    I've been using a sprinkle of cinnamon across the top of the soil,,, the gnats usually come in on new plants from the store where they overwatered... It takes a couple of watering to really spread the cinnamon around,, the gnats and any fungus is gone... I do love H2O2 also,, but love cinnamon and the plants find it a treat.. Gorgeous plants btw...

    Great video! You did a fantastic job! That plant is a lucky one! When I pot up a plant, I like to put a few cans up-side-down on the bottom of the pot to keep the roots a bit elevated (I put the dirt right on top of these cans). I loved the risers in the saucers. I did not know they were around. Again, I use up-side-down cans to elevate the pot further from the saucer, if needed.

    I love H202 too, such a useful thing. I use it for watering esp. in winter (to prevent fungus, root rot and give the plants extra boost - they seem to like it and grow better afterwards) and to kill fungus gnats. I tried it also on spidermites in soil, but it didn´t work on them - they hid and survived it. I never used it on leaves but will give a try when needed. Thank you for the tips - I can extend its use now 🙂

    • @BobCampbell530
      @BobCampbell530 Рік тому +1

      I also found that H2O2 did not kill fungus gnats. I ended up replacing the soil, but since then I have come across a couple of preventative measures that I have yet to try. They are to cover the top of the soil with either vermiculite or diatomaceous earth.

    • @SparkleInMoonlight
      @SparkleInMoonlight Рік тому

      @Bob Campbell yeah,some fungus gnats always fly away, but H2O2 doesn't seem to be sufficient to eradicate them at all. But it's helpful anyway

  • @Trazynn
    @Trazynn Рік тому +1

    Surrounding the plants with sticker sheets works great as well. This doesn't improve the soil however but if you hang those sheets everywhere around the pots then the gnats will eventually go extinct.

    A taller pot holds less water in the bottom than a shallow pot because there's more gravity pulling the water through the soil column counteracting the capillary action which creates the perched water table at the bottom of the pot. So if length and width are the same a bonsai pot will hold as much or more water than this one. Big pots appear to hold more water because people will up pot from 1 gallon to a 35 gallon. All that's happening there is the plant doesn't have enough roots or foliage to use all the water.
