Textured Vegetable Protein - Is Soy Protein (Vegan Meat) Healthy?

  • Dr. Klaper tells us his opinions about textured vegetable protein (TVP) or textured soy protein (TSP) as a suitable vegan protein. Meat alternatives have been around since the 1960's when it was invented. He cautions that fake meat is processed food and should be considered a novelty, not the main staple in your plant based diet. There are soy protein benefits but not to be eaten regularly.
Question: Is textured vegetable protein (TVP) a healthy way to get protein in your diet?

I use this about once a day as a way to save money. 300 grams of ground beef and half a bag of tvp and I can feed my family of 7 a delicious high protein meal for around $7!!! I do the same with chicken dishes too. Burritos, spaghetti bolognaise, the options are endless with this amazing product.

While TVP is processed, it's basically just made from defatted soy flour, and retains most of the water-soluble vitamins and minerals found it soybeans. It's good if you are on a low fat diet, and is a good alternative to many of the other meat analogues out there, that often have more fat. I use it alot in "chicken" vegetable soup and it works great.
Another good alternative is dried tofu, which has a similar texture but a grainier texture. Sometimes it is made with calcium, giving a calcium boost to the tofu.

Been vegetarian for over 10years. Buy soya chunks or minced, soak them with water salt pepper then use your favourite chicken or beef seasonings pakcets then cook it as. Microwave for when u dont have time. Its around 1$ for 500g. I dont recommend to consume more then couple times a week bc u dont need unless u r athelete but it does a better job that all frozen processed stuff that castrate you.

I was always told that fermented forms of soy were the only forms we should consume. Any thoughts? Isn’t soy hard on the thyroid? Seriously very interested.

What’s confusing me is how is this considered “healthy”. He started his statement with “This is a highly processed food”. And correct me if I’m wrong never stated it was “healthy”. People just hear what they want. Not healthy, not right that’s my take. Will not be eating this stuff.

    • @thorn.charmer

It's an ultra processed food stuff that is a byproduct of soybean oil production. They soak soybeans in a hexane bath to separate the fat from the protein. We already know that soybean oil is associated with numerous health risks like seed oils ... I don't know why anyone would consider a byproduct of something like that to be "healthy." I consider it about the same as I do ultra-processed mock meats. There are better choices out there.

Soy is the worst thing you can take in your body in todays age because soy is the n1 food that is GMO produced. So if you buy soy product in the store its most likely GMO. This soy is nothing like the soy that was consumed in Okinawa before ww2 that made soy popular to the western world. Also a question to dr. Klaper about genetic need for certain foods. I would appreciate a discussion on that topic.

GMO is only a new form of hybridization, almost 100% of foods eaten by humans for thousands of years are híbrida, so a GMO food is not necessarily bad, a research food by food must be done with independence of the origin of the food.
