    What is this chemical? H2O2 is a powerful oxidizer, stronger than chlorine or bleach, or potassium permanganate. Hydrogen peroxide is naturally formed in humans, animals, and plant cells as a short-lived product in biochemical processes and is toxic to cells. The toxicity is due to the oxidation of proteins, membrane lipids, and DNA by the peroxide ions. Hydrogen peroxide can produce very active free radicals as hydroxyl radicals that can damage the cell's mitochondria and are known to have a cancerogenic effect in animal studies. Hydrogen peroxide can cause oxidative stress and lead to cell apoptosis and necrosis. Our immune cell phagocytes use hydrogen peroxide to kill the pathogen. Living cells need hydrogen peroxide in the metabolism and fortunately, cells have enzymes developing in nearly all living cells as important antioxidizing agents, enzymes that very quickly turn h202 to water and oxygen. Yes, In plant cells at concentrations in the low nanomolar range, H2O2 acts as a signaling molecule, playing the role of phytohormones. There is much research done and still uncertain what concentration is safe to use on plants. I came across a few studies and found that the average safe concentration of exogenous hydrogen peroxide that can be used on plants ranges from 0.5 mM to 5mM.

    Tea tree oil, peppermint oil, sal’s biodegradable soap, tiny bit of peroxide, a bit more of isopropyl alcohol, and warm water. Works like a charm every time for every plant, indoors, outdoors, and will give all your plants a healthy shine ✨.

    It’s used at very low concentration for treatment of fungus and black spots on roses.

    Amazing
    However , still the fact that 3 percent is widely used and advised might be due to some reasons like - the solution sold as 3 percent might be less potent actually ( and thus saves the plant ) and also , may be the weaker roots succumb to the 3 percent soln , but the healthy ones regrow the damaged tissue

    What do you recommend instead? Would Daconil work for root rot? I have some orchids with black necrotic areas and noticed one today with white fuzzy mold growing on a root near the top of the pot. All phalanopsis.

    First I’ve heard that it is toxic to plants. I rarely use it and when I do, I use it undiluted (3%). I prefer using garlic/onion/aloe sprays or wiping with cinnamon. I recently used it on a Paph when I repotted it due to black rot and it has slowly started to look much better. Mind you, I’m no orchid specialist. Have just been playing around with Phals, Paph and Cyms for the past year trying different media and water culture as just an interest. You say it’s bad, most YTers say you should use it (and they show their collection in the vids and they usually have some great looking specimens on show). It gets very confusing for the novice. Who to believe?

    THANK YOU'! it gets very frustrating watching these youtubers spreading this misinformation. I dont want to say anything because many get angry in the comments and try to start arguing etc. At the same time, I want to explain to people to just do their own research into these methods before using on their plants.

      I've used a couple different systemic fungicides with success. Monterey Garden Phos is a good one. And most recently Southern Ag Thiomyl Ornamental Systemic Fungicide, which contains the most effective fungicide to treat black root rot according to some of the research I've done. Here it is on Amazon www.amazon.com/Southern-Ag-Ornamental-Systemic-Fungicide/dp/B0052OFDOW/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=southern+ag+systemic+fungicide&qid=1625017413&sr=8-3

      You want to be careful and not use too much the best way to do it is to just put hydrogen peroxide in a spray and spray the routing system very generously get some tweezers and pull out on the base where the roots grow all of the black in all of the Dead roots and then after that you want to give it a nice soak for about 30 minutes and then you'll clearly be able to see how green and beautiful the routes are it works instantly just don't good luck

    • @Classyflowers
      @Classyflowers  3 роки тому +6

      Most of pathogenic funguses are reducents and decomposters, so they are not supposed to grow on healthy orchids. Fungicide usually make the situation worse, because further destroy natural microbial balance. Just make orchids environment healthy: keep substrate moderately dry, provide more natural lighting, improve ventilation and fungus will regress to the safe level.
