I saw the Cars in 1979, when they were just on the cusp of their enormous fame. I still remember the obvious joy Benjamin Orr had in playing; he was definitely the lead. It was nothing like this event; but of course it was an American audience, and they loved the band!
For sure... Great song... Ben..as usuall is spot on. With both the bass and vocal. Great performance.. You are right the intro and outro are air tight. Well done.
At the :33 second mark of the video.... Something flies by Ben Orrs head. He finishes the line..."Electric angel rock and roller...I hear what you're playing." The he MOUTHS the words..."I'm gonna get you." Pretty fucking cool....Bens voice is killer in this clip. My favorite Cars song. Thanks for the upload.
+BillMcGirr - Yeah, the thrown drink flies by, but it's just a blur on the video and Ben does a hard blink (like we all do when something almost hits us in the head). And, man, Ben looks pissed from 00:44 to 00:56. But then he got his groove back after that. Total professional! I wonder what happened after the concert and if he ever "got" the guy! I'll bet he could kick some serious British ass!
Definitely looks that kill for a moment or two. Full credit to the professionalism of Orr delivering a masterful performance regardless of the idiocy of an on looker.
BillMcGirr Probably just a bad throw from a female fan. He smiled intently afterwards. But he may have thought, " I'm up here & you're down there so I need to get over this." Or not...miss him no matter what.
Benjamin then glanced at Ric as if to say "see that man?" What a cool guy, kept singing, didn't miss a beat. Again, love the guitar wars Ben and Elliot have at the start and end of each performance of this tune!
yay, what a jerk! Ben has that pissed off look on his face but never wavers in his vocals. knowing he must have wanted to go pop that a** in the face! Ben probably could have belted the guy and just got right back up on stage and started singing again like nothing happened! totally cool the man was!
I love this performance, I´ve recently discovered this band and Ben, I´m happy, they were great! really!! They were fantastic! and talented people! he so charismathic, i adore him!
Ric felt a lot of sexual tension when he wrote the lyrics. Great emotion. Super art. And of course the exceptional Rockabilly lead guitar by Easton. Orr amazing with his vocals. Keyboards on point. And David Robinson carrying the beat and tempo. Wow. Such talent!
Ahhh, the 70s when bands were really talented at playing instruments, writing music, writing lyrics. Sigh. Love The Cars. Bowie and The Beatles mashup.
Hey man, I gotta agree with you...he inspired me to pick up the sticks for at least a decade. My question is, what HAPPENED to Greg Hawkes' SOLO? It's like he wasn't plugged in or something?!?
@@maitai1133 The sound guy stunk, it's like he forgot Greg was there. There's also French show from this same time period where the sound guy forgot to turn up Benjamin's mic so he sounds all muffled singing this particular song. Amazing how an inattentive sound person can hurt a show.
Lots of details about this performance on my Benjamin Orr blog; here's a link to the article I wrote. sweetpurplejune.wordpress.com/2016/06/28/thank-god-its-free-rock-goes-to-college/
Thanks! yes i was reading it.... I try to understand a bit more of english, and and i really try to understand what he says in the interviews (linked down) at the minute 1, after read your article...i believe i supose the reason of the way he talks about england in this interview...am i wrong?? i wanted to know what he was meaning. ua-cam.com/video/pHGk_BL15fM/v-deo.html
The Cars do make some sense in the cold war era. They aren't exactly punk but are definitely New Wave like Blondie and the Talking Heads. They're about as good as the Sex Pistols but not as angry. As the Byrds said, there's a time for this. Iconic.
They're way way better at everything than the sex pistols. The pistols couldn't sing, could barely play their instruments, no solos, loose, sloppy, basically the polar opposite of the cars.
I know this is getting off topic a bit, but this album (to which I still listen to this day) was recorded and released during the same time period that one of my favorite horror films of all time, Phantasm, was being made. Notice the similarity between Ben's outfit and the one worn by Reggie Banister in said movie.
If it was a war Easton won with the best guitar solo I've ever heard. I mean can you name a better guitar solo? Ive heard Ben's voice and bass isolated and hes a great bassist and even better singer. He messed up at the end though which i found to be cool because i think of the cars as absolute perfection.
the first time i saw that, i thought he was sweet-talking a girl in the audience. then i read that someone threw a beer cup at the stage, and orr was pissed at him. i don't know which is true, because it's so hard to tell from the expression on his face while he's singing.
+Jeff Carden - Yeah, it's "I'm gonna get you" at 00:44 and then Ben continues to stare the guy down for several more seconds like he's going to beat his ass!! If it had been a girl, he would have been doing his precious Ben smile!
The GREAT Greg Hawkes is absolutely BURIED! Where is his incredible solo in this mix? He is barely audible, then the mixer slides him up just a bit to semi-audible.
Minute 2:10 : le solo inaudible du pianiste. Minute 2:30 : le bref regard déçu du chanteur et bassiste en direction du pianiste. J'adore jouer ce morceau ! Pas évident du tout à chanter !
It's either "I'm going to get you" or "I'm looking at you" after an object was allegedly thrown at him around the 33 second mark. Either that or he scoped a hot chick in the front row.
Something blurry definitely flys by Ben (it's quick but you can see it with the naked eye without slowing the video down) in the video but it might not have been anywhere near him in actuality. From reading other posts it's suggested that it was a glass or cup of beer. Not an uncommon thing to happen back in those days.
Ben, my love...that was before I was born and absolutelly I adore him. The Cars forever!
It's really rare when a vocalists voice is as good live as in the studio. Orr definitely had a great live voice
A tremendous stage presence, too! He loved performing, you could tell.
Rock & Roll is dead...until the end..the Cars will keep rocking this house🤘
As a guy I'm not afraid to say Benny O was god damned sexy in '78
Yup! He's cuter than my girlfriend even!
Probably their best song right here....Ben was something...and is missed bigtime.
These guys sound fantastic live. Easton is very underrated, a great all around guitarist.

RIP Benny . You were the voice .
It's amazing how many of their songs are still played daily on radios around the world.
Yes, several times a day!
RIP Ric Ocasek... Electric Angel Rock'n'Roller, I hear what you're playing... Bye Bye Love...
This is a day to remember Benjamin. Ben made this song. There wouldn't have been any Cars without Ben's voice. Find peace sweet Ben.
love how Ben fades to the back during the solo- to give him the spotlight
Yup, he always did that. Class act!!
YES he always gave Elliot and Ric the spotlight!! I love how Ben looks out at “someone” and says “I’m going to get you.” I wish it had been me.😉😉😉
Always! Such a pro.
No one can take the place of Ben on my dreams.
Orr is on fire here. The whole band is for that matter.
they sound great live...super group..nice harmony-great lead singer..

Jealous Brits had nothing that could match Sir BEN!
i would love to have seen Ben beat that guys
A** would have been so hot!
Benjamin then glanced at Ric as if to say "see that man?" What a cool guy, kept singing, didn't miss a beat.
Again, love the guitar wars Ben and Elliot have at the start and end of each performance of this tune!
He does the same in Just What I Needed. Love it.
Yes!
I wonder if they kicked the guy who threw the bottle out of the room? If that had hit him, his beautiful face would be scarred
Ben is so handsome! 😍
Yes he was!
I so agree!he smiled with his eyes,if that makes sense!excellent EXCELLENT band!everyone of them is so talented!
He's saying "I'm going to get you" @ 0:44 to the person in the audience who threw something at the band. You are greatly missed Ben.

Bingo! There you go.
The Cars were a REAL team! No egos. They wanted all to do well.
Be my guest. ;-)
I never saw the Cars live but I really like hearing and seeing them in these videos. Thanks!
The Cars rock!!:):):) .....one of the best new wave bands to come out in the 70s/80s
.Good bass lines, wicked riffs and sweet harmonies.......
I definitely agree!
Agreed 100%
bossco09 still one of the best lps released in the 1970's
Who else is watching this over and over because of Elliott Easton’s guitar solo?

Love you forever Benny 11 Letters 😘
Love the cars brings back memories and they didnt have a bad song .
Definitely their own sound great rock band
Best Band Ever !
These guys were cool, I think that just about sums it up.
Love the cars what a great album

Best rock band of late 70s and early 80s?
They're up there for sure.
Their new wave peers the talking heads were also incredible live. Watch "stop making sense"
The Cars do make some sense in the cold war era. They aren't exactly punk but are definitely New Wave like Blondie and the Talking Heads. They're about as good as the Sex Pistols but not as angry. As the Byrds said, there's a time for this. Iconic.

natetheguitarkid Very good solo no question BUT listen to the Knack's my Sharona guitar solo at the end of that song & judge for yourself!
My Sharona live with good guitar solo? Link, please.
Hard to beat Elliot's solos, but Ben was on fire! Thinking about kicking some British ass.
When Ben says I'm gonna get you to that guy who threw the bottle - Ben may have been angelic, but I bet not many messed with him!
Ben was the only one VOICE of The Cars
Nice.
Greg has his big solo but you can't hear the keyboards. He kinda makes a face like "I'm done, finish the song".
0:44 "I'm lookin at you"
matt8863 **sigh** i was wondering what he said. Such a beautiful talent. RIP my sweet Ben.

"it's an orangy sky"
.45 seconds..."I'm lookin at you"
Wow.. where did you find this one!? Thanks so much for the upload.
Anyone throwing harmful things should be banned from all concerts in that city!
The GREAT Greg Hawkes is absolutely BURIED! Where is his incredible solo in this mix? He is barely audible, then the mixer slides him up just a bit to semi-audible.
Easton seems to be influenced some by Alex Lifeson. A young alex lifeson. The way he plays
You're welcome!
Minute 2:10 : le solo inaudible du pianiste. Minute 2:30 : le bref regard déçu du chanteur et bassiste en direction du pianiste. J'adore jouer ce morceau ! Pas évident du tout à chanter !
what does he say out of the microphone?? at 0:45? it looks as.... More i can do? or something like that...someone knows?
It's either "I'm going to get you" or "I'm looking at you" after an object was allegedly thrown at him around the 33 second mark. Either that or he scoped a hot chick in the front row.
Thanks! yes someone said me that. Ohhh what bad my lip read! who could do something like that!! I wish i stayed there in that show.
Mmm I think is the second choice, I saw the video time after time, and I can´t see anything any object, I think is the second... and for his face! ;)

Ahhh yes, something it seems like red flash... of course! what stupid who did that! a few years ago a commom thing would be a lencery.
voces diferentes se habran puesto de acuerdo cuando cantaban??
good pick up - was he pissed or joking ?

ha, "it's an orange-y sky - always with some other guy" was mysterious enuff. Not to mention the bass player doing the vocals...all mixed up indeed.
Bass player Benjamin Orr sang quite a few of their hits, including Let's Go, Just What I Needed, Drive, Moving In Stereo, Candy-O, All Mixed Up...
David's got good ideas and chops … but his timing was never the best: fortunately, the band & songs were so damn good, it didn't matter.
