"The PlayStation2's erea of dominance has long gone" even tho it's still the best selling console of all time, I think that's still a good deal of dominance.
Anyone remember when your friends came over and bought over one of there games to play at your house and when it was time for them to leave and you wanted to keep playing they would just take the game out of your console but the game would still be running and you could still play the game like 10 mins after or until the game would finally crash?

Oh god, one of my most heartbreaking PS2 moments: So at my house we would always use my mom's nail polish remover and a q-tip to clean the game discs when they didn't want to play right, and it worked GREAT. So one day I brought my copy of Kingdom Hearts 2 (a most beloved game) over to my friends house to play. It had seen some heavy use, and hadn't been cleaned in some time, and didn't want to play right. So I had my friend go get his mom's nail polish remover and a q-tip (a trick he had never heard of) and started cleaning the disc... ... ... Only for it to get cloudier the more I cleaned... ... ... Apparently his mom used a different kind of polish remover, and it ATE AWAY AT THE TOP LAYERS OF THE DISC! The game was ruined, and I was heartbroken, because I was NOT one of those rich kids, and it would be at least a few months before we'd be able to afford another copy of the game. If you read this far, thanks!!! I guess this isn't exclusively a PS2 era problem, but that's when it happened to me lol
I remember using my mom's perfume to clean my ps2 disks (I had Kingdom Hearts 2 too my dude) but it was always expensive perfume so she would always yell at me.

@Falcon I can't even count how many PS2's I've rebuilt! I learned how to polish the disc's so the damn machine could read it! I would volt mod the systems to get the most out of them. Even adjusted the laser voltage when it refused to read discs, just to get a little more life out of it! I still have a box of parts, and quite a few games. And a working PS2, with a number of controllers, including the big orange gun that I bought with Resident Evil : Dead Aim. The gun only works with the old CRT TV's though, And I gave those up a long time ago! LOL! I don't play the console anymore, but I still use emulators to play the games. Good stuff there Falcon. Have a great day!
@Alex Kirchgessner I'm sorry I don't. All of my information (books, files, and computers at the time) were lost in a house fire. From what I can remember, there are 2 potentiometers (small, but evident) that control the laser and the servo. Mark their position with a Sharpie, and take a resistance reading. Move the pot all the way CCW and take a reading, then move it all the way CW and take a reading. Put the pot back to the original starting point, and turn it in the direction of least resistance(which will give more voltage to the laser). Do this in small increments, and test each time. You don't want to max out the voltage, cause you will fry the laser very quickly. That said, you do need more voltage than the stock setting, because as the laser ages(through use), it requires more voltage to do the same job. Now you may get another 3-6 months out of it or 2-3 years out of it. And you can always adjust it again when it stops working, and hopefully get a bit more life out of it. I hope this helps! Have a great day! Oh yeah, you may have to adjust the height of the laser too. The screw is on the assembly the laser rides on. And again, mark the position before you move it, and only make small adjustments with tests in between. Remember, a little goes a long way!

I didn't have one till around the end of ps2s life cycle so I would just play the first three of the onimushas, sly 1 and 2's and god of war 1 and 2's and 007's opening over and over
I always left it in there, when transporting my PS2 anywhere i always put the Memory card somewhere safe in my Shadow the Hedgehog case so it wasn't lost
Jacob Molyneux that's mainly because of game models and textures. Today's weekly updates for the most don't make any change to those things, and in fact those are actually burned on the disks. Updates usually fix bugs and security. Once upon a time, bugs were 99% fixed before the game launch and so was security. And those little harmless bugs that were found months or years after the release, were just really funny to exploit. Also, many PS2 games are 5/8 GBs big.
@Jacob Molyneux Uh... they're 4-8GB excepting the few blue (CD) discs, ~700MB. And game Devs today don't really GAF about customer satisfaction after they have your $60. I remember Sims 3 was unplayable for more than a frigging year of its release, for example... too busy on the expansion to fix the base game. 🙄
My friend brought his ps2 over for the first and last time. The disc tray was out i went to grab a drink. Ps2 on the ground. Went wireless never looked back
Ahh remember when you could just play a game with all the content and without downloading it to your hard drive for an hour before playing? Good times ...
Back in the old days when you didn’t have to pay to play with friends, back when split screen was still a thing, now everything is ps plus, Xbox live, Nintendo online, etc. Back when it was pay once and play forever.
split screen is 90% of gaming for me. having mates around. laughs. good times. either that or lan/ system link. the good thing about split screen on a pc is you can play any splitscreen supported game with a screen each if you first turn two monitors into a virtual single monitor in nvidia control panel etc. nice right.
How could you miss this?? When you load a game and everyone crosses their fingers hoping it would actually load instead of saying the disc is scratched!
I used to know if the game works or if there is no data just by looking at the beginning save screen and where the little things in the background went
Some of my most anxious memories as a child was waiting to see whether the disk would work, and then the relief or terror that followed as the PlayStation 2 logo either appeared...or not.
Mine always worked flawlessly till I took to gamestop to sell it. Then all of a sudden it didn’t work. Of course the guy was like uh um trusting to sell us a dead console is see.🤔I was so embarrassed. I took it back home and opens it up and a little connector had come loose for whatever reason. Plugged it back it and worked fine.
hopefully you're not using a modded ps2 and pirated discs. i almost never had any problem with that when playing with original games with my unmodded ps2. my first ps2 which was modded on the other hand..
You knew a game disc (or God forbid the console itself) was beyond saving when you booted up the PS2 and the red screen came up every single time. (happened to me on 3 games and my first PS2)
Put disc it Wait to load Pray No....... No No No NOOOO!!!!!!! The the red screen! OH GOD! Takes disc back out Lick it/ spray with windex/ use water/ clean it. Dry it Put it back it And start praying again! 💿👏👅💦💿👏 That’s how the ps2 worked
Davon Smith I had that happen sometimes in 2013 when I was just about to get a xbox 360 and I took the thing apart and cleaned the sensor and it never happened again
I remember watching someone try to fix a disc with toothpaste. I believe the idea was to do it like the disc cleaners by removing one of the outer layers of the disc (where the scratches was), something i recall you being able to do a few times (3?) before you removed too many layers for the laser to be able to read the data.
Lol. I never lost my memory card. I just never took it out the system. When I did, only because I was taking it to a friend’s house or something, I would put it in a game case that had a card holder. I had 2 of them and I grouped the games by which ones I played the most so I could choose either slot to save on without changing them.
Don’t forget about when you were going to delete a saved file and the sprite sometimes would weep in sorrow that it was about to be deleted was pretty awesome
Yeah, when you look at today's Blu-ray.. it's gotten so much better. My PS4 games don't have a single scratch, meanwhile PS2 games would scratch by themselves.
They weren't that fragile. Or did you man handle yours? But we still kept on hand cleaning cloths and solutions. Along with that that thick brown repair liquid. That stuff is a life saver, unlike the repair machines that actually did damage to your discs.

Settings >diagnosis.... Went to the gamestop guy, (before game stop was game stop). To find out how to fix the red-screen. It was Always 1 of 2 things; 1)either the disc was damaged enough to not be able to read properly by the ps2 optics or 2) the optics itself

The MANUALS!! I would take them to school with me and read them over and over again, or just stare at the pictures. The best games always had their manuals in full color. :D
My favorite one would have to be the one included with "Jak and Daxter". The damn thing unfolds into a massive adventurer's map. Completely pointless and useless as far as teaching you how to play the game, but holy crap that thing was really cool. Didn't have many PS2 games, I think I've only got around ten if I'm making a really generous guess. Was always broke back then. Anyways, my point is that I don't know if doing stuff like that for the manuals was a common thing. Still kind of heartbreaking between the loss of the manuals and not having the published Strategy Guides. I know it wasn't PS2, but the one for Star Fox 64 was pretty amazing with all of the flavor text.
The early Metal of Honor games had introductions in their booklets to set you up for the story in the game, and MOH Rising Sun even had a guide to all the weapons and a guide to the characters in the game including backstories for all of them.
I remember when i used to put in a broken disc as a kid that i know that it dosnt work and praying for it to somehow work because i rubbed it with rubbing alcohol Good old days
we freaking put the discs on the refrigerator because we thought when the disc got scratches it meant there is space betweens data and freezing them would squeeze that space between them and disc would work LOL
Sometimes the rubbing alcohol would work though. Was great to clean the CD face with, and often that was all it took. I also remember the Gamestop a couple miles away from my house had one of those resurfacing machines that could fix scratched CDs and make them work again. THAT was some good shit back in the day.
And let’s not forget that heart stopping moment when you tried to play your game only to see that dreaded CORRUPTED blue cube where the game’s save file icon used to be on the memory card page
I absolutely hated that once i found one there was a slim chance you could actually delete it but most of the time it was a waste of space on the card. Does anyone know what it actually meant?
Ahh the disappointment when the disc couldn't read. Also the moment when you had to put like 3kg weights on top of the ps2 slim for it to read the disc

Oh god, one of my most heartbreaking PS2 moments:
So at my house we would always use my mom's nail polish remover and a q-tip to clean the game discs when they didn't want to play right, and it worked GREAT.

-Played dvds
-played music
-Controllers were basically indestructible and simple to hold
-The little icons on the memory card screen(look at those for hours as a kid)
- the little ps logo on the ps2 could rotate
- that error screen
- that startup screen
- that main menu screen
- when ur disc was so scratched up and after constant cleaning to PlayStation 2 logo pops up and than u wait on the black screw. Crossing ur fingers the game will work this time
- Ran the game 90% of the time even if it was beyond deep scratches
- playing rpgs like final fantasy and kingdom hearts and forgetting to save
- not having enough space on memory card so I would literally cry because I had to delete one if my game data's
- it actually got me and my family to play together
-Internet was limited so when u had internet to look up cheats for games u would write them down on a piece of paper
- SOOO MANY GAAAAMES
RPGS, PLATFORMERS, SHOOTERS, FIGHTERS, RACERS, HORROR, HACK N SLASH...IT HAD IT ALL

Matt Christie Hey, do you know the Correct resistance values for the PWR-808 Laser of the 7700x model? Mine doesn't read shit.
Its funny 'cause im only sixteen and i remember most of the things mentioned
Matt Christie I thought I was the only one that adjusted the laser voltage.

The good old days when games were actually released finished. Instead of "constantly" updating.
Yeah, that really brings my piss to a boil.

1)either the disc was damaged enough to not be able to read properly by the ps2 optics or
2) the optics itself
yeah that screen always scared the hell out of me, along with monster oct from the first spider man game. weird times
This video was the first time I ever saw that screen. I still own and play my PS2.
@@brianm6117 you had one of the last "Fatboy" ps2's (I'm guessing). Heard they were the most stable ps2's available. The main board was done differently than previous models so some parts wouldn't swap.
I remember when games were actually consistently good.

No. You still had to worry if it was a poorly done licenced game or sequel. The PS2 was full of them because it was way easier to rush development and crank out games in 11 months
@@FraserSouris I don't know about you, but all my games were muuuch better than most of the games I play now. That's why I play on PC, so I can emulate
No. Ps2 had some awful games.
Fun fact: The number of blocks in the startup screen represents the number of games you played (currently saved on the inserted memory card).
@THUND3R xD The more you know...
the power switch behind the console
Why? You can just pull it out
PS3 also had one
I remember when developers put a story on their games back then
Bethesda still does bro
I remember when games was finished
Theman 114541 you should try remember grammar
They still do, even more than they did then, stop filling your ass with nostalgia
The good old days when you bought a game, and you didn't have even to think about dlc's, micro transactions or battle royale
And a disc would play straight away, without waiting an hour for an installation
Man...those were the good old days
Wth does battle royale have to with those lmao
Gulf City Ben
When your disc would get scratched and wouldn’t work at all.
In all seriousness, the PS2 was notorious for long load times and frame drops. Devs frequently complained about the PS2’s limitations.
Installations fix those issues

I remember trying to keep it on over night only to have my dad turn it off while I was asleep cuz it was loud as hell
Like a Jet Engine
get ps 2 soim :)
Glad I wasn’t the only one that had that problem. I was sad to discover it was turned off.
I remember when all u had to do was follow the dam train cj
Deviant GTA San Andreas
I could never beat the first mission
benito mussolini lol
Kenneth Jones you no it
You just a liability CJ
The GTA ones were the best in my opinion, they were like magazines or newspapers that made you feel like you were part of the GTA universe.
Love Ratchet and Clank manuals. Still playing on ps2 btw
I remember when i used to put in a broken disc as a kid that i know that it dosnt work and praying for it to somehow work because i rubbed it with rubbing alcohol
Good old days
I used cologne!😁
Kamel Awad Same
Toothpaste work better but had to leave it on the freezer for days after that wash and clean it with a towel.
we freaking put the discs on the refrigerator because we thought when the disc got scratches it meant there is space betweens data and freezing them would squeeze that space between them and disc would work LOL
Sometimes the rubbing alcohol would work though. Was great to clean the CD face with, and often that was all it took. I also remember the Gamestop a couple miles away from my house had one of those resurfacing machines that could fix scratched CDs and make them work again. THAT was some good shit back in the day.
Good old days when we came home just from buying the games,no need to download or update just insert it and enjoy
Omg the struggle to clean the disk with windex and like toothpaste
\\\ J_O_E_Y_333 /// and having to hold the disc tray lid closed with a book so you could play when the latch would wear out🤣
Jacob Collier ya I remember doing that
I just wiped it on my shirt and hoped it worked
KiddDripp haha i remember doing that like every time i wanted to play gran turismo 4 and hoping that it would work
yeah, i did that alot on my pirated xbox 360 burned discs too, those things always struggled to read.
And let’s not forget that heart stopping moment when you tried to play your game only to see that dreaded CORRUPTED blue cube where the game’s save file icon used to be on the memory card page
This happened to me with Kingdom Hearts and I cried pretty hard :|
I WAS TRAUMATIZED BY THAT CUBE
I absolutely hated that once i found one there was a slim chance you could actually delete it but most of the time it was a waste of space on the card. Does anyone know what it actually meant?
i forgot that
I filled up a 8 MB Memory card, then I got a second one that was 16 MB and I never filled it up.... 16 MB WAS MASSIVE!
Shoot i have 2 cards filled😂
I had a 32 and 8
I have the speciale memory card .
The red and the blue .
Those 2 is 16 MB
I have a black one and a blue one
I had a 32mb and half of my 16mb card filled
When we had to pray for the game to load up and say PlayStation
For real man. Quite literally praying for God to let us play Max Payne
@@BariNgozi i had to pray for all games
Ahh the disappointment when the disc couldn't read. Also the moment when you had to put like 3kg weights on top of the ps2 slim for it to read the disc
@@blurredwolf2339 i didint have to :)

I remember the dvd remote control you bought separately me and my cousin and brother used to play a mission or a die each on grand theft auto San Andreas, then you'd pass the control on after you died/completed a mission, I used to wait till one of my siblings was driving at full speed or flying an aircraft then I'd hit triangle on the dvd remote to bail out of the vehicle they'd plummet to their death and I'd get my turn quicker and get all the best missions 😁 until they both found out I had the remote control, great days 😂
