    I remembered sparring a TKD 2nd degree black belt, i was a former boxer and we were both friends competing in a WKF tournament. We often sparred each other and I remembered how many solid kicks I received to the face just to let him practice his power control.
    It was easy for me to control my punches especially with my boxing background. And we were both white belts in shotokan karate that time and were both in different weight divisions. He won silver and I won bronze. He told me the belt is just a color and i laughed because there was no belts in boxing.

    Did Shotokan for 8 years .( many sparring hours )
    My fav move was my left foot hard kick to the opponents shin ,followed up with a right fist reverse punch .The shin kick stunned the guy ,so I could follow up with the reverse punch.Was a tough club ,with plenty of contact in kumite.

    Ive trained in both styles. Taekwondo and Shotokan karate. In my opinion, Karate teaches better habbits that translate more effectively to actual combat. I was always taught to never give up sure footing for a killing strike or a flashy one. And thats what taekwondo seems to do. Super flashy and beautiful kicks. But always off the ground and usually ends up as a fall. The karateca was blocking shots very well. Seemed to have managed distance more effectively and landed powerful shots that counted. He appeared less flashy but more effective with power being generated from the ground like a boxers punch in his strikes regardless what they were. He impressed me.

      That's what attracted me to join a ISKF Shotokan Dojo 34 yrs ago was their emphasis on the foundational techniques, not flashy Hollywood moves. Let's face it, hardening training with the makiwara, etc. isn't exactly flashy film material, unless it's a documentary or educational film...

      Just the lack of setting up lets me know they lack battle experience.
      Ive done karate since 8yrs old, and assure you that from my experience taekwondo has the strongest/most devastating kick of all martial arts... but you are right, any move, if done without setup or timing is practically useless.
      But its all part of training though, martial arts is to better one's self.
      I still prefer karate for some reason.

    It's hard to believe that those are two black belts. They're throwing a lot of punchs and kicks in the air, with zero notion about range. The one with black shoes seems a little scared. If they really are black belts, or the teacher is bad or they really don't care about training.

    • @kjtaekwondo6890
      @kjtaekwondo6890  6 років тому +4

      MrGabrielCac thank you for taking the time to comment. I will agree that this is not the best performance. It’s one of countless sparring sessions. If I remember correctly this session happened shortly after I was awarded 1st Dan. If you know anything about martial arts that’s still a pretty beginner rank. If I may ask? What is your martial arts style? How long have you been training ?

    • @MrGabrielCac
      @MrGabrielCac 6 років тому +3

      Oh, thank you for responding. I've been training goju-ryu karate for 10 years now and started to train WTF taekwondo about a year ago. I really understand that 1st dan is only the beginning of karate. For those who never practiced karate, when they see a black belt they think that this is the end of karate, when is where the real karate starts. My apologies if i sounded a little rude in my comment. Congratulations for what you've accomplished, i know how hard it is to stay focused on training. Whish you the best!

    • @ldgarius
      @ldgarius 3 роки тому

      They're not, you can see by how their belt is "tied" (and then you watch the sparring and confirm it). I'd like to think they're blue belts and it's the camera that doesn't get the color.

  • @Docinaplane
    @Docinaplane 6 років тому +3

    Initially I assumed that the fighter on the left was Shotokan and the right was TKD. With that in mind I felt that the Shotokan fighter was fighting at the TKD distance and since he doesn't close distance well he didn't look too effective. I kept waiting for him to reverse punch as the man on the right came forward, but he didn't. Then the man on the right assumed a more Shotokan style with a lower guard, so maybe he was not TKD. Then the man on the left started using more kicks. In my opinion, neither fighter uses their skills well and could use some training in application of the strong techniques they seem to have as well as how to use their hand strikes in combination with kicks, not just one or the other and in applying forward pressure. I make this comment, not to help them, but perhaps to help other viewers in their own martial arts journey.

    Hi. Nice video, thanks for that. I do not want to sound like that i want to give these fighters advice or teach them, but To give something to think about. There are many ways to get to the goal, if goal is 100, you get there by 2x50,99+1, 102-2, and so many other ways. The same applies to the sparring, In sparring you take it seriously or can i say little lighter. This looks like very light. They need to learn speed, distance, combinations, blocks, avoids and to make their front leg light so they can hang it more in the air. More exploding power. I have trained and compete in many martial arts since -89 I started with full contact karate aka kickboxing, then i practiced Hokutoryu ju-jutsu over 16y an these days i practice WTF-Taekwondo, Hapkido and Judo. I teach self defense for Taekwondo students. Boomsae is really not my thing, so i do not teach that at all. I have won many medals in past years, but i´m too old to compete any more, but i would like to share my knowledge and help if i can. For you two fighting guys, i don´t care your style or name of your style or is it taekwondo or not or karate or not. The most important thing is that if you fight, you are a fighter. Never think that you suck or something what someone might say to you. Do not care about that negative criticism just keep doing what you are doing and get better every day.

    just like father meet son.. Tae Kwon do originally has Shotokan Ryu influences.. because Tae Kwondo in the old time was founded by korean Students which studies and colleges in Japan and okinawa.. 1945 they come bac home to korea and teaching korean shotokan karate then mixed with korean and Chinese martial arts become KTA/ Korean Tang Soo Do tang soo Do = Korean karate.. then in 1945 General Choi Hong Hee united korean Kwans / martial arts academy and nationalized korean martial arts in to Tae Kwon Do with formed in ITF/ International Tae Kwon do Federation. in 1950 Korea separated in to the North and south then in 1970 after ITF move to Canada then World Tae Kwondo has Formed now in korea has 2 different Styles Tae Kwondo.. ITF and World Tae Kwon do.. ITF much more traditional ways of Tae Kwon do Style and WT much more to Olympic style.. but both of Tae kwon do Styles basically has the same origin

      disculpe pero yo también hago taekwondo (ITF específicamente) y el juego de pies del sujeto rubio es muy propio del TKD (el otro en cambio, tiene el juego de pies y la movilidad de un karateca, su posición de piernas es baja y abierta, sus desplazamientos son un poco lentos y no se para sobre el metatarso, sino sobre la planta del pie) eso es algo muy propio de los karatecas.

      3. No TKD (specially WTF) player would kick on or below waist (time 1.12, 1.47, 1.57).
      4. In TKD no one kick and retreat suddenly like that beard guy.
      5. That was not TKD fighting stance ( time 0.33)

    • @gilbertmanson1272
      @gilbertmanson1272 6 років тому +1

      Dibyajyoti Sarkar
      1. Yes, it is.
      2. Everyone needs to guard their face. Including him. People do that in taekwondo tournaments as well.
      3. The reason you don't see them kicking below the waist is because it is banned from tournaments. However, that does not mean they will not do it even if it is not forbidden. Low kicks are easier to do. So of course people will do it. Kicking below the waist also appears in forms. Heck, in Koryo Poomsae, there is even a section where you do a side kick to the knee. You are so narrow minded.
      4. OH MY GOD. Have you ever been to a tournament before? Everyone does that! It serves as a countermeasure just in case you miss your opponent when kicking.
      5. Who are you to decide what counts as a taekwondo stance? It depends on what works best for the fighter. Need more stability, they will use a wider stance. Need to increase kicking speed and agility, they will use a narrow stance. Don't go around saying what counts as a taekwondo stance because there is not a predefined way of doing your stance in sparring.
      6. Dude. This is a sparring session. They are training. Let them wear anything they like. Our dojang shares a training hall with the local karate club and my instructor trains in both. Sometimes he wears a gi if he forgot his dobok or his dobok is not dry yet during training session with us. It does not matter what type of attire you're wearing. As long as you wear the correct one in formal events such as grading or tournament. Also, keep in mind that ITF style taekwondo has both vertically closing front jacket (newer design) and cross-over front jacket similar to a karate gi. So maybe he is wearing the latter.
      I advise you to be more open-minded. We're all martial artist at the end of the day. :)

      This was one year after I received my black belt in American Tae Kwon Do, I have only been training for three years . Give me 14 more years and I'll improve. The other black belt has been training for nearly a decade and is an international competitor in Shotokan. with only 3 years experience , by definition I guess that makes me an amateur.
