- The 11pm edition of CBS6 News, missing the rest of the sports show. WRGB serves the Albany-Schenectady-Troy DMA, with studios in Niskayuna, and carries CBS programming.
Greg Floyd and Dori Marlin anchor the news, with meteorologist Steve LaPointe, and Doug Sherman on sports. Plus with the story on Elizabeth Edwards is Joel Brown, who now works with WTVD; back then he was with CBS NewsPath in Washington, D.C. Greg and Steve are still at WRGB today, and Doug now freelances for ESPN.
The top story is a "You Paid For It" on a renovation project to Centennial Hall. The building became an exclusive hotel for state judges, meaning the general public could not stay there; judges could be reimbursed $125 a night, and $37,500 a year. Among the people Floyd interviews is Roy McDonald, who also appears in a story on New York OTB (Off-Track Betting) which was shutting its doors.
In other news, Elizabeth Edwards dies of cancer; she was the wife of John Edwards who ran for VP in 2004. Elizabeth was an activist for cancer research and treatments and also was an attorney. The news also covers state tax cuts, a Pearl Harbor remembrance ceremony, Julian Assange is imprisoned due to sex crimes, and Liz Bishop emcees a "Make a Difference" event at Saratoga's casino hotel.
Weather is chilly, with the highest on the 7-day forecast being 37, which Steve LaPointe acknowledges as mild. The sports stories taped include high school basketball, including Shaker vs. Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa vs. Burnt Hills; plus teased in the news open is Jimmer Fredette's return to the 518. Jimmer was a senior at BYU (Brigham Young University) and was in town for a game against Vermont at the Glens Falls Civic Center (now Cool Insuring Arena); BYU won 86-58. He recently competed in the 2024 Olympics in a 3x3 basketball tournament, but wound up getting injured.
WRGB seemed to focus mostly on political and state-based news coverage out of all the five news operations. There's not a lot of fluff here, most of the stories are informative and the newscast flows well. They should stick to that format now, because I find the Sinclair-run WRGB to be unwatchable!
The news theme is Impact by 615 Music, and Lisa Malay is the voiceover. WRGB would use a cold open for its 11pm newscasts, which it started doing in 2003; before 2005 the cold open aired during CBS' split-screen credits. The graphics are in-house, but closely resemble WRGB's pre-HD look which was originally done for WBBM in Chicago.
