  • The Emmy-nominated series, "Better Call Saul," follows the story of Jimmy McGill, six years before he becomes Saul Goodman and begins to represent Albuquerque's Walter White. McGill is a small-time attorney hustling to make a name for himself. He's a forceful champion for his low-income clients, an underdog whose morals and ambitions often clash. Emmy-nominated star Bob Odenkirk swings by BUILD to talk about the series.
BUILD is a live interview series like no other-a chance for fans to sit inches away from some of today’s biggest names in entertainment, tech, fashion and business as they share the stories behind their projects and passions. Every conversation yields insights, inspiration and plenty of surprises as moderators and audience members ask questions. It all happens several times a day live and live-streamed on BUILDseries.com.

I agree, but a script, no matter how well written it is, is just words on a page without the right actor to interpret it. Bob Odenkirk is a revelation in Better Call Saul. I hope he gets to do more dramatic roles.

better call saul is much more plausible and based on reality. i had friends deep in the meth scene and we all agree that many premises from breaking bad were just ridiculous. from the manufacture of the product to the gangs and cartel hitmen it was mostly hollywood. there was even a mythbusters episode dedicated to breaking bad. in real life, walt and jesse wouldn't have survived beyond season one - either they got caught or killed before season two.

Vince Gilligan and company couldn't have picked a better actor to play Saul/Jimmy than Bob Odenkirk. Some comedy actors are also adept at playing drama beautifully, and Bob is definitely one of them. He's able to bring the light, the dark, and everything in between that's required in order to bring this character to life. Yes, the writing is amazing (that goes without saying), but in the hands of a lesser actor, we wouldn't have the richly nuanced performance that makes us respond so strongly to this character.

Yeah I mean it would be easy to write Chuck as your typical jerk, but in his attempt to contain Jimmy he ultimately played a major role in transforming him into Saul (Who arguably is far worse than even slipping Jimmy). He meant well but his first mistake was not encouraging Jimmy to be a Lawyer at HHM (Even after Jimmy delivered them a MAJOR case) his last chance to turn Jimmy around was that major case with the old folks home, Jimmy had used fairly honest means and even was helping Chuck recover from his imagined illness. He meant well but he ultimately created the monster (or a far worse one) that he sought to contain or destroy.

When I write I usually end up writing the ending first, or I more exactly, WHERE the characters and situations will end up, not details wise, but in general. Then the story naturally emerges of how it came about. Then I let the characters just lead me to that place. It’s very organic. Another great thing to do when you write is when you have a great idea, put it in the mix and make note of it, even (and especially) if that’s not where you are in the story currently. Then when the details from one point to the other materialize, it will be there waiting and can be added at the right time. Not all ideas stay in of course, nor should they. But it can be wonderfully creative, freeing and expressive to write that way. The most wonderful thing about writing novels is freedom from the confines of having to write in linear form; and the story doesn’t have to read in linear time. And that is one of the things I’ve often loved and admired about BB and BCS, (and the best of both film and television). They both play like reading a great novel. Where the pieces fall into place without playing in sequential order, often showing us the result first, then the journey (like the airline storyline from BB and the entire premise of BCS if you think about it) which builds terrific tension and leaves room for lots of creative expression, suspenseful tension and dread, and fully formed characters and storylines. Firstly, the actors and acting on both are simply second to none. But Vince Gillian and the writers on both shows are incredibly gifted writers, genius imagineers and storytellers really. Some of the best ever in the history of television or cinema. Without a doubt. There’s a reason these shows are part of creative writing college curriculum as well as part of the curriculum for psychology, directing, drama arts, and English majors. Because it’s PHENOMENAL ACTING, WRITING AND STORYTELLING ON EVERY LEVEL.❤️

I always thought he was funny on the Ben Stiller show and Mr. Show, and in his small parts in comedy movies, but never realized what a great actor he could be until I saw him in B.B. and in Better Call Saul he’s even better. Especially in the first season, he had episodes w SO MUCH dialogue. I don’t know how he pulled it off, but he’s shown that he’s a great dramatic and comedic actor.
That being said, I also agree with him that Michael McKean deserved an Emmy for season 3.

Movies and TV Shows always *emphasise* the meanings, which is unnatural but intense to watch, on the other hand, Better Call Saul does *not* emphasise the meanings which makes it realistic, natural, calming to watch, which might be a little boring but I think a protagonist walking in style while there was a big explosion behind him and he didn’t even move an inch is just not acceptable. I would rather watch the natural movies and TV Shows.

Watching the scene in the insurance agent's office, it never even occurred to me that Jimmy was genuinely breaking down. The "emotion" was so forced and contrived. Jimmy is a smart guy, if he's going in there actually trying to get a prorated rebate on his insurance, he knows he has to bring something better than that "pretty please boo hoo hoo" bullshit. The whole thing was nothing but a dig at chuck from beginning to end. I'm absolutely stunned to hear Bob say he thought Jimmy was actually losing it and that he relished doing the scene as an actor.

He's not Jimmy McGill. Jimmy and Saul are fictional characters that he has to portray. He's Bob Odenkirk. Hence, why he refers to his characters in third person. Don't know why that's so hard for you to understand. Also, he does not play himself. Please don't diminish his work by saying he's the same as Jimmy. He's wonderful at playing Jimmy but he's not like him in the slightest.
