  • Bandli Maavu is a very traditional breakfast recipe in many of our Tamil Kitchen. The name states its a tangy upma made with Tamarind, Rice and Toor dhal. First we need to prepare the coarse paste with this three ingredients along with other Indian Spices. This upma tastes more like Puliyodarai or tamarind rice. We don’t need any accompaniment for this wonderful recipe. Since it has all flavor and spices for our taste buds, we can just serve plain or with toasted papad.

    O my God now I am 62 years old. My patti and my அம்மா made me to grind it in kallural when I was 13 years old. and the taste is very fantastic. THEN I FORGET the recipe and asked many of relatives. Now I am really stunned to see your video. We are native of சிதம்பரம் mayuram madhwa family. Thanks for the recipe

    We had a colleague from this place
    It is famous for its rasam!
    The whole village was famous for its Chefs and it would be a matter of prestige to have the chef from Nagayanalloor
    Amma will know all this ofcourse!

    I am from the neighboring village to Nagayyanallur. Every person in the village is a best cook. The Ramar of the village is a great Anugrahara moorthy.
    There is an Athishtanam of a sithar .
    They people celebrate all traditional function in its real style.
    Regarding making of Vanali Mavavu , pooli uppuma ,Banlimavu etc can be done by using rice flour also and without thuvar dall. My families favorite dish.
    Use good katti their (curd) as side dish.

      Me too my grandpa town where my father was born and brought up. He retired from next village called murangapatty. My entire family lived there now my brother is there. My grandpa used to come there for Rama navami as a priest from murungapatty. Now my brother is coming

      We come from the family of the sidhar u were talking about. My dad sincerely worked to bulid that adhistanam. But before it was completed he passed away.

    Hi, in our house we also do this with a slightly varied version. We grind everything except tamarind. Then let the batter ferment for 6-8 hours which would give the natural sourness to this dish. It was a dish frequently prepared while my grandma was with us. It is unfortunate that I was too young and did not have the curiosity to learn our traditional recipes while She was alive. This brings back so many memories. So warm seeing these videos.all the best

    In our house we prepare bandli maavu with white rava after shoked in skimmed sour milk and with wheat flour combined with tamarind water. It our mothers receipe

    Namaskaram. Even my native is Nagaiyanallur. Paati used to make this often. Another famous dish of Nagaiyanallur is Rasam.. please check and put that recipe as well..Glad to see so many people from native.

    My grandmother used to do something similar to this dish., named ad puli kozhakattai. She soaked arisi rava in tamarind juice.

    Mami, Namaskarams. I am also from that village. Happy to see our recipe done by you so interestingly. We youngsters at the age of 15 we used to do cooperately and enjoy this and adai also we make (கூட்டாக).We also do with onion.

    Lovely recipe. I learnt a new dish. Resembles our puli upma and adai combination. I liked that name pulisu pindi name given by one of our commentators. Must be a telugu dish.

    This is called pulusu pindi.
    We make it by adding fresh coconut also when grinding . A traditional Arya Vysya dish! Very tasty!
