  • www.myboxingcoa... for boxing techniques - A Boxing How to Guide for the Pivot. The pivot is one of those often overlooked aspects of boxing. The main reason that it is overlooked is that on the face of it the pivot is not a 'glamorous' skill. It doesn't for instance offer the potential for an explosive end to a contest as does a short range left hook. Nor does the pivot catch the eye in the same way that evading an attack by using deft slips and ducks can. So, if there's one thing I'd like this video to achieve, it's to provide proof that the pivot is the single most versatile skill that a boxer uses, providing options to unlock many an adversary. After watching this video and reading the article at www.myboxingcoa..., I'm sure you'll be sold on the usefulness and versatility of the pivot and are eager to know exactly how to execute this most under-rated of boxing techniques!

    Hey
    Nice question and yes, I get you. :-)
    You might use it less against someone who backs away as you would against someone who attacks lots. You would also use it slightly differently up close as opposed to at long range. Just experiment and you'll find different ways of using it. Hope this helps

    You're right to spot the slight vulnerability during the pivot. This is a risk, but as a boxer the entire period in the ring is a risk. The trick is I suppose to minimize the risk when executing skills. On the moving left and right thing. We 'push' left, so the only reason that the right foot moves right is because we push off the left. Good comment. Constructive. Thanks

    Depends what you mean by 'twist your foot'. What's important is that the stance itself remains intact as you pivot.

    0:30 Pivot sublte move is change create angels for short range punchee
    1:10 good for long and clothe range
    1:55 Pivot to rt push off lft leg or front leg(back leg move then front leg pivot )
    2:30 pivot to left push off rt leg or back leg! (Front leg pivot then back leg move )
    So always opposite leg move when other leg push I think!

    Never heard of 'pivot action' in relation to the shoulder to be honest. Are there any other sports that you do (or in fact your day job) after which you shoulder hurts? Shoulders are complex things and can be susceptible to injury in boxing. Maybe check with your Doctor?

  • @Homeruler99

    Can you explain ?

  • @hardstock07
    @hardstock07 10 років тому

    Coach, nice demo! But could you throw in the punches combo if you pivot right or left? I would think that if I pivot right, I punch with a right hook/upper cut then a left hook. Pivot left , left hook then a cross?

    Hi Fran, could you simultaneously side step and pivot (is this your angled side step)? If I understand it correctly, keeping your lead foot in the same place lets your opponent still run into you (or at least your lead leg). And if they stop short of crashing into you, you'll end up facing the blank space in front of your opponent rather than your opponent himself. Would you elaborate? Thanks!

    • @myboxingcoach
      @myboxingcoach  7 років тому +2

      The angled side step is kind of like pivoting and side stepping at the same time - you are probable combining the mechanical elements of each. The same outcome is desired, keeping the opponent in the firing line whilst taking yourself off the centre line.

  • @cedros6453
    @cedros6453 9 років тому

    Hello, can you explain, me , please, why sometime people just "step" before the pivot? To increase speed? To make a feint? Your pivot is basic, simple, and that's perfect for me, but why do people step on their front, and then pivot? Thanks, sorry for my english level, i'm french.

    • @myboxingcoach
      @myboxingcoach  9 років тому

      +Ced Ros Your English is very good :-) Not sure why they step then pivot. A side step and a pivot are 2 separate skills.

    • @cedros6453
      @cedros6453 9 років тому

      +Fran Sands Sorry, what i mean is that they just do a little step fast forward and then pivot, step forward and pivot.And another question, as a southpaw, if an orthodox rush on me, what s the better thing to do not to move back? Side step? Pivot? Jab cross to block them? I m better to find opening than my opponents, but i'm weak when they rush at me. Thanks for your video, that s beacause of your videos that i'm a little bit better than my opponents .
