Good morning Chadwin. The FX3 was my dream-come-true camera for cinematic video. After the firmware upgrade, it has everything I need. My business parter went with the FX6, and he states that he is a little envious of the FX3, so that tells me a lot. I think that once you read how I rigged it out, that might answer a lot of the "why" as well. You asked what others may have done differently, so here goes. I did do something different. I want to take advantage of my audio handle on my FX3, so I went with the Tilta TA-MAA Mini Articulating Arm. It gives me just a bit more room to be creative with how high and different angles I can mount the monitor from the nato rail on top of the handle. I also installed the Tilta Nucleus M focus/Zoom system and mounted the handles using rosette mounts on a Tilta full-cage kit, which gave me the option to remove the top-center piece and mount the audio handle. I chose the Tilta cage because in my opinion, Tilta did an excellent job of articulating its cage with the builtin mounts already incorporated on the body of the FX3 (keeping in mind, that I want to build a system around my camera body, and not vice-versa). The nucleus-M left and right handles allows me to utilize the zoom and focus knobs, using only my left and right index fingers when hand held, or utilize the included hardware to mount them to a shoulder rig set-up. I also have the option to use the handles while using the rig on a tripod mount, or the option of using the FIZ when tripod mounted (or have someone else control the focus and zoom from a director monitor or over the shoulder. My motors are both mounted right-side 10 inch rod. The system is fantastic. I have the Nitze monitor cage on the Atomos Ninja 5+.The whole system is powered with a 160 WH V-mount external battery attached to the SmallRig V-mount battery plate, which allows me to supply power to my Sony via a USB-C line, (while still having the Sony battery installed as a backup to run the camera, should the external batter fails), d-Tap to the monitor, d-tap to the Nucleus-M system and still have a USB-A plug available. I have the Small Rig Matte Box on the front. Not at all the matte box I ordered, but it will do. I watched your video a few times before deciding what I wanted on my rig. Thank you for your input. I did a. lot of research before building my first Frankenstein Rig, but it was well worth the effort, because I love the results.
I never get tired of seeing how a rig makes a camera look so much more expensive and legit 😆 (and even though this cam already is). Great impression for clients lol
Check out Kondor Blue's 15mm rod baseplate. It comes with a quick release plate too! They also make a steamlined modular cage for the fx3 and an extension for the native handle!
1 year ago i was watching this video and had a notepad full of wishlist items.. i was so eager, so jealous! Finally i've got everything x2 (body, eails, cages, handles, wireless transmission, atomos, i even managed to get the fx lion from U.S.A) except the cine lens, which i prefer to save some money for DZO or Irix! Thanks for the inspiration!
That is awesome! 👏 nice work making your own goals and dreams come true. Sounds like a great rig. It took me many years to build up to this and I’m always trying to improve my builds, so I know how it goes. Those are great lenses also!
Just the other day Smallrig teased an add-on to their XLR handle extension that allows you to have a hot shoe and other 1/4 mounting points right on top of the XLR portion of the handle. Not really what you wish for, but close enough!
Thanks, I just ordered a FX3 and I'm looking for ideas on how to best rig. Currently, as primarily a photographer, I already have a good selection of all Sony e-mount glass - so with the focus breathing update (v3.0) that's already covered most of my likely lens needs with AF. Manual focusing is likely less good on Sony as most lenses have short focus throws. I need to explore pulling manual focus - as an option for racking between two points, but feel that to start I will be more reliant on AF. In terms of V-mount batteries I wondered what your view was on SmallRig's latest offerings? Compact but pretty expensive? Might be good though. I agree I wouldn't want to risk 'bricking' an expensive body by getting a power surge from a dummy battery plugged into (incorrectly) a V-mount. I need to explore PolarPro's matte box too. Previously I had thought about using the SmallRig pro version with a Polar Pro (PM) variable ND in 82mm. Maybe drop in fixed NDs are good too, but slow to use in a fast moving outdoor scenario. If using controlled lighting indoors then probably OK- more tricky outdoors in real variable lighting (eg moving clouds, requiring frequent exposure changes).
Thanks for watching! Depends on the jib of course and the weight it holds, but you could just put the whole camera on with v-mount and all. If that doesn’t work, I’d run a very long cable from the camera back to the handles where you’re controlling the jib and mount the v-mount there with a few clamps.
Just a few things I would change Use the Portkeys BM5 WR (over 2k Nit, camera settings control over the screen and...an SDI!), on the bottom a lens holder, some strap to keep the cable ordered in place and a more compact Rode Videomic NTG (this way you could oftentimes get rid of the obnoxious designed top handle).
I haven’t put it on a side handle, but easily could since there’s a cold shoe on top. I prefer to have my monitor centered whenever possible but can’t always.
can you post a list of each item on that vlock mount setup.. literally can't find any apart from the vlock plate.. and you haven't posted them either on the description
Im debating to power my a7siii either using dummy battery route or usbc. Do u think dummy battery has more risk of frying the board inside? I know dummy battery have regulated power. But im not sure if sony intends to make the camera to power this way.
Honestly, you can really do it either way. I’ve powered the a7siii and FX3 with a dummy battery to d-tap and dummy battery directly plugged into the wall, both without any issues. The only thing is, without the hole for the cable to come out, you have to leave the battery door open or remove it completely. USBC works great, you just need a power bank or v Mount battery with USBC PD.
Looks good, I’d definitely power the ninja off the vmount for longer battery life and that way with a smaller dummy battery you can tilt the monitor without hitting the mic
Yes, that would be a great way of doing it! I was originally gonna do it like that, but I keep hearing people having issues with frying their cameras when running the monitor and camera off of the same v-Mount because power can ground through the HDMI cable, so I’ve been avoiding it. But I suppose if you power it up/down in the right order, it shouldn’t be a problem.
@@stanleystevens6278 it shouldn’t, just plug everything in before powering on. Then turn everything off before unplugging anything and you should be good.
great video! I use a similar set-up, a few pieces missing, and I must say, I hope people dont think this rig is lightweight! I was shooting handheld the other day and it's still a real strain. No way around it, and would be the same on a bigger camera, but just worth pointing out (Oh and I wish so much the XLR unit came out to the left, the mic cable and etc get in the way so much)
Nice! Glad to hear you’re rocking a similar setup and liking it so far. Yes, it’s definitely still a pretty heavy setup, especially for long handheld shoots. I haven’t had an issue with the XLR ports bothering my yet; but maybe I’ll run across that scenario sometime
How can you power the Atomos Ninja with that battery? It looks like you are using a NPF. I"d love to power everything on the rig with just the VMount.. Great video!
You can def power the ninja from just the v-mount and sometimes I do. But there can also be power issues where the monitor could short your camera if you unplug or plug in the hdmi cable While powered on, so you just have to be careful. The ninja comes with a dummy battery plate and you can just plug in a barrel to d-tap connector to it, then plug it into d-tap port on your v-mount battery

@@rodrigopolozzi767 great question man. unfortunately, Tilta only makes the focus grip with options for the Sony NPF batteries or Canon BP batteries. They dont make on that takes the new Sony Z batteries.
Would you say the 50 Wh Nano One battery is good enough to power your camera via usbc for an all day shoot? Trying to decide if I should get the Nano Two (98 Wh) or the Nano One (50 Wh) for my Panasonic S5 rig. Or possibly get two Nano Ones maybe? I’m interested to hear how your new FX3 rig has been working out for you in this regard so far 🤘🏼
The 50wh is not enough for a full day of shooting on it's own. Depending on how long your camera is on continuously or how many devices you're powering off of it it's probably 2-3 hrs. I'd definitely go w/ 100wH if you're looking to go full a full day. The FX3 rig is working great!
That totally depends on your needs. They both have nearly the same image actually. Do you wanna take any photos or use a gimbal-FX3 Do you need SDI output, internal ND filters and do a lot of handheld work, FX6.
Hi Chadwin! Thanks for sharing your rig. Can you also link to the tilta side focus grip? I looked at the tilta homepage, but see no model with arrival rosette.
I’ve been using a vmount battery with USBC PD, that way I can go directly into the camera’s USBC port to power it. Works well and doesn’t require any adapters or a dummy battery
Ha, sooooo many of these videos, hate to break it to you but very few “cinema cameras” give any thought to a microphone… maybe a dude on a monopod grabbing B-Roll at an event… As an FX3 owner, former Red Dragon owner and user of Alexa, Venice, Red’s etc… the actual camera for “cinema” use needs good power distribution for accessories, backfocus adjustment on the lens mount (PL kit with shims would help the FX3 here), hard fixed rig points for video transmission and monitors and ofocurse good battery solutions and lightweight or studio rods… rare cars you’ll need studio offset rails. That’s it
Very good video, I have a question to see if someone can solve it, I have a Sony a7siii I don't know whether to use a USB C cable for power with the v-mount battery or use a fake battery, what do you think?
thanks! well, handful of reasons. the Fx3 has IBIS, it's much lighter and smaller so it's easier to throw on a gimbal and use handheld for longer hours. However, I do wanna get the FX6 but it's been on backorder for months, very difficult to get right now!
Hi, I just discovered this video which I stumbled across because I’m looking to power my A7siii with a V Mount battery. Can you point me in the direction of where to purchase the correct USBC cable from please? Thanks
Right on! Yeah, honestly you can use just about any USB-C cable. What you need though is a V-mount battery that supports USB-C PD to plug into. Or a powerbank with USB-C PD.
Turning it into a real cinema camera and then using it as a solo operator run'n'gun camera...but it looks good, what's more important than that :) :) :)
😂 well, it can definitely be used a solo operator cam, or I can throw my wireless transmitter on there and pull out the nucleus Nano focus wheel so someone can pull focus remotely. It’s functional either way.
yeah, I know you can remove the battery door, but every time I try, I feel like I'm forcing it too much even though I've pulled the spring loaded pin back. I just don't wanna break it!
Hey Chad, How are you connecting the base plate to the Manfrotto dove tail plate? From the pictures on Amazon it looks like there is no way to connect it to the Niceyrig Base plate? Thanks for any help...
you're right most productions record audio separately and that's typically what I do, unless it's an interview and at that point I'm not mounting mic on top of the camera either.
I have a sony a7rii and I'm turning it in a cinema rig camera can i plug my USB cable from the battery first power USB port and d tap 97wh to my camera ? If I don't have a battery plate or do I need a plate 🤔 I bought a small v mount plate for my battery
nice! you may be able to power the camera from the USB port, but it depends on it's output. if it's only 5V, it won't work. If it's 8-12v it probably will be enough output. You don't have to have a powered battery plate, I'm not using one in this video.
Thank you for the video. How are you managing the audio when you are recording to the ninja v? Does the top handle XLR system record to the Ninja V or you record the audio to the camera and the video to Ninja v?
Hey! Just had a quick question, i have a 13400 mAh with 190Wh v mount battery, i just wanted to ask to see if i can use this v battery safely with sony fx3 with dummy to d tap cable???
hey sorry for the late reply--just seeing all your comments now. you have to get a dummy battery to d-tap cable that has a regulator built into it, otherwise you could fry the camera with too much power. this cable should work--but I'd say use at your own risk. the manufacture doesn't recommend using dummy batteries although I do all of the time! geni.us/ZdummyEdit
@@AaronStoneVLOGS haha we’re in the same boat then! I’ve been trying to get the FX6 but it’s literally been on back order all year, like so many other things this year. Chip shortages are the worse!
@@chadwin yes it’s insane. I’ve got a local Sony dealer combing the earth. I think i read that the sony plant the FX6 is manufactured in burned down or had an explosion just before the chip shortage. It may be a WHILE.
@@chadwin what i actually mean is that you are contradicting yourself. 4:2:2 is a form of encoding while raw is the sensor data prior to encoding. so i see a discrapency here
It's definitely not a very robust mount, but it seems to be holding up fine so far. It's the same design on the Sony FS5 and other larger cams from them.
I really think FX3 missed out on so many important cinema features - true 24p, shutter angle, waveform, anamorphic mode, DCI 4K, time code - not to mention internal ND, hybrid articulating screen, removable EVF, dual bottom 1/4 screw, better LCD - that it only makes us wonder why Sony not only placed it in the FX line but also priced/spec'ed/released it so similarly/closely with A7S3. And the major addition being the XLR handle is actually not as versatile or functional as your own handle plus a separate XLR-K3M unit.
Yeah, there are a lot of "cinema camera" features that are still missing, many of which you mentioned. However, I will say I would still choose it over the a7siii because you get the XLR inputs and red tally lights to let you know you're filming and it has a build in fan, so you never have to worry about overheating. It's a great B-cam or gimbal cam too if you're gonna match it to the FX6 or FX9.
I love your passion my dude but on a 24mm lens that mic is gonna be very visible, you're gonna have to pull that monitor back a bit. Everyone of these videos done by people who know their gear just confirms for me that I'll never have a comfy, balanced run + gun documentary rig for my a7s3/FX3 that includes a shotgun mic into an XLR adapter + a nice monitor. I have accepted my fate.
With all due respect -- all that hassle to get to the screen with manual focus? No. I would just have 2 rigs, the BMPCC for all my manual work, and the Sony for autofocus type run and gun projects. That is the one thing I hate about Sony -- the clicky wheel screen.
Yeah, I’ve actually done shoots with the FX3 and the pocket 6k paired together, if you shoot flat they can be paired and colored together pretty nicely! I don’t always run with manual lenses, just depend on the project cause the Sony’s have such great AF! Having two rigs is very nice, so def go for it!

Hi Chadwin! Thanks for sharing your rig. Can you also link to the tilta side focus grip? I looked at the tilta homepage, but see no model with arrival rosette.
Yeah no problem! They do make it, but it looks like it’s out of stock right now.

Hi, what kind of cable u used to draw power from vmount to the body itself? Is it batter than using dummy battery?
I’ve been using a vmount battery with USBC PD, that way I can go directly into the camera’s USBC port to power it. Works well and doesn’t require any adapters or a dummy battery
@@chadwin Thanks for your reply! But what kind of cable you used? Do we need fo consoder the quality and voltage of the cable?
Does power over usb c only work with the FX lion beaus they can output more than 5V over USB?
Does your Monitor create vibrations/resonance that gets picked up by the mic? I cannot mount my ninja to the handle due to this.
DOPE Video
Thanks man!
Hello, could you please tell me why on my on-camera monitor the picture is not displayed in full screen?
incredible
hey thanks for watching!
Ha, sooooo many of these videos, hate to break it to you but very few “cinema cameras” give any thought to a microphone… maybe a dude on a monopod grabbing B-Roll at an event…
As an FX3 owner, former Red Dragon owner and user of Alexa, Venice, Red’s etc… the actual camera for “cinema” use needs good power distribution for accessories, backfocus adjustment on the lens mount (PL kit with shims would help the FX3 here), hard fixed rig points for video transmission and monitors and ofocurse good battery solutions and lightweight or studio rods… rare cars you’ll need studio offset rails.
That’s it
Very good video, I have a question to see if someone can solve it, I have a Sony a7siii I don't know whether to use a USB C cable for power with the v-mount battery or use a fake battery, what do you think?
Great looking rig and very useful information, But why not get the FX6 for the same costs?
thanks! well, handful of reasons. the Fx3 has IBIS, it's much lighter and smaller so it's easier to throw on a gimbal and use handheld for longer hours. However, I do wanna get the FX6 but it's been on backorder for months, very difficult to get right now!
How do you use the HDMI clamp when it's blocking the door to the HDMI Port?
Love it!
Thanks! Hope it helps with your camera build
@@chadwin could you send me a list of the parts and pieces from this video
Hi Chadwin! Thanks so much for you vid rigging the FX3, Helped me a lot!:) That XLR-cable, do you have a link? Can't find one one line.
I have the same v mount battery and connected via usb c but my camera (fx3) doesn't turn on. Do I need to turn a setting on?
or do i need to leave the battery in the camera?
@@grii646 Nice! You do have to keep the battery in the camera!
@@chadwin Awesome! Thanks for the response
@@chadwin one more question. can i power both the ninja and camera with that battery?
how much does it cost without the camera??
Turning it into a real cinema camera and then using it as a solo operator run'n'gun camera...but it looks good, what's more important than that :) :) :)
😂 well, it can definitely be used a solo operator cam, or I can throw my wireless transmitter on there and pull out the nucleus Nano focus wheel so someone can pull focus remotely. It’s functional either way.
what lens adapter is that? theres no link
Here’s the basic one I use when I don’t need any electronic connection.

How can we use gimbal on this rig then?
You can’t. You would need a massive gimbal. Instead break it down some before mounting on a gimbal. Also, my muscles couldn’t take it haha 😆
This was nicely presented, thank you.
Hey thanks! Hope it helps
8:50 You can actually remove that door quite easily with no tools required.
yeah, I know you can remove the battery door, but every time I try, I feel like I'm forcing it too much even though I've pulled the spring loaded pin back. I just don't wanna break it!
Hey Chad, How are you connecting the base plate to the Manfrotto dove tail plate? From the pictures on Amazon it looks like there is no way to connect it to the Niceyrig Base plate?
Thanks for any help...
there are plenty of 1/4 20 and 3/4" threads on the bottom and top of the nicerig baseplate I'm using. you can easily attach a QR plate to the bottom.
Why don’t you connect a DC from the battery to the monitor?
Could you use that focus handle with an E mount lens that has the switch to change the lens from M-AF
How long does FX3 last with the FXLion Nano One battery?
Nice Channel ! Can you make a video about how you color grade and export your hdr vidéos? Thank you a lot
thanks! I can definitely make a video about how I color grade soon! I'm still trying to master HDR, so IDK that'd I'd be much help there yet.
I’m going to copy you. Thank you for putting in all the work. Haha just kidding, I love your Vmount battery solution. Sleek 🤘🏼
Haha 😆 feel free to copy anything you want! I’m hopping people do find useful things and make it their own. Good luck on your setup!
@@chadwin Got links or part numbers for the base plate?
Every pro cinema production other than documentary records audio separately. I would not include the xlr handle as being "cinema".
you're right most productions record audio separately and that's typically what I do, unless it's an interview and at that point I'm not mounting mic on top of the camera either.
What is the total cost of all those accessories?
Does the top handle XLR system record to the Ninja V or you record the audio to the camera and the video to Ninja v?
the ninja v record all of the audio internally on the SSD since it comes over the HDMI cable. you can just use the XLR top handle like normal
Thanks
I’d Magic arm the monitor to place it over the mic.
Yeah that would work! I just haven’t found a magic arm I like or trust yet. They always spin and fall out of position on me.
Love it
Thank you!! 🤛🏻
Looks awesome! how much does all the equipment cost together?
thanks! oh, good question. lemme add it up and get back to you with an exact number!
@@chadwin how much then?
@@sonofbaconator777 Enough to just buy a better camera lol
Hey! Just had a quick question, i have a 13400 mAh
with 190Wh v mount battery, i just wanted to ask to
see if i can use this v battery safely with sony fx3 with
dummy to d tap cable???
hey sorry for the late reply--just seeing all your comments now. you have to get a dummy battery to d-tap cable that has a regulator built into it, otherwise you could fry the camera with too much power. this cable should work--but I'd say use at your own risk. the manufacture doesn't recommend using dummy batteries although I do all of the time! geni.us/ZdummyEdit
Does the Fx3 still don't have shutter angle like a true cinema camera?
they haven't added shutter angle yet nope. but can always adjust your shutter speed to match the 180 degree rule easily.
Glad I found your channel! Subbed! Question for the basecamp vnd - Which nd do you use the most for run n gun situations, the 2-5 or 6-9?
Thanks! I usually find that the 2-5 stop VND is enough for my needs. Every once and a while if it's really sunny, I'll use the 6-9 stop.
That rig this is taller than a iHOP stack of pancakes.
😂 😆 yeah! That’s the thing with the Fx3, if you add anything on top of the handle, it starts to get awkwardly tall!
@@chadwin oh I know! I’ve got one. I think the FX6 is my next purchase. I think it ends up being smaller lol.
@@AaronStoneVLOGS that’s insane! If it actually burned down…..makes a lot of sense why the back order is so bad.
Congratulations. You built an FX6
haha 😂 basically! But, since I rigged out my FX6 now-does that make it an FX9?? 🤔 ua-cam.com/video/4eWZvNCAP48/v-deo.html
Matte Box Link doesn`t work... why?
14:05 "ProRes *RAW* 16 bit *4:2:2*". Say that again but SLOWLY
haha 😂 yeah for reals! I feel like most of the stuff I say is a tongue twister on this channel...too much technical jargon
@@chadwin what i actually mean is that you are contradicting yourself. 4:2:2 is a form of encoding while raw is the sensor data prior to encoding. so i see a discrapency here
@@drafeirha haha you're totally right! Good catch. it is RAW, not 422. I have a bad habit of saying that I realize now.
PD = Power Delivery
I’m trying to find out when are you going to just sell that setup! Lol
😂 not anytime soon, I’m loving this camera, it’s my favorite! But maybe someday…..
Really helpful. Thanks a bunch. Note: For the love of god, download a copy of your closed captioning and do a word count on “actually”
😂 apparently I use that word a lot and don’t notice cause you’re not the first person to mention it….actually
To me the mic holder with its tiny screws seems weak. Should we be concerned? Seems it was designed for a lighter weight mic.
It's definitely not a very robust mount, but it seems to be holding up fine so far. It's the same design on the Sony FS5 and other larger cams from them.
@@chadwin
Thank you for the reply 👍
link for shirt please, kinda love the design "ANTI VERTICAL CLUB"
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍📸📸📸
Why would you need a follow focus if it already has auto focus
One vertical build to bring them all and in the darkness bind them…
Turning a Sony fx3 cinema camera into a real cinema camera
haha 😂 yep!
