They tried to give the Power Rangers a more serious villian with Lord Zedd but parents complained he was too scary so they toned him down. That's probably why they didnt make Ivan Ooze more threatening.

Yeah I remember the voice actor saying that in an interview. He looked like a bodybuilder under that suit and his voice and mannerisms were very intense the first 10 or so Episodes he was in from what I remember. I kinda liked both version of his character though as a kid.

I saw this movie when I was 10 years old in theaters after being a huge Power Rangers fans ever since seeing the pilot episode when it premiered on Fox. I freaking loved it at the time and I still remember that opening scene made me want to skydive so bad that I eventually did for a birthday when I turned 25. So I'll always have a special place in my heart for this movie if only for that scene because skydiving was one of the best experiences of my life. So glad you ended up doing a retrospective on this movie because I didn't think it was something that you'd end up covering.
Man there was nothing like seeing the premiere of the original Power Rangers pilot on Fox as a kid. Especially since I was already a HUGE Godzilla fan at the time and would rent whatever Godzilla movie Blockbuster would have when we would go until my parents got tired of it. All it took was seeing the Zords for the first time and I was immediately hooked. I mean let's be honest here all it took was hearing the Power Rangers theme for the first time as a kid to get you hooked. Still to this day that works as my daughter was immediately hooked on MMPR as soon as she heard that theme come on.

Ollie just to let you know, This movie is not in continuity with the show. When season 3 of the show started, they basically remade the movie, replaced Ivan Ooze with Rito Revolto, Rita's brother, replaced Dulcea with Ninjor, the Tengu Warriors became the Tenga, and instead of Ninjetti it was just Ninja.

I will always have a weird fascination with this movie. it's by no means good but I do respect how on a technical level effort was put in to make it feel like a legit film. If only the script was better to where it could be a been at least been on the scale of enjoyably bad instead of guilty pleasure you only watched due to personal nostalgia. But then again I say this as if power rangers was ever a good show. Granted Power Rangers in Space And Lost Galaxy are still classics.

I never did like Ivan Ooze much, but this was also after the completely neutered Lord Zedd in the TV series. A shame as he was legit menacing when he debuted.
I have to correct something early on here, where you imply that this movie was a continuation of the TV show - it wasn't. Turbo was (serving as the season premiere for the Turbo season), but the MMPR 1995 movie was out of continuity with the TV show.
The new stuff that got introduced in this movie (the ninjetti suits, the new Ninja Zords and the Tengu/Tengas) would appear in season 3 of the show, but were introduced differently.
Also, the practical suits and effects for the Ninja Megazord from Sentai footage looked so much better than the CGI here. It's actually funny.

@@_Only_Zuul According to what I have read online, the cast of MMPR made $60,000 per year. This was without any compensation for merchandising for the show, which was estimated to be worth about $1 billion. Due the contracts they had signed, they were not able to get a percentage of the merchandising at all. Plus, with none of the cast members had agents or lawyers looking out for them, since the show was their first acting job. The actors also never received any money from reruns of the episodes they appeared in either. With MMPR being their first acting job, none of the actors had agents or lawyers looking out for them either. Plus the shooting schedule was pretty hectic too, as the cast mentioned during their interviews on the complete series DVD from Shout Factory. They would film scenes for one episode, then change costumes to film scenes for a different episode in the span of one day. This was to accommodate the fact that the show aired episodes during the week as on Saturday Mornings.
These conditions are what caused Austin St. John, Walter Jones and Thuy Trang to leave the show during the second season, since attempts to get the show unionized failed. Austin St. John would return to the role of Jason Lee Scott in Power Rangers Zeo and the Turbo movie after Haim Saban found out that children watching the show missed his character. Walter Jones would go on to voice several of the monsters in the later seasons.

Ollie, thank you so much for covering this film. I was always interested to hear your thoughts on it even though it wasn’t as much a part of your adolescence as is was for me and others. It’s a guilty pleasure and is very flawed but it still a fun and enjoyable film. Though it would have been interesting to see if they’d gone with a darker, more serious “TMNT 1990” tone.

Ooze making contemporary pop culture jokes despite being locked away for centuries reminds me of Mario Van Peebles' Kane from Highlander III. He was buried in a cave for centuries, but he's talking with modern slang and contemporary humor. I was a bit old to be hooked on Power Rangers in the early 90's, but it caught my interest for a few seasons. I only saw the movie on VHS, but it was so odd that the movie isn't in proper canon with the series. The following season started up with a different telling of the Rangers getting their Ninjetti powers and new Zords. Very peculiar to make that major push to a theatrical feature, and then, negate it from continuity entirely. Some have said that this is due to some rights issues with 20th Century Fox going between TV and film, but this always struck me as strange.

How old were you if you were a year or two too old for Power Rangers? I was about 5 when I saw the movie in theaters. It was my favorite video to rent throughout the 90s besides the Batman movies. I even loved Dino Thunder, at 14 it was my guilty pleasure. I was still playing with my toys at 13/14 as well as playing video games. Kids grow up too fast these days. I'm 30 now and still watch new Power Rangers sometimes.

Re: the Zord fight in the film- in a bizarre move, one short abridged picture book version wound up using the a screencap of Mighty Shogan/Shogan Megazord (first introduced in the early eps of Kakuranger but introduced mid way during MMPR S3 with Kimberly's exit/Kat's beginnings) and its finishing move over the Ninja Zords presented in the film

there's a tiny mistake at the start when mentioning the show up of Adam, Rocky and Aisha, saying there we cut up to the movie timeline since unlike Turbo, that is part of the shows timeline the start of the turbo season expecting the public to have seeing the movie to understand the power change, the 95 movie is not part on the tv show cannon and considered an elseworld of alternate timeline (like the 2017 movie) since the series has it own history as for the ninja powers.

The simple dreams of being a young Power Rangers fan.

As a fan, I don want to point out that this is more like most Dragon Ball Z movies, where the story seems to follow from things in the show, but doesn't actually fit in continuity. It just matches where the show was at the time.
They basically redid the powerup given in the movie with a multi-episode arc that actually used footage from the Sentai.
Turbo, however, was entirely in continuity, with them even reusing the movie as episodes.
