I don’t understand why all these new features have a big BUT to all of them.
DCI 4K is a wider aspect ratio, BUT all you get is less vertical real estate.
1/48, 1/96 and 24fps is here BUT you still don’t have shutter angle and most 60hz and 120hz monitors won’t even display 24fps content correctly and interpolates the frames down to 23.97 anyways.
You get 1.3x and 2x anamorphic de squeeze BUT you actually get a lot of features disabled even though this is just a monitoring feature.
Also here’s a pro-tip: if you do DCI 4k on a memory recall page and then do UHD 4k (with any FPS, doesn’t matter which) on another, you can bypass the whole “camera needs to restart to initialize DCI 4k”. You’ll see the vertical crop happen instantly, and the camera doesn’t need to restart when swapping memory recalls.
Dci 4k has to crop in if the standard 4k is already full width. Which it should be. Its handy when you want to publish in dci or even wider, so that you have the extra pixels
@classicboy97 - Great tip on the memory recall state, i'll have to try that out! As for the "BUT"s, when you really boil it down, tech, cameras, and everything are all full of BUTs all the time, lots of tradeoffs for whatever reason. I used to be like "how hard can it possibly be to make this stuff happen?" until I actually got to start talking with some of the people making these things and they explain (in layman's terms) how difficult it actually can be and some of the limitations they are under. Now I take what I can get and provide feedback where I can (and whine a bit when I need to feel better).
I hope you keep doing this Dunna. It's different, funny and relatible.

Can anyone help me on how i can update the FX3 to the new 3.0? I have it downloaded on my computer and have tried to do the update using an sd card method but it refuses to work and says "no update files on card". Is there an alternative way possibly?

Buying the FX3 in a few days, pretty nervous about it. But happy to make the jump from the Sony A7IV.

Dunna, I went through the painful update process last week. I was on 2.0 so and I have a new MacBook Pro with M1 chip. I could not get the process done so I had to jump on the phone with Sony and learn that there are glitches with the new MacBook software that Sony has not been able to fix. I end up using an older Intel Mac to go through the process and update my FX3. Over all I spent about 3 hours of my time. Hopefully future updates work through the new Sony app and we can be done with these these painful moments. Great video, did you use the new Sony ZV E1 making this latest episode? Painful? I downloaded the firmware on my phone, plugged in my phone to my camera, transferred the file to it and updated it from the camera version menu 😑
@James - UGH thats rough! I didn't run into the issues that some people were on my M1Max but I had done some of the security things on it for another update so i was kind of pre set up. The updates weren't quick though. I ended up doing 2 and they were 30 ish minutes each plus reading things to make sure I wasn't going to screw it up. And yeah I did shoot the majority of it with the ZV-E1 and used some of those new features to get the "camera person" look. Cheers!

hey Dunna, i could really use some HELP on how to (again) upload my Phantom luts (33x or 65x) on to my FX30 - I cant do it after i have updated to version 2.0 - I think many suffer the same problem but there are no videos on this !
Nice intro... I liked it considering you normally just come in with a talking head.... Not complaining, the camera skills are being noticed, lol. I had to do 2 steps on my update too. To be honest, I was disappointed with the update. Although we got a lot, I think I speak for a lot of FX3/30 users when I say, we could've ONLY gotten shutter angle and EVERYONE would have been happy.

Did you use the ZVE1 with the auto frame tool where it follows you during the shots in the field?
Haha great eye! I used it a whole bunch on this video! Literally this whole video was shot on a tripod except for the couple shots that I wasn't in.
@@dunnadidit awesome, I'm quite excited to get mine. I've been waiting to see someone use it that way outside of a review as a real world test. Very happy with how that was. It genuinely gave the feel of having a camera person hand holding. Your added camera shake hack also helps.
The fact that the a7S III hasn’t been updated yet is just inane.
Totally different product teams unfortunately means totally different plans and pipelines. Hopefully it comes though!

Finally somebody tell the true of the new firmware, I don't soo happy with it, I think for almost $4,000 camera we need more options like 4k 120 fps in XAVC S-I and DCI 4K, focus breathing compatible with all AF lenses and more and more. I hope Sony heard you and make that in 3.1 update 😅
Aaand lumix already has all of this except focus breathing comp and true 24p, plus more anamorphic options, shutter angle, waveforms for monitoring and more

Overdue but appreciated.
Couldn’t update on the M1 Max and had to revert to older intel iMac. The upgrade process is so much more finicky than the SD-card way on the FX6. Other than that nice to see they keep adding new features to the camera!
I keep hearing people saying that, I updated on my M1 Max without any issue other than it taking a while to get through. What the heck 🤔
@@dunnadidit I just commented above before reading this. Interesting that you had no issues. I tried with the tech on the phone and he suggested to use an older Mac so obviously they are experiencing this with many users.
Honestly kind of frustrated that the a7S III has basically been forgotten. The FX3 is basically the same camera in a cinema body, so the fact that a7S III users don’t have focus breathing is kind of ridiculous at this point. Even the FX-30 has it, and it’s half the price. I’m just feeling more than a bit annoyed at Sony for not having updated one of their best video cameras for more than a year.
Thank you Sony.... But WTF is going on with ya'll leaving the a7siii without all these updates?
I get that some of them are definitely needed on the a7siii (e.g., focus breathing comp), but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the more cinema-focused features to come to what is essentially a hybrid version of the fx3. Other manufacturers have done things like DCI on mirrorless bodies, sure, but Sony hasn't, so I wouldn't expect them to start now.
Not defending them, but just trying to look at things realistically. It's a hybrid camera, not a cinema (let's be honest, cinema lite) camera like the fx3.
With all these additions, though, now, I don't see why we can't have shutter angle on the fx3...
@@Brandon4Weiss Kind of an illogical argument given it’s basically the same camera as the FX-3. The a7S III was never marketed as a hybrid mirrorless camera - it was marketed as a video camera. And as such, I as an owner of one expect that it’s at least going to get some of the video-focused updates in other cheaper cameras like the FX-30. I’d love to have other features, but all I really need is focus breathing and I’ll stop complaining.
Yeah, I totally hear all of you here. When I heard about the update I actually asked Sony straight up if the a7siii would be getting updates figuring people would be wondering. The big thing that I heard back that was not necessarily definitive was that the sony cinema line and the sony alpha line are COMPLETELY different teams. No overlap really so when the cinema team is working on something like this for the FX3/FX30, they might not necessarily be in communication with the alpha line at all. Hopefully they do find a nice easy (this is dreaming, I'm sure that nothing about building cameras or their software is easy) way to port some of the updates over to the a7siii as well but I guess we'll see.
@@JensMowatt It was marketed as a video-centric hybrid mirrorless camera, but it’s a hybrid nonetheless. Otherwise it wouldn’t have all the photo features it does. I’m not saying it doesn’t make sense to dd them to the a7siii (especially since so many people are using them alongside an fx3 and fx6, so it would be nice if they could, you know, shoot in the same frame rate and resolution). I’m saying I wouldn’t hold my breath. I had one for almost 2 years before moving to the fx3. And again, I’m not saying it shouldn’t get them, Sony has just broken me and I don’t expect them to do it.
@@dunnadidit that’s always bonkers to me that these two departments seemingly don’t communicate much, if at all. I don’t pretend to know much about what it takes to build cameras and software and add features, but it seems like they’d accomplish more if they, like, did some brainstorming together once in a while.

Haha that’s a funny way to see it, I was definitely putting on a bit of a character but in the end, it’s a free firmware update, not a new camera so I didn’t go into it with expectations that it would be anything too huge or mind blowing haha.

Uhh, I had DCI 4K in my old mirrorless released by a smartphone company in 2014. NINE years ago.
Btw, that Samsung NX1’s AMOLED rear screen is/was vastly superior to any of the Sony LCD’s currently integrated into their cameras.

Thats cool that that older camera had that. I don't think anyone was necessarily arguing that this was groundbreaking lol. In fact, the general consensus is that it was overdue. But like I said in the video... I'll take what I can get haha. I don't know how to build a camera or make the software for it so I'm stuck on this side for now haha.

FX3 trying to update 3.0 from 2.00. Do I need to update to 2.02 first? I really hate sony firmware process. I can't find the 2.02 firmware on sony site. any help thanks
You should be able to go from 2.0 to what they call an “intermediary” I believe it was 2.04 or 2.05 and then to 3. That was what I did.
