Hydrogen Peroxide in Orchid Care: STOP!!! You're Doing More Harm Than Good

- Hydrogen Peroxide has been used to clean orchids for a long time. It is known that hydrogen peroxide foams, bringing dirt and microbes to the surface, that is why it is used at home for minor cuts and wounds. Yet, have you ever thought that hydrogen peroxide could be harming your orchid?
Does Hydrogen Peroxide harm the orchid? Although Hydrogen Peroxide does have antimicrobial properties, it is not recommended for orchid care. The oxidizing properties of Hydrogen Peroxide on your orchid roots will burn and destroy the healthy velamen that protects the roots, hindering their absorption characteristics. Instead of only hindering bacteria, Hydrogen Peroxide also hinders healthy orchid growth.
To understand how hydrogen peroxide reacts with your orchid, you need to comprehend its chemical structure and reactions. I'm not a chemist and so this explanation will be simple and straightforward, getting to the point of where it matters: your orchids.
Hydrogen peroxide is H2O2. The unstable bond that holds the two hydrogen molecules and the two oxygen molecules is extremely weak and reacts by oxidation with almost everything it encounters. This reaction can produce two free elements of oxygen bonded to hydrogen (OH).
Since both of these elements are gases, the result is idealized in orchid care-a way to promote air circulations in places where air was previously denied, like roots.
A hopeful yet wrong assumption that hydrogen peroxide will somehow ventilate a dying orchid has become the new fad of orchid care. As a way to provide more gas exchange to places that have been waterlogged, hydrogen peroxide is applied to black, soggy, mushy, and dead roots.
Most people who advocate in using hydrogen peroxide will use it on roots that suffer from root rot, or will use it after cleaning out the old medium before a repot. It would be a good idea, if (and only if) that was the only reaction that hydrogen peroxide goes through.
Hydrogen peroxide can also result in another chemical reaction, forming one free oxygen and water (H20). The end result is water...more water. In this sense, to use hydrogen peroxide on a soaking root that has too much water already, would be to provide it with more water. Giving your drowning orchid a drink does not help it. The one free Oxygen element has little effect on the bacteria-infected roots.

I use H2O2 3% for my orchids mostly for larger pests such as snails without any problems. from what I've learned, it actually kills bacteria and viruses because the OH- is very unstable and attacks and breaks bonds that it comes in contact with. So when it touches the surface of bacteria, it breaks the surface and the bacteria leak and die. and you said that roots absorb H2O2 and bring it to the stem. I have never seen that happen in my orchids. The H2O2 reacts instantly when it touches any surface, it cannot be absorbed in large quantities because it will have turned into water and even if this happened it would only react within the root. it is very unlikely to reach the stem. you also said that it burns the velamen. It is indeed a possibility, but personally I have never had any strong damage. It could be worse if I used a higher concentration. What I am saying is that you made a few points making H2O2 seam worse than it is. you brought up it's other uses that make it seem more dangerous than it is. from my experience and what i learned it is completely safe to use at low concentrations (1-3%).
Hi Reefufu, Thank you for commenting. You have interesting points, and I did mention that in some cases the bond that forms is a good one. I believe that is the case your are defending here. Yet I also point out that the opposite is also true, and many people don't show that side. I don't use Hydrogen Peroxide and don't recommend it, but I know lots of people who do. Isn't that the beauty of orchid care? I just disagree with the part that it's not harmful, because it can be. That's not a risk that I take when there are other products on the market that will get the job done better.

@Reefufu while I understand why you feel the need to defend your actions many of the things you've stated aren't facts. 1. Not all bacteria/fungi are going to die due to H2O2, in fact MOST of the time the only things it will kill without issues is the plants good microbiome (like it's mycorrhizal fungi). The fact is that many of the more virulent bacteria etc. have things called enzymes that specially allow it to SURVIVE RO's (that is what is happening when the H2O2 bubbles btw the enzymes are breaking it down). In fact this is a test we do on bacteria to know if it has catalase which is a VIRULENCE FACTOR.
So, when you go in and spray your plant with H2O2 there's a very good chance your plant will have little to no good guys left to protect itself with only the more deadly bacteria/fungi you don't want. The plants immune system relies HEAVILY on it's micobiome to protect it, killing it off with H2O2 just because you want to "prevent infection" from repotting will only make an infection more likely. This is like people that are constantly on antibiotics never understanding why they are always sick...The maintaining of the plants natural defenses his a huge reason why orchid gurus spend lots of money on building up their plants microbiome not destroying it for every little bruised root with the overuse of chemicals (which also causes resistant strains).
2. Furthermore, no amount of H2O2 will EVER make your plant abiotic (free from bacteria/fungus/viruses/mycoviruses) nor do you want it to be...ALL living things depend HEAVILY on bacteria/fungus to survive and more importantly thrive (they are key in the plants nutrition). Without very specific fungi orchid seeds would NOT germinate and would no longer exist in nature 3. H2O2 absolutely damages the velamen and while you may not be able to see the damage it does happen. So, while it is up to you if you want to use H2O2, (they are your plants after all) saying "it is completely safe to use" is not true. Good luck and I hope this helps you to maybe think twice before using so often. 👍

This is the first time I have ever owned Phalaenopsis in my life. I have always been a Cattleya guy all my life.
Bought a really beautiful Phal not too long ago with 2 flower spikes, 10 buds each. The plant looked healthy until the buds started falling off.
I won't say which channel said to cut rotted roots off and spray them with peroxide, but that's what I did. Didnt expect to save the flowers, only focused on saving the plant. After doing first aid, I repotted the plant, with a little root hormone and the buds stopped falling off. Now it is growing new buds on the flower spikes. Full recovery! This was like 2 weeks ago.
Now I am researching growing with vitamins and hydroponics pots. So far almost every plant I bought had root rot in the middle of the plant...the middle of the pot. Which tells me that even in clear plastic pots where you can see better how well the plant has dried out, you cant see the middle. Folks think it is dry when it is not. Hope the hydroponics pots with full air access will remedy this problem, and help the roots dry out evenly. 🙂🤞

Thanks for the comment. Hydroponics is a good set up for seeing the roots, but I have more trouble with that than with other methods. I guess everyone has there own method, and that's the beauty of orchid care.
Another way to see humidity is to insert a barbecue skewer in the middle of the pot and after a few minutes, pull it out. If it it dry, then water. If the humidity has marked the skewer, then leave it alone.

@@Orchideria At 70 this year, I have found that you're never to old to learn new things. Yes, we use to use a Chop Stick to poke for moister in the early days, but have also broken a few roots in the center of the pot. So I don't like sticking a stick through the roots very much.
Just bought some plants a week ago and 2 were planted in hydroponics pots with no media. They looked really healthy. No chance of root rot that way, but the watering & feeding must be a pain.
Got one of those dirt meter to check moister and PH. With all the holes in the pot, you can stick the meter in the lower part of the pot, where most of the moister will be anyway, and less chance of breaking roots... I think. We'll see.
I've heard of moisture meters but haven't ever used one. Please tell me your opinions about them. Now I'm curious. :)
@@Orchideria Got mine at Lowes for about $10.00. Tried it out on several plants, dry and just watered, it seems to work pretty good. Some how it works without batteries. But talked to a grower who specializes in Species Orchids, and he said the cheap ones don't work as well as the $90.00 ones. But still, my first test seemed to work well on plants I just watered and those the were dry and ready to water. One in the clear pot was dry at the top, but had condensation on the bottom and it read right on the line between wet & dry. I think it works fine.

Outside of the one molecular oxygen slip, I found your video extremely informative and making a whole lot of sense and applaud you for going against practically every other orchid care video out there. I hope you don't get mad at me for saying this, but Hydrogen Peroxide should never ever be used on anything that has a thin skin. It is one of the first, and most reactive of the hydroxide radicals that was ever invented. If you use it on just a small part of a cut on your skin, it turns the skin white. Thats its nature. Indeed it will kill molds and fungus when used right, and after its use, either rinse or wash it away with sterile water, or distilled water. Sometimes on human skin, it can prevent healing if the skin is soft or tender. Just use on old roots, not new ones, and rinse after use like in repotting , but never on healthy growing orchids except to flush away fungus or mold. Something from my old high school chemistry days.. Great Vid. Keep them coming.
Hi Mark, When I was reading about Hydrogen Peroxide, one study said that it had been used to clean out wounds, but now it's not recommended because it will hinder the skin cells from creating a scar tissue and closing properly. That's why if HP is used continuously, the wound doesn't heal. So, I appreciate your comment on this video. :)

What can you use on the roots for root rot?
For those who aren’t squeamish, watching videos on how hydrogen peroxide reacts to blood is really interesting. I saw one of a tick being injected with it and while it was gross, it was fascinating.
Hydrogen peroxide 3% is used for mild wound debridement in hospitals and can eat fresh tissue away from a healing wound. It can be very damaging. Thank you for the velamen explanation. I was wondering. 🤷🏼♀️
Hi Amanda, would like to disagree a bit with the science here. From a chemical point of view, hydrogen is almost never released in H2O2's reactions with routine organic matter. H2O2 is relatively unstable, and wants to convert into water. The extra O released is a free radical (Reactive Oxygen Species -ROS) and is highly highly reactive. Oxygen in air exists as O2. So some of the free radical O finds another O to form O2 gas, which we see as bubbles. While other O free radicals combine with organic material, and pathogen cell wall and DNA/RNA components, changing their permeability and making them leaky, due to which they die. Some healthy root cells may also probably be damaged, but I guess the multicellular plant will repair them more easily than single celled microbes, which will perish. Plus most plants and some resistant microbes contain an enzyme called Catalase that protects from Oxygen free radicals in limited amounts. Thats why a very high concentration of H2O2 is not recommended, but a lower concentration would probably be safe if the orchid is not too stressed due to temperature or light. Plants possess efficient antioxidant systems such as the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) enzymes to scavenge ROS during low temperature stress. Adding H2O2 is a form of stress, but removal of infections, which are also a form of stress, often much more severe is generally a relief to the plant. Goes without saying that H2O2 should not be used frequently, as a booster, but in case of infections, I would personally probably use it.

There is mainly one mechanism, the 2nd one, which you say is ineffective. The 1st mechanism does not exist. I have two references on my website of the authors I used to write the article, but the H202 being breaking down into OH and OH, I got from the chapter of "Methods for Treating Wastewaters" from Industry by Woodard & Curran, Inc., in Industrial Waste Treatment Handbook (Second Edition), 2006. The paragraph I got that info from was this one,

Hydrogen peroxide has the chemical formula H2O2 and is an oxidizing agent that is similar to oxygen in effect but is significantly stronger. The oxidizing activity of hydrogen peroxide results from the presence of the extra oxygen atom compared with the structure of water. Infection" If you google this, you will find a PDF from the journal MDPI, which describes that peroxide is used as a natural defence by plants in limited amounts. As far as the chemistry described in your article, I would advise you not to go into too technical points as chemically Hydrogen peroxide can act as oxidising and reducing agent in acidic and alkaline environments, depending upon the chemical it is reacting with. I would much rather say that H2O2 can generate OH• and O• free radicals, which damage pathogens, and which in high enough concentration to overcome plant Catalase defences, can damage the plant too. When say not to use peroxide on the roots, does this mean STRAIGHT peroxide 3% or do you mean even if its mixed with water? Ive seen to mix 1 part peroxide and 3 parts water in a sprayer and lightly mis the roots at repotting to kill the bacteria. If you say still not to use it, what do you recommend to kill baceria when reptting

This has been very helpful. I just bought physan 20. The physan 20 bottle says to "spray anytime disease other than rot is evident". I'm not sure when to use it. I got my first orchid in May 2023

Finding this video after it was recommended to me to soak my orchids in hydrogen peroxide when repotting. It resulted in major root damage/death and I’m now rehabbing 3 orchids

I use hydrogen peroxide (3%) to kill off mealy bugs on my other plants ... it works! So far. they have not travelled to my orchids.
For insects and pests it works well. On the top of leaves also. Just on the roots that it becomes a hazard.

Hi Ellen, I personally haven't used it. I've read comments (tons of them) that suggest listerine and they swear by it, so I'll take their word for it. I just haven't tried it yet and doubt I will.

Sorry but your information is not correct. Hydrogen peroxide doesn't only work as a cleaner like you say, it is effective in killing many (but not all) types of bacteria and viruses. It kills by creating oxidative stress on living tissues.
I guess you have heard that antioxidants are good for your body, right? Because they help you fight oxidative stress. Some germs can protect themselves against hydrogen peroxide well but many can't.

Ok I just bought 6% peroxide yesterday at my chemist for the purpose of treating my orchids and came here for advice. Now I have to bottles of unstable rocket fuel. 😮
It's not unstable rocket fuel. Just mix it with water to dilute it to 1-3%. It's not a bio weapon.
Is potassium permanganate a better option?With the advent of Covid 19 sanitizer came to replace H2O2 as a cleansing agent for scissors etc. Thank u and happy gardening.
Hi Jose, Yes! Absolutely. Potassium permamganate is a great way to promote cleansing. I have never used it on my orchids personally, but I see it being mentioned a lot in a lot of sources.

I never use.H2O2 for my plants because its to cemichal for me when i use it for hairdying my client it use for OPENING HAIR CUTICLE and I dont want my orchid root cuticle to be opened. I better use natural bacteryside or fungiside.

I was under the impression granted I got it from a UA-camr and UA-camrs are just everyday people with whatever knowledge and experience they happen to have. Anyway this other UA-camr was talking about how hydrogen peroxide kills but not wall the thing is submerged in hydrogen peroxide let's say your scissors but when you bring them out the hydrogen peroxide evaporate off rather quickly and in doing so dehydrates any living thing that might be on them. But as I am making this comments I can't help but wonder if they too are not confused. Going back to my fish experience. It is often used to kill algae in the aquarium by taking it into a syringe or an eyedropper and spraying it directly on the algae underwater. So it does have the ability to kill but if it's doing it underwater I don't think it's doing it by dehydration either. But I agree if you're going to use hydrogen peroxide on a living thing to kill a living thing you need to be careful. Just like spraying it around the aquarium you need to be careful not to put too much in the tank at one time. As you want it to break down before it harms the fish.
Hi Victor, I wouldn't know how hydrogen peroxide would interact with water in a fish tank, but my impression would be that it wouldn't be too effective. But as I said, I have no knowledge of aquariums. :)
After about 4 months of use (prevention once a month, prevention during repotting, treating H2O2 on new orchids - all of those are terrible ideas btw) I managed to kill one rescue phal, almost killed one catt seedlings, one flowering size catt and one flowering size phal (all of them have 0 roots and has no signs of coming back). Those worth about $100.
I realized that this turned into a vicious cycle: burned roots from H2O2 -> dead tissue -> grow mold-> burned by H2O2 again (thought you're treating mold) -> dead tissue -> mold...
I rarely use H2O2 any more now - majorly in humidifiers to prevent buildup and mold.
I realize 4 things:
- mold only grow on dead tissues
- root is probably the most important thing for the orchids. GOOD ROOTS= STRONG PLANT
- H2O2 does kill orchid root
- that shit actually burns your skin as well
I blame this to MOG. When I started growing she has so much video for all the beginner questions. She had taught me some bad stuffs. She's not as knowledgeable as I thought.

I appreciate it and was glad it helped. About Hydrogen Peroxide, I was confused when I saw it first and the more I researched about H2O2, the more horrified I got. I wouldn't blame anyone though, since we all get our information from somewhere. I know that in some years I might come back and take back what I had initially thought about one subject or topic, since I learned more about it. I'm still learning so much about calcium that there is one video I'm thinking about taking down. It's all a learning curve and unfortunately that involves tough lessons for all of us. I am so sorry about your orchids. I know well the feeling of investing that much to watch them slowly suffer then die. My heart goes out to you.
So let me get this straight. You kept routinely using H2O2 on orchids and are now trying to blame someone else for that? I've watched a ton of videos from MOG and never once did she ever say you need to constantly use H2O2 on your orchids. At most, she recommends using it once when you get the orchid from another source (either buying it or getting a gift). If you use it once, you should be fine since all the subsequent repots are going to be under your own care. Why are you constantly soaking your orchids in this chemical, especially once a month? Do you understand how irresponsible you are? Then you have the audacity to blame another person and, in the process, besmirch her. Own up to your mistakes instead of pointing a finger and trying to dodge the consequences of your foolish actions.

Okay so, I ended up using hydrogen peroxide according to an orchid channel.. now what do I do? Is there anything I can do to reverse it? I did this 2 days ago 😔 helppppp?
Hi Urooj, There's not much that you can do to revert this situation after using hydrogen peroxide. If your orchid didn't react badly, that is great news, because it probably won't at this stage. Just make a note to not use it on the roots again and it should be ok. If the orchid is start to dehydrate, and the leaves start to turn leathery and wrinkled, then the roots took a hit. Turn up the humidity around the orchid's leaves, because the will be doing the absorption of water and humidity until the roots grow back again. Sometimes just adjusting the humidity can save the orchid.
Hi Amanda, it's Carole again. I started using hydrogen peroxide every time I do a repot because of the recommendations of Miss Orchid Girl who I think initially started using it to kill infestations of Bush snails and apparently it worked. Just out of interest are you using info specific for orchids that has come from a published source, eg the A.O.S.? I would love to see their views on using it. The part about it travelling up the stem and doing damage on the way is very disturbing.

Thank you for commenting. Yes, I have seen her channel and I know of several other well known orchid enthusiasts who also use Hydrogen Peroxide. I know some orchid societies back its use, for example the Saint Augustine Orchid Society recommends using it.
Yet, I still disagree.
I tend to think outside the box and question a lot of what is presented because I like to know why things happen and how they happen. So I am totally aware that this video is a bit different. Yet, I have found several orchid growers who agree with me. (Yeah!)
In all the videos I publish, I first write an article an post it on my website. In those articles I post my sources and list more in depth reasoning of what and how I make my conclusions. For this video, you can read the article here: orchideria.com/hydrogen-peroxide-and-orchids/ I keep the posted sources down to a minimum, since no one really reads that part of the blog, but I usually read over 20 sources before I write each one.
For example, on this article, I cited 2 sources:
-"Compound Summary of Hydrogen Peroxide" written by National Center for Biotechnology Information, published on the National Library of Medicine talks about everything you could possibly want to know about Hydrogen Peroxide. I found the part where toxicity interesting since it was tested on numerous species and the results were recorded in a graph. -Title: "Hydrogen Peroxide" written by the Division of toxicology, published on the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry talks about what Hydrogen Peroxide does. It's published by the CDC, so it's more human-related, but a lot of the info applies. This article will convince you to not use Hydrogen Peroxide on your orchids, and I take a direct quote form the first page, "Exposure to hydrogen peroxide can cause irritation of the eyes, throat, respiratory airway, and skin. The main thing that I see gets lost in the "passing on of information" is that Hydrogen Peroxide is great to use to remove insects, bugs, snails and other creatures, but from there, the information has expanded to include info that HP is a bactericide, and that it's ok to use on roots, which just isn't true. Although it doesn't kill the orchid, it can do considerable damage to the roots. That's what I hoped to portray in this video. :)

That's why my new roots that had started growing in turned black....wow...ill never use it again....
It might not be only rhe hydrogen peroxide. If all the roots are turning black, it might be other reasons too,, like overwatering or not enough air circulation. If just one or two will turn black, then it's probably Hydrogen Peroxide.
@@Orchideria its the peroxide..lol ive been having issues with what i thought was white mold so i was spraying it every time i thought that's what it was thinking it wasn't hurting it because everyone says use it....it wasn't mold turns out its normal lil hair looking what ever its called and ive been burning the new root growth...i may actually lose that one... My favorite too!! Sun surf...i had 3.. Im now down to one " good" sun surf. It's been a learning experience for sure!!! Thank you so much for your videos your extremely helpful!!! I started mine in water culture about a month after my first one and its been a full yr. Of ups and downs. I love it tho.

The numbers should be subscript in formulas
Hi John, Yes, the numbers should be subscripted. I didn't have the time to go into my script editor and change each one, so I left them the way they were when I was editing. When I wrote the article on my website, it was a lot easier to subscript them, so there it's correct. but each video is so much more demanding (time wise), that I just left them the way they were. Is there something else besides the sphagnum and bag method for no root orchid?
Hi Theresa, you can place your orchid in a very humid place, like on top of wet sand, and apply rooting hormone. Other than that, I'm not sure what else could work.

Great info as i do use it when i repot a new orchid..however i do rinse it off, not leave it on but i wont do that anymore. You made me laugh a little about propulsion. I can only say that it's because of people like you who watch and comment that I've grown as a channel. I still have so much to learn about video making and editing and all that stuff... Look up elephant toothpaste, 6% or high hydrogen peroxide (from beauty supply store). Instructions on Utube! But seriously, thanks for the education on hydrogen peroxide!
Hi Susan, I hadn't heard of elephant toothpaste before! That was an interesting read. I found one article where they teach you how to make it at home. It sounds like something fun to do, unless I'm the one who has to clean up after it.
It is an extra Oxygen element; and there are 2 Hydrogen elements in water!
