The WORST PURCHASE I Ever Made!? My Destroyed Porsche 914

- There's even more bad news with my Porsche 914, so we're up to visit @yorkshirecarrestoration to check out what they've found. It's early stages, but this is quite the financial disaster! Head to fvrr.co/shmee to check out the services available to you and use code 'SHMEE' for 10% off!
After buying the VW-Porsche 914/4 a few months ago, we knew it was going to be a wild ride and a lot of work ahead, but it constantly seems to be even more and more. With Steve and Ryan making some amazing progress, it turns out that the bodywork is a disaster wrapped in a pretty dress, which isn't exactly great.
Following such a long tour on the roads of Europe, it's great to be back at The Shmuseum, and today jumping into the Ferrari Purosangue for the drive up to visit YCR. Along the way we've got some errands and things to collect, plus the spare parts of the 914 to bring back home ready to be retrimmed.
However, it turns out that there are even more disasters hidden under the fresh looking paint on the 914, so we've got quite a long journey ahead to turn this into something beautiful - but when it is done, it's going to be an epic Shmeemobile!
Thanks for watching, Tim

The Zenvo is taking too much money.
It isn't worth keeping because it it costs too much.
A C8 Corrvette fitted with a supercharger is an alternative to the Zenvo, and costs a lot less. It would give the experience of supercharged V8 torque for much less money and the mid engined experience.

Love it Tim, thank you to all of you for popping down once again. Patches certainly is throwing up some surprises, but nothing we can't fix. Excellent video 😊
Well, to be fair, project cars are always money pit. But you do this because we love cars
We sure do!
Cars cost a lot but it’s all worth it.
A restoration because you love the car. If you had the financial head on, it would be in the great garage in the sky.
Having Martin around in your videos exponentially increases the liveliness. Such a nice chap!
Martin is amazing!

Glad tony finally has a sign going up in the garage was surprised he didn't get one orginally
Yes finally. 🎉
Awesome to see the Turbo transport Sign, Tony is a long time supporter of you're channel. And loyalty is important.
tony is such a cool guy. he often replies dm on his instagram account!
Seeing the "Patches" in the quarter panel absolutley sent me!
That was a funny one from Ryan! If only we could keep it like that
@@Shmee150 he can always come back and do it once you have the car resprayed
@@Shmee150 Given that "Patches" and "Porsche" have seven letters, don't you think it would be cool, if possible, to have custom made "Patches" letters (in the original style) and put them on the back grill instead of Porsche? A subtle but nice mod for the car.
@@Shmee150 I'm sure if you took a photo there will be someone somewhere who can turn it into a sticker
@@33trnGreat minds think alike. I helped the YCR guys transport Patches to petrolhedonism and had the same conversation with Ryan... I have already taken detailed pictures and can make it happen if Tim so wishes😉
914 has a lot of known flaws constructed into it. Would love to see this one done as a restomod making it better than new. There is a podcast with Roland Kußmaul where he describes what they changed on a 914 to race it and came out with a car way better than a 911 of this time.
It's amazing what filler can hide...!
The guys are doing a splendid job on 'patches' and I'm sure, will restore the 914 "correctly" to pristine condition.
The angle at which you showed your ‘FUV’ it looked like a mk1 Focus RS. 😊
At least you know the car is in the correct location to get fixed . Yorkshire car restoration do amazing work on cars
Yorkshire Car Restoration do some awesome work. Well worth having a look at their project videos.
I can’t wait to see a video in the future of the 914 going around the ring and also your other modern classics such as the Clio V6 and 1M.
What a trip together this is going to be
Shmee, you likely have lots of options in England, but here in Canada there’s a company called Restoration Design (Waterloo, Ontario). They make fantastic panels for 914s and other Porsches, but in particular 914s the sale panel being one of them of course their prices are quite reasonable, and given the value of the pound to the Canadian dollar you’ll probably do quite well.
Why not add a six cylinder and make it a 914-6? Seems a waste to rebuild it only to keep the tiny engine
100% agree
@@AB-80-X How about he likes it?
@@AB-80-X Content
@@AB-80-X I think you have completely missed the point.
Doing these old cars is such fun, I love doing it. The massive filler fests seem to be very common in older, so called, resto jobs it never ceases to amaze me, but those guys seem very good so the end will be marvellous!
Your garage always looks so beautiful. The AMG cleaned up nicely.I really enjoyed that Swedish Video, with you snow drifting. You had a permanent smile and were laughing the whole time. What an experience.
It'll be worth it in the long run, if it's anything like my classic mini or the shmini it'll be a go kart!
omg animated Shmoo is so adorable!
Just love this project as so many of us have sent down this road as speaking for myself it's not always easy to splash the cash on a fully restored car in one go and even though we might spend more overall during our bit by bit restoration our projects give us a lot of memories and you certainly will know every aspect to your car and can truly say you know it inside and out... This is such a different project for you Tim as mostly it's new out of the box cars or cars just needing a bit of a transformation that you take on but this is the full Monty......
LOVE this restoration project!
Maybe configure a number plate to celebrate the resto when completed 😂
Some sort of combination around your regulations there..
“Patche$$”
Shematches
Great work and personality from YCR.
Well done for visiting the guys at YCR.
Tim! Do you know anything about the number plate currently registered to the vehicle? Also will there be a video on the Petrolheadonism Underground setup this year?
Yes I have the current registration, but it will be changed before it's on the road. And yes, lots of cars at PHU and a video of what's there!
@@Shmee150 marvellous, see you there!
WELCOME BACK SHMARTIN & GEORGE!

So glad Brad can drive the cars 🤣🤣
Should take the gt black series up to nc500 😉
I can't wait until insurance allows him to drive some of the fleet!

@@thenorwayauto.Tom left a while back now
Ryan and Steve are the best in the business..you have the best autobody guys in the world 🌎 and the whole team at YCR..
Have to say I enjoy the simpler day-to-day garage updates as much as the fabulous trips
I love Martin! He should have his own TV show in the U.S.!
Loved this video!!! This is what Tims needs to do - have a fun team to compliment the channel!!! Everyone loves Martin - characters and banter…. The tour videos are too repetitive now - in my opinion. Inviting guests to the Shmuseum to show their cars off is always entertaining- fixing up cars using the new workshop etc…
One of my teachers has also baught a 914, but luckily his 914 already has a good body and only has some tiny spots of surface rust, it does need a full engine rebuild but he does everything himself
It makes me feel good looking at this video, getting a £1000 offer from the workshop to change some bearings.
Good luck with the restoration.
You will -never- easily financially recover from this.
All in jest though haha, I love your channel and this project! A restoration is usually always a bad financial decision, but it's fun and rewarding. And I really enjoy seeing the process, so thanks for taking us along this wild ride, and can't wait to see your first drive!
Oh dear...... that poor thing got the Bondo special. Lovely 🙃
i have to applaud your ability to not just use the purosange constantly that car just seems so perfect for every occasion!
My word Shmee I've seen a lot of cars but this one lol. It will be great when it's finished and i can say for everyone great to watch it's progress.
that guy really knows his stuff
Wow this is not for the faint of heart! Good luck mates!
Well done. Finally, someone taking an external interest in YCR. They do so much good stuff for tubers but never had the recognition… eg Matt Armstrong has never been back or referenced their ace work on the 6 series
That 944 is a labour of love, its great that you are the custodian of a rare car , money well spent, and a real head turner once the lads have finished it
It's a *914*
Not a 944
Big fan of all your videos since 2016, will there be more road trips with the gt black series?
Tim, I really wish you had purchased a speedster you could have stuck a rotary in it, would’ve been wicked fun😂
You have to stick a turbo on this, give it a bit more pep!
When the Porsche is done,it will look great🎉🎉
I always loved the 914. It was a grown up X19 in a way with true mid engine layout. Looking forward to seeing the filler chipped out and the body how it should be. Couldn’t help noticing the CSI or CSA on the lift behind…..
12:40 Tim "Ya ,Ya,Ya, I understand,Ta,Ya,Ya True" BUT really thinking "I haven't a Clue what your on about But will it be Ready by next Week"??🤣
Considering you can pretty much restore this car for like the same price as a set of new tires for one of your hypercars, that should put things in perspective.
Loving the, I think zinnober red E30 Touring in the back ground
Tim was thinking last night since 2014, I don't recall you having a week off. Maybe 3 days, that's about it. Thank you, Tim. Love it.
Grinding hard to make the best videos I can!
@Shmee150 love it, brother. Thanks, Tim.
He’s got making content down to such a fine art when he goes away on road trips is just like a fun holiday. I don’t see Tim a sit on the beach kid of guy. 😂 I’m sure he has his own version of downtime. Guy must get a few hundred emails a day all demanding his time although I know he’s got a team behind him. As we have seen it doesn’t always go to plan but then that’s life.
@@SWR112 tim, he is living the supercar dream bro
I'll take one of those 914's and use it under an old basket case 356, that I will make into a Speedster
Costa Mesa Style. @JerrySinfeld
Great video as always Tim. Can you tell me please just how big the Barn/garage is. Length, width, height? Thank you Sir I’m just curious.
The good thing about the Porsche is when it’s finished you’ll know every inch of the car will be perfect
Having owned 3 914s I think you need to find another body to start the restoration over..
That Porsche doesn't have patches of filler, it's been iced like a wedding cake, Rj in Oz
great update, loe patches !
Shmee150 Great Video I'm glad Martin and Weebo are back on the channel setting up the bathrooms and that Patches is coming along pretty well and I can't wait to see more progress on him and I'm glad all Shmeemobiles are doing well
Welcome to the project car ownership experience Tim! 😄
Thanks , The Best of The Best !
Hello From Finland !
Shmee, you should put some of the boards on the shop. I would buy one
Yorkshire knows what they're doing! 👍
The body/chassis on this car will be better than it ever was out of the factory. The cost and time can be a bit stressful with such undertakings, but this car is going to be an absolute gem with these pro's making it right!
My 1st car was 18 years old. I was 17. It too was rusted to bit's. Throughout the next year. Loads of body filler, glass fiber and metal work.
End result was my final coat of primer. You couldn't tell the difference. The week before the final 2k paint 🎨 spray job, i wrote it off. Body filler holes everywhere! 😂
End of the day. Project cars are fun! But only if you're doing the job yourself 😁
Since you are neck deep in the 914 restoration, I think you should do some upgrades to the engine when rebuilding it to make it a bit more powerful.
Patches needs to be the new badge on the back or the reg needs to be patches when finished
Tim,Not sure if anyone as asked already, but what brand are the foam/sound insulated tyres? 914 will be worth it once finished….love it!
Oooh interesting thank you ..I’m a little out of touch with modern vehicles ..I’m more classics up to very late 90s …thank you 👍🏼👍🏼
Is the factory foam still in the rear panels? It should be above the rear lights…
1) You should have inspected the 914, or had someone inspect it, better before purchasing it. 2) All the cheap 914s usually have a little rust on the battery tray, and the rocker panels. I used to have a rusty 76' Porsche 914/4 2.0 that was no where near as bad as this one. 3) This has to be one of the worst 914s I've ever seen. For first Porsche's, I would have highly recommended a 944 or 968. Thanks.
You are able to buy a finished set for a wall frame from Metal, to be totally filled with insulation!
Pro tip: Store your tires that are off the car in tire bags. These should be airtight and opaque. Reduces dry rot.
Amazing Tim keep up the great work if ever you aquire and damaged vehicle I would recommend Rob and Chris @ salvage rebuilds uk in Kent their UA-cam channel is brilliant and the repairs are outstanding just like Steve and Ryan they leave no stone unturned and great hard working guy's ❤
Awesome projekt💪
Just gotta say shmee your attitude never fails to make the videos just that much better your enthusiasm and excitement about every car and thing you do is just awesome man keep killing it excited to see what surprises you have coming up for us
Thanks for the support! You enjoy life more if you are positive with things
Could we see shmee in a manta one day?👀 we had an open day at our local old vauxhall dealer and got a few old cars in including a 400 wide body twin slot! First 400 I've ever seen in person and it's inclined me to really consider one soon.. maybe not a 400 but a gte exclusive!
Tim, you know that car has to be nicknamed "Patches" now. (I had a cat named Patches when I was younger). I hope you took a good photo of the name. You can make a sticker from that. New merch! ;-)
Absolutelly the same experience i've had restoring my mustang. Tons of hidden rust, body filler and holes 🤣
I can't wait for you to drive it
Cruise Control, even though it's been with us forever, it's still one of those " game-changers " 😬👍🏻
Tim. I know you’re always transparent on costs etc and not too sure if you’ve made a video con this previously. But approximately how much do you spend each month on general maintenance of the fleet? I’m not talking about service costs etc. but the touch ups you do after road trips. Detailing etc. things like this
That’s a nightmare.
These guys will do this.
😎😎😎👍👍👍
Imagine having your own tyre shelving xD It's insane the amount of graft needed to restore old cars
Should have approached Richard Hammon to have it featured his TV show. I'm sure Niel and Anthony could have done it for their ratings
I would look for a pristine body and start with a clean example vs trying to rebuild a rusted out abandoned basket case
Time! This was expected when the car comes from the USA and your car is not dangerously full of putty anyway. I grew up with American cars and read Swedish car magazines that only deal with American cars.
I remember reading about imports of American cars that looked like your Porsche when you bought it. This was in the late 70's and then during the 80's like many that were imported to Sweden and when the owners had to renovate the cars and sanded down the paint. Then they discovered that they had fraudulently renovated by using chicken netting, newspaper and putty during renovation. This happened to several Swedes and it was not uncommon for half the car to consist of just chicken netting, newspaper and putty. So Swedes who were going to buy cars in the USA learned to carry a magnet that you put over the entire body, to make sure that you don't cheat with then chicken netting, newspaper and putty or partial putty repairs.
So take a lesson when buying a used car that has been in the US, to have a magnet to bring over the entire body.
Tim I noticed you left the Ferrari in the entrance of the garage, if the door accidentally gets closed it will hit the roof and capputt
Masterpiece Presentation
Trust the process 👌
More pictures of your SLS Black Series, please.
Intelligent guys👏
Ahh ive been there, the more you go back the more you find. You end up seeing rust on parts you never knew existed haha
You should always inspect a classic car with a magnet. The filler and patching on the 914 is nothing compared to Harry's garage Lancia fulvia.
Where was your paint thickness gauge when you bought this project?
Ouch. It's a learning curve; however nice the paintwork, don't buy them without seeing them in daylight and crawling all over them first. You'll be carrying a screwdriver and a magnet in a velvet bag from now on i imagine.
Something characterful about any old Porsche & a 914 is so very rare in the UK , Tim are you going to have the car as its down to its barebones converted to RHD , Porsche never made any but Crawford converted them to RHD and plenty were also converted in Australia .
put a 2.4S motor in it. it will make it all worthwhile
Proper grafters ❤
Patches is a perfect name for the 914
3:39 the apprentice/labourer does not like shmee look at the way he is looking at him
Looks like the same person that worked Harry Metcalfe's Lancia Zagato had a go at the filler on this too!
I know it’s not your car Tim but is the xj220 going to be on a video anytime soon? 👍🏼
Am I the only one who fast forwarded past all the fancy stuff in the garage to see what's going on with the disaster car? If the 914 were a British car the Heritage people would have a new tub available for it, which is what it needs. I've done deep chassis restorations on Alfas and Jaguar XK-Es, I would've walked away from that 914.
Hi shame that was very interesting video, but was on earth have you bought as a car?, but it will turn out ok soon? it will be interesting how the car turns out. I do enjoy your videos please keep them coming. have a good day.
