- Members of the Oakley Union Elementary School District Board of Trustees in California thought they were speaking privately during an online video meeting Wednesday but later found out the public could hear and see them making disparaging comments about parents. The candid discussion sparked outrage among parents, who started a petition calling for board members to step down. By Friday night, every member of the school board resigned. NBC’s Kathy Park reports for Weekend TODAY.

Like I guess we'll always make sure we're really well rested, well fed, no headaches or anything, so we're not irritable and so we're in the best moods when we talk with our friends, to make sure we don't speak rashly, and we write out ahead of time what we'll say to our friends before they come over, so we can think on it, make corrections and edits, and then make sure to speak at a good enough pace when reading those scripts to lessen the chance of any "mis-speaks". If we have some new or interesting thought or question that pops in our heads, we should just suppress that internally, dare not speak it to analyze it or get our friend's opinion on it - we just speak and think the approved version of things - and if we ever say any word or have any tone that might be considered by some 3rd party judge as not good enough, we should immediately just be homeless and friendless and a criminal. Just instantly lose our job, lose our spot in school if we're in school, be imprisoned perhaps. Yes, yes, sounds very politically correct. Maybe there should be video cameras in all our homes too or everyone should wear a body camera, even when it's just you and one of your best friends so others can monitor to make sure no one is speaking incorrectly.

Yep. Here in Texas our politicians take us for granted since we always vote red no matter how bad the candidate is. Texas is run on 80% oil and natural gas. That 80% failed in basic winter weather. Frozen gas pipelines, frozen equipment. The reason? Texas Republicans deregulated their power grid (ERCOT) and disconnected it from the national power grids (eastern and western interconnect). The GOP failed to upgrade their grid for severe weather. This failure happened twice before in 1986 and 2011. BOTH times the GOP FAILED to FIX IT.

Look at Finland, they have the best education system in the world, and the elementary school kids only go 2 hours a day, and get no homework. We need less school time and more subsidies for just basic child care really so kids can play and be free to be kids

My friends and I are all a THOUSAND times worse. And so are a good size chunk of the parents. Some of those parents just dont tolerate being on the receiving end of what they dish out every day, and want the free babysitters they think they are entitled to, to manage the little monsters they created with their own abuse and cannot control. Because people are a bunch of sissies. A lot of parents did want kids back in school so they don’t have to watch their kids during the day and they didn’t like being called out like that. These teachers just voiced their opinions, clearly they didn’t feel safe having kids back and they thought it was a private convo. Those fruitcakes who said they were “appalled” at what was said must be SAINTS then who never said anything in private convos that they would be embarrassed if the entire world heard. I did not see anything wrong with the zoom call. The problem is some of the parents DO use school as a form of daycare. Some parents have the thought process of from 7:30am to 5:30pm my kid is your problem not mine. I know there are students who go to school to be in a safe environment and some are at school for the breakfast and lunch meals. The district also needs to take in consideration how the teachers feel about going back to in person learning. The parents will ALWAYS want their kid out of the house and at school.

Complaining isn't what's bad here. They insulted ppl during an official public meeting. That violates policies put in place to conduct county business all of which are grounds for removal. However they resigned before removal so they get to keep all their perks retirement medical etc etc and they get said benefits regardless of circumstances. So they will be getting drunk on a tropical beach somewhere in 2 weeks time.
If the government forces us to send our children to school in the first place you can't rag on the parents for " wanting babysitters."

Agreed, however, that doesn’t apply in this case. Public officials have no expectation of privacy while in the capacity of their duties. They were in a public meeting broadcasting thoughts that were antithetical to their policies. They paid the price for it.

Its okay to be truthful about their thoughts but is not okay to air it for a parent like myself to hear bcoz it makes the school & Teacher I trust an unsafe place for my kids. I am a Teacher myself and I do think some not most parent take advantage of school system. But as a Teacher with a degree & credential I took an oath to educate the kids regardless of thrir parent background.

I feel fortunate that, nearing retirement, most of my inappropriate comments were never recorded on the internet. It is vital in this day and age to know when and where to comment. If I have something that could come back and bite me, I usually reserve it for a phone call or in-person meeting.

We really need to be at the board meetings to see what happens these meetings. It's not like your child's education depends on you and all you can do. Most likely you have some greater friends,if you would go and investigated ,know the teachers .teachers don't start out this way. They need to know your not the enemy. That one teacher disclosed medical information, it does not matter if it is Medical Marijuana or cancer drugs. He had no right telling the other teachers that his brother delivers medical marijuana to some parents. He and his brother violated HIPPA laws.
Our governments have the same attitude towards us. That is why we need term limits.

Remember Senator Bill Frisk from TN. He did his 2 terms and was highly effective (Senate Majority Leader) and then went back to his private life. What a template for the way things were done when the Constitution was written. Now we have far too many professional politicians who work for the party and not the people. The political machine keeps them in office. Perhaps you like it that way.

@Nick Romo it is backpedaling, the parents are asking very respectfully to open the schools because the kids aren't learning anything and are falling behind and the school board is saying "I'll F*&#* you up!" but when they get caught they are crying " we want whats best for the kids".
There should be no closed meetings. They are working for the taxpayers, & are accountable to them. Many schools should "clean house" & get rid of the teachers & administrations that have radical ideals & policies. Save the children!

My last ten years before retiring were spent as an elementary school custodian so I had a view of the aftermath of each school day. Teachers in tears was not an infrequent sight!
Parents need to take responsibility for their own kids and stop putting teachers in an impossible role of being better than society at large!
Parents really do seem to see them as their punching bag. It seems that as long as a teacher is receiving payment, they are expected to continue to babysit the kids not even interested in learning, as well as try who are there to learn. It also sucks these teachers don't have enough support from administration.

I'd like to see a regular school teacher handle an autistic meltdown without calling the cops!! I interned with Autistic kids some non-verbal and it would break my heart. With special needs kids you can give them a direction one time and expected to be done you have to be patient and repeat it till it clicks with them.
