Regarding how I pronounce Geto, I admit my pronunciation isn't really correct, however as far as I know in english the way we say "geh" is actually impossible to say it Japanese.

I also speak Japanese relatively well and I have no idea what you're on about dude xD
Why are you adding sounds where they don't belong? げ is "ge" and と is "to". I have Japanese friends as well and not a single one pronounces it like you do.
      Awesome vid btw!
      Edit:
Just for kicks I asked GPT-4 if げと could ever be pronounced "Geitou" and it answered:
"The Japanese kana "げと" is typically romanized as "geto," following standard pronunciation rules where "げ" is "ge" and "と" is "to." The pronunciation "Geitou" is unconventional and not aligned with standard Japanese pronunciation or romanization practices. Japanese pronunciation is generally straightforward, with each kana representing a specific sound or combination of sounds, and there are established systems for romanization such as Hepburn, Kunrei-shiki, and Nihon-shiki. None of these standard systems would render "げと" as "Geitou." "

Geto is by far my favorite jjk character. His development throughout Hidden Inventory/Premature Death is tragic, but at the same time, very understandable.
He was doomed to break at some point. The whole argument about egoism in jjk's world isn't really about "selfishness = strength", but about the need for your ideals and motivation to come from within, not from the outside. Doing something because "it's the right thing to do" and doing it because "you know deep within that it is the right thing to do" are two completely different things. Geto's ideals at the beginning of Hidden Inventory are the former. He exorcises curses because protecting the weak is the duty of the strong, but that's something that comes from outside of himself, it's what would be expected of someone in his position. He doesn't really have a deep conviction about it.
And that's why once confronted by the ugliness of the people he was protecting, his ideals slowly begin to crack. Since he didn't have any deeply rooted ideals to keep himself straight and his only friend, for whom he once was a moral compass, had reached a level where he was not needed and a level he could never attain, he had no one by his side to share the grief, hatred and depression with.
Then, when he was at his lowest, both Haibara's death and Mimiko and Nanako's treatment by the non-sorcerers of the village were the last two straws for him to break away from his previous ideals. Two innocent children, whose only "sin" was being born with a talent that regular people could not understand being thrown in a cage by them. The villagers would not listen to a word of Geto and wanted him to get rid of the two, all the while he knew they (read non-sorcerers) were the cause of their own suffering (curses), rather than the kids. Seeing the worst of the worst of mankind and being forced to deal with it constantly led him to a point where he was at least a bit justified in saying "fuck it". I don't condone anything he did afterwards, but I can understand it.

Man I just *wish* from the dephs of my heart that poeple would just come to understand his character more than naively jumping into conclusions without any bias or research, completely casting aside the painful and miserable process he had to go through to reach the inevitable breaking point..

That's basically what happened to him, yeah. It's interesting how there are characters who go through the same thing, seeing the worst of humanity like Higuruma. He constantly deals with the worst of humanity, although he experiences the unfairness of the Japanese justice system. When he finally breaks, he loses himself for a bit until he meets Yuji. Afterwards, he's reminded of his morals and convictions.

Well, Nanami and Geto lived very different lives. Geto's ability is what really helped throw him into insanity. The curses he eats are revolting, the worst taste in the world, so what degraded his mind was constantly submitting himself to this to help those who hated his kind. Geto saw the worst of humanity while Nanami saw a glimpse of the best of it. I don't think a cashier giving Nanami bread cancels out Geto being contracted to kill two kids because they were "a little weird".

His story is so sad, the way everything changed so quick is still difficult to accept. He’s such an interesting character, and although his morals obviously turned evil, you can see his perspective. Seeing his backstory, you’d never expect it from someone as kind and reasonable as Geto to end up the way he did.
I wish someone could’ve saved him, maybe have a redemption near the end at least, but he still didn’t regret his choice.
It’s sad he really didn’t have much screen time at all, he technically was never even in the show. Using his body for Kenjaku is really just Gege being evil and trying to make Gojo suffer more. It’s just emotional damage, using the face of his best friend for the new villain, when in reality he’s been long dead. 😕

There is indeed a theory as to what gojo said to geto and it’s derived from the opening 2 “ao no sumika” there is a line that says:

Gojo’s eng VA said that it was 3 words in english, so yeah it's most likely to be "i love you" wether it be platonic or romantic

I think the greater point of early geto is solidified more by Mahito Corrupting Junpei. This kind of proves that curse users can kind of come from purely mundane parents. Like a Harry Potter mudblood phenomenon. This makes the existence of curse users more of a roll of the dice and shows that despite what gojo said; every sorcerer is the chosen one.
He lost touch with reality to find an easy path out of trauma. He abandoned responsibility for convenience.

It's actually very similar in ideals & execution to the Castlevania Series on Neflix with Dracula.
Geto's perception of the world was PERMANENTLY broken. While Gojo & other characters can rationalize the cruelty & unfairness of the situation... he could NOT. There was no more innocence or delusional thinking left in him.
Geto was not stronger than Gojo, but he was more intelligent. Even worse, he was intelligent enough to understand that REGARDLESS of his own personal strength & and potential... that in the end, nothing would change. The status quo would remain the same. Why bother getting stronger?
So, not being able to pretend (or self-actualize/rationalize) that he was a "good guy", he took on the role as a "villian" while waiting for someone to put him out of his misery.
Even while playing "villian", the civilian casualties were relatively low, aside from his 1st 100 people incident. I believe he himself realized he couldn't perform genocide either after that.
So as Alucard said to Dracula, "This isnt a war, it's the world's longest suicide note."
Geto was begging for someone to end his existence. Someone to see & understand. He thought Gojo of ALL people, his BEST FRIEND, would understand.
But Gojo didn't. He couldn't even sympathize. He took the Genocide Plan at face value, not looking any deeper into it.
So in Geto's final moments, he was kind, but in a way, LOOKING DOWN on Gojo, for not understanding him.
My headcannon is that in Geto's final moments, Gojo finally agreed with Geto & admitted their actions were futile and gave him some peace.
That's why we'll never hear THAT part of the conversation, because it would be akin to breaking the 4th wall.
God's chosen righteous angel can't EVER be caught breaking bread with the Devil, & admitting this is all a game we play.

Hey man, thanks for the analysis, it really helped me understand the change in Geto. By the way, I thought you might find this interesting. I am convinced that the opening song "Ao no sumika" reflects Gojo’s inner thoughts, expressing his regrets and sadness, and when the lyrics say 「また会えるよね」って声にならない声, which I personally translate to "with a voice too faint to be heard 'We will meet again, right?' I said ", I believe he is hinting at what could have been said in his last muted words.

Amazing video man! I have some more things to add, but you did an amazing job of analyzing his character without making a two hour video out of it
First and foremost, I think the most important thing you missed to mention is Geto's inferiority complex and envy towards Gojo. You made a bunch of points that were playing at it, but you never outright stated it so I'll go out of my way to explain as to why I think this is such an important aspect of his character.
Gojo is stronger than Geto, he was from birth. Yet the two are regarded as the strongest together, implying Geto was at least at his level, even if he had to put in more work. We don't see this bothering Geto because it doesn't really matter at the beginning, it starts being relevant when Geto realizes there's something he wants (not sure of what exactly it is at the time) and he doesn't have the power to change it. Gojo does. Gojo could, if he wanted. And even though they're theoretically equals at the moment, if Gojo just tried harder, he'd easily rise above him. And then Gojo awakens and this eerie sort of jealousy manifests as some parasite plaguing his mind.
After Riko's death, the gap between them widens as he cannot make his progress in his psychological state and Gojo starts doing solo stuff. Gojo doesn't need him. Neither does Jujutsu Tech. Hell, even Shoko is drifting away. He slowly and painstakingly loses his sense of purpose in addition to questioning the reality of his life. Nothing keeps him grounded anymore, there is strange animosity festering where affection and pride once resided. There's no reason or meaning anymore. And he knows if he were Gojo, he'd never have to feel that way.
5:51 Another thing I wanted to point out is that in this scene, where Geto opens the door, he is not aware Gojo is alive. He's preparing himself, because as far as he knows, behind that door the corpse of his best friend, literally his other half, is waiting. I don't even know how to explain it, but if you ever had a bond as deep as these two have, just imagining having to walk up to your best friend's violated corpse and having to keep cool because now all your shared responsibility is now entirely shifted to you is. Vomit-inducing. Like that's genuinely insane.
I think that's something you missed to mention in genereal, ik it was technically there in a broader sense but I just wanted to shed some light on the importance this had. Gojo's "death" was something that he had to up and swallow simultaneously to Riko's, and that's just sick. Not only does he see an innocent girl get killed for no reason at all, he also loses his best friend, and he realizes there's nothing he could've done about it. No matter in what relation he stands to a sorcerer, they all meet the same fate. In addition to almost dying himself, I think the massive shock in that particular scene is what made his PTSD so bad in the first place. In his memories, he lost EVERYTHING that day, to a person he is told to mindlessly protect. That fcks up your rendition of the world pretty badly I'd say.
Also, at 8:04, I sincerely believe the former is right. We don't see a lot of him, but Haibara's character in jjk is probably the closest we get to one motivated by sheer good will. In some of Akutami's notes for the character it was stated that Haibara has a little sister who, like himself, has potential to become a sorcerer. The thing is, he outright forbids her from attending any Jujutsu institution. At all. There's no valid reason for him to do that with his personality, other than wanting to protect her from the life of a sorcerer, meaning he's at least in some way aware of the harsh life sorcerers are forced to live. Even if he didn't see horrors of the size Geto did, he knows being a sorcerer isn't something he'd wish for others. Yet he is one himself. To protect the innocent, it seems. THAT is selfless. And a bit stupid and naive, yes, but you can clearly see how much he cares for others, he is literally what people call a sunshine boy. What defines Haibara is that he is a GOOD person. And then he dies. And we see how people close to him start to spiral as they realize the death of joy personified could've been prevented if thing's had just been slightly different. We see this as both Nanami and Geto grow resentful after witnessing the fate of their friend, with the simple difference of the where this resentment is directed to. Geto blames the system, and Nanami the distribution of power.
While the two play into each other's hands most of the time, Geto refusing to see Gojo as an issue in the system is rather considerate. It's bittersweet, really, because we see he still understands Gojo like no other despite having similar feelings of envy toward his power. He still cares for him, their bond never ceased, but they will be on the same side after this, and that's something that can't be changed.
I honestly can't blame Geto for turning out the way he did, he was continually loosing all footing to stay sane. With all he had to witness and experience, there's no way you could reasonably expect him to keep going like always. I know for sure he's a lot tougher than I am, I would've cracked way earlier if someone put me through this shit I'm not even gonna lie 💀 But I also believe that is a testament to the fact that things could've turned out differently if somebody just noticed in time and gave him the help he couldn't get for himself to get back up on his feet. A shame that didn't happen, but we got a fire antagonist out of it so I won't complain 🔥

    • @Anisha-hi1fq
      @Anisha-hi1fq 3 місяці тому +1

That was such a good analysis!! I think you really hit the mark on Geto feeling a little inferior to Gojo. I feel like you could totally see that during the "break up" scene with Gojo when he says stuff like "You could do it, couldn't you Satoru?" when he was talking about his morals/plans. Plus the infamous line, "Are you the strongest because you're Satoru Gojo? Or does being the strongest make you Satoru Gojo?" Lastly, "If I were to become you, this foolish ideal would become a lot more grounded and real, don't you think?" I think you can see that he now views Gojo as stronger than him and realized that there's nothing he can do to fix their gap. He breaks off totally from Gojo and the whole JJK realm to become something by himself and follow only his own ideals and logic after realizing the ugliness of humanity. Truly a heart breaking character but he was so well written. Plus he shows the dark sides of being a sorcerer and falling apart because of the whole Jujutsu society
