    The final meeting of Gojo and Geto in the street is beautiful.
    "Are you Satoru Gojo because you're the strongest? Or are you the strongest because you're Satoru Gojo?"
    No matter how strong Gojo was, he was still just a cog in JJK society. Gojo had no personal sense of conviction, no mission in life, no purpose.
    Gojo learned to carry on Geto's ideals, "The strong must protect the weak." To reform JJK society, but it cost Gojo his only best friend.

      And when Geto says Gojo that if he killed Geto, that would have meaning, but the thing is that Gojo doesn't! Geto knew he wouldn't, because Gojo knows one thing only; that he is the strongest. His enlightenment is not one of purpose, but that of his own EGO.

    It just occurred to me how much Geto smiled and laughed in the Zero movie versus the younger Geto who was more serious. It almost was like he was liberated by finally not having to follow values he couldn't accept. It's interesting how the author shows these characters are all massively affected by a person close to them, Gojo and Geto, Yuta and Rika, Maki and Mai, etc. One person sometimes is all another person needs to provide balance to their life and when that's taken away, the results can be shattering or uplifting, depending.

    I feel like that Jujutsu Society failed Geto. We've all been teens and there's a certain point, it varies between people, but there's a point where you decide to choose either to be a part of society or against it. Geto was always a morals valued individual, he cared about ideals. The poor way in which Jujutsu High was sending these literal children out to handle life, death, and all the horrors you can and can't imagine from humanity, you're setting up a majority of your students to either drink your twisted Kool aid, or give some permanent PTSD to the rest. Geto got lost in all that came with seeing his ideal shattered in front of him, his belief system rocked. Geto was making bad guy moves, but was one of the good guys just with a different viewpoint. His story is a sad one

    I really like the way Gege portrayed two different ways in which trauma can affect people. Some experience a big change and grow from it, managing to process the trauma emotionally; Post Traumatic Growth. Gojo did just that. After the incident he focused on getting stronger and had a change in worldview.
    Geto in other hand, developed PTSD. Unable to cope with the trauma, he kept on re-experiencing the event in his head over and over. The despair, isolation, loss of appetite, lack of hygiene, drastic negative change in worldview. All signs of extreme psychological distress.
    I think a major decisive detail that led to both of these reactions is not only their own personalities, but the nature of how they wound up after Toji's defeat. Gojo lost but was more or less back from the dead, awakening his whole power and becoming the strongest sorcerer alive. Geto in other hand witnessed Riko getting killed after promising her a brighter future, and couldn't defead Toji either. Gojo grew in power exponentially while Geto fell between the cracks and had no support system.
    It was a disaster waiting to happen. Had someone more adequate reached out to Geto and helped him heal properly. The dark path he ended up walking might not have been so decisive.

    • @rinseyong5202
      @rinseyong5202 Рік тому +252

      I agree that's how it affected Geto, but I personally don't read Gojo's change as a positive one. I don't think he really processed the trauma. Yes, he got stronger in terms of actual ability, but emotionally, the way he threw himself completely into perfecting his jujutsu was a self-isolating response. After the incident with Toji, Gojo & Geto could never say "We are the strongest" with the same unshakable confidence ever again. Both had different reasons for that, though. Gojo realized that he was only truly "the strongest" when he was alone. Geto could no longer claim the title at all. Geto is left behind with all that devotion and sense of responsibility that has nowhere to go -- he bottles it all up until it turns into resentment. But Gojo detaches himself from his humanity, because it's what failed him during that mission. And this is what leads to him making the second great mistake in his life -- not being there for his friend. It's only after he loses him that he realizes that "there's no point in being the strongest on your own", and that's what shapes the philosophy he holds in the present day.

      @@rinseyong5202 the concept of Posttraumatic Growth does not necessarily mean the trauma has been processed and healed from, actually. It rather means that a person gains a new insight, perspective or positive change following the traumatic event. The name can be deceiving.
      The positive change he went through wasn't just the mastery of his abilities, but his change of worldview and morals. He became a teacher and a quasi-father figure of many children. He protected the weak and aspired to change the system through educating the younger generation. That doesn't mean his emotional trauma has been healed, of course. But he found positive ways to deal with the consequences. That's what that specifically means.

    • @rinseyong5202
      @rinseyong5202 Рік тому +60

      @@deadsoon I get that, I just don't think the trauma inflicted by Toji is what caused that growth. Losing Geto, who he relied on as a moral compass, is what forced him to do that introspection. In the year between the SPV incident and Geto defecting, Gojo wasn't actually shown to have changed much aside from getting stronger in ability. Him saving Megumi from getting sold to the Zenin clan was directly preceded by his last conversation w/ Geto, and his subsequent realization that power had no intrinsic meaning if he couldn't protect the people close to him -- which led to the conclusion that he needed to raise the next generation to be strong enough to protect themselves, as well as providing them with moral guidance so they wouldn't go down the same path as Geto. While this was a chain of events that was started by Toji, that trauma isn't where Gojo learned that lesson from.

      @valeriyav2149 Рік тому +39

      @@deadsoon losing to toji made gojo stronger in terms of powers - true, but the change in perspective happened after he lost geto because those powers didn't help him to save his closest person. he had to change his mentality and adopt new values (a lot of them were geto's old values mixed with his determination to support a new generation in a way that would prevent what happened to geto from happening to anyone else). so maybe you're right about posttraumatic growth of new perspective, insight, etc. but the trauma that caused this was losing geto, not losing to toji

      i get that Geto was too idealistic for it to be possible but maybe if he talked to Gojo when he was struggling, Gojo would have tried to find another way to fix the system (he'd have probably offered to kill the "rulers" of Jujutsu Society and build something new together). idk if it would have worked though. Geto was looking for a final solution to the problem with curse energy but he was also mentally unstable to go for the most extreme option. if he got some mental support in time, there was a chance he'd have leaned into another option (Yuki's option or Gojo's changing system from the inside option).
      it's always fun to theorize about "what ifs". honestly, it was more possible for Gojo to choose a dark path with Geto than vice versa. Geto only had to say "Yes, let's kill these sick cultists" :D but the story would have been much shorter.

    I feel like the fact Gojo managed to see the future and move forward while Geto couldn't, also depended heavily on the power up he had. Due to the awakening Gojo received, it gave him power and hope which gives him the resolve and control he needed to move forward. As now he has that feeling that next time he will prevent this because he is stronger now. But in Geto's case he didn't get such a thing, after suffering such a big loss, he only kept on losing, his resolve, and his partnership with Gojo, adding to that is the drawbacks of his curse technique which without Gojo to anchor him and Geto having to do missions himself slowly turned him insane.
    I really like Geto's character, even though we know everything he did is wrong we can't help but kinda understand him in his situation. He chose the wrong path but not without reason. I always thought of Geto's story as a benevolent god that chooses to consume the evils of his world to protect the people, but eventually after consuming so much evil and witnessing the dark side of humanity. It broke him and made him question his own purpose. Eventually, all of the evils that he consumed, consumed him instead turning him into a dark god.

The type of crazy Gojo unlocked whilst fighting Toji - where the individual becomes "God" in a way - probably could've saved Geto. Maybe that's why Gojo is constantly trying to recreate the same crazy into Yuji, Megumi and the rest. So they aren't twisted by the weird sense of justice, duty and morals Geto was - they can pursue their own meaning instead.

    I know you'll probably never see this but I just wanted to add a new perspective to how Gojo and Geto coped differently with the trauma of Amanai's death and the whole arc really. That is to say, how similar their coping really was despite the seemingly different outcomes. What I mean by this is that I feel like a lot of people forget that Gojo quite literally was one inch from death from his fight with Toji and i believe personally that his conviction to become stronger with his six-eyes and limitless came from a place of fear that this would happen again-- he was afraid of ever getting hurt again so he quite literally set up a barrier to himself at all times and began isolating himself as well. Geto mentions how Gojo kept going on missions by himself now that he was the strongest, so it wasn't that Geto was the only one being isolated. The two of them had always leaned on each other for support and without that Gojo clearly started becoming neurotic about getting stronger, obsessed even. He was never there for Geto because he was too busy struggling by himself as well (and obviously same goes for the other way around). They were each too busy looking in on themselves to look at each other during their darkest times. Gojo *tried* to extend an olive branch by asking if Geto was getting enough to eat but beyond that we don't see him for the rest of the chapter until he finds out what Geto did and regrets how he could have been so blind despite having the six eyes. Also imo Geto never hated the "weak", even with his twisted mentality of destroying humanity he never changed his ideal, he just changed his targets to protect sorcerers because he realized they themselves were an "endangered species" so to speak and were weak to the absolute mass that was the non-sorcerers. Anyways those are just a couple of my thoughts that differed from yours and I wanted to add to the discussion.

Him even looking for a wife to begin with is the most unnecessary step he could take if all he was trying to do was validate existence. Him sending Karen away, him not giving into those desires to kill his dad and wife. i wouldn't call gojo questioning geto's genocide plan hypocritical - he did it because he regarded geto so highly when it comes to morals, much higher than himself or anyone he knew. geto was a moral compass in his eyes, someone with the strongest ideals he knew. he could imagine anyone doing it, even himself probably, but not geto. i think after everything happened, gojo understood that it was exactly because geto had such high ideals, it broke him so much when they got shattered. that's why 10 years later, during their last convo, gojo said "a man of your principles wouldn't have killed sorcerers if he could help it". that's probably why he avoided killing him for 10 years - he understood what happened to geto and why, and maybe blamed himself for not understanding sooner. but at that time, when he'd just heard what geto did, gojo was so shocked that he couldn't believe it

    One thing that hits me about the rain panel in the manga is that it conveys so much about Geto and Gojo’s fates. Just to name a couple, the massive rift in their power after the events with Toji really shows. Geto in the rain signifies the reality of his life path and his CT. He will always have to eat curses to get stronger and will always be closer to them (physically). Whereas Gojo is the exact opposite and his abilities literally make him untouchable. Geto dirty is a sign of his effort. Gojo dirty is a sign of weakness.
    Second one, Geto in the rain is him accepting “reality” of the world and choosing to abandon his righteous beliefs. Gojo literally has infinite but using an umbrella lmao It makes me think of how Gojo tries to keep a hold of his humanity as he gets stronger which holds him back in way. It’s like Gojo is afraid that he’s only pretending to be human. So he does things like use an umbrella despite the extremely minimal effort of just blocking the rain with infinity.

It’s pretty interesting when you compare Rengoku and Geto in terms of their similar yet contrasting beliefs regarding the strong and weak. Their both trained fighters who put their lives on the line and endure a lot of horror to protect regular humans, yet where they differ is how one was able to hold onto his morals till his noble death, while the other descended into madness. Makes me wonder what a conversation between these two would be like.

I know almost every JJK fan places the Shibuya arc as the series’ opus (for good reason obviously) but hidden inventory just hits different and fleshes out the perspectives of two major characters in a way that feels powerfully unsettling.
    To your point about Geto; I think he could have been saved and was even in the process of feeling hopeful that there was meaning in the philosophy he lived by until Riko died the way she did. However, to your point, the world of JJK was/is already systematically broken, so by that reason, Geto was always destined to be mentally crushed by the reality of their world; the extreme dedication to the way he follows his ideals without any regard to his sense of self was not sustainable; a fact the arc communicates in a poignant fashion

    Geto’s CT: a never ending disgusting process of absorbing curses. To him, the existence of curses is the reason of his frequent disgust. It’s no wonder he hates non-sorcerers, because their feelings originate the curses he consumes.
    Gojo’s CT: absolute freedom, heightened perception and a feeling of godhood. Like he says “I don’t hate anyone, this world feels so good”. He is often careless also because he has the ultimate shield and no one can really touch him.

    It’s worth noting that a large part of Gojos change in feelings towards the weak happen when he becomes so powerful he’s essentially a god. Becoming a god changes your perspective on the very nature and being of life as well as those around you. I believe that’s the true meaning behind Getos line asking whether he is gojo because he’s the strongest or if he’s the strongest because he’s gojo. It points out that being the strongest and essentially all powerful is now an essentially and irrevocable part of his personality and outlook on the world and he’s no longer able to see things from getos perspective because of that

So much was running through his head while he knew he could've stopped a death. The scariest thing about Geto's turn for me is the fact he had such utter conviction in this.

    Dope breakdown, i think regarding the JJK world... we the audience can use our personal morals to decide who's wrong and who's right, but within the JJK world... there's only "might makes right", Gojo's way(generally) is what's allowed because he's the strongest, when Geto said "that's arrogant, because YOU could do it" i realized he was right about Gojo.
    Whilst some people cry over Geto killing non-sorcerers... i just enjoy the show, Gojo and Geto are two sides of the same egotistical, selfish coin. Yuuji's story is a great representation of Gojo's selfishness, especially when Sukuna decimated shibuya, i realized what the conservatives where trying to prevent.

      They’re two sides of the same coin but I wouldn’t say they were entirely selfish. Egotistical yes but they both had the power to back it. Both of them killed and sacrificed people to uphold their own morals and values and their actions weren’t merely motivated by greed, it was more of selfless acts. But we can def see when both choose to be selfish when they’re willing to ignore evil to get what they want. I think it's kinda downtalked what Gojo's ascension as the sole pinnacle of Jujutsu did to Geto. He felt inferior to Gojo, but thought rightfully so cuz that's what the dynamic between a stronger and weaker being realistically looks like. Yet he couldn't comprehend how inferior/weaker beings such as humans could stand on the same ground he stood, relying on sorcerers and still looking down on him and mocking him. He felt disrespected and humiliated. The only principle he abides by is: "Everyone should know their place, according to their ability and value to society". And he just so happens to view humans as most of us view insects.

    I love your take! And completely agree with it.
    This storyline really struck a chord with me. When I say I was devastated, heartbroken, frustrated - I mean I was depressed for like a week… Now that’s a good story! It makes you feel very strongly and makes you think about your own viewpoints and ideals.
    I also feel very strongly that Geto was completely traumatized by Riko’s murder. I’m talking PTSD level. What he needed most after this event was therapy. But sadly as you stated, he became isolated. Maybe Geto did always look down on non sorcerers. But I think he was genuinely still searching within himself for the good in him. I think what he said to Haibara reveals that; “You say (you’re a great judge of character) while sitting next to me?” It shows self deprecation, like he was sorry or upset that he felt the way he was feeling.
    That’s why it’s so frustrating when he finally snaps. Especially because you can’t help someone unless they want to be helped. So I agree that by then he couldn’t be saved anymore. That’s why it’s so frustrating and devastating. He was so close yet so far from getting back to a healthy state of mind. And then he rejected the chance, and the chance was gone.
    I felt so sad about this character, but understood that after this pivoting point he became deplorable, willing to kill any non sorcerer despite their individual characters, values or choices in life. Even going so far as to completely devalue all non sorcerers to a subhuman level; “monkeys”. It’s sad but upsetting at the same time.
    But you’re so right. This tragedy did lead Gojo to never wanting to fall into it. And to grow as a person. This storyline was so next level!

Geto wanted to make a society where there are no curses which ultimately means that he wanted a peaceful world, let's say he achieved that but would it really remain peaceful? We know that there are jujutsu clans who don't like eachother and fight among themselves so even if there are no non sorcerers, the jujutsu sorcerers will fight among themselves and die, his comrades would die at the hands of eachother, so is this what Geto wanted? Is this really the peace that Geto dreamt of?

      i think gojo made his decision to commit to the other direction after losing geto, not after toji n riko. after fighting toji, he gained new powers which made him feel invincible. he was like a blank sheet at the moment when he suggested killing cultists - it could go either way but he listened to geto stopping him. he then went on mission after mission alone because of this new strength but it didn't change anything in his mind view. only after losing geto and understanding that even his powers didn't help him save his closest person, he changed direction and gained a new perspective - to prevent it from happening again, to support a new generation so they wouldn't go through the same
