These guys came bursting on the scene with 10 great songs right off the bat no one else sounded like them and boy they sound terrific live.. love this band
Yes! I was in high school, Journey was getting popular at about the same time. All of my friends were really into Journey, not me, I became a huge cars fan as soon as I first heard them. I always will be.
@deppilisa I agree, I hated Journey after they brought on Perry. This has to be one of the best debut albums of all time. Too bad Rick and Elliot developed bad blood somewhere along the line.

I'm a serious metalhead but I love The Cars. Always have. They really kicked ass in their own way. In fact, I know quite a few other metalheads who love them too. They had that ability to reach across the lines. Not many bands do.

It was his contributions that gave their songs a hook that stuck in you. While everyone else was listening to ACDC, Van Halen(whose music I also liked) I was listening to The Cars on my 8 Track player. Yes they were still putting out 8 tracks back then.

Yes, The Cars sound best very loud. I always felt cooler than everyone who still liked classic rock and were still feathering their hair because I was a fan of The Cars and my hair style and clothing style totally changed my junior and senior year in high school because of MTV. I loved the New Wave rock/pop
You know what? This song is really, really fun to play on guitar! Especially Ric Ocasek's opening rhythm guitar part. It's a sort of strumming on a power chord, where you hit the chord only on the off-beats (one-AND-two-AND-three-AND-four-AND). On the ON-beats, you don't bear down on the frets, so you get harmonics instead of the lower notes (mostly B or A). Ric also uses this technique in "You're All I've Got Tonight", later in the song, after the main riff has been established. Brilliant!
The Cars really push it to the limit with this. It's definitive late 70s new wave post punk. This and a bunch of their other songs were and are just what I wanted.

Wow, almost 40-years since their debut LP by the same name. Their music is timeless as is their live acts. They are the greatest in classic rock-n-roll as Beethoven and Bach is to the classics. Imagine, a whole new genre at that time which I did no know what to make of their sound. Its so unique and vibrant, so different that it just blew-out the end of the 70s in glorious fashion.
