Thanks so much for sharing this issue with us! This is the type of review that I want to see, not just being quoted specs that I already know from the keynote/website.
This is a hardware issue, specifically it's because of the orientation of the LCD screen in terms of scan line/redraw orientation. In portrait orientation, for the bigger iPads, the redraw direction is horizontal first, then vertical (eg. redraw pixels left to right per line, then top to bottom line by line). For the new iPad mini, and other devices that manifest the jelly scroll in portrait mode, their screen's redraw direction is actually vertical first, then horizontally (eg. redraw pixels top to bottom per vertical line, then left to right line by line). This is why the jelly scroll devices don't show the issue when the orientation is changed to landscape. This means they probably prioritized landscape orientation for content consumption on the mini.
That's interesting. I prefer landscape mode on most tablets and even on my phone's when the apps are cooperative. Obviously UA-cam is not a good example of that!

Hi Good video mate, can I ask though, you say you've got an ipad pro....and that you didn't include it in the test, because in your opinion, it doesn't have the jelly effect..... What ipad pro do you have? I definitely noticed it in the ipad pro 11 1st gen, but only in portrait mode, the only other ipad pro I've been able to test for the JE is the ipad pro 12.9 2022, and that definitely has it in portrait mode..... I really want to upgrade from my ipad pro 10.5 2017....it 100% does NOT have the JE in either portrait or landscape, I 90% use my tablet in portrait mode except when watching videos.....so what ipad pro do you have, and if you could confirm if its free from JE in portrait mode I would be extremely grateful......BTW subbed👍
Mine's the 2018 iPad Pro 12.9. All tablets will have JE but the difference is how much JE. The one with the iPad mini 6 is very noticeable compared to other iPads.
You know I noticed this on my ipad mini but it's such a non issue because you're not reading while the screen is moving anyway and you just ignore it after a while so don't go looking for it.
I got the ipad mini and have to say this isn't as big a deal unless you are really looking for it. It doesn't occur for me 90% of the time, just when I am scrolling content, eg. UA-cam, but not when I am consuming eg. watching youtube or movies etc. I really love the size, and when I am drawing (the reason I bought it) the scrolling issue doesn't matter at all.
If I hadn't seen this video and read about this, I would have thought this was a feature of the iPad to make it look like scrolling was animated somehow. To me, it looked/looks quite cool, and there's really no reason it should bother me if I'm scrolling content which I can't really read at the speed at which I need to scroll it for this to show up anyway. If I scroll at the speed at which I can read/focus on content, I don't get/notice this. So whether this is something Apple needs to fix or whatever, seems like a very first world problem on an otherwise awesome device which I have no complaints about. If you're considering an iPad Mini because, like me, you want a device with which you can consume/produce content on the go (including books, movies, games), learn to draw/paint, and have a nice time with a gadget, don't let this typical case of "focusing-on-the-minutia-I-was-taught-about-by-someone-else" issue affect your choice, this is one of the most affordable and capable tablets out there. If anything, use this as a way to haggle for a better price if you can. 😉 This is coming from a dude that used to avoid Apple devices at all costs, so I'm not biased toward Apple nor do I care about any company's image (they are all out for our money), this is merely a comment on how people perceive issues that are often pointless to complain about when looking at the bigger picture.
I personally believe iPads are the only products Apple makes the "best". I find it hard to agree for their other products unless you are a specific consumer.
I have the same thought when I got the first gen ipad, I thought it really was just a cool animation that apple do to make it appeal more to the consumer… 😂
I also see on iPad pro the jelly scroll but because it's 120 Hz so it refreshes much faster making the jelly scroll less perceived but it is still there
iPad mini 6 jelly scroll wave is more noticeable because the wave height is tall, and noticeable because this effect wasn't there with iPad mini 5. iPad Pro wave has lower height. Samsung OLED tablets also have higher wave height like the mini 6 but the 120Hz just makes the wavy effect look smoother but does not reduce the height of the wave.
lol. That would be great if they could do it. But that would make customers who bought the first iPad mini 6 unhappy. Then Apple will have to charge a higher price to make those customers feel like they were not left out by not buying a more expensive iPad mini. lol.
Does it matter where your finger is when you do the scrolling? That is, does having your finger on the left, right, or center of the screen make any difference?
Apple Charges a Premium Price for their Products and We get this in Return. 🤦♀️ I refrained from Buying the iPad Mini till the Reviews Come Out, for a Reason. 😓
thanks. no I know what the fuzz is about. if they implemented 120Hz the first place then it would have been this worse, and I will be interested more on the tablet.
@@teohontech7141 right😁. I've seen the ifixit video, it is indeed smoother. i guess this is a good issue being blown up as I think they might release a new ipad mini with 120Hz as early as next year and not two years or more
I always thought of it as "Apple's-cute-bubble-effect" animation which has been there for a good while. Never thought of it as a problem because it never troubles anything else, other than scrolling, when you're consuming media. Think about it. Scrolling is just like 'getting to another page', and you can't take in info at that point. So why bother? People making fuss about it are just that; people wanting to make a fuss about something. :)
Except the earlier iPads did not have this effect and/or does not have this effect as obvious as you can see on the iPad mini 6. All Samsung tablets with OLED has this effect but not as obvious as what you see on the iPad mini 6 which uses an LCD and hence is usually not affected by something like this. It is what it is

It's not "cheap", it just has to do with the orientation of the refresher, other than that it has the same IPS display as the Air 4 and 9th(although that is not laminated). You can notice the same thing on an Air 4 in landscape orientation.
I played with the Mini 6 at Best Buy and the jelly scrolling effect was obvious and bothersome as was the scaling on the home screen. $499.00 for a paltry 64gb and another $59.00 for a flimsy cover and over $100.00 for the pencil. @@teohontech7141 It will be less noticeable though because the opposite side is faster than how the content looks under your finger so it won't feel like jelly.
It’s definitely hardware issue. Oneplus 5 have this issue because they turned the screen panel (inside the phone) upside down. I assume if you turn iPad mini 2021 screen upside down in portrait (w/ front camera at its chin), the jelly effect would disappear. If that so, Apple messes up their screen panel from the inside and this issue cannot be fixed by software update.

@@teohontech7141 thanks a lot for the quick reply mate👍
But what about sidescrolling games in landscape on the ipad mini 6? Will it jelly too?
Only affects scrolling with fingers. Does not affect games or watching videos.
This is coming from a dude that used to avoid Apple devices at all costs, so I'm not biased toward Apple nor do I care about any company's image (they are all out for our money), this is merely a comment on how people perceive issues that are often pointless to complain about when looking at the bigger picture.
@@teohontech7141 yeah and I think the solution is promotion to reduce the wave animation like on the Samsung tablets
For $500 tablet Apple should do better
There is news that Apple is planning to release a new version of the iPad mini 6 with a 120Hz screen soon to solve the gel scroll issue.
It doesn't matter. As long as in vertical orientation, there's the effect.
@@teohontech7141 Thanks. After reading the other comments and explanations about this being a hardware display scanning effect, it makes sense.
its very apparent on mini6 on my 240hz monitor.. whereas this seems non existent on ipad9.

Also to see if they'll release a 128GB model. 64 is too little and 256 is too expensive. I paid the cost of the 256GB mini for my refurbished pro.
To be fair, he shows it happens on all 3 tablets.
Calm down.
This happens on all tablets, but seems to get more attention when it comes the iPad mini
thanks. no I know what the fuzz is about. if they implemented 120Hz the first place then it would have been this worse, and I will be interested more on the tablet.
It's not about the 120hz. Samsung Tab S7+ has 120hz but also has the effect, just that the jelly animation is smoother. lol
It is what it is
thank you
Planning to get ipad mini 6 and i think its cute!
Am I weird that I kind of like the jelly scroll? It looks more pleasant for my brain lol
I’m getting my iPad mini 6 today can’t wait, I’ll check out the nelly scroll I don’t think I’ll mind. I’ll be using it in bed like every day instead of my phone it’s such a good size ❤
What iPad do you have
Is this jelly scroll issue affect in gaming or editing???
No, only affected when you scroll
I can see it! Dang! Waiting for 120 Hz mini next year...
And you will still see it. 😂
Maybe people waiting for mini 7 why help it will be higher specs but for me all I want just jelly problems fix 😫
As un my used cade, i always scroll contents heavily , It is very noticeable. I am waiting for ipad mini 7. Hopefully it is fixed.
u see jelly effect when scroll.
when i scroll on my device, i saw lag.
Apple made a mistake for iPad mini’s display choice overall , its really expensive if I’m going for 256 - 5G yet it has outdated display tech and jelly problems
The story continues where it’s very unlucky for us where all manufacturers in the world agreed to not release a single powerful small/compact tablet , unless you want z folds ugly crease and can afford it or Lcd’s ugly blacks and jelly scrollings
That’s why I waited for the 120hz. I already got the ipad pro 12.9 2020, but its to big for some of my use case.
But I really enjoyed using it with the magic keyboard.. I can do my works almost everything on it except for coding..
@@kimballchoo7657 same here i got 12.9 2020 but i only use it on desk and barley take it out , Ipad mini would be the perfect device for university and daily use plus carrying it without weight or size issues

While I do notice it, is this even a big of an issue? Its not like people read text at break neck speeds.
It’s actually most noticeable when scrolling at normal speed, not break neck speed. And it’s more obvious in real life than what any UA-cam videos can accurately show
@@teohontech7141 It wont hamper anyone's watching or gaming experience. I doubt anyone will be constantly scrolling while reading unless they have OCD. This happened with One Plus before too and its not a big deal.
@@lolomo5787 Oneplus was a funny story, it had the exact same refresh rate and scan lining rate but the screen was reversed (refreshed bottom to top) so people noticed it because they were not used to seeing content move that way, content would compress when they scrolled down and stretch when they scrolled up, the opposite of all the other phones.
Having the content stretch when you move your finger up seems intuitive because you pull it up. when the opposite occurs it bugs your brain.
It’s not possible that „some“ iPad minis don’t have the issue. They’re all built equal and they all refresh their screens horizontally, not vertically
I just don't get why everyone is making such a huge deal out of this.
Cos it's a huge deal. It's expensive they should at least nail a simple scrolling
Why do i kinda like it
How about the the iPad Pro? Does it obvious too? This might be the reason that I choose iPad Pro than the iPad mini. Thanks for your review.
Effect is not obvious on iPad Pro. That's why I did not show the iPad Pro in this video because there's nothing to show.

Apple has decided to go with cheaper screen on the mini 6. I'm waiting for something call iPad mini pro, LOL...
Received mine today, definitely cheaper screen, its quite blurry and text tiny in most apps and they are really hard to read.
FYI mini has the highest PPI in all the iPads ! 😅
I updated to the latest ipados 15.1 (19B5052f) build today, looks like some of the size issue has been resolved. Also, under accessibility settings, there is a “per app” setting to make the fonts larger. So the good news is it’s software related.
@@rezapyoutube - i should been clearer, my problem is not aboit PPI, it’s related to default font size, display quality, general display brightness/contrast that was overblowing the white fonts in apps and home screen.
It's not "cheap", it just has to do with the orientation of the refresher, other than that it has the same IPS display as the Air 4 and 9th(although that is not laminated). You can notice the same thing on an Air 4 in landscape orientation.
Don't go looking for it because it's like opening the 3rd eye! Once you see it, you cannot unsee it after that 🤣
Haha 😂
Pandora’s box
I played with the Mini 6 at Best Buy and the jelly scrolling effect was obvious and bothersome as was the scaling on the home screen. $499.00 for a paltry 64gb and another $59.00 for a flimsy cover and over $100.00 for the pencil. Typical Apple rip off . My Samsung S7 doesn't have the jelly scrolling effect problem.
And what sucks is that Android has no compact tablet to compete.
@@maxbrennock1003 I have a feeling Samsung will come up with premium 8" tablet soon. They usually make products that go head to head with Apple. I don't need flagship CPU. I want oled screen, 6 gb+, and any 7xx chips is good enough. I almost pre order 256gb mini 6.
@@retromoogle there’s nothing H2H for the iPad Pro. The s7 doesn’t come close.
@@retromoogle what I'm looking for is longevity of the device, how long it will be supported through official channels, sadly there is no alternative in Android camp right now and Samsung devices are not going to be launched till next year and even they only have 3 year support, after comparing a lot I came to conclusion at this price, this is the best I can get where I can take notes (my main use case) and not compromise much on hardware. This screen defect is really bothering me right now, I'll wait and watch what Apple will do to solve this

Wait is this an issue?, Dude this so cool
Turn the Mini 6 upside down in portrait mode to see if it's less wobbly.
It’s not. The wavy pattern will just be reversed.
Can you compare ipad mini 5 with ipad mini 6 please?
