Digging through the firmware 3.0 update, I was pleasantly surprised that, while they didn't add shutter angle, they did add 1/24, 1/48, and 1/96 shutter speeds in 23.98 fps, so at the VERY LEAST we now finally have true 90, 180, and 270 degree equivalent shutter speed now. Seems like a compromise for now until they figure their stuff out (I can't imagine that codebase is anything but a spaghetti code horror mess)

I think Sonys really need false color option. You could have it on external monitors, but if you are running lightweight with just factory LCD, its really bad to nail exposure.
Ah! The perfect videographer to ask… I’ll be shooting some theater scenes in NYC and I’m trying to see IF I can get by with a Sony FX3 given that the lighting can be highly controlled… It’s not only is it about the higher rental cost of the the FX6 or Komodo ecosystem… but the size of the files written out demanding (10?) more NAS storage for editing… The deciding factor may just be that the final product is only intended for smart phones or tablet… maybe a laptop? (There’s also some question about shooting under the theaters tungsten lights or (and?) my Aputure LEDS…)
RAW is split into 2: Uncompressed and compressed ProRes RAW, just like RED’s R3D format are compressed Normal ProRes, is just a compressed video format, but a very efficient one in terms of compression, quality and performance. That’s why it’s the preferred to edit and master with.
@@THEDPJOURNEY hey thanks!!! So I guess, there is no point in shooting, ProRess Raw then? better shoot Proress? (I thought ProRess RAW had more info so the better choice...)
Very informative video, thanks for the effort! I use the timecode adapter and have only noticed big differences so far when the timecode generator is no longer connected and the internal clock continues to run - but I will keep an eye on this. You talked about a video that is exactly about the timecode running apart... can you link it to me? And one thing I would like to briefly note: in RAW the imagearea is not larger. It only looks like it if you have the distortion compensation active, because then it is slightly cropped on the internal recording to compensate for the distortion, which logically does not happen in the RAW feed. If the function is deactivated, then the image section is identical. The internal UHD recording is always downsampled down from the 4.2K.
@@davidcmpeterson Indeed, it is the best option to keep the timecode generator consistently connected. However, in certain circumstances, it may not necessarily be required. I have recently conducted an extensive comparative test with various devices. The findings were filled with numerous intriguing and unexpected results, accompanied by the reassuring realization that the adapter functions flawlessly. Even during a continuous recording exceeding 8 hours with the adapter, all Sony cameras performed impeccably, remaining OnPoint. However, caution must be exercised when the timecode generator is not connected, as well as in certain recording modes such as the slow and quick mode. ua-cam.com/video/Cn2XG8fxhcU/v-deo.html
@@deadendboredom you never want to discover a scenario (due to weather, or battery changes, or setting changes, or whatever) that means timecode isn't in sync and all it would have taken to simply avoid this major problem if you'd just done the normal thing of keeping a timecode box on it!
@@davidcmpeterson You're absolutely right, one wouldn't want such a scenario to occur. However, it's good to know how a device behaves in an exceptional situation. Perhaps the port for the TC is occupied by another device or a vertical video needs to be recorded where the port side is at the bottom and thus concealed. Just like a pilot who wouldn't want to encounter a scenario where an engine fails... But the more they know about the aircraft and exceptional situations, the better they can handle it.
Very useful to be aware of the limitations. Still, no way I'd pick a Panasonic camera again. The missing or limited features of this camera are far outweighed by the fantastic functionality the camera has.
I accidentally clicked my shutter wheel the other day while filming a doc and noticed 1/48 is now in the camera. I was shooting 1/50 like I always have because I thought that’s all that was available. So I think that’s new and they didn’t announce it, or it was there all along and I just never knew. 🤷♂️
Is the resolution of the 4K DCI mode actually 4,096 x 2,160 or it just upscaling the UHD resolution into a bigger container? I thought the sensor was only 3,840 by 2,160.
Most dissapointing was the lack of Open Gate. But thanks for pointing out the 3:2 sensor which is shorter than the 4:3 which I believe is available on the new Panasonic Cams, correct?
the only real issue I have with the fx3, is that the noise reduction can't be turned off, id love to record internally, but it looks worse than the fx6 with the same sensor due to this noise reduction. therefore every time I use this camera I use proresraw
So I have All Sony/Zuess lens all full frame, should I just get the FX30 and use the crop on the FX30 sensor?? I want to get into making music videos, but I need a camera thats excellent for indoor iso ranges. or should I buy the a7s111
Well explained Sherif.Thank for this another valuable video. Sony cameras are good based on different situations but the point is why they include basic cinema features afterwards. Why didn't basic features available from day one of camera purchase. If it's a cinema camera Sony must understand that it should behave like cinema cameras from day one to give value of purchase. If they took another few months or a year to include shutter angle or other cinema features and another company releases a new cinema body till that time .Then Sony will be releasing another body and will be in competition mode but will not include another firmware. Chances are less as seen with A7SIII totally ignored. From long I'm waiting for a detailed video from you Sir for Panasonic S5MII and now they have a new S5MIIx model available. If possible please make a video for S5MIIx model if it's available with you.Thank you in advance.
Honestly, I don't know many folks active in the feature film production scene that use the term 'cinema camera'. Its really just become marketing bloat for campaigns and youtube now. Cameras are generally identified by their function rather than where the work is supposed to be distributed- either crewed, solo op, pov, crash etc. The reality is that many folk have been steered to think that buying certain cameras mean they are suddenly making 'films', but few have ever done the work needed to create one for theatrical release. Theres a lot of arbitration of significance that just ends up being a distraction from the real craft.
@@Yupthereitism the bmpcc4k and 6k have a more filmic image than the Sony with better highlight roll off. Softer yes but less digital and nicer skin tones too.
@@Shuttterbugg not a lot. It does 10bit, has native sdi and xlr, has no stabilisation, has dci, open gate and a lot of other nice features. It's an older camera, sure, but holds its own against newer cameras. Especially against this particular one.
I second the GH6 thing. Was destined to be the PERFECT camera until I discovered the same issue in 40% of my footage. Returned it straight away, I think that shipping a camera with flaws like that is less forgiveable than no shutter angle lol
@@THEDPJOURNEYWow, You are correct. it turns out I have been using a 128 v60 card all along. I have not missed the V90 since I dont use intra modes on the FX30. Interesting. Thanks
I’ve been using timecode since it was released in last firmware upgrade. It drifts quite a bit over the course of the day so I just jam sync every 60 minutes.
The problem I have with a lot of these comments (by people who don't own the camera) is that you still cant forget the is still in many ways way more practical and affordable cinema option for a commercial/ wedding filmmaker like myself and many others who don't need the production controls and layout of other cinema cameras. Lets not ignore that "The Creator" (a full Hollywood production) used FX3 to shoot the entire film, say what you will about the slow rollout cinema of features that Sony is making available with firmware updates, the camera's image is still beautiful and much better than almost all Blackmagic's offerings.
You know what else shot a Hollywood movie? The iPhone 5s. Does this mean it’s as good as FX3? Does it mean the iPhone is a great choice for film production. People keep using this example complete out of context and without understanding the point of what I’m mentioning here. I’ll leave it at that
Perhaps it's Sony's version of a cripple hammer and want you to buy the FX6 or the FX9, but considering Panasonic is giving us these features without even being a cinema camera and at half the price. It makes sense to get the Panasonic, I really love my FX3, I really think that the rolling shutter is key in my work. Hence, I have to stick with Sony, if not, I would gladly get the Panasonic instead. Though I must say, I'm excited at what Sony will give us on the FX3 Mark II, hope they will come out with it soon. Sucks to know that my friend's ZV-E1 backup casual shooting camera has more features than my FX3. Just my 2 cents.
Yeah but the fx6 and fx9 have hardware making it worth to buy outside of shooting modes. The larger bodies for rigging and the internal NDs being a huge one.
Just use a sigma fp, uses the same sensor and doesn’t have the problems here if filming 24p. Can’t monitor in log to check highlight clipping unless using the atomos monitor, though.
I still don’t understand why they don’t make a attentive UI for external display (smaller text and uses full 16:9 resolution instead of just outputting the 3:2 image and make it enable to output guideline, zebras and peaking to external display.
They do have the same sensor, but they are different in many ways, form factor, FX3 has mounting points on the body, some FX3 features don’t exist in the a7sIII
The anamorphic thing is really not required. The camera can’t do open gate so anamorphic is just ridiculous on this camera anyway. Makes no sense to use anamorphic on a cam that doesn’t do open gate.
What a great looking video and very informative! Congrats! And for firmware, at least sony do something with FX3 but completely silent for same features for a7SIII, its a very sad, as a7sIII have same hardware and for all was almost total clone of FX3. And regardless price for a7sIII for 4200$ (in my country) and total video oriented camera it such a bad way to handle this camera.
Some says Sony intentionally give such updates so these existing cameras don't perform good anymore so they can launch their new cameras. And people will buy new ones and the cycle goes on and on ! It's one of their strategies to stay in the business.
Breathing compensation is really only possible with zoom lenses, as you know cropping is not the same as changing the focal length. Many B4 lenses can do that but IMO it looks more ugly than the breathing.
Sony is fully aware of all that nonsense and will always cripple their cameras in one or the other way. If they didn't they wouldn't be able to sell newer models which will have new features to make us upgrade (we all suffer from GAS) but also frustrate as as feature A, B or C is missing although it could be fixed with an easy firmware update. Everything has method. Believing anything else is naive.
@@POVwithRC That's what I said. Apart from that most people should care less about specs and just use whatever they feel most comfortable with. Skills always beat specs.

Ah! The perfect videographer to ask…
I’ll be shooting some theater scenes in NYC and I’m trying to see IF I can get by with a Sony FX3 given that the lighting can be highly controlled…
It’s not only is it about the higher rental cost of the the FX6 or Komodo ecosystem… but the size of the files written out demanding (10?) more NAS storage for editing…
The deciding factor may just be that the final product is only intended for smart phones or tablet… maybe a laptop?
(There’s also some question about shooting under the theaters tungsten lights or (and?) my Aputure LEDS…)
Always the truth, always the facts
Doing my best to keep it that way. Thanks for your support
Fun fact that quirk about the 24p only being available in DCI 4K is true for the FX6 as well.
OMG! Sony at its best. Thanks for that info
Brilliant video! Should I but the A7siii or wait...
buy cuz the a7s4 will be launch next year
Would you recommend the fx3 as a first cinema camera? or are there other better options?
Excellent explanation! clear and concise!!! Question 🤔 what is the difference between "ProRess- ProRess RAW & regular Raw ? thanks! cheers!
Regular RAW is patented by RED and is not allowed to be internal in any camera besides their own.
RAW is split into 2:
Uncompressed and compressed
ProRes RAW, just like RED’s R3D format are compressed
Normal ProRes, is just a compressed video format, but a very efficient one in terms of compression, quality and performance. That’s why it’s the preferred to edit and master with.
@@THEDPJOURNEY hey thanks!!! So I guess, there is no point in shooting, ProRess Raw then? better shoot Proress? (I thought ProRess RAW had more info so the better choice...)
ProRes raw has many awesome features, I suggest you watch the episodes about raw I pointed out, they’ll answer all your questions
@@THEDPJOURNEY thanks I will!
Love it bro💪🏾 Have you played with using tungsten lighting more for black skin? That warmer look usually helps the skin to glow!
I have an A7siii as main cam and Fx30 as B cam.... I really wish the A7siii would get these updates lol...
That's one of my doubts with Sony these days. They give the Fx camera's plenty of updates but the A7S3 just gets left out for no reason.
You must always keep the timecode generator connected to the camera at all times

But the more they know about the aircraft and exceptional situations, the better they can handle it.
so really know way to record true 24p prores on the fx3? any workarounds? maybe in post?
Not that I’m aware of no
Very useful to be aware of the limitations. Still, no way I'd pick a Panasonic camera again. The missing or limited features of this camera are far outweighed by the fantastic functionality the camera has.
it's great camera, you can't find a camera that fits everyone's needs afterall, there will always be a catch
Nice video! We need s5iix video as well !
Correct
@@THEDPJOURNEY which other full-frame cameras offer 4:3 open gate? I don't know of any (except for MFT cameras) and 3:2 is the traditional 35mm size
the only real issue I have with the fx3, is that the noise reduction can't be turned off, id love to record internally, but it looks worse than the fx6 with the same sensor due to this noise reduction. therefore every time I use this camera I use proresraw
💯💯
Great Video! Sony just sucks in Community Support.
So I have All Sony/Zuess lens all full frame, should I just get the FX30 and use the crop on the FX30 sensor?? I want to get into making music videos, but I need a camera thats excellent for indoor iso ranges. or should I buy the a7s111
As of today May 15, 2023, The FX9 does NOT have lens breathing compensation. And it is a frustration when comparing to the cheaper fx cameras.
If possible please make a video for S5MIIx model if it's available with you.Thank you in advance.
such detailed ???? flabbergasting video.. New sub here..
Thanks for the sub! Glad to have you, Welcome aboard!
A very happy panasonic user here has a very big smile on his face as panasonic has everything sony is missing😁😁😁
Theres a lot of arbitration of significance that just ends up being a distraction from the real craft.
couldn’t agree more
wish you make a video about panasonic lumix s5 mark 2, thanks a lot
It's kind of amazing how relevant the gh4 still is. Competing with sony's latest prosumer cameras. Maybe sony'll catch up to the bmpcc4k one day.
Sonys been focused on video quality
@@Yupthereitism the bmpcc4k and 6k have a more filmic image than the Sony with better highlight roll off. Softer yes but less digital and nicer skin tones too.
Gh5 maybe but the gh4 lacks s9 much compared to now
@@Shuttterbugg not a lot. It does 10bit, has native sdi and xlr, has no stabilisation, has dci, open gate and a lot of other nice features. It's an older camera, sure, but holds its own against newer cameras. Especially against this particular one.
This is the lowest IQ comment I’ve seen on this channel.
11:40. scaling by 0.99 will introduce artifacts. you're better off cropping to get 1:1 pixel mapping.
I was tossing up changing to Sony from Panasonic but the GH6 is just so cinematic centric it was a no brainer
But as I got the GH6, I discovered it has a major streaking issue with its sensor that would ruin your shots. I have an episode about it. Check it out
I second the GH6 thing. Was destined to be the PERFECT camera until I discovered the same issue in 40% of my footage. Returned it straight away, I think that shipping a camera with flaws like that is less forgiveable than no shutter angle lol
@@THEDPJOURNEY how abot the s5iix?
as for shutter angle. if the data structures weren't designed for it. implementing it will be convoluted.
BTW 4k DCI can only be recorded in CFExpress A cards and V90, but you can use the ninja if you don’t have any.
No I recorded it on SD card with no issues
@@THEDPJOURNEYWow, You are correct. it turns out I have been using a 128 v60 card all along. I have not missed the V90 since I dont use intra modes on the FX30. Interesting. Thanks
@@THEDPJOURNEYWhat kind of SD card? When I try to set 4k DCI I get the message I need >V90.
There you go, you need a V90 SD
I’m using the prograde one in all cases 👍
Hello! Can I record sound directly to the built-in microphone FX3 and ECM-B1M hotshoe mic?
Why are 120 and 240 frame rates not available in this update and instead we have 100 and 200? Can i comback to 2 v?
Please review S5IIX :)
Amazing
Thanks 🙏
I’ve been using timecode since it was released in last firmware upgrade. It drifts quite a bit over the course of the day so I just jam sync every 60 minutes.
Precisely, that’s not how timecode should work
It defies the whole point of TC
I'm still on original firmware, nothing is compelling enough for me to upgrade.
yeah I have a couple of friends that did the same thing.
Cameras are electronics and age like cellphones and laptops. ZV-E1 is a newer camera with next gen hardware like dedicated autofocus cpu.
Hello, is it possible to upgrade fx3 camera from version 4 to 3?
Just use a sigma fp, uses the same sensor and doesn’t have the problems here if filming 24p. Can’t monitor in log to check highlight clipping unless using the atomos monitor, though.
It's not the same sensor. I think you mean the A7III?
@@blur1 Hmm.. yeah, maybe you're right.
مش عارف ليه عندي احساس انك عربي واني شوفتك قبل كده، وللسبب دا كتبت الكومنت بالعربي 😄
أنا عربي فعلا
So the sony has ana deswueeze but no open gate?
sadly
I still don’t understand why they don’t make a attentive UI for external display (smaller text and uses full 16:9 resolution instead of just outputting the 3:2 image and make it enable to output guideline, zebras and peaking to external display.
Any chance for you to do a video on the Nikon Z8 or Panasonic S5iiX?
Wish I had time, I’m a full time DP and don’t think I’ll be able to at the moment. But I’ll try
@@THEDPJOURNEY Appreciate your work.
Open gate will probably have to wait for the mark 2 version..
And hopefully 4:3 sensor with it
@@THEDPJOURNEY ja a 4.3 sensor makes a lot of sense for filming. Arri alexa has 4.3 too right?
Do you prefer the FX3 or A7SIII
FX3
@@THEDPJOURNEY I thought they the same thing same formats and sensor 😝
They do have the same sensor, but they are different in many ways, form factor, FX3 has mounting points on the body, some FX3 features don’t exist in the a7sIII
The anamorphic thing is really not required. The camera can’t do open gate so anamorphic is just ridiculous on this camera anyway. Makes no sense to use anamorphic on a cam that doesn’t do open gate.
Totally agree.
Cropping is the same as changing focal lengths. You simply lose image quality, but the fov is the same.
That's their business strategy. Don't like it, don't give them money.
@@POVwithRC That's what I said. Apart from that most people should care less about specs and just use whatever they feel most comfortable with. Skills always beat specs.
