I love seeing other people experiencing Ren the same way I did... completely blindly and suddenly. Even moreso when the reactions are the same, "I MUST witness more Ren" As INFJ, it's almost impossible for me to watch a Ren x Chinchilla song without getting weepy. There's something happening, it seems, in the the British music space that is creating these incredible artists. if I may, I can't suggest "Ren X Chinchilla - How To Be Me (Live)" enough. It hits me in my core and even after almost 2 years of watching, it still makes me cry. I love this new generation more than I can even begin to explain.

If Ren is the best of music today, Ren + Chinchilla are the best of Ren. They complement each other so well, and like Ren she pours every ounce of herself into her performance.
I'm often suspicious of reactors who join the Ren party late because you can often tell they're just here for the likes. But in a very short time you've distinguished yourself as one of my favourite reactors. Your reactions are genuine, emotional, and personal, and you add to the conversation with meaningul analysis and commentary. Youre definitely right but also to be fair to the reactors, a lot of the time they are literally having RENegades go into their Channel just to tell them to react to REN and so they do and then they see a huge uptick in views and probably also enjoyed the music and so they do it again, not saying it isn’t them exploiting it but it’s also totally on the fans for pestering all these reactors over and over lol
A couple of fun facts as well: this was performed with basically no collaborative rehearsal... She knew his song and essentially jumped in with blind harmonies. And of course, interpretation is always left up to the listeners, but for Ren (idk her angle quite as well), this was about chasing the cure/finding relief from the pain and mental anguish he suffered because of his illness.
Their harmonies are even more jaw dropping/impressive in "How to be me (live)" so PLEASE react to that. Also, casting another vote of support behind the request for you to react to Chinchilla's "Fingers (live for hunger tv)" and "1:5 (live)". Finally , congrats to your husband for his sobriety journey. Most interpret this song as being about prescription medication that inappropriate or advertised and how it makes you feel dead inside. He collapsed while filming a MV over the weekend because he was pushing himself to finish the latest batch of music releases despite pretty much his entire fan base telling him we'd wait :(
So, it's less about addiction, and more about the cycle of depression and how medication can cause an altered state of mind, where you don't feel yourself. The dissociation... like you are the walking dead; walking around in a floating chalk outline. I mean, the addiction thing is also an applicable interpretation... music hits you how it hits, but the original intent is a little more pointed to antidepressants/anti-anxiety medication.

I see this song not as a duet, rather it is two souls in the same space singing the same song each has a vague awareness that the other is there, but they are both so wrapped in their chalk outlines that neither can connect with each other. Chalk outlines is the state of being cut off from the outside world mentally/emotionally through the use of prescribed medications, to alleviate their various conditions. Your surprise gave it an eerie ghostly choir to my ears, like they were being observed by higher powers...

Ren really has to be one of the most musically intellectual people alive at the moment. A student of the craft, I don't think I've ever seen anyone execute so flawlessly this many types of music.
I've never used mood altering medication. But it seems to me that, like you say, this song is not about hope. I think it is about how the medication creates the "great big smile" but the side effect is a feeling of emptiness or disconnection from yourself. Like a walking corpse?
Lol, I've probably watched 100 reacts to this video because that's what I love about this music. I've watched yours at least 4 times but never seen the last 1/3 of it. Not much on commentary but didn't realize you were adding to it. I saw a videographer react, 3 vocal coaches, another opera singer, a rapper, a songwriter etc., and everyone opened my eyes to another facet of what makes this so magical. One thing about this song that someone pointed out was at one point in the song they're in harmony (not sure the correct terms), balancing each other going in opposite directions, then they switch to both in the same direction and it's so seamless. I think that's what makes them switch from sad and hopeless to hopeful and empowered. Not sure if you caught that too, but your last 1/3 addition to it seems like you did. You added to the parts they left out and stopped at the parts they got it all. This may not make a lot of sense to everyone, lol. Hopefully you get what I'm saying. Love it, keep doing what you're doing. You seem to get the same things I do from all this.

I think this one demonstrates the control he has over his voice...the cracks, the "off pitches"... all so deliberately utilized to represent the desperation and frustration.
As a 10 year sober alcoholic I feel this deep in my soul. Both Ren and Chinchilla were focusing on how we use different things as coping mechanisms, even if it isn't always a healthy one. These habits/coping mechanisms can kill our pain, but at the risk of making us numb and dead inside. Which is why we trace ourselves in a chalk outline like they do corpses in old movies. Love your reactions you are as much of an inspiration as Ren please remember that xxx❤
The dichotomy of the scenes they’re together is amazing, she sounds more motherly and caring overall that’s why she’s reaching out, while Ren in taking the meek/ self protecting stance so they don’t get hurt, all in all it describes a protector

Chinchilla’s style in this is so dynamic to me. She moves back and forth in town between like, wounded animal and sexy as silk. Meshes so well with his painful moments, and his powerful moments.

Yes! I have watched so many people react to this performance, lots of great reactions out there. But I’ve never heard anyone talk about the tension Chinchilla communicates with her hands. It’s a small detail and not really related to the music directly. But it struck me from my first viewing. She shows us such a potent desperation to touch him, to grab him, to seize him. I find it so powerful. So I absolutely love that you talked about it 🙏🏻

Both of these artists can give a master class on singing to fit a song. Soft and gentle, hard and anguished, piercing perfect harmony, then sometimes just throwing a note out with focus strictly on feeling, regardless of the actual note that comes out.
Hey Nicole! I have heard this version of the song so many times and it is wonderful to see someone finally recognise that this scene, the actual physical scene, is about two people dealing with their own problems, whatever those might be, and that each person represents a different aspect of each other. It was a very deliberate effort on their part to frame the scene as they did. If you listen to the studio version of this song, it is exceptionally different, to the point that it doesn't even sound like the same song. The interplay between their physicality and their musical emotion is so prevalent in the live version that the studio version feels utterly inferior and so simple, in a negative way. Love your work as always! Keep digging, but you really should check out How To Be Me (Live), Ren x Eden Nash - Humble, and Crutch ft. Bibi (this one is extremely personal as it was his direct response to first becoming sick also it was the track with his actual girlfriend, Bibi, at the time). You'll love the very positive and upbeat style of Humble but appreciate the deep visceral emotion and physicality of Crutch.

You’ll find you can never predict what REN will do next. He’s that level of genius. The most incredible part is everyone can take from his songs what they need to hear. I always thought this video was about the feminine side of himself coming out-the more nurturing side. Like in Hi Ren, the light flickers, then she appears wearing virtually the same clothes & jewelry as him. So, again he’s talking to himself, only this time it’s more comforting, but still painful. “Chalk Outlines” touches me deeply no matter how many times I watch this video or hear this song. Ren has been able to express through his songs what I have been unsuccessfully trying to communicate to others regarding my mental, emotional, and physical struggles. The studio version is also incredible. However, in my personal opinion, it does not come close to the live version. This performance is so much rawer, emotional, and visceral, and Chinchilla's performance here elevates the song to a whole new plain. I wish the live version would be available on Spotify. Someone (Obj Owl @JoesTheBestInTheWorl) shared his interpretation, I think fittingly so, “The sound of the folding chair opening up fills the empty space with echoes emanating from the walls and then diminishes. Ren uses this to compose the song, with Chalk Outlines representing the empty space that he feels within. Chinchilla, who also emerges from the walls and echos Ren throughout and suitably for an echo, has the last word, leaving a dark empty space. It's dark on the gallows.” Given Ren's medical history, I interpret this song to address mental illness diagnoses, and prescription psychotropics, which leave you emotionally dead (hence, the chalk outlines around your dead self). Even on a relatively good day when you might not want to take your pills, you take them “just in case,” and you never truly enjoy “being ok because all things change,” i.e., your well-being is usually short-lived and followed by another bout with depression. In her opening line, Chinchilla even mentions the antidepressant (SSRI) “Sertraline” and references serotonin. I can attest to the reality of this; for over 15 years, I was prescribed a cocktail of max doses of psychotropics, including Sertraline, until I decided to carefully wean myself off all medications in 2014. The side effects of the drugs were too many and too severe; they left me an emotional zombie, while the benefits were negligible. I lost all capacity to feel love, compassion, or empathy, while feelings of anger, rage, and periods of disabling depression remained and were potentiated and frequently dominated my psyche. I am still struggling daily, but I rather feel pain than nothing at all. I would recommend you also check out Ren's other collaboration with Chinchilla, the “How to Be Me” live version, as well as their busking sessions in Brighton, performing “Sexual Healing” (Marvin Gaye cover) and “One Dance / Drunk in love” (Drake/Beyoncé cover). The latter two are of a much more joyful nature. As for “Chalk Outlines,” it is one of my favorite songs right now; it is beautiful yet sad. Looking forward to more Ren reactions from you. God bless.
This is a consequence of the advertising, marketing, and profiteering off of pharmaceuticals, the lazy and greedy medical professionals who get gifts and kickbacks, who do 'paint by numbers' medicine and so easily write a script as 'there is a pill for everything.' Even something like acetaminophen (Tylenol, Paracetamol) is known to have the side effect of flattening emotional highs and lows.
The best musical “siblings”. Ren has called her his sister from another mister and a female version of himself due to their similar approach to music. For me I think it shows in the fact that they both have that something special that draws you in and demands attention. To see it fully for Chinchilla, check out her live version of Fingers. This song always reminds me that one of the (many) things that makes Ren so great is his ability to know exactly when to be complex, keep it simple, or even use silence to get his message across. He isn’t flexing his guitar skills in this, just playing exactly what is needed with that beautiful guitar tone. And my favourite line in this is so simple, totally devoid of all the clever metaphors that he is so good at using, but it hits soooo hard: “I’m scared of being okay cause all things change”. I think anyone who has been through any struggles can relate to that feeling of not trusting that anything good will last. You can’t just enjoy it because you’re busy worrying about how long it will last and the feeling that will come when it’s gone. And then good days just make the darkness feel so much worse because you remember the light that’s gone… Ren is so special. He keeps being so relatable that it reminds us that we’re not alone. And we will always make room for more RENegades down the Ren rabbit hole cause we all need his light in the darkness 🐰🕳️ If you want more emotional singing from Ren, please check out one of my personal favourites: Crutch feat. Bibi. It’s an older song from before he was finally correctly diagnosed with Lyme disease and was written after a breakdown following multiple emergency trips to the hospital. It is heart wrenching and beautiful. And very different from everything else in his catalogue.

I see this song not as a duet, rather it is two souls in the same space singing the same song each has a vague awareness that the other is there, but they are both so wrapped in their chalk outlines that neither can connect with each other.
Chalk outlines is the state of being cut off from the outside world mentally/emotionally through the use of prescribed medications, to alleviate their various conditions.
Your surprise gave it an eerie ghostly choir to my ears, like they were being observed by higher powers...

Ren really has to be one of the most musically intellectual people alive at the moment. A student of the craft, I don't think I've ever seen anyone execute so flawlessly this many types of music.

The "hope" is sinking into a new addiction to distract you for a while.
I've never used mood altering medication. But it seems to me that, like you say, this song is not about hope. I think it is about how the medication creates the "great big smile" but the side effect is a feeling of emptiness or disconnection from yourself. Like a walking corpse?
Lol, I've probably watched 100 reacts to this video because that's what I love about this music. I've watched yours at least 4 times but never seen the last 1/3 of it. Not much on commentary but didn't realize you were adding to it. I saw a videographer react, 3 vocal coaches, another opera singer, a rapper, a songwriter etc., and everyone opened my eyes to another facet of what makes this so magical. One thing about this song that someone pointed out was at one point in the song they're in harmony (not sure the correct terms), balancing each other going in opposite directions, then they switch to both in the same direction and it's so seamless. I think that's what makes them switch from sad and hopeless to hopeful and empowered. Not sure if you caught that too, but your last 1/3 addition to it seems like you did. You added to the parts they left out and stopped at the parts they got it all. This may not make a lot of sense to everyone, lol. Hopefully you get what I'm saying. Love it, keep doing what you're doing. You seem to get the same things I do from all this.

As a 10 year sober alcoholic I feel this deep in my soul. Both Ren and Chinchilla were focusing on how we use different things as coping mechanisms, even if it isn't always a healthy one. These habits/coping mechanisms can kill our pain, but at the risk of making us numb and dead inside. Which is why we trace ourselves in a chalk outline like they do corpses in old movies. Love your reactions you are as much of an inspiration as Ren please remember that xxx❤

Yes! I have watched so many people react to this performance, lots of great reactions out there. But I’ve never heard anyone talk about the tension Chinchilla communicates with her hands. It’s a small detail and not really related to the music directly. But it struck me from my first viewing. She shows us such a potent desperation to touch him, to grab him, to seize him. I find it so powerful. So I absolutely love that you talked about it 🙏🏻

Both of these artists can give a master class on singing to fit a song. Soft and gentle, hard and anguished, piercing perfect harmony, then sometimes just throwing a note out with focus strictly on feeling, regardless of the actual note that comes out.
Hey Nicole! I have heard this version of the song so many times and it is wonderful to see someone finally recognise that this scene, the actual physical scene, is about two people dealing with their own problems, whatever those might be, and that each person represents a different aspect of each other. It was a very deliberate effort on their part to frame the scene as they did. If you listen to the studio version of this song, it is exceptionally different, to the point that it doesn't even sound like the same song. The interplay between their physicality and their musical emotion is so prevalent in the live version that the studio version feels utterly inferior and so simple, in a negative way.
Love your work as always! Keep digging, but you really should check out How To Be Me (Live), Ren x Eden Nash - Humble, and Crutch ft. Bibi (this one is extremely personal as it was his direct response to first becoming sick also it was the track with his actual girlfriend, Bibi, at the time). You'll love the very positive and upbeat style of Humble but appreciate the deep visceral emotion and physicality of Crutch.

Don’t know if you are aware but REN was taken ill at the weekend and was taken to the hospital for emergency care. He is home now but still poorly. I hope that REN sees this reaction and your surprise. It’s beautiful.
You’ll find you can never predict what REN will do next. He’s that level of genius. The most incredible part is everyone can take from his songs what they need to hear. I always thought this video was about the feminine side of himself coming out-the more nurturing side. Like in Hi Ren, the light flickers, then she appears wearing virtually the same clothes & jewelry as him. So, again he’s talking to himself, only this time it’s more comforting, but still painful. Chinchilla is brilliant too!

“Chalk Outlines” touches me deeply no matter how many times I watch this video or hear this song. Ren has been able to express through his songs what I have been unsuccessfully trying to communicate to others regarding my mental, emotional, and physical struggles.
The studio version is also incredible. However, in my personal opinion, it does not come close to the live version. This performance is so much rawer, emotional, and visceral, and Chinchilla's performance here elevates the song to a whole new plain. I wish the live version would be available on Spotify.
Someone (Obj Owl @JoesTheBestInTheWorl) shared his interpretation, I think fittingly so, “The sound of the folding chair opening up fills the empty space with echoes emanating from the walls and then diminishes. Ren uses this to compose the song, with Chalk Outlines representing the empty space that he feels within. Chinchilla, who also emerges from the walls and echos Ren throughout and suitably for an echo, has the last word, leaving a dark empty space. It's dark on the gallows.”
Given Ren's medical history, I interpret this song to address mental illness diagnoses, and prescription psychotropics, which leave you emotionally dead (hence, the chalk outlines around your dead self). Even on a relatively good day when you might not want to take your pills, you take them “just in case,” and you never truly enjoy “being ok because all things change,” i.e., your well-being is usually short-lived and followed by another bout with depression. In her opening line, Chinchilla even mentions the antidepressant (SSRI) “Sertraline” and references serotonin.
I can attest to the reality of this; for over 15 years, I was prescribed a cocktail of max doses of psychotropics, including Sertraline, until I decided to carefully wean myself off all medications in 2014. The side effects of the drugs were too many and too severe; they left me an emotional zombie, while the benefits were negligible. I lost all capacity to feel love, compassion, or empathy, while feelings of anger, rage, and periods of disabling depression remained and were potentiated and frequently dominated my psyche. I am still struggling daily, but I rather feel pain than nothing at all.
I would recommend you also check out Ren's other collaboration with Chinchilla, the “How to Be Me” live version, as well as their busking sessions in Brighton, performing “Sexual Healing” (Marvin Gaye cover) and “One Dance / Drunk in love” (Drake/Beyoncé cover). The latter two are of a much more joyful nature. As for “Chalk Outlines,” it is one of my favorite songs right now; it is beautiful yet sad.

This is a consequence of the advertising, marketing, and profiteering off of pharmaceuticals, the lazy and greedy medical professionals who get gifts and kickbacks, who do 'paint by numbers' medicine and so easily write a script as 'there is a pill for everything.' Even something like acetaminophen (Tylenol, Paracetamol) is known to have the side effect of flattening emotional highs and lows.
The best musical “siblings”. Ren has called her his sister from another mister and a female version of himself due to their similar approach to music. For me I think it shows in the fact that they both have that something special that draws you in and demands attention. To see it fully for Chinchilla, check out her live version of Fingers.
This song always reminds me that one of the (many) things that makes Ren so great is his ability to know exactly when to be complex, keep it simple, or even use silence to get his message across. He isn’t flexing his guitar skills in this, just playing exactly what is needed with that beautiful guitar tone. And my favourite line in this is so simple, totally devoid of all the clever metaphors that he is so good at using, but it hits soooo hard: “I’m scared of being okay cause all things change”. I think anyone who has been through any struggles can relate to that feeling of not trusting that anything good will last. You can’t just enjoy it because you’re busy worrying about how long it will last and the feeling that will come when it’s gone. And then good days just make the darkness feel so much worse because you remember the light that’s gone… Ren is so special. He keeps being so relatable that it reminds us that we’re not alone. And we will always make room for more RENegades down the Ren rabbit hole cause we all need his light in the darkness 🐰🕳️
If you want more emotional singing from Ren, please check out one of my personal favourites: Crutch feat. Bibi. It’s an older song from before he was finally correctly diagnosed with Lyme disease and was written after a breakdown following multiple emergency trips to the hospital. It is heart wrenching and beautiful. And very different from everything else in his catalogue.
yes, that is definitely a big reason why I am so engulfed by him. He talks about real and complex things and the way he portrays it in his music is insane. A true artist!
