I remember paying £299 for mine at launch in 1996. That was without any games. Going from a Sega Megadrive to this is probably the greatest leap in gaming quality there ever was in regards to consoles. Not just graphically, but also the audio. I have another early PS that I paid £25 in it's original box which I have refurbished and now works like a dream. While the debate is still out that the early 1001/1002 models produce superior audio, mine certainly sounds excellent and on par with my PS4. Dare I say maybe better!! Waiting on my copy of Silent Hill coming as it's probably the game I remember most, but don't remember completing, although quite difficult to find for sale in good condition these days.
I remember Ridge Racer on PS1 only loaded the disc once when you first turn it on. After that you could take the game disc out and replace it with an audio CD and it would play the audio CD while you raced.

That specific swap trick only works on the early production consoles. @Merchantrouge84 Sony still did great during that cycle. It started out rough but currently the PS3 and 360 are sitting right at 84 million consoles sold each so not too bad considering how far behind they were and the fact they had to compete with the Wii at their launch AND the 360 had an entire year on the market without competition.
@smokehead 69 Nah their were reasons. Really good reasons why they backed out. "Sony got the rights to create and sell CD-ROM software that would run on the Super NES-compatible machine, which it called the “Play Station.” It wouldn’t have to pay Nintendo any royalties or get its approval for CD-ROM games. This meant that if developers and consumers did embrace CD-ROM gaming on the Super NES, Nintendo wouldn’t get a dime off any of those game sales-only the hardware sales. @@TheAlphaOmegaX3 It is still Nintendo fault for partnering with Sony. If Nintendo go with Sony or they not partnering, gaming history would have been different. We might stuck between Sega and Nintendo. Heck, Xbox might not exist because they were inspired by Playstation.
My friend scored a PS2 Big Boy at a Goodwill in Atlanta for 20 bucks with 2 memory cards and the PSU cable all it needed was an AV cord and controllers. I buy my games on Amazon used Great Condition or above or new if cheap enough like I scored GT2 for 6 bucks shipped and there isn't a scratch on either disk. Currently I am playing Spyro 2 and FF IX games I missed back in the day. Also check Pawn Shops I got some PS2 games for Two bucks each including Vice City with the manual and the map.
Nintendo only "stabbed Sony in the back" due to the fact that they didn't realize the deal they reached with Sony would actually net Sony more money per game sold on CD than Nintendo would make, and this would include first party games Nintendo would have made on the format. Nintendo actually felt that Sony were trying to stab them in the back, so they pulled out of their deal without warning and instead approached Philips. Seems like no matter how you slice it, all that was really needed was better communication.
The first model 1001's were the audiophile's wet dream of cd listening. It's not just any old PSX. The back of the unit has the 3 jacks and that's how you tell it's the amazing audio version.
I have one, and it does sound absolutely amazing connected to some good speakers. I remember back in 1995 that it did sound that little bit different to anything else . Very unique sound. I'm not sure how intentional this was by Sony as it was just a gaming console after all but it certainly appears to have some fine tuning to the audio chip. I can't speak for the later versions as I've never owned one but certainly not much could touch the original PlayStation for sound quality back then. Not without spending lots anyway.
I used to have a PS1, loved playing on that back in the day (man that makes feel old). The games I used to play were Tekken, Tekken 2, Rage Racer, Ridge Racer R4, The Italian Job, V Rally, Destruction Derby, Crash Team Racing and TOCA 2.
Another interesting fact that may only be known to PlayStation owners in Japan and UK, was that you can buy a kit to make your own games called Net Yaroze, all you needed was a PC with an internet connection and the Sony Net Yaroze software development kit, which came with a black region free PlayStation. In the UK if the game was good it would be on the demo disc on the Official PlayStation Magazine UK. There were some good games that were build using Net Yaroze.
Man, The original Medal of Honour was by far the best title on the PS1. I still play my original copy today on my PS3. The environments are sooooo creepy and really took me to the time in which it was based on. The only thing i hate is not been able to use the analog sticks especially for aiming your Garand. It was truely a great game. I loved the menu screens and scrolling to the sw radio or the medal box. Still such a great experience. No zombies but the Nazis were creepy enough
I remember playing Twisted Metal on PS1 and being able to remove the game mid play and put in your favorite music CD and all the tracks would pop up on the games track list.

Here is something I'll wager isn't in this video that you probably didn't know. There might be a store near you that does Disc Resurfacing. This process can restore your old scratched discs back into working condition. Now go dust off your ps1 and play some classics!
@@shakesfirst2443 I also heard that wiping toothpaste on the disc using a cloth, from the inside out, would work. Didn't do jack for me. Maybe someone else got it to work.
@@Adam-cq2yo You need to be able to buff it smooth afterward. That's what the kit I use does. Gives it a rough buff, that rhymes, then you buff it with a smoother surface.
Just to let you know. You can only do this process about three times. You are removing the plastic that protects the data. If you take off too much, by by game.
The scratch and sniff discs weren't ever meant to be scratched, but rather, the smell was activated by the spinning of the disc in the slightly warm PlayStation, giving your room a smell that is associated with the environment of the game. Actually does add to the realism of Gran Turismo when you can smell the track and tires.
Still got my PS1, sprayed it gunmetal grey. also have an ace scart lead with extra audio out, which i made a tradition of getting for any console that supported it. Gotta love that kick-ass CD quality audio. And had Connectix VGS and remembering it working a little bit and Bleem! for a while.... Also i've ordered the PS1O from Australia that mimics the CD drive allowing you to play your games from a SD card "personal backups" i might add. I think I shall repaint the console though
1:11 We've had brick wall limiters for a long time. One of the albums widely considered as kicking off the loudness war is 1996's What's the Story (Morning Glory), only one year after the US release of the PlayStation. There's nothing to stop a PlayStation disc from using a loud master. Also, CD audio is excellent, but not the best. 48K audio also existed at the time. Take a look at DAT. Are you confusing audio compression with data compression?
I had to go check on number 6... I pulled out my copy of GT2 and smelled the disc... either you have been fooled or the scratch and sniff stuff lost all it's smell after that many years... just smells like plastic. :-(
Doy Owan it was a special edition released in PAL territories only. The discs are quite rare and hard to come about nowadays, but are very much a real thing.

Yoooo... I just bought a ps1 from goodwill yesterday for $4 with the controller and surprisingly it worked.
Lucky!!
Joer'ct Drew Yupp... now I just have to buy a memory card and a couple of games.
ItsSaucyBoy enjoy man so many classics
My friend scored a PS2 Big Boy at a Goodwill in Atlanta for 20 bucks with 2 memory cards and the PSU cable all it needed was an AV cord and controllers. I buy my games on Amazon used Great Condition or above or new if cheap enough like I scored GT2 for 6 bucks shipped and there isn't a scratch on either disk. Currently I am playing Spyro 2 and FF IX games I missed back in the day. Also check Pawn Shops I got some PS2 games for Two bucks each including Vice City with the manual and the map.
....yeah but aren't most of the used discs you buy are too scratched up to play...
Still have the original so I still enjoy my old classic games
Not without spending lots anyway.
it had a design flaw with the laser assembly but it's fixable though, by swapping it out with a KSM-440BAM
The only game I still have for my functioning PS1 after like 20+ yrs, is Castlevania:SOTN!
haaaaaa
Omfg that game. Think you beat it? Naw dog. You're only halfway and everything's upside down now.
@1:22 I love that background. Is there an animated version of it without the disc in the middle?
I used to have a PS1, loved playing on that back in the day (man that makes feel old). The games I used to play were Tekken, Tekken 2, Rage Racer, Ridge Racer R4, The Italian Job, V Rally, Destruction Derby, Crash Team Racing and TOCA 2.
You missed one...
#11. I Still have mine and it works like a charm, from 1999 =]
Ditto
I smelled Gran Turismo 2 on a flea market because it standed in the sun.
Now it's mine.
I miss Medal of Honor and SyffonFilter :( 007 was also a good game back then
I'm disappointed they didn't add Soul Reaver to the ps Classic
I feel your pain, that's why I bought a copy from Steam.
@@aiodensghost8645 I still have all my physical PSOne games but my PSOne's disc cover broke :c
Yeah, but what i really want is a full remake. With the original ending restored!.
@@Bulls3ye86 that is my dream 😭
Add it using autobleem or bleemsync
Hehehe. The connectix Emulator. Remember used to play it on my pc. Mostly for Symphony o fthe night. The framerate was very stable.
I still have an play my original play station I got for Christmas in 1997! cool video!
Sony invented the CD, they knew their own technology
Nice video
OMG!! Bleeem! That was amazing! I jumped on it when I heard about it. Final Fantasy 9 and Metal Gear Solid was my replay games.
I remember playing Twisted Metal on PS1 and being able to remove the game mid play and put in your favorite music CD and all the tracks would pop up on the games track list.
I dont have just one PlayStation 1 i went and got a PsOne as well . But now a days my PSP is my psone
Me:*realising that i have gran Turismo 2*
Me:*snorting intensifies*
At 2:16, you reminded me of my childhood. I played that game for HOURS on my PC.
I have them all from the first model to the PS4 ! And always love the psx boot sound brings a lot of memory when it came out whith ridge racer and Jumping flash!
Ahh yes I remember leaving my ps1 on for days at a time, stupid memory cards.
Here is something I'll wager isn't in this video that you probably didn't know. There might be a store near you that does Disc Resurfacing. This process can restore your old scratched discs back into working condition.
Now go dust off your ps1 and play some classics!
I own a Disk Doctor kit that I can do it on my coffee table. It's a slow process, but the shit works.
Thank you!
1. Ape Escape is awesome and taught me how to play analog sticks.
2. I used to listen to my game soundracks on the boombox all the time haha
I don't have to remember it, I've still got it😊
Nintendo: "Cartidges are the future" Sega: "2D is the future"
I really like the animated backgrounds with the moving X Circle Triangle and Square. Is there a link for download?
Still got my PS1, sprayed it gunmetal grey. also have an ace scart lead with extra audio out, which i made a tradition of getting for any console that supported it. Gotta love that kick-ass CD quality audio. And had Connectix VGS and remembering it working a little bit and Bleem! for a while.... Also i've ordered the PS1O from Australia that mimics the CD drive allowing you to play your games from a SD card "personal backups" i might add. I think I shall repaint the console though
I still have my original PS2
Ditto
I LOVE MY PS1.
4:22 yeah same for me and the jack black face made me lol
I remember Descent. Loved that game. Free floating Doom with lasers and missiles.
I member the PS1, I member!
😭 I chose the sega Saturn over the ps1 when they came out. Then 6 months went by and bought the ps1 And never looked back
1:11 We've had brick wall limiters for a long time.
Still have my ps1, works like it did the first day I got it in 1996, lost all my games but hey, looking to build that collection up,
I had a ps1, and I really wish I could find where it is 🤷♂️
Chill Zero where is it?
I expect a top 10 facts about the soulja console.
1:25 MediEvil was such a great game, I am glad to see it pop up in a video.
That cool collection item still with my 1,2,3,4pro.waiting 4 mine next=
(1998 flashbacks)
2cock
Christmas of 1995 flashbacks.
It may be dependant on region as to whether they did it for each copy. Pretty sure we didn't get it in Australia.
I got that then. SE PAL one.
You're not scratching the platinum version are you lol?
Mine still smells
I remember playing the old Metal Gear Solid demo every time i went over at my cousins. Then I got a PS2 eventually one christmas along with Dragon Ball Z Budokai. The first game I got after that was sons of liberty.
I remember getting Wipeout XL on this thing as a kid. Damn that was a fun game!
“Sony did the research and made the controllers bigger for the US”
Their calling Americans fat
Yee
Wow, nice video. Why does your voice change so much between video to video?
how you picj your slides and clips is just so SPOT ON. :=P
TOP 10 THINGS ONLY 90S KIDS WILL REMEMBER!!!
Was it called PSX
Yes. It's alt. name is the PSX
Evidently there was a ps2/dvr console called the psx which sold only in Japan that used the same ui that would latter be seen on the psp and ps3
The start up for the ps1 gave me chills as a kid and it still does now as a 21 year old
Fact #2 with the audio.
Tomb Raider 2, and Twisted Metal 2 in my cd player, they had some wicked tracks!
11. fact: ps1 the best console ever
I don't know if you're aware or not but PlayStation and PlayStation One are two totally separate systems.
Super Andy no
They're two different systems yes, but the same console, just like PS4 and PS4 PRO
Like the PSX. However, people still call the PlayStation PSX.
Not entirely true. The PSOne is like the PlayStation slim
PS One is the same damn system, just smaller than the original. also PSX was an old codename for the project
I remember playing the wwf in your house entrance themes off the game disk back in the day
I like this guys(birds) voice. It's the Type of voice that you could trust and have an in depth discussion about meleculer fragmentation in polyphonic science.
