, but never looked it up to see what it is. Basically a dropper loop with two different diameter lines & cut the loop out. I have to tie some leaders tomorrow, so I'll give it a try. Thank you. Does it work for braid to mono, or just mono to mono?
Ian, I did some research and I would not recommend using the blood knot for tying mono to braid. It looks like the best knot for that is something called the crazy Alberto. Here’s a link. ua-cam.com/video/aXjagwdjAhg/v-deo.html
I'm in Brevard and have been fishing in Melbourne Beach. It's loaded with catfish and finally landed and keeper with a few whiting in the mix. Any pomps by you yet? This cold front coming down hopefully will send them south
That's awesome. It's like a dropper loop knot but with 2 lines tied together. I've never tried a blood knot before. I usually use a uni to uni. But I'm gonna try this. Do you know if it works good with braid to mono?
If you are anal you can reverse one of the lines in the hole after you trim off the knot and it is still much easier than the usual way to tie. This would give exact duplication of blood knot.
Tide , The only reason The Tag ends are together is because I tied the knot first. They would be opposing if you tied it the old fashion way that takes a lot longer. The tag end positioning will not affect strength. This knot ihas been time tested on the beach, and pulls the biggest slobs up the sand with no threat of breakage. Your biggest threat of line break is not replacing your shock leader every time you go fishing. There are small nicks in the shock leader that are caused by run-ins with sharks and abrasion in the sand. Always run your fingers down your shock leader after replacing a pompano rig.
Patrick, you are correct. But the tags going in opposite directions does not affect the strength at all. I have tested this knot on the beach with many heavy fish. The dropper loop and the blood knot are blood brothers because the knots are so similar.
@@PompanoBrownie THANK YOU for clarifying that… I was trying to make a very small compact connection between mono and braid so as to past effortlessly through the rod guides while casting… Any suggestions?

Scott, for braided you should use the Albright or the Crazy Alberto

Don't the tag ends go in different directions through the hole in the middle to for a blood knot?
Tide , The only reason The Tag ends are together is because I tied the knot first. They would be opposing if you tied it the old fashion way that takes a lot longer. You could do that on your jig!
I normally don't use any lines lighter then 20to30 pound test mono
I have seen a couple of different ways to tye this knot
It’s a dropper loop with two lines and cut the loop off
That’s correct Moon!
Right. Not a true blood knot.
Dropper Loop
Correct, the only difference between a blood and a dropper loop is the tag ends are on the same side in a dropper loop. Same strength and much easier.
Agree
Well, technically not a blood knot. It’s a 2 line dropper loop then cut the loop off. Not sure if it’s as strong as a real blood knot. But seems ok.
The only difference is that the tag ends are facing the same direction. The blood knot and the dropper loop are Blood Brothers.. LOL
@@PompanoBrownie right, so it’s the blood 🩸 clot knot.
I like it! 👍
it is not the true blood knot, it must have opposite ends
The Dropper Loop and Blood knot are Blood Brothers. The tag ends not being together does not affect strength. Try it.. you’ll like it.
That's not a blood knot, it's a dropper loop. The tags must go through in OPPOSITE directions on a blood knot.
Patrick, you are correct. But the tags going in opposite directions does not affect the strength at all.
I have tested this knot on the beach with many heavy fish. The dropper loop and the blood knot are blood brothers because the knots are so similar.
Isn’t that a barrel knot ?
It’s actually a dropper loop knot. The only difference is tag ends are on same side of knot.
that might be easier to tie but that is not a true blood knot as tag ends supposed to go in opposite directions.
It’s a dropper loop knot that is essentially the same. Just as strong. Try it. The dropper loop and blood knot are blood brothers.
you make it easy using 50 pound test mono 😱make a video using BRAID, SPIDER-WIRE AND/OR 10-15# mono???????😤😤😤
All I use is Mono, the blood knot isn’t appropriate for braid. My 50lb is my shock leader, the 20lb is my main line.
