i love the fact that james go out his way, research all this stuff, throw all his personal opinions out the way and bring new ones all together, just for us! He could have passed this opportunity up, but thanks james, for not.
You know, I recall in Power Rangers RPM they actually explained that the reason teenagers were needed was because the powers and morphing could be extremely hard on the body. The person using the power needed to be focused, young, fit, and healthy or it could destroy them. Thinking about it that way, it makes sense they can't morph immediately, and they had to slowly allow themselves to come into their powers so they wouldn't simply die when they finally did morph. Just a thought.
bahamutkod "teenagers with attitudes" -gets five 4.0 honor roll kids who do community service every weekend and just so happen to be into gymnastics and martial arts that's why i liked how the characters in the movie are the bad kids and outcasts
Ok, but Marines, who undergo HEAVY training fit every single category. They're healthy, fit and most are still young. Plus they have combat experience.
It's so horrible that main iconic themes are largely ignored these days, instead we get generic stuff. Why are they so afraid of theme songs jeez...just throw the whole thing in, not just a snippet.
Apart from possible licensing issues with composers (depending on the project, given it's not like it's not ALL omissions are conveniently due to the same reason), they probably want to establish new musical identities for their universes. In a way, it's kind of thematically inconsistent to have their composers go through the hard work of establishing a new main leitmotif, only to go and utilizing an older version here and there, clashing with the new material established for them. It really depends on whether these things can be appropriately incorporated or not. With Power Rangers, the original theme is a major overarching song appearing numerous times within the franchise, so it seems fitting that they wound up referencing it a bit, but it's understandable why certain other adaptations may omit their songs, be it due to tonal or stylistic inconsistencies.
Amusingly, I'm not actually fond of Zimmer's work for the Nolan Batman films. I'm obviously all for changing it up, since it was a new universe, but Zimmer's scoring for the past ten years actually falls into that trend of ambient and minimalism. The only difference is he utilizes some power anthems and such for action sequences, but they don't really save those scores for me. Even Batman's own theme actually gets lost in the mix there for a lot of people. Most believe the Bat Tumbler action cue (reused a lot in later films for general action sequences) is his motif, when in actuality, it's a somewhat simple two note leitmotif (a most notable example of its usage is during the climb out of the pit in the third one, or after he defeated Ra's Al Ghul and shown to have survived). I did like the James Newton Howard side of it, though. Although it was bizarre how the Wayne family material from Begins suddenly became Harvey Dent-related music in the sequel.
I'll respect your taste in music, but largely Zimmer's score does conjure up TDK when you hear it and same cannot be said for other movies in general. It almost seems like score is written scene by scene without a recognizable base for the movie, do you know what I mean. Regardless of however you classify Zimmer's work, you can still recognize it and associate it with Batman no matter its usage, that's my point: the unique sound. If you are creating a new universe then you should create identifiable sound to go with it instead creating another generic score.
new identities? Remakes? Mother fuckers PLEAZE the theme song is BASED around the words MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS. I want to hear that damn song, you hollywood fucksticks.
I think not making the bully Bulk and Skull was a great move. In the show Bulk and Skull eventually became lovable goofs and fan favorites. But this bully was 100% a douche and that was the point of him. No need to ruin Bulk and Skull when they could save them for future movies.
The song is a good point. One thing about the shows in the 90s; if it had a catchy uplifting themesong, it was almost guaranteed to be a hit among kids.... M.A.S.K, Silverhawks, Galaxy Rangers.. it just goes to show just how important a theme song was and still is. And Power Rangers.. omg, there is a reason why its still ingrained in our minds today and I'm willing to bet that the theme song had a lot to do with it. As soon you heard it, it was like "YEAH! Power Rangers!!! ITS MORPHIN TIME!!"... it just grabbed you by your balls and lifted you up, got you all excited.
+Your Little Pwny You're absolutely right ^^ my bad. But the concept is still valid. :) Theme songs did so much to make or break a show back then, both in the 80s and the 90s. Today, many shows chose to not even show a title screen. :O
To be fair, James has been looking into all things Power Rangers recently, I am sure he'll have to check that one out as well, now that he knows it exists... XD
Yeah. Mike should watch that, if he hasn't. I'll say, actually, that when that thing already exists, there is less of a reason for this movie to have that much cheese. Would it have be cool? Sure! But it's not something that hurts it, I think. SPD, too, was not all that cheesy. It had its moments, but overall it seemed kind of serious across the episodes. And it was rad. I do think, though, that they could have had monsters that looked kind of ridiculous in the movie. More ridiculous than they already do. And have many diverse designs for them.
because Hollywood hates Ron Wasserman for some reason, he must not be a occultist or something, i don't know. Every time they shun this dude even though the fans want him.
Yeah, I'm not really sure why they don't like him. Then again, the industry routinely portrays Native Americans as a mysterious group of people with magical powers, so I don't know exactly how credible I consider it. But whatever, at least the theme song is in there, and it's used in a pretty good spot.

Power Rangers Zeo, episode 23, titled "It Came from Angel Grove". It has the potential to be your favorite episode, or possibly your most hated. It's pretty much Power Rangers meets Universal monsters. Check it out.
Glad it didn't become to dark, cause that was what I was afraid of is that they would have gone way to overboard with the dark tone like what Fant4stic did (and we know how that turned out), glad their was still a fun factor to it, without that going to far in the spectrum.
Well, a ranger did get killed of in the season Power rangers Lost Galaxy in the real show. (Granted she was resurrected in the last episode but for half the show she was D-E-A-D.)
I keep hearing people comment on Amy Jo Johnson's good looks but nothing on the late Thùy Trang (the original Trini). Was she that ordinary to the average viewer? No judgement, just honest curiosity.
It may be that she was ordinary and that is PRECISELY why people liked her so much. I recently read about how "average faces" oh women have a much higher rate of sexual attraction because, to put it bluntly in layman's terms, "the difference between asking out a supermodel and asking out a normal girl is that you feel like you have a chance with the normal girl." While this isn't intrinsically true globally, it's a reportedly noticeable statistic.
As a character, Trini just didn't stand out as much against the rest. She was a bit of a shy girl, and Thuy Trang may have played that role a bit too well. She tended to blend into the background whenever the focus of the story wasn't on her.
This is one of the only reviews I wanted to watch! I'm glad you both have the same opinion as me. It was wonderful fan service, and also made it enjoyable for the new generation. I haven't felt this happy coming out of the theatre in a while. It made me feel like a kid again! Ayy ayy ayy ayy ayy! Go Go Power Rangers!

Mike plays so well off of James. Mike knows that James is a master at scripted dialogue or thoughts, but spontaneous discussions are what makes James stutter and pause. Mike fixes that by asking easy leading questions
Fun Fact: The theme song they used for that segment in the movie was actually the movie version of the theme song from 1995. Also "I got the Power" was iconic because that song was ALSO in the MMPR Movie in 1995.
Am I the only one that thinks the designs of the zords, costumes etc etc. Just look super convoluted? Like TOO much of a detailed/cluttered/busy design?
I loved the movie, but I agree. The guys kinda did say that though, but not about the uniforms, which are what bugged me the most. Maybe I miss the girls’ mini skirts...
James: "As much as I wanted to hear more of that song, I personally have heard enough of that song lately." Mike: "You really more of that song?" James: "... Yeah. I do." I agree! It's just so freaking metal!!!
Django Unchained had the credits at the beginning it was an amazing touch I think. Guys, I love your reviews, James you're so professional, you catch those little details that everyone seem to miss. Thank you so much, great video.
I felt a little bit of the cheese there with Rita eating Doughnuts as Goldar (weakest part of the film for me) dug up the Zeo crystal, and the megazord dancing there were a few other small scenes but I'm glad it's not as cheesey as the original but not trying to be super dark and edgey but a nice balance between the two
The theme song is the version from the 1995 movie. At the end of the credits it says "Go Go Power Rangers, courtesy 20th Century Fox" in the songs used in the film.
I agree with much of what was said; however, I wanted to see them fight in the suits more. There was BARELY any of that. They spent less than a minute fighting the putties and then went to the zords and most of the costume was out of shot and the masks were open so you could see the actors' faces. Between the prologue and the rest of the movie, I feel the suits got very little screen time. I mean, yeah, they needed that character bonding, but I think they could have done that with the Power Rangers able to morph, but then the need to come together as a team comes into forming the Megazord. You'd lose the motivation of Zordon, but I don't feel that was entirely necessary.
This movie is made for the FANS, for us who were kids during the 90s, and when we played outside, each having a character! While watching it I wanted to become a Power Ranger again, brought so many memories back. Awesome movie, everything spot on!
I'm 40 years old. By the time the 'Power Rangers' got popular was back when I just started college and it was just some kid's show with some 'Godzilla' elements to it. Never seen it. I finally saw this movie and OMG!!!! It's rare to find a fun movie where you really care for the characters. This is a MUST see if you're an old shit like me that is sick of Hollywood, likes sci-fi and fun characters, and want to watch a fun movie. This, along with 'Guardian's of the Galaxy Vol. 2' are so worth seeing when you get the chance. I think this 'Power Rangers' film deserves a sequel.
Pretty sure "I Got The Power" plays in the OG MMPR movie, so I'm okay with it. Also I don't think the use of "Go Go Power Rangers" is an afterthought because the reenact the Zord entrance sequence from the OG series too!
You're so right James :D Batman intro credits with the theme song really gets you ready to watch the movie. This works only for good movies tho, maybe that is the reason the credits are left to the end these days. haha!
Western directors are not familiar with certain tropes used when directing sentai shows that is why this movie lacked the essential element familiar to the fans of Power Rangers/Super Sentai.
Love how nervous James got when Mike mentioned how good the actresses looked. They're 20 and 24. That's not that young... Only young teens are allowed to find 24 year olds attractive?
Better than BVS! Sorry, that's coming from someone who loved Man of Steel. It had a fucking story without being overly dark. It was fantastic in my opinion.
They totally nailed my feelings about the movie. Was it amazing? No, but It was way better than I could have imagined it would be. And like Mike, I'm actually excited or a sequel.
the western world refuses to put sanctions on sponsors of terrorism because war = profit, and they have joined forces with saudi arabia to conquer the middle east by displacing the populations of those countries into the western world terrorism, beating women, and being a slave are now "gangta" and "hip" thats why oh and 9/11 was the u.s. gov initiating itself as a willing participant for not preventing it
Reviewers don't like this movie because it didn't fit into their narrow concept of what the movie should have been. It didn't go full camp, and it didn't go full dark. It simply took the MMPR series and expanded and improved upon it. And reviewers are rejecting it on these grounds. Each negative review contradicts the last, unable to agree upon what makes the film bad. Most YT reviewers that I trust will give very positive reviews of the film and then end off with a 6/10 or 7/10. It's kind of bullshit.
I really enjoyed the movie overall when I went and watched it yesterday (and that says a lot coming from a Super Sentai purist like me). I love the renewed approach of some of the elements from the 1993 show like how it now has a more serious take on teenager dramas, how the movie took time for character development, how realistic the Rangers reacted when they realized they have superpowers, how crazy the new Rita is, how the Rangers needed time to get used to piloting the Zords, and how you can follow the fight scenes clearly without looking like a metalic-clunky mess like most of the Transformers movies. My only nitpick on the movie was, like Mike said, how Zordon kinda have this jerk and selfish side in him (which is understandable for a Brian Cranston character) and how they didn't really cover enough about his desire to use the Rangers' powers to literally resurrect himself. I know it's meant to be a plot device for him to redeem himself later in the film, but I wished they would work the conflict a bit better. Other than that, I also wished we actually get to see the physical formation of the Megazord. The scene where it raised up from the pit was so epic, but I'd love to see how the movie takes their own approach on depicting a Japanese Super Robot "Gattai" sequence, instead of just magically and literally fused themselves with the power of Friendship.
my big quiestion was why they decided to make the mega zord function mor like Voltron rather than everyone go to a large cockpit in the chest like in the show...
Damn people need to take nostalgia out of their asses. As a MMPR fan and Power Rangers in general, the movie was quite fun and just enjoyable as a whole. Yes the 'look we are teens, oh no we've got powers now' was a bit too long but it's a goddamn reboot movie in 2017. What did you expect. Just have fun for once in a while, people. Fuck.
MrCactaki177 I don't have much nostalgia for mmpr and I haven't seen the movie yet... I have a low opinion of mmpr but the review gives me some hope for it... though I will say one thing they should have kept is the general structure of the megazord sabertooth and triceratops legs Trex body mastadon legs and ptera chest
MrCactaki177 I dont know...i think we all have our own opinions about what we wanna see from a movie when based on our childhood. I see what your saying about Nostalgia but i still feel people can have there own opnion with out this..."Stuck in the 90s" type label thats gets thrown around.
Javier Molina Yeah but in the newer seasons they still use the practical effects and stock footage formula like in the original, what's this films excuse?
and his spirit animal would be the Megazord itself. Having Chuck within it causes massive testosterone boost giving Megazord mighty metallic beard, increased hip flexibility and heavy low hanging wrecking balls.
Lol literally almost everyone who doubted the Power Rangers movie came out saying they liked the movie. Honestly, it took me by surprise how much I enjoyed PR. Money well spent, hopefully they continue to make part 2 😎
it would be amazing if Saban made power Rangers rpm into a r rated movie, it would be like mad max + transformers + terminater. I would be amazing, so far power Rangers rpm is the most "realistic" in the series which would make it easier to write for.
How can it be, if she was a teenager during the original show? She shouldn't be older than 42. Unless... *Checks out Wikipedia* So apparently Kimberly wasn't jailbait at all.
12:30 That´s exactly why I won´t watch the movie, how could they f*** up one of the most important element of the show?! instead they put a generic rap song that is irrelevant and has 0 transcendence... WTF!
That´s an awesome soundtrack, and it´s 22 years old. Today we got KANYE..... what could be more metal?! hahahhahah. I feel kind of bad for someone who never heard of power rangers... to hear kanye... lol
EpicZEVEN The 95 movie had a shitload of random irrelevant licensed songs in it after the sky dive and roller skating, so this basically only having Kanye as a random throwaway is a major step up.
Mike really pinned down what I liked about the Power Rangers as a kid: Big crazy monsters and Amy Jo Johnson.
Firevine Yay he literally pinned you on the comments
he pinned down this comment too

I cannot believe she still looks as good as in the 90s

A lot better than some reviewer who tried to review the power rangers *cough*Nostalgia Critic*Cough*
and he even took the opportunity to shoot an AVGN episode. James sure seems like he likes to keep himself busy, gotta give him props for that.

RPM explained pretty much everything. even why shit keeps exploding around the Rangers. xP
The part where they played the theme song had me squealing like a 10-year-old in the middle of the theater
Bud who saw it in theaters said that the audience lost their minds and started cheering. Wish I coulda been there.

Blue ranger: Blue power!

Average Man I quite liked it but I get what you mean.
Average Man That's how I feel about DC's costume design after 2011.
I loved the movie, but I agree. The guys kinda did say that though, but not about the uniforms, which are what bugged me the most. Maybe I miss the girls’ mini skirts...
I really liked the designs for the movie, even though I have a major soft spot for the originals
James: "As much as I wanted to hear more of that song, I personally have heard enough of that song lately."
Mike: "You really more of that song?"
James: "... Yeah. I do."
I agree! It's just so freaking metal!!!
18:27 The thing you're talking about is called a pin-screen
Django Unchained had the credits at the beginning it was an amazing touch I think. Guys, I love your reviews, James you're so professional, you catch those little details that everyone seem to miss. Thank you so much, great video.
I felt a little bit of the cheese there with Rita eating Doughnuts as Goldar (weakest part of the film for me) dug up the Zeo crystal, and the megazord dancing there were a few other small scenes but I'm glad it's not as cheesey as the original but not trying to be super dark and edgey but a nice balance between the two
The theme song is the version from the 1995 movie. At the end of the credits it says "Go Go Power Rangers, courtesy 20th Century Fox" in the songs used in the film.
that moment you realize this is just what happens if the Breakfast Club got superpowers
Anyone else notice that JDF and Amy Jo were in the movie?
Power Rangers delivered on what every other nostalgia-ridden reboot TV show/movie failed to.
and considering how cheesy and low budget the TV series was, that's pretty sad.
I think you missed the part were Tommy and Kimberly (the original actors of course) made a cameo. nice little Easter egg
"It was pretty good."
I'm shocked. thanks for video boys
My nephew and I used to watch the T.V series in the 90s whenever I would babysit him & his little buddies.
The "I got the power" soundtrack was put in because it was in the end of MMPR movie as well
There's no opening credits anymore because there are SO MANY DAMN PREVIEWS and we just want to get to the movie.
Can it really be called Power Rangers without Bulk and Skull?
ARX78 is bulk and skull in the movie?
nope
They are replaced by teenage girls. They are loosely based on the characters.
I met Bulk & Skull! I told them I used to laugh at them as a kid. Bulk thought my Darth Vegeta costume was hilarious & is a cutup like his character.
bulk and skull my favorite 30 something year old highschoolers
I feel the idea of Megazord is not only from original Megazord, but also from the Falcon Ninja Zord in the 1995 power ranger Movie
Might Morphin Breakfast Club. Instead of the MMPR theme, I expected Simple Minds. I liked the film, though.
James, thanks for working hard on AVGN all these years. I've missed it, please make more when you have the time!
look out Rita we're not backing down we're the POWER RANGERS!
Amy Jo Johnston is actually in this movie as a cameo appearance.
I love this channel. James and Mike, you guys are great to watch. Thank you for years of great content.
Cant Wait to see it on a weekday with no crowd
NAZTALGIC lucky you
This is a movie you must see with a crowd. A crowd full of Power Ranger fans
The MMPR theme was from the 1995 MMPR movie but they trimmed it so you couldn't hear the mighty morphin power rangers part.
The look of Zordon actually was used in a recent movie, James. Man of Steel. The Krypton technology. And it's corny in that to, lol.
This works only for good movies tho, maybe that is the reason the credits are left to the end these days. haha!
Note about the theme song: it's actually the theme they used in the 1995 movie.
Western directors are not familiar with certain tropes used when directing sentai shows that is why this movie lacked the essential element familiar to the fans of Power Rangers/Super Sentai.
epic two sided fights, and insane displays of power and abillity. I bet they don't even get hit while fighting in unless they have to lose.
Love how nervous James got when Mike mentioned how good the actresses looked. They're 20 and 24. That's not that young... Only young teens are allowed to find 24 year olds attractive?
character development felt very breakfast club-ish in my opinion
Advice for a sequel. Make sure you keep the iconic theme song in the movie. That's the most vital part of the movie
I really liked at the end where they did a shout out to the fact that the yellow ranger was a guy from the super sentai fights
"yea, I do."
great line to go out on, that song never gets old.
Do you know, that actress who portrayed Kimberly has a cameo in the movie?
Arturs Dāvids so does tommy
yup
with their colour.
Arturs Dāvids where
Yep. She's with Tommy too.... So I guess everything worked out between them.
This is the best level headed review I've seen, thanks guys! Really like your honest no bullshit assessments. 👍🏻😄
"Make my monster grow" -Mike
At the end, "Do you really want to hear MORE of that song? 'Laughs' YEAH I DO." ends abruptly. Lol
6:27 "Make my monster grow!" said Mike Matei's mighty morphin' mastodon megazock.
Everyone in the theater cheered and applaud when the theme song played! It was so awesome!
GO GO POWER RANGERS for life!
i can't believe they didn't mention Bryan Cranston!
Godzilla and Kong both had intro credits and do it greatly
why did i get a 5 second commercial of the airplane hitting the world trade center ?! who the fuck made that commercial . ?!
The Zeppelin 1801 UA-cam adverts are very strange from time to time....
the western world refuses to put sanctions on sponsors of terrorism because war = profit, and they have joined forces with saudi arabia to conquer the middle east by displacing the populations of those countries into the western world
terrorism, beating women, and being a slave are now "gangta" and "hip"
thats why
oh and 9/11 was the u.s. gov initiating itself as a willing participant for not preventing it
MlSHKlN are you done adjusting your tinfoil hat?
The government
The Zeppelin 1801 illuminati confirmed its probally mk ultra prep for a bad event to happen staged
The version of the theme song used in the 2017 film is actually the same one used in the 1995 film.
Or because it wasnt great. Im a huge pr fan and i get if you liked it. There are legitmate reasons not to like it tho, cuz i sure didnt.
@@doomchill I agree I thought it was bad
I loved it! XD
It felt like the Breakfast Club at the beginning, but then became more AWESOME! XD
my big quiestion was why they decided to make the mega zord function mor like Voltron rather than everyone go to a large cockpit in the chest like in the show...
they need to make a beetle borgs movie now
When it comes out im going to edit the original theme over the entire kanye song
MrCactaki177 plus some of the later seasons of power rangers are just better than MMPR. Dino Thunder, SPD, and RPM are some of my recommendations.
MrCactaki177 With that we've given other reboot people like Michael Bay a reason to make bad films just for money
Javier Molina Yeah but in the newer seasons they still use the practical effects and stock footage formula like in the original, what's this films excuse?
4:10 James has horror flashbacks to the AVGN movie.
I'm disappointed. I was hoping Chuck Norris would be in it - the mightiest ranger of them all.
and his spirit animal would be the Megazord itself. Having Chuck within it causes massive testosterone boost giving Megazord mighty metallic beard, increased hip flexibility and heavy low hanging wrecking balls.
I always wished they had the guitar solo when they combined and were coming out of the pit
I'm surprised no mention of the cameos at the end of the movie.
Kaiser499 in rugrats who voiced Angelina?
im aware it's old, but i'm sure kaiser is referring to amy jo and JDF.
Lol literally almost everyone who doubted the Power Rangers movie came out saying they liked the movie. Honestly, it took me by surprise how much I enjoyed PR. Money well spent, hopefully they continue to make part 2 😎
James looks fresh as fuck in this vid not gonna lie
Heard they're planning a six movie plan. I do hope the sequels (if any) lighten up just a tad.
the only thing I didn't like was the Kanye song they used for the big battle... other than that it was a good movie!
LonewolfSaichi Power Rangers needs a rockin' soundtrack.
it would be amazing if Saban made power Rangers rpm into a r rated movie, it would be like mad max + transformers + terminater. I would be amazing, so far power Rangers rpm is the most "realistic" in the series which would make it easier to write for.
Amy Jo Johnson is only 46 and hot
How can it be, if she was a teenager during the original show? She shouldn't be older than 42. Unless...
*Checks out Wikipedia*
So apparently Kimberly wasn't jailbait at all.
Good to know you guys liked this film. I'm a huge tokusatsu nerd so I'm looking forward to this.
12:30 That´s exactly why I won´t watch the movie, how could they f*** up one of the most important element of the show?! instead they put a generic rap song that is irrelevant and has 0 transcendence... WTF!
EpicZEVEN The original (95 film version) of the song is in the movie, at the best part in could be.
EpicZEVEN fuck you kanye is amazing
Honudes Gai Yeah, and it was during the climax... The Movie was still awesome, but they should have just kept using the power rangers theme.
The theme is the OG theme not nothing new. And I loved it!
Go go power rangers!
