Just watched it thanks to your comment and sweet goodness alive, I do not have the words. Ty for the heads up. I'd watched the music video but that live one was a flex and a half.
I truly feel like Ren is one of the most creative people on the planet. How one person can make such stunning songs and productions in such a myriad and combination of genres and styles is truly amazing.
Another masterpiece composition from Ren! :) It sounds as if you haven't heard much of Ren's singing voice, so here are a few suggestions that highlight it: "Chalk Outlines" also featuring Chinchilla. Make sure it's the live version! "Man's World" - one of 3 songs sung while busking with Sam Tompkins. "An Englishman in New York" with his band, The Big Push. "Wade in the Water" also with The Big Push. "Murderer" - live acoustic version. Take your pick and enjoy! :)
I love Ren and Chinchilla individually, but the combination of their voices is purely alchemical. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts, by light years. Thank you for the reaction, even if it knocked out your camera!
This performance is easily one of the most beautiful and powerful things I have witnessed in years. Their connection together is simply astounding. This is true artistry and talent in its highest form.
I've seen probably 100+ reactions to this song, and probably listened to it another 100 times. And someone seems to be cutting onions every time...weird. Obviously the content of the lyrics is emotional, and that is one thing. But this performance is gorgeous even without words. If this was in a language I didn't speak I feel like I would have the same reaction. It's such moving sounds.
I'm so happy you reacted to this one as I knew how fully you would appreciate ❤ For the record, as it seems everybody believes this is Ren's song, this is _their_ song as I just got confirmation from Chinchilla that she co-wrote this (and Chalk Outlines). Looking forward to more collabs from these two ❤🔥 Would love to see you react to some solo Chinchilla as well 😊
I wasn't expecting Ren! You should check out his duets with Eden Nash as well. (Or one of my personal favorites Freckled Angels which was dedicated to his late friend Joe Hughes) His library is pretty diverse. If you want to see more singing than rap there's plenty to choose from. (I think you'd really enjoy his work with The Big Push)
Another awesome reaction and analysis by you Beth! Thank you so much. I just wanted to make a note (as others may have mentioned) this song was cowritten by both Ren and CHINCHILLA. Chinny has said that she wrote half of the song and Ren the other half and she is also credited in the song description (both versions). Thanks again for another fantastic video!
Two super talented people performing for real - it's refreshing in this age of autotuned, comp'd, quantized attempts that try pass as 'pop' music but is written by teams and published by corparations for the soul purpose of making money.
whenever i listen to ren i get such a theatrical and technical vibe almost medieval honestly i just dont know how to describe it. its so unique it genuinely transcends my understanding of music and what i am used to it feels timeless
Ren is the Original "Bardcore Genre Bender" The Master Bard himself ( Shakespeare ) would have understood exactly where Ren was coming from. Ren isn't just a songwriter but rather a Performance Art Master who blends music and character acting from all the styles over the last 500 years and makes it modern and relatable to all generations even if normally you may not be a fan of whatever genre he is currently performing. While most good Performers can envoke some emotions in their audience, Ren is an Emotion Master who has control of all of them, From the Feel Good Vibes of Bongo Bong, to the Rebellion of Illist Of Our Time, to the Tragedy of Jenny and Screech, to the Mind Bending Rap Flow of Losing It, and the Internal Psych War of Hi Ren, Ren has it All! The Ren Rabbit Hole is Deep and Powerful! Get Ready for the Ride of your Life!
Great one, Beth! You’ve only just scratched the surface with Ren! His back catalogue is gold! I second Fingers live but also Little Girl Gone (requiem) live too. Chinchilla is breathtaking in both. ☺️
Such a beautiful reaction to this most amazing performance. I see Codex7777 has listed some amazing tracks to hear Ren's stunning voice. Fingers Live for Hunger TV by Chinchilla truly is a MUST.
Beth, in case you weren't aware: This song is about Ren dealing with his best friend ending his life by jumping from a bridge. They were both young at the time (early 20's) and Ren really struggled with what his life was without Joe. Ren also dealt with a lot of guilt as he got to the bridge about 5 minutes too late to save him and feels partly responsible.
@@Phazetic99 I've seen ppl saying this, ans some other ppl claiming it's not the case. Can't remember what they said about it, sorry. But that can be searched, for sure.
Also... for a Sting type song feom him and his band The Big Push... it's called Englishman in New York or for a Reggae vibe... I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop (that version!) Will Blow Your mind!!!
Thank you Beth. As usual your reaction stands out intertwining of vocal education and the intricacies of deep emotional connection. Your my fav. Cheers from Australia xx
Very glad you discovered this song to react to Beth. It is A very powerful song about grief and its effects. Those that are left behind after someone ends their existence and the pain of that is displayed perfectly by marrying these lyrics and the vocals by Ren and Chinchilla. Great analysis and discussion, I am glad you enjoyed it.
Been wanting you to do this ever since I was introduced to Ren and Chinchilla, and it surpassed all expectations Shout out to the editor earning their money at 1:40 Love that you picked up on the foreshadowing (for lack of a better word) that’s being emoted throughout And the sad clap at the end is the perfect reaction. Thanks for the reaction!
Every one recommends these two on Chalk Outlines as THE one to watch? And its great. But this one is better i think? Next Chinchilla solo? That might blow you away? Loving your channel. Subbed up.
After that extremely emotional song you owe it to yourself to have some fun courtesy of Chinchilla I suggest starting at the beginning with Elements it sounds like it came out yesterday and I can listen and dance around the house with it on repeat all day
was literally excited for you to get around to this one - I figured you'd love it. It's one of my favorites, along with Chalk Outlines (I'm sorry, I can't recall if you've done that one). They have such an engrossing dynamic!
I've been out all day and I'm just winding down, so I opened UA-cam and this is the first thing I see. I RAN to see you react to this! It's so special and that was a beautiful reaction. I knew if you ever listened to it you would love it! ❤️
Hard to appreciate they were able to perform so well in that location where Joe went to a better place and Ren takes us all to a better place too, such is life ❤
Would love you to react to either or both of Ren's songs-For Joe, Murderer Acoustic version, incredible. Also, Chinchilla-Fingers Live is every bit as incredible
This song was in my opinion song from the mind of his deceased friend Joe... "Over the rivers and valleys below, it follows me back home, and it suffocates me...". "I wish I could move get up and walk right out of this tomb". The tomb here is Joe's mind...
Gotta react to For Joe and Suicide in the same video since For Joe is the ending verse of Suicide. For his friend that comitted. All true what he said. Knox Hill interview tells more. Very sad. That ending line was For Joe, his friend.
A couple more heavily melodic tunes from Ren that have come out since you last reacted to him; Fred Again Mashup, a collection of 5 (?) formerly edm tracks merged into one acoustic performance, with beautiful, raw vocals, with simple but effective instrumentals and astatic. Back On 74/ Message In A Bottle Retake, Funk era harmonics with two excellent back up singers, a silent bassist, and Ren on electric. Falsetto for days. Frankly, it just sounds fun. Short rap splitting the two songs before Ren amazes you with his best impersonation of The Police. For Chinchilla, Fingers (live for Hunger TV), Astonishing performance, don't even bother trying to close your Jaw. Also check out her song 1:5, i'm pretty sure it's a live one take, but not 100% on that, in either case, it's a great performance, and a novel song. Ren is also dropping a new song late next week, from his upcoming album. I think i remember him previously stating that the next album would be more uplifting, and melodic, so maybe check that out as well. Edit: I meant to mention some of his busking sections, live street performances that will wow you. one with Sam Thomkins - Earned it/ Mans World/ Fallin, best of the three, and that's saying something, so, so good. Ren's Band, The Big Push - Wade in the Water/ Nina Simone/ Troubles so hard, insane soulful runs. and again with TBP - Shot the Sherriff/ Road to Zion/ Hip Hop, least impressive vocals out of all of these, but still a super fun performance of reggae, ska, and hip hop. This is one of those that you just wish you could have been there to see it live.
8:48 Beth just gave up and so did the camera! Aside from everything, the thing I really love is how methodically Ren chooses spaces for their acoustic qualities, often reverb or resonance, but here... chosen to "cut" cleanly. When you can do that, who needs mastering!?!?
finally she opened the door to ren's other side! here are some other good ones from chinchilla solo Fingers live and Little girl gone live both must be live! then ren and chinchilla again chalk outlines live, and if these dont blow you mind try Blind eye by Ren and Sam tompkins BUT it must be the Mc Sessions version! cheer hugs all around
