I actually just made a big pot last night. Some other ingredients that I use are: - Carrots ... thinly sliced julienne ... seems to be a common piece in other hot-sour recipes. - White button Mushrooms ... sliced ... more common in western grocery stores ... mix with or substitute for wood-ear and/or shiitake. - Wontons/Dumplings ... with pork/shrimp/etc ... if you have any leftovers ... another source of protein. - White vinegar mixed with some Worcestershire and/or balsamic ... if you don't have chinkiang black vinegar ... mix to taste. - Doubanjiang ... for added spiciness & red color ... common in other hot-sour recipes ... i will sometimes substitute Korean Gochujang, nearly similar. - Ground black pepper ... if you don't have white pepper or mix in a ratio with white pepper, as black pepper has a different profile, while white pepper has funkiness. - Any veggies you may want, although ones with a bit of neutral taste will work better, such as Bokchoy, Spinach, Napa cabbage & green cabbage ... julienned. - Coriander (cilantro ) ... depends if you are in the mood for the taste.
@@beli6664 ... No problem. Be careful with the balsamic/worcestershire, too much might overpower it. But I suggest you try to find black vinegar eventually. There might be an asian store near you. That way you get a taste reference in your mind what hot & sour soup should taste like with real chinese black vinegar. If nothing else, I just use straight white vinegar & then color it with some soysauce.
I am vegetarian and often make this soup (without the meat) at home when I cook Chinese. I love topping it with fried onions or fried wonton strips. Thanks for sharing your version. It looks SO good!!
I had some leftover pork in my fridge and was wondering what to do with it- and now I know! I have all the ingredients. :-) I have made hot sour soup many times because I love it so much. I add a bit of julienne cut carrot to mine because I loved the hot sour soup made by the Vietnamese owner of a Chinese restaurant. Thanks for the tip on the flower buds. I knew to remove the hard tip on them, but I didn't know to pull them apart. I also like mine sour and would boost the sour with apple cider vinegar. I also put in a few shakes of red pepper flake. Great video!
Easy way to make a spice bag at home: take a paper coffee filter, put your items in the middle, tie up tight with butcher’s twine and then cut off the excess from the filter. This works with cheese cloth too. I’ve done both of these when making pickles with my mom as a kid :) Awesome recipe Mikey!! :)
I love all these Chinese recipes Mike! 🥰 I grew up eating hot and sour soup as well. It’s so tasty! I love to put a few scoops of rice in my soup. Can’t wait to try your recipe!

Hi Mikey, thank you for sharing! I made this at home and it was a hit! Everyone loved it!! Usually at restaurants it's either hot, or either sour but not both. This recipe was the perfect blend of it and was super flavorful. I'm vegetarian and didn't have veggie stock, so I used Veggie Bouillon cubes and it came out great. Thanks a bunch! This will be my go to!
This is and always has been my favorite soup. I am excited at the idea I can make it at home! 😊 Thanks as always for sharing your knowledge and now your stories!
I just made this with the ingredients I had on hand (the fresh shiitake mushrooms were the reason I wanted to make it to begin with), I used homemade chicken stock and it came out SO good. I love it! Next time I'm going to make sure I have at least some bamboo shoots. The cans aren't expensive, I don't know why I don't always have some on hand.
Short story time, Hot and sour soup is my favorite especially when I am sick, early on in my marriage I had come down with the flu. I was curled up on the couch and he asked me if there was anything he could do to make me feel better. I said, oh yes there is something that will help. He piped up and said... "That soup... from that place!" He knew what it was and where to get it but didn't have the names. LOL
Years ago when I first tried hot and sour soup, I looked up what was in it. I just remember reading that hot and sour soup was known to have healing properties or used for healing sick people. So ever since then, when I'm sick, I want hot and sour soup and it does make me feel better.
Most restaurant hot and sour soup isn't very good. I got hooked on this soup from a small buffett place that nolonger exists. Their soup was very spicey and very vinegar tasting. I loved it, I've made a batch at home. It had chicken and pork juliened and marinated in soy and corn starch. I did have the woodear and shitake mushrooms, Bamboo, Tofu, Juliened carrot and ginger. I used dark soy sauce, black vinegar, mirren, sesame oil. White pepper and cayenne pepper. I like mine hot too

I couldn’t source all the ingredients on hand (pork and dried lily) but I had everything else. I just upped the tofu for a bit more protein. The result was amazing and better than I can remember from take out! Thanks, Mikey!!
Good morning from Missouri. I love, love, love your videos! I first saw you in the Dumpling Challenge video with The Try Guys. I have become borderline obsessed with Asian cooking. Thank you for the video experience of visiting all of the places you have been and giving a taste of other cultures.
Can I use tamarind paste in thickening up the soup or does it have to be cornstarch? I don’t like cornstarch because it lowers down flavors when tamarind would add more flavor. Thank you.
Hot and sour soup is great. Here in Australia, I've only ever had access to canned bamboo. It has a pleasant but very mild flavour. Mostly it is crunchy water, a lot like iceberg lettuce. Funky can cover a lot of savoury tastes that I generaly like. I hope I can try fresh bamboo sometime soon.

Here is a little trick for you: If you throw that pork into the freezer until it is not quite frozen, the meat will firm up and not be so squishy. That will make it much easier (and safer) to cut those nice thin strips of pork.
I actually just made a big pot last night. Some other ingredients that I use are:
- Carrots ... thinly sliced julienne ... seems to be a common piece in other hot-sour recipes.
Thank you for the substitute of the black vinegar I was wondering what can I use instead that was very helpful

Here is a little trick for you: If you throw that pork into the freezer until it is not quite frozen, the meat will firm up and not be so squishy. That will make it much easier (and safer) to cut those nice thin strips of pork.
I just made this soup! It's so good! Thank you so much for sharing the recipe, Mikey!
This is so delicious and flavorful. Better than any Chinese restaurant.
