Both Ren and Chinchilla have commented that from the time they met, they were like siblings, understanding each other's performances and humor. You would enjoy their collab I Forgot How to be Me - another extraordinary song, and vocally very different.
Yep she is him in female form and he her in male form. They compliment each other so well. I would so go to a concert of them, Ren and her solo and Great Push...2 hours of Bliss...
How to be Me (Live) with Chinchilla needs to be in your queue. One thing that makes this piece catch your heart is that they are not listening/matching each other. They are each singing WITH the other with their being. It gets captured here and is captivating. Thanks for letting us be moved with you.
"How to be Me" is another stellar collab between these two amazing artists. I am certain you'd love it! The live versions mean he may do a few takes, but the version you see is a one-take live vocal performance.
Thank you for doing this reaction Beth! I would love to watch you break down Chinchilla on one of her solo pieces! Specifically, 'Fingers Live for HungerTV'. This song is an amazing showcase of Chinchilla's gorgeous vocals, range and skill! Everything I've heard her sing is amazing in it's own right to be honest. Thanks again for reacting to Ren and Chinchilla! Can't wait for the next one!
This is by far my favourite Ren & Chinchilla song. As many will comment, the song hits those of us who have delt with severe pain over time and depression. But it is still uplifting. I play it when I'm having a bad day and feel better for a while. Thanks Beth for reacting to this.
Hi Gavin, I fully agree. Ren puts into words how my life has been, but this song is so well put together that the subject matter doesn't make me feel bad. I too feel good after listening to it, a wonderful song.
Now check out Chinchilla's performance Fingers (live). It really shows her wild skill and it's FIERCE. Best video (IMO) for Ren's vocal skill (and is much more playful) is probably him with Sam Tompkins busking, doing Earned it /Mans World / Falling
Independent artists like Ren and Chinchilla need exposure on big channels like this. Thank you! Plus, their vocals are amazing, and your breakdown of technique is always very interesting.
Thanks as always for an interesting reaction! I’m not the first to say this, but it would be superb to see a reaction to ”How to be me” live with Ren and Chinchilla. I would also be super stoked to see your take on Chinchillas ”Fingers” live version.
Beth, great reaction and analysis. You make a great point about the rawness and imperfection at the end. If this had been clean and perfect, you would lose much of the emotion and impact. It is the imperfection that made it perfect. I hope you do more Ren and more Chinchilla.
This is especially haunting when Chinchilla’s voice sounds like cries towards the end. They are very in sync but still distinguishable and distinct. How To Be Me is a vocal pas de deux more than a duet. Their voices sort of swirl around one another almost like smoke. It’s crushingly beautiful.
Brilliant analysis as always, Beth. A natural progression from this will be their How To Be Me, which is once again, live. It is an amazing song and performance.
I love the rawness and admire the courage of doing these live recordings as the main video rather than an obscure "unplugged" version. Having seen a couple interviews with Ren and Chinchilla, they describe each other as artistic siblings and I love all of their duets.
How to be me live with them is also amazing. Chinchillas elements lyric video is a fun one and then her fingers live will set the bar for you going forward when it comes to singers.
You need to hear him and Chinchilla doing a song called How To Be Me (live version), incredible collab lyrics and vocals on a song about a friend he had who lost due to suicide, every song in his catalogue in all different genres has never ceased to amaze me, he is what is making music relevant and interesting again, i hope you keep going down the Ren rabbit hole, once i did...i just enjoyed my stay there.
My stray suggestion out of Rens collection would be "Humble (Feat. Eden Nash)". It showcases another facet of his voice and instead of hitting hard in the watery eyed feels, sooths and makes you feel all fuzzy inside.
I love how you described their vocals like two people who have met and have a shared experience sung in their own way but in this beautiful symmetry. ❤
Throwing in my vote for, "How To Be Me," (Live, Ren & Chinchilla). I think you'd also be interested in the complete uniqueness of, "Fingers" (Live for Hunger TV), which is Chinchilla solo with a piano. It is something I'd love to hear your thoughts on. Two very special, unique pieces. As always, I love your thoughts. ❤
There's quite a few videos of Ren and Chinchilla busking together, so they likely have quite a bit of time singing together. For some reason when she says "Sertraline and a sip of serotonin" it get's me every time. I've probably heard this 100 times, and someone is always cutting onions.
I have to jump on the bandwagon here. "How To Be Me" and "Fingers" live by Chinchilla will both knock you out, then "I Shot the Sheriff" by Ren and The Big Push, where his voice is almost unrecognizable from these, but STUNNING. Loved your reaction!
There are at least three versions of The Big Push doing that song. The one you want is the "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop" one, with Ren in red braces.
I saw another person who interviewed Chinchilla. She said this was indeed one take and they really didn’t rehearse it all the way through. Just parts. They basically are so in tune they sang off each other in this recording. Pretty amazing.
I'll add the hundredth comment suggesting the live version of How To Be Me by Ren and Chinchilla. As good as this one is, that one gives me insane goosebumps every time. Also, as others have also mentioned, Chinchilla's solo stuff is excellent, and the version of Fingers Live for HungerTV is not only good but really interesting in the way she delivers the words vocally.
Ren oozes talent - his voice, his expressive guitar playing, his lyrics, his melodies and his performance. Like nothing I've seen in years. The reason I think he is not mainstream is his songs are not upbeat in their message. They dwell on unpleasant things and and there are many people who don't want to listen to that kind of music. I am not one of them - his music is wonderful, never mind the message.
Unfortunately…or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, he refuses to sign to a major label where they have major distributing and marketing power. He would be a household name overnight if there was an entire marketing team working around the clock to make it happen. However, he refuses to sign to a major label because he refuses to change who he is or his music to fit into that mainstream. Plus he said in a recent interview that he actually doesn’t care about becoming rich or famous he just wants to live comfortably and put his art into the world for people to enjoy.
Same. I was put on to Hi Ren in December as it really started to take off. I'm listening to his music all the time now and can't help but think it's only a matter of time before he gets huge. It's not like we're listening to a couple of decent tracks or something... His back catalogue is massive and so varied. There is so much to explore. I wouldn't usually listen to much in the way of rap music but even that stuff is compelling due to the story telling in there.
I absolutely love Chinchilla. Her voice is just so out of this world. And Ren? Wow. Both their voices are so SOULFUL. And when they both look at one another, you can tell they can feel everything and can see the pain- they’re in it together. And the fact that they’ve been friends for that long? It makes so much sense.
Nothing is better than a song of truth-good or bad-he delivers his truth with such conviction and lyrical strength that can't be ignored. This duet is superb! Her raised vocal at the end there breaks my heart everytime. What a great pairing!!
I've been holding my breath as to when you would react to Ren's music and hooray! I've watched both that you've done and I especially love the breakdown I'm techniques!
When you're constantly fighting, both physically and emotionally, the struggle to feel better is always an up hill battle. Pills will numb you to everything for just a while but at a cost. You're not you. You're numb. On the days where you feel "fine", you're so worried about that mindset changing that you can't focus on the day you could be having. It's a helpless, turbulent cycle. Please don't forget to take care of yourselves.
I agree with you regarding his lyrics. The lyrics in all of his songs are so simple and so powerful and brilliant at the same time. He never fails to impact your emotions on every song.
I would like to add my voice to the calls for a reaction to Ren & Chinchilla's "How To Be Me [Live]". Get the tissues ready - I'm a 58 year old bloke and I cry every time I hear it... the emotion, the harmonies, the lyrics, the sentiment. Simply Beautiful.
I would love love love to see you reaction to Chinchilla's performance of her sing Fingers, the live for Hunger TV version. She is SO creative with her voice!
Love your reactions and this song for me is up there with my all time favourite performances. There are so many wonderful tracks to hear, but like many others would suggest, How To Be Me , Drunk in Love by them both and Chinchilla doing Fingers Live is honestly a MUST.
I truly enjoyed your comments on this song … I particularly liked when you said it reminds you of when you meet someone new but you both have so much in common… it’s like you are both saying “yes me too” … thank you for this reaction video Peace ❤❤❤❤
Something I found interesting on this track was when Chris Liepe did his reaction he pointed out Ren taking influence from Jeff Buckley in the way he sings. Ren later commented on that video to say that he used to use Chris’ videos on how Jeff Buckley sang to learn how to sing! You definitely need to check out their other main collab “How To Be Me” though as well as “Fingers (Live)” by Chinchilla
(It’s also worth noting that there are studio version of both this and How To Be Me, but the live UA-cam versions are the better, more raw versions in the eye of many
They more I hear this song the more I have to cry. It’s not the lyrics it’s like the tones of their beautiful voices just grabs my heart and squeezes it.
All of the suggestions so far are spot on. I would like to add 3 more to that list. 'Humble' ren and eden nash 'Ocean' ren and eden nash 'Diazipam' by ren All 3 highlight his unique vocal range and are beautiful songs. Also anything by the big push (ren band) And anything by Ren and Sam Tompkinson.
Hi Beth, thank you for reviewing this song. Not only is it a wonderful performance by both Ren and X Chinchilla but Ren puts into words how my life has been for nearly 50 years. "I'm still here in this bed that I crawled in, I hope I am someone else in the morning" that is me. Any how, it is such a wonderful performance, like most of Ren's and X Chinchilla's music, I can sit back and just enjoy the brilliance of the song without delving deep into the subject matter.
Please checkout Ren and Chinchilla’s live performance of “How to be me”. They take it to the next level. Ren is such a genius when it comes to his lyrics and performing his masterpieces.
Woohoo! I'm so glad you listened to the suggestions by many and did this video. The lyrics are so deep and impactful and yet there's an almost hopeful, uplifting feel to the last part of the song.
Give me raw emotion and passion over perfection any day of the week. This version of the song is absolutely beautiful in its imperfections - imperfectly perfect!
I love how Ren bends words that normally do no not rhyme. I also love the harmonies between both of them. Either of them could have overpowered each other vocally.
Thank you for doing this. I found your channel about a year or so ago and I appreciate how you break down the technical aspects of singing. I know nothing about the art of singing but I learn so much from your reaction videos. When I found Ren in January, I wanted to know if what I was hearing was as good as I thought it was, from a technical side, and I really wanted to hear your reaction to it. I even sent you an email asking for one haha. Your reaction never came and I thought maybe you did hear it and didn't want to say anything bad, because I don't know what I'm hearing. I'm glad you do seem to appreciate it too, and I did recognize the quality of the songs. On a side note, I have since discovered that there are a lot of song reaction channels. I didn't know there were so many. I still like your break downs. Thank you
I was going to say you'll love ' How To Be Me ' by these two but, unsurprisingly, loads have already said it. Great track though. Personally, I love his collaborations with Eden... Both Humble and Oceans are sooooo good!
me and my buddy share this song, if we need and find it correct we share it together and time later after over n over listening we settle in and are done for the time being. there is tons to dissect when it comes to song build and such but for me n buddy its lyrics, so we share it together and keep at it till it eases up together. Ren and Chinchilla is doing great vocal work. putting very much emotion into the text and music. they arent singing a pre-written song by someone they are singing lyrics they know and mean. "been there, done that" situation. they been involved in situation so they can put the emotions into it. not just say the words but mean them.
Nice analysis reaction with fine insight into the vocal of both. Your own vocals on Wicked Game a pleasure to hear. Your voice shone purity and a delicate touch that captivated.
I agree with so many people here. "How to be me" ren and chinchilla live performance. And chinchilla "fingers" live for hunger tv is a must. By the way your cover of wicked games sounds like it was written just for you. Stunning my dear.
How to be Me is another Must do!!! Also... for Singing in his band The Big Push... See English man in New York, Praise You and Bongo Bong!!! Live videos shows his skills singing and playing other instruments!!! Must Dos for Rens Catalog for ya!!!
Love your reactions Beth. And your cover of Wicked Game is just majestic! It's now on my Spotify playlist. I urge everyone to listen to it so as to hear your gorgeous voice.
So glad you analysed this one, perfect one for you especially to break down. Loved what you said about how their singing in harmony but slightly differently told their own "me too" story from their own perspectives- that was a great way to convey it. Would love you to react to their other powerful live collaboration next "How to be Me" (written after the suicide of Ren's best friend and sung, I understand, on the bridge that Joe jumped from)
thank you for reacting and supporting my favourite two artist I listen to your song it is beautiful and you have a amazing voice thank you for sharing your talent. please please more Ren and Chinchilla ❤❤❤❤
If you listen Ren's chord selection in other songs, he absolutely chooses to be sharp or flat in very strategic moments. This song is about two different people experiencing the same challenges with depression. But, it is absolutely a style choice.
Hard to find a Ren performance that isn't live but may be worth you checking out his band , The Big Push, busking. The cover of ' I Shot the Sheriff/ Road To Zion / Hip Hop may not leave you in tears! ;P
This reaction was wonderful, really cool to hear you explain how their voices were telling the story and how it seems like when you meet someone you relate to. Awesome!
Both Ren and Chinchilla have commented that from the time they met, they were like siblings, understanding each other's performances and humor. You would enjoy their collab I Forgot How to be Me - another extraordinary song, and vocally very different.
“How To Be Me”
The live version.
Definitely the live version!
Yep she is him in female form and he her in male form. They compliment each other so well. I would so go to a concert of them, Ren and her solo and Great Push...2 hours of Bliss...
@@YoreHistory She's great, but Ren is more versatile and a superior lyricist/songwriter.
How to be Me (Live) with Chinchilla needs to be in your queue.

Thanks for letting us be moved with you.
I wish I could upvote this 100+times.
YES!
Have to agree! The dynamism between the two of them, the intimacy and without doubt the tonality is jaw dropping
"How to be Me" is another stellar collab between these two amazing artists. I am certain you'd love it!
The live versions mean he may do a few takes, but the version you see is a one-take live vocal performance.
Just came down here to say exactly that.
Live version ofc
Just finish and hell yah can't wait to see your reaction the production and lyrics is so haunting.

If you really want to be moved by Ren and Chinchilla, check out their song “How to be Me”(Live)
Finally.
You’ll lose your mind if you hear him performing War Pigs or I Shot the Sheriff with his band The Big Push.
Ren doesn’t miss.
And pick this version...I shot the sheriff/road to zion/hiphop... that's my favourite 🤘😎
Oh man and him busking singing it's a man's world. *chefs kiss* that's where I first heard him.
Chinchilla - Fingers (Live for HungerTV) would be a great reaction.
Chinchilla - FINGERS Live For HungerTV...... Her voice and performance in this are just stunning.
Here here … she’s an incredible independent artist and finger (live) is one of my fav songs of all time.
💯 its Mind blowing 🤯
Yeah it is absolutely amazing.
These 2 are great together - for stunning stripped back vocals from CHINCHILLA - FINGERS LIVE HUNGER TV - is sensational ❤

please please watch them sing How To Be Me (live) it's another amazing performance showing their dynamics together
Ooh yeah, How To Bé Me or Fingers live, both well worth thé time spent listening.
Oh, he knowsss. 😊 And choosing the space with acoustic is one of his skills. Especially evident in The Tales of Jenny Screech and Violet.
This is by far my favourite Ren & Chinchilla song. As many will comment, the song hits those of us who have delt with severe pain over time and depression. But it is still uplifting.

I didn't know there were so many. I still like your break downs. Thank you
Love this breakdown. You always do a beautiful job on your reactions. Not just on a technical front but on emotion as well. Thank you, Beth!
Roar
Thank you so much!!
Ever since someone pointed out the airy hum from them turning up the mic because shes singing so quietly I can only hear that when she starts.
Love this analysis. The comparison to First Aid Kit really resonated.
How to be Me is another Must do!!!
Also... for Singing in his band The Big Push... See English man in New York, Praise You and Bongo Bong!!!
Live videos shows his skills singing and playing other instruments!!!
Must Dos for Rens Catalog for ya!!!
You are so great mate. This song means so much to me. Thank you!
Fingers ~ Live (Chinchilla) 🤯
How to be me ~ Live (Ren Ft. Chinchilla) 🫶
Would love you to react to their other powerful live collaboration next "How to be Me" (written after the suicide of Ren's best friend and sung, I understand, on the bridge that Joe jumped from)
Great reaction and expert comments . Came for the Ren reaction and I’ve subscribed because of you 😊 I’ll definitely be checking out your voice
Do Ren x Chinchilla - how to be me please
Yes! :D So excited for this. "How to be me" is amazing, also.
Your take on this song is what made me subscribe. Really great!!
If you want to see what chinchilla can do watch fingers live. She is unbelievably talented
thank you for reacting and supporting my favourite two artist I listen to your song it is beautiful and you have a amazing voice thank you for sharing your talent. please please more Ren and Chinchilla ❤❤❤❤
Hope Ren and Chinchilla see this 😊❤
If you listen Ren's chord selection in other songs, he absolutely chooses to be sharp or flat in very strategic moments. This song is about two different people experiencing the same challenges with depression. But, it is absolutely a style choice.
This song and performance makes me cry every time I hear it. I love it so much ❤
Hard to find a Ren performance that isn't live but may be worth you checking out his band , The Big Push, busking. The cover of ' I Shot the Sheriff/ Road To Zion / Hip Hop may not leave you in tears! ;P
Definitely need to get Ren with you Beth. I find him super interesting when he explains his songs.
This reaction was wonderful, really cool to hear you explain how their voices were telling the story and how it seems like when you meet someone you relate to. Awesome!
The audio goes with the visual in all his live one take videos. He uses the locations' acoustics to help add to the performance
