This is going to be wonderful during the fall! We love hot and sour soup and my BF is going to be impressed! Thank you Father and son Pang! I love your videos 🤩
I agree. I'm in Montana and it's just starting to come into autumn. In fact, I just passed my favorite Chinese food earlier and almost stopped for hot and sour soup 🍲
This Cookbook is the most frustrating Cookbook I have ever purchased. These extremely hard to find ingredients need to be imported, and sold on ATK's website. I don't trust Amazon to buy food products. So what am I supposed to do?! I'll make a list of all the ingredients we can not find and I'll list them all here. Right now, the most frustrating thing is the Flounder powder, and the dired scallops.
I've rarely felt so connected to a person as when Jeffrey pulled the batteries out of that dancing lion.
That was hilarious
🤣🤣🤣
🤣😂🤪 it was so cute!
He's like ... Aggg....I still can't get him to put away his toys..
😄
I love how genuine they were as the Dad wasn't always agreeing with the son and instructing him not to stir too much XD
Dad is a sweetheart
Man, one third bowl of egg drop soup, two-thirds bowl of the hot and sour, add 2-3 soup wontons, and I'm in seventh heaven, cloud nine.
I love the title: Hunger Pangs.
I could eat this soup every day, IF made properly. It is always on a "chinese buffet" and terrible. This is a very easy recipe, but caution, go to an Asian market to get the ingredients at 20% of the price of the specialty section of your grocery.
Can somebody help me? I had it a couple of times with a thing that looked like a slimy black flower or mushroom, what was that? I am a chef and cook all the french stuff, this is different.
Never saw the cornstarch added to the egg but great idea. I drizzeled the egg to simmering soup, and one stir with one chop stick, it worked. This is more foolproof.
Don't think they mentioned not to forget the green onion and the fried wonton noodles on top. Golly, thanks, you guys made my day! The very best soup in the WORLD.
That black flower of mushroom is the wood ear fungus that Mr. Pang showed as an alternative to the shiitake. My mother's recipe includes wood ear along with shiitake (dried is fine, if you can't find fresh). Just be sure to soak the wood ear before adding it to the soup. (Speaking of flower, some people also add dried lily buds. These are brown an usually tied into a knot before adding to the soup.)
@@C2C. Thank you.
For years I only ate wonton soup..then one day in my 40s I suddenly made a switch and tried my husband's hot and sour soup. What a revelation! I used to go by a certain Chinese restaurant just for a quart of their hot and sour soup. Sadly, for some reason several years ago they took it off the menu! So, I have tried several recipes and other restaurants but haven't found my new favorite yet. I hope this is it!
Some places will still make something even if its been removed from the menu. Ask, you might be pleasantly surprised.
…sooooo…is it your new favorite?!
My favorite Chinese restaurant just closed due to retirement. Black Pearl in Shoreline, Washington. Best hot and sour soup. Have never eaten any other soup that matches it. They included tiny shredded pork and some black seaweed kind of stuff. Gonna miss that version of soup so much.
But this recipe and steps give me hope to try and make my own. Thanks to the chef and tiny dragon. Whoops, dancing lion.
My fav local Asian joint closed just a couple of years ago (owner died) and I was never able to squeeze that H/S soup recipe out of her in the 20 years that I ate there, no matter how many hugs I gave. I'll have to try to make this and see if I can at least get close to her bowls of spicy Ambrosia.
You guys have just saved me a few hundred dollars and fifteen gallons of gas a year. No more take-out; I can make this at home now!
Live in the Ozarks, everything is a long expensive drive away.
I am so in love with these two!
MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE!!! It's my comfort 🍲 Soup and the Soup I crave when I have a cold and not feeling well. It's just the best! Thank you for showing me how to do this. I live in an area that DOESN'T DELIVER my favorite Hot and Sour Soup 🍲 so this is a Blessing. Much Love!💗
I love how they throw shade at each other so kindly, very humorous, embodies the love and flavor that goes into cooking.
Sizzling Rice Soup is my all time favorite...love the flavor of toasty rice...and the sound of the sizzle when the soup hits the hot oily rice.
Interesting.
I've never heard of that.
I'll have to do a little research on it. 👍
Another great choice...!
We had been going to a Seattle restaurant since the mid 1970's that served excellent Sizzling Rice Soup. The restaurant was started by a first generation (legal) immigrant family, and the restaurant had passed through a couple of family generations. I moved out of the city in the early 1990's and happily drove over an hour to get the soup. Sadly, they were recently forced to close due to street crime and the homeless invasion.
I'd never had that until my mom's friend ordered it when we ate out. I've always ordered it ever since if it's on the menu! 😋
After trying several "you tube" recipes... this is finally it! This is the delicious soup I get a Chinese restaurants! Thank you!
"Souped Up Recipes" has a very good recipe. So does Food Wishes.
Hot n Sour soup, as well as, wonton soup, & 🥚 egg drop soup, are definitely my small families favorite!
So happy to see you both again 💓
I also love this kind of soup noodle. Its’ call 大滷麵.
@@Lindalinda-bl2hx
I cannot read Chinese.
What does that say?
@@mddell58 Hot n No Sour soup 👌🍜
Oh man so funny. Liked the Dragon. Would like to see a recipe for Stinky Tofu.
I will make soon and I will not stir too soon, don’t want your dad to get on me about it🤣
Now I know how to make it.
Hot & Sour Soup is probably my favorite soup of all time. Whenever I have Chinese food, if it's on the menu, I have to order it.
Until a few years ago, I had never had Hot & Sour soup. Wow, was I missing out.
I judge a Chinese restaurant's quality by their Hot & Sour Soup. It's not a terribly complicated dish, but it REALLY shows how much the chef actually cares about their work because when it's sloppily done, it shows. However, when done well, it's transcendent.
My favorite soup. I have tried for years to make it but with no luck. Now I have a real recipe. Thank you
I go with dried mushrooms, both shiitake and wood ear (Chinese black fungus). Rinse them first quickly and then soak them, add some dried chilies to the soak if you like spice. Instead of using just plain water, use the water from your soak! That water is pure gold! I add konbu as well just to bump up the complexity of flavours. Definitely try to use white pepper. White vinegar is a decent substitute for black vinegar in a pinch, but black vinegar is a whole new level. I add it closer to the end so the flavour doesn't cook off. A great garnish is cilantro or chadon beni.
My favorite Chinese soup. I used to make a simplified version of this that only had chicken broth, corn starch, white pepper (lots for heat), vinegar, re-hydrated shitake mushrooms since I couldn't get fresh, tofu (like yours), pork, and bamboo shoots. I cut everything into matchstick size. No egg or soy sauce etc since I was a bit poor at the time and had limited space in my tiny apartment fridge. But it was close enough to what I'd had at a local restaurant to make me happy. I'm sure your soup is better. I could get about 4 meals out of it.
Thanks for this recipe. You dad is a treasure " 寶藏 " !!
Oh my goodness, just landed on your video and channel for the first time. What made me stop was the Hot and Sour soup which is my absolute favorite at any Chinese restaurant!!! You and your dad are so cute!! And I would take the extra credit part making this with wood ear mushrooms which are my FAVORITE, just like your dad !!! Thank you for sharing this video and God bless you both.
Love Cook's Illustrated's recipe for hot and sour soup. I used to hate it as a kid but now I love it. This recipe is in regular rotation in our house. I just made it yesterday! So I was super thrilled to see Kevin and his dad Jeffrey do this recipe for Hunger Pangs 😄
Also just wanted to add I always put more black vinegar because I like mine really sour.
ATK, HELLO, PANGS, this just happens to my favourite soup, Most people go for WON TON, , THANKS stay well,🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Family favorites, Hot N Sour, Chicken corn and wonton soup. Thanks for the video. 💕
My favorite is hot and soup soup. I've been making ATK's recipe for years. It's a family favorite. Thank you!! I love your UA-cam channel!
AAAAAA SO HAPPY TO SEE A NEW EPISODE!
My top three soups are borsht, split pea with ham, and hot and sour. When I lived in Michigan, I regularly went to a Thai restaurant in Dearborn, Bangkok 96. They had the absolute best hot and sour soup.
Please, PLEASE give them a segment on ATK or Cook's Country.
Great intro, LOL!
Such a unique, delicious and underrated Chinese soup. Thanks for the recipe guys!!
Good morning ATK
Thanks for sharing your recipe.
Salutations from California 😋
I was concerned when I saw the tomato cans! How could I have been wrong for so long??? 😆
Yeah! Thank you both. I had no idea how to make this. You guys are really fun to watch. Glad to find ya'll!
I grew up eating my Mom’s Thai-style soups, so those are my favorites, especially Thai wonton soup. For soup at a Chinese restaurant, Hot and Sour is my favorite, but it’s difficult to find one with a nice balance of heat and tang. Thank you for sharing this recipe! It looks so delicious and fairly easy to make.
A fantastic addition😍 to the ATK arsenal.
I love you two! Give them their own show already!
I love Lenny the dancing lion.
I've really enjoyed watching this video and the interaction between the father and son! Thank you for the information and the smiles!
My favorite soup. Forget about wonton and egg-drop, this is the best.
I love hot and sour soup! Great show‼️
Perfect soup, I post this on every episode that this father/son show on ATK should be on every day & the Chinese have enough recipes to do that for years, best food show on you tube
Despite of ingredients substitutions, I successfully made this delicious soup today. I followed the instructions but used rice vinegar and balsamic vinegar instead of Chinese black black vinegar. Also I used low sodium soy sauce, 2 cans of low sodium chicken broth plus 2 cups of water and 2 teaspoons of Chinese soup base paste. I added some carrots and white pepper just before adding egg. I needed to add more cornstarch to get desired thickness.
By the way, my favorite is pumpkin soup made with Kabocha pumpkin and half and half.
Thanks gentlemen! This happens to be one of my and my girlfriend’s favorite soups! And it is the best stuff in the world when you got a cold!
I love you guys! So fun and funny. And great cooks too. I’d like to hear more about how you ended up doing this show together. Can’t wait to try this recipe!
Hot and Sour is one of my favorite soups. I am delighted to have found you and watched your whole episode to learn to make it. Thank you!
This is amazing! You two are so fun to watch ❤
Great instructions….love Hot & Sour soup!🇨🇦❤️
I love your videos. Keep 'em coming!
Hot & Sour soup is my #1 Chinese treat.
Hello U2 . Again long time no see . We realy love your cooking , it is also fun to watch .♾️ 🥰🍀🌾🍀🍃🙏👌👍👏👏
Thanks.
I think Dad should have his own cooking show.
He hasn't added much lately, but Jeffrey's had his own UA-cam cooking channel for years. Kevin wrote about it in his NY Times article "My Father the UA-cam Star" several years ago and recently built on that article for an episode of the ATK podcast "Proof".
This was a really great video. Not only is Hot and Sour soup one of my favorites, but the two of you were so charming and funny to watch. I think I'll be visiting my nearest Chinese grocery tomorrow to make this. Thanks!
Dad is smart and adorable!!
Hot and sour soup has always been my favorite! Thank you for the recipe. I can’t wait to try it!
Whenever I would get sick, I would order this from my neighborhood Chinese restaurant. It always made me feel better! I can't wait to try making my own!
Chris Lion: I KNOW, RIGHT?! Just the best when you're head is stuffy and you're 🥶 cold. It's SO comforting. Years ago it would have been Homemade Chicken 🐔 Soup 🍲 when I was growing up...but that was before I dined at a Chinese Restaurant. Hot and Sour Soup... ain't nothing like it!
Many Blessings to you.
✝️💗🙏🕊️🇺🇲
Thank you very much for this authentic recipe. I also find hot sour soup to be comfort food. Here In Melbourne Australia, I rate the cafe or restaurant on the quality of this soup.
Damn, Jeffrey was not a fan of Lenny at all. Great episode, Pangs!
My favorite soup! I like the soak in salt water method for the tofu. Thank you sirs. Besides being a great everyday soup, it’s much better than chicken noodle soup for a cold, especially if you are congested.
Curious.
Why do you prefer the salt method? I'm always learning more. 👍
We freeze the tofu. When thawed it's like a flavor sponge...
Do you have a ratio of salt to water to soak the tofu in? For how long?
@@margihansen970 I don’t have a ratio. Sorry, I like the idea. I would guess using enough salt to taste like a brine.
@@mddell58 I haven’t tried it on tofu, but soaking meats prior to roasting makes most taste better. Salt will draw out moisture & some bitterness.
I am so glad I saw this video of hot and sour soup. This has to be one of my most favorite soup ever. I always have it in the restaurant. But maybe now I can make my own. Thank you so much. Your father is sweet.🦋
love a good H&S soup
I’ve been searching for a good hot & sour soup recipe and this one made delicious soup! Thanks for sharing!
Love these guys!!
Hot & Sour soup is my all time favorite in Chinese restaurants. I just love it! And now, thanks to you, I'll be able to make it at home!!
Awww enjoyed watching his son cooking with his Dad! Looks delicious!! Here is my bowl!! 🥣
You make all these recipes look so easy! I'll be trying this for sure. I made your fried rice, and it was the best I've ever eaten!
My #1?
Hot and Sour Soup!
Nice work, guys.
Hi folks. Hot and Sour has been my favorite for ages. The balance between hot and sour is remarkable. I generally like it in the hot side but always willing to see what the chefs provide. The Hunger Pangs are great fun and great chefs. A great wonton soup is also awesome. The Lion was brilliant. Thanks.
I really love a tart, hot and sour soup. I just happened upon your video and had to watch you two. I'm going to make this recipe soon, and I'll let you know how it goes. 😋 Thanks for the video. Oh. And dad Pang, good call on no restaurant. Lol😅
My mom made this soup a lot growing up. It was our favorite as well. Watching this video made me realize how I have not made this soup in a long time. Will have to make it soon.
I’ve always liked this soup and usually get it as a little side with the meal. Last night I got the large bowl as the main meal along with 2 spring rolls that came with sweet and sour sauce. When I got home I tested my blood sugar and it was only 109. Even after eating the sweet and sour sauce. I’m definitely going to learn how to make this soup at home. Great tutorial!
I love egg drop, but I think I will try this for my husband. Thank Pangs
Ps I love the 🦁
I love the instructions on getting the ribbons of egg. Genius!
Hot and sour soup has always been my favorite! Thanks for sharing your recipe.
Thank you! I've been waiting for this recipe! ^_^
I love seeing family cooking together
My favorite
Hot & Sour Soup has been a favorite forever! Our traditional Chinese restaurant closed & I haven’t had good Hot & Sour Soup since! Thank you 😊
I am in love with this!!!!
I love you guys so much....always entertaining and fun. I love hot and sour soup and didn't realize it was so easy to make! Will definitely be trying this at home....and NOT stirring the egg too much!! :D
I can't get enough of these two! 😁
Thank you ❤very cute father and son 😊
Thank you for this recipe!
Hot and sour soup is my favorite! Wonderful video!!!
My favorite soup! I can't wait to make this.
My favorite is hot and sour! I will definitely try your recipe. Thanks to you and your Dad. I so enjoy your videos
Both of you are incredible cooks and show hosts. I will be watching every episode! I think that many people want to learn Chinese cooking techniques and recipes, but feel intimidated by the difficulty, but somehow together you two help instill confidence in me. Plus, you’re both so cute and kind and wonderful. Thank you Kevin and Jeffrey
I've always loved Hot n Sour soup, and the place I most often bought it has changed the recipe or something. I'm not sure if they make it in house or if they get it already prepared and heat it up, but it used to be like a broth, and now it has a gelatin-like consistency and the flavor is not the same. I will definitely be trying this recipe in the hopes that I can make it at home now.
I ways WANT the jel consistency but none of the recipes on youtube make it that way
I’m definitely making this during the upcoming winter months.
I will try this recipe! Thank you for sharing!
This may come as a shock to some people, but my favorite soup is hot and sour soup with wontons. The broth that is used for wonton soup is in my opinion very Bland. My personal favorite way to eat wonton soup is to place the wontons from the wonton soup into a bowl of delicious hot and sour soup. Unfortunately, I have to do this at home because I have yet to find a Chinese restaurant here in Eastern Canada that will prepare me such a dish.
I always get hot & sour soup (and it’s a go to when I feel under the weather) - can’t believe how easy it is to make
Lol! My fav chefs!! I love sizzling rice soup!! Thank you!
I like so ton soup, I haven’t tried hot and sour soup but will give it a try. I love the hunger pangs! I’ve learned so much with you!! Thank you !!!
Dad looks so happy 😊
Mmmm there is nothing better when you have a cold than good hot and sour soup! This is a very straightforward and delicious sounding recipe, thanks.
