The Caterpillar D8 is a medium track-type tractor designed and manufactured by Caterpillar. Though it comes in many configurations, it is usually sold as a bulldozer equipped with a detachable large blade and a rear ripper attachment.
    1935: RD8 (132 hp) introduced.
    1937: The "R" prefix dropped, D8 debuts.
    1940s: D8 2U Series (148 hp) introduced
1950: D8 new front-rounded grill that would last until D8K was replaced by D8L in 1982.
1955: 1H Series D8 ends production; 191 hp D8E and D8D introduced with new 1,246 cubic inch displacement (CID) D342 diesel engine. D8D had a torque converter and D8E had a direct drive transmission.
    1956: D8D replaced by D8G.
    1956: D8E replaced by D8F.
    1958: 235 hp D8H introduced.
1965: Power increased to 270 hp
    1970: D8 46a 48a power increased 280 hp
    1974: 300 hp D8K replaced the D8H.
1982: 335 hp D8L replaced D8K. The D8L was the first D8 with the elevated drive sprocket undercarriage.
1984: D8L SA (special application) for farming applications premiers. Available with a three point hitch, for mounted implements.
1987: D8N (285 hp) with differential steer transmission, the first track-type Caterpillar tractor to have one.
    1996: 305 hp D8R replaced D8N.
    2000: D8R Series 2 replaced the D8R.
    2004: 310 hp D8T ACERT[1] replaced D8R Series 2.
A lowboy (low-loader in British English, low-bed in western Canada and South Africa or float in Australia and eastern Canada) is a semi-trailer with two drops in deck height: one right after the gooseneck and one right before the wheels. This allows the deck to be extremely low compared with other trailers. It offers the ability to carry legal loads up to 12 ft (3.66 m) tall, which other trailers cannot. Lowboys are used to haul heavy equipment such as bulldozers, industrial equipment etc.
Fixed gooseneck (FGN): allows a longer deck length and has the lightest weight. These are lower trailers than normal, with low-profile tires, usually with drop ramps in the rear to facilitate loading of equipment, but are not actually considered "lowboys". The neck is arched in such a way, that it when lowered, it becomes a ramp thus allowing the front tires of equipment to be pulled onto the deck.[2]
Fixed-neck: the neck is fixed to trailers; offers the lightest weight, but sacrifices the ability to detach and load over the front
Hydraulic detachable gooseneck (hydraulic RGN or HRGN)): fastest and easiest to detach, at the expense of weight and deck length. It is the most common and versatile of lowboy trailers; the gooseneck is detached using large hydraulic cylinders to raise and lower the trailer and a small cylinder shores the neck to the truck, removing the neck so a large piece of equipment can be driven over the front onto the deck of the trailer for transport. The hydraulics can be run from the truck auxiliary or from a pony motor mounted in the neck of the trailer.[3]
Mechanically-detachable gooseneck (mechanical RGN or MRGN): while usually lighter than the hydraulic detachable gooseneck, users sacrifice ease and speed of detaching. Used for long specialty hauls.[4]
Mechanical folding gooseneck (MFGN): The deck folds down to ground level to provide a ramp for from trailer loading

fun idea for the second Dozer, have it being retracked, have one track brand new, and the other one heavily weathered and worn, unhooked, to make it look like they are putting on a new track. *edit* Dont shake hands with Danger, and make sure to change one track at a time to avoid a roll-away

I was fortunate enough to join the Navy Seabees 78to83 as a Heavy Equipment Operator and ran different tractor trailers including DM 800 Mack's hauling heavy equipment and operating the equipment. Then the last 40 years running many types of heavy equipment .I built this same dozer when I was growing up on a dairy farm around 73 I believe and I've built a couple of the DM 800 Mack's. This channel takes me back many years.

Oh, Round 2/AMT molded the Caterpillar D8 bulldozer in yellow again! When AMT first released this kit, I had bought one. The polystyrene was yellow, making assembly reasonably easy.
Twenty years or so ago, AMT re-issued it, as well as Ertl's massive International Harvester off-road dump truck and cement mixer. Unlike Ertl's original issue of their kits decades earlier, however, AMT had cast them in a light grey, increasing the complexity of assembly by an order of magnitude! 😠
To see the D8 in yellow again--saving the builder enormous amounts of work--delights me. A wistful joy, though, for my happiness will be vicarious.

I just got the AMT White Freightliner, kit number AMT-620, and noticed it has the same construction company decals as that bulldozer lowboy trailer kit, your ‘65 El Camino, & your crew chief ‘72 Blazer. That would go well with your trailer & lowboy trailer set. Not to mention all would make a great and cool diorama.

I built this trailer 5/6 years ago. It damn near fell together, one of the best assembling trailers I've ever built. I replaced the molded plastic "wood"with real wood. Turned out amazing.
I was waiting for this to be actually released to order it. Glad to hear it's finally in! I'm gonna get this, the big International rock truck, and a separate trailer.(To modify to haul the big rock truck!)

you did good again! the weathering definitely takes time but necessary. wished they would have included another set of flags and oversized load sign to be put of a tractor! by the way, the kit I put together back in the '70's came with white plastic for the lo boy and had a decal for the dozer grille with round "holes"- something about copyright stuff changed it.
I seem to remember reading about somebody taking that grille and drilling holes in it to make it look more real - said he would never do it again, his eyes got sore!

I'm likin' this build Chris! The non-sleeper version of the Freightliner cabover tractor with the single-drive would look dope with this kit. Also, the Mack DM series day cab conventional would also tie this unit together nicely. Just some quick suggestions to mate up with this awesome trailer/ bulldozer kit.

Question. If you still have the Autocar 10 wheeler semi truck from a long time ago, do you think you could do another one but weather it and patina it and put it in a diorama where it's sitting neglected?

would it be possible to add strips of balsa wood for decking in stead of the provided plastic sheets of simulated wood? Great build by the way, love the dirt dozer in contrast to the fairly clean trailer

    • @hpiguy

Of course, redoing it as real wood wouldn't be very hard.

Showing a semi truck hooked to the trailer would have been nice, seems like nobody that do trailer model kit and assembly review videos show them attached.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  3 роки тому +1

I do kit reviews. From the box.
If I show a picture of something that's not in the box, half the comments are people screaming that they bough the kit and there was no truck in the box.
