  • I was fixing up this old Roland SRE-555 Chorus Echo and I got an idea: What if I replaced all the op-amps in the audio path with super high spec, low noise, "audiophile" op-amps?
Would anyone be able to tell the difference? Would it sound cleaner? Brighter? Different in any noticeable way?
I think the answer ended up being, IMO... yeah kinda? I tried to make a little video explaining my thinking and showing some before and after examples with the old LF353 opamps the Chorus Echo came with, and some new OPA2134 opamps that were drop-in replacements.
Let me know if you hear a difference? Or let me know if you're really smart with EE and audio gear and you've tried this? Or if there's some reason NOT to do this?
    Some notes:
I had the reverb tank disconnected when I was playing. I tried to keep the settings as identical as I could -- but after I finished editing this video I went back and noticed that the Space Echo was actually about 1db louder with the OPA's than with the 353's? I have no idea why this would be, really, but I'm not an expert, per se. I just generally know how to read schematics well enough to troubleshoot gear and get it working reasonably well (to my ears). Anyway, probably there are other oversights here and if so I apologize.
