- Michael McKean stops by the BUILD studio to talk about the hit AMC series, "Better Call Saul." Before he was Saul Goodman, he was Jimmy McGill, a small-time attorney trying to make a name for himself. The series follows Jimmy's works with private eye Mike Ehrmantraut and their adventures. McKean plays Chuck McGill, Jimmy's brother. What's it like playing brothers with Bob Odenkirk? Tune in to find out!

Mr. McKean is so damn good at playing Chuck. He plays the whole bitter, jealous, stick-up-his-ass type of character so flawlessly.
ya he make me hate him so fucking bad !
A lot of empathy for him at the end though, he gets better and is completely rejected by Howard and everyone around him, even to the point of Howard buying him out of the company with his own money.
yes, brilliant acting by McKean.
I remember him as "Squiggy" ? or something from happy days. You guys remember that?
@@bobross5580 He was Lenny, Squiggy's other half.
A very brilliant actor.
as you see he is a nice person
Impossible this guy was never nominated for Best Supporting Actor. He should have won at least twice for Chuck.
Dave S I’m bobs interview, he says it’s because most of the viewers watch through streaming, which happens a few months after it airs on amc. By the time the actor gains recognition for their performance, the show is already a year old. It’s a shame that Michael probably won’t be around a whole lot in season 6. Biggest Emmy robbery of all time.
I agree - I hated him so much by the end that it proved how awesome he is at it. The guy is lovable in real life
@@TrebleForTheBass agree whenever he came on screen i hated him so bad
he looks so cool with beard!
Michael McKean your range is amazing and as much as I hate Chuck I absolutely love the life you have given him. Thank you.
What a smart thoughtful man and brilliant actor. He brings so much to the role. He deserves an Emmy this year.
The way he speaks and his cadence is so soothing. I had only planned to watch just a little before work but now I'm late. Couldn't turn it off. :P
His last scene in season 3 was very painful, sad and unnerving to watch...he's an excellent, underrated actor. Loved him in Best in Show...he played a gay dog owner, hilarious mockumentary
It might be just me, but I think he looks better with the beard. It actually makes him look a little younger than he does without it, which is a pretty hard feat to pull off.
I really like the beard.
same ^^
I think the hair is also different
Ominous use of foreshadowing to Chuck's ultimate fate in the opening scene. The writing of this show is so smart. No minor detail in the dialogue should go unnoticed.
I've been accused of overthinking _Better Call Saul_ , but considering how much greatness was purposefully baked into _Breaking Bad_ , I don't think so. After defending my interpretation, my adversary had to admit I might be right. It was symbolism / foreshadowing I figured out in season 4. I couldn't find anyone else who had arrived at the same conclusion back then. In my opinion, it became super obvious in season 5. I should have written about it or made a video. I bet it's all over the Internet now.
I'm just thankful Gilligan, Gould, the BCS writers and other talent taught me how to engage with good movies and TV.
Last night, I watched _Cliffhanger_ on Netflix: at best, a mediocre film. I vaguely remember enjoying it on the big screen, but not so much last night. It's a hollow, poorly-acted piece of spectacle-infused crap. When the material makes John Lithgow look like a bad actor, the script must be awful indeed. The "good" guys and "bad" guys have no depth. After watching BB and BCS flesh out various shades of grey in every single character, this seems unforgivable. The one thing that was supposed to redeem the film-spectacle-wasn't good enough to do so. So, if you want a very "meh" experience and don't want to think, this is the film for you. Sometimes mindless spectacle is just what a person needs, so no judgment from me. Maybe the spectacle works better on a really big screen.
Chuck is one of the greatest and most original characters to ever be on tv. Michael M deserves every award out there.
Every time I hear this guy interviewed he's damn impressive.
Just realized that at 1:22 Chuck foreshadows his own death
1:59 chilling.
Loved that he mentioned Ben Mendelsohn. Awesome Aussie actor.
Love this dude he is a very indepth actor, and really explains how he gets into character. You have to relate to the person you are playing in order to become them 👌
This dudes such a great actor he made the fight of 2 siblings thrilling, as thrilling as the rest of the show with cartel and gun fire
I know he is a professional and very experienced at learning lines, but to get the script 2 weeks before they perform it seems like magic to me - to be able to do that is magic
As much as I adore Michael, I'll forever think of him as Lenny from my childhood in Laverne and Shirley 😍
Perfect performance....!!! hello from Costa Rica
Oh, the feels... That scene of them reminiscing about the book... It breaks my heart. Mr. McKean is such a wonderful actor!! I really want to see him in new projects, he's terrific!
His contributions to the show rank up there with the best acting I’ve ever seen.
Loved your performance in Saul.... You were also fantastic as 'Fear' in that star trek Voyager episode.
when i first started watching this show, i couldn't get past the first episode, i suppose it came down to missing breaking bad so immensely. 2 years later i tried to watch the show again and i finished 3 seasons in one weekend! Its an incredible show, it takes a while to pick up but by season 2 it honestly is right up there with breaking bad as one of my favourite shows! michael mckean is such a great actor too.
Michael Mckean role of chuck is spot on, every scene with him in it is just incredible.
HE's great, I always liked seeing him on Jiminy Glick.
Michael is so lovable, intelligent and diplomatic in his responses. Such a cool guy.
Nice interview, Ricky! (And published on my birthday!)
You know that an actor is unbelievably good at a role when it's simply impossible to mentally separate him from the character in an interview.
Most guy's acting chops only go up to 10, but this guy goes up to 11.
My favorite show !
Un actor extraordinario.
Soothing voice
This guy is so wise
These characters are so damn complex I need vince and Peter to get the whole cast together and talk for a few hours about the show and the characters and really break it down
I a still waiting for the Spinal Tap reunion movie.
rasnac - Rock an' Roll!
Top shelf actor...
Jimminy Glick's harp playing bandleader. Michael is the best. Such a career.
Am I the only one who needs a Glick Fix?
@@michaelj.r457 Oh, I need my Glick Fix too. Gotta have it!
Such a tallented man
Hello Cleveland!!!!
Chuck with a beard !! Very Handsome !!
Chuck ( the character) is a brooding, scheming, jealous, petty, and deeply flawed person who is only like-able to his brother Jimmy.
Chuck and mike the actor are opposites btw.
You're partly right, do you think Kim will feel better about Jimmy after she hears about Chuck? A big part of this show is perspective, no single character is all bad the way you described Chuck, in a lot of ways those words described Jimmy better actually, especially by the end of Jimmy's story.
Chuck made me very sad at the end. He destroyed himself over his anger and jealousy of Jimmy.
morris fletcher, he works at the groom lake facility
Kinda crazy Chuck was supposed to be on Jimmy's from the beginning, but the creators thought the way Michael McKean played Chuck made them change him into the villain.
Guy Guino He's interesting as villain, but I wonder how would have been his character as Jimmy's side.
Michael McKean was robbed of a Emmy BCS cast was too.
Such a Spinal Tap moment... :-)
The night light that would get so hot they were afraid it was gonna burn everything down... damn
Yeesh
We come from France.
Nice beard!
Lots of times we see things from Chuck's pov. IMO, his one truly inexcusable action was hiding behind Howard to prevent Jimmy from joining HHM as a lawyer, esp after Jimmy did such an ace job with Sandpiper; rather than having balls and being straightforward with his brother from the outset: "I don't want you to join HHM as a lawyer; I don't even think you should BEa lawyer. And here's why". The course he took in backstabbing Jimmy was craven.
He is brilliant! I can’t stand him on the show, but I love to see his scenes!
It might sound weird, but I feel had Michael been bitten by the Drama bug, instead of the comedy bug, he could have had the kind of roles Jeff Daniels plays. Like Jeff, Michael is pretty good at taking unlikable characters like Chuck and the Anti- Brady of the Brady Bunch Movie and make them interesting to watch.
I wish the interviewer would have handed him a battery
Michael McKean and Jim Carrey would make a great movie together
A little foreshadowing there with the daffy duck light
what ive never understood about this show is why do they have to use those kind of mics? why cant they just get the mics that attach to your clothing
I thought his answer was really interesting when he was talking about approaching comedy and drama the same way.
"Bob... you're not a REAL actor! You're just a comedian."
Just kidding, I'm sure they get along fine ;-)
Your character MADE us see Jimmy for what he was. A scam artist through and through. Chuck was jealous, which caused him to constantly point out Jimmys issues, but that’s what made us see Jimmy for what he was. When Chuck died, Jimmy was unchecked and that left Kim to foster his alter ego
Is it me or the crowd is quiet ? Every interview, it's dead silent.
They don't speak english.
I still see Lenny.
Afterburner You old.
5:38 “they’re laying pipe, to use the colloquial”.... lol I don’t think mckean knows the colloquial term he’s actually referring to... 🤔 😅🤣
🏠 🔥
I ate a burrito 🌯
LWYRUP
HE DEFECATED THROUGH A SUNROOF
DO STONEHENGE!!!
MLennholm
These go up to 11
no were not gonna fucking do stonehenge!!
I don't remember anything about _Moonlighting_ except the title...I'm getting old.
I don't remember watching this video a year ago...I'm definitely getting old.
it's better than breaking bad
ConRGraphics I am debating that as well
Not even close. Better Call Saul is good, but Breaking Bad was much better. The pacing in this show is glacial.
I'm not even talking about the story arcs, which can be a bit slow, but the individual scenes. There is a line between letting a scene breath and dragging it out for way too long. I don't need to see a guy driving down the road for 78 seconds while cameras pan his face from every imaginable angle. There is a ton of that sort of thing. The story arcs are slow moving as well SPOILER ALERT: last weeks ep had basically three things going on: Kim took a new job. Saul got revenge on the kids who robbed him. And Mike set up a camp for Gus Fring's workers. That took 45 minutes to unfold.
I like the show. I just don't like the pace. Breaking Bad was shot the same way, but it is much worse with BCS. I didn't see XFiles, So I can't comment on it. I guess this is just how Vince Gilligan works. Just a matter of personal preference. Neither of us are wrong. I would like to see them tighten up the scenes. Other people, like yourself, don't mind. Again, that is just a matter of personal preference.
Last week's episode was even worse. 40 minute run time. At least 9 minutes of it was montages. I am going to wait and watch the last three episodes together. Nothing is happening.
DAVID veilleux I guess you just like when things are rushed?
I hate chuck so much I may leave Michael mckean 5k in my will.
What a fantastic actor
I hate Chuck so much ! Mckean plays him so damn well tho
L&S Laverne & Shirley/Lenny & Squiggy... are the male Dopplegangers...
He looks cooler with the beard. Now I can see the actor, not Chuck ! He was so Chuck-ish without beard.
Next role - Kris Kringle.
Homegirl at 2:09 in the Yankee top is so beautiful
When you cant stand a character or anything about him....That is when you know the actor is doing one heck of a job. Chuck drives me nuts... Mikey is Alright.
Most of these types of interviews, no matter how great the actor, are boring. McKean is interesting though - intelligent and insightful.
Spoiler alert...
Anyone else cheer when Chuck died?
Not really I cant stand the way he treated jimmy but he was still a person with a problem and je was starting to get better
no :(
I don't often say this but he sure gives off an asshole vibe. Until this interview I thought of him as living a dreamlike George Plimpton life. I was able to distinguish the villainous role on Better Call Saul as just a well played role, so he had grown even more legendary to me. But he seems dismissive and superior in this, the only interview I've seen of him (except in character for the Spinal Tap character).
I just saw another recent one and he really is prickish. Believe me, I have held him in legendary status, just legendary, until hearing his dismissive and superior tone.
Seems perfectly professional and polite to me. Often I find that people who posess an exceptional ability to articulate their thoughts coherently and incisively seem condescending to people who aren't well acquainted with individuals who can do so.
It's just a vibe. More likely it's the kind of thing when someone who is highly intelligent has a hyperactive mind and seems always on the verge of cutting off the other side of the conversation because it's not going fast enough for him.
I think it’s fair to say he is not extremely dissimilar to his character... but you don’t know the man.
Slippin' chuck
Build show doesn't
Why is the host wearing trainers? Like, have some respect.
The interviewer looks like he doesn't care shit
