There are ways of disguising when you are switching stance, such as when you kick is already a good time to change stance with a follow-through, which you can support with a jab or backfist from your front hand.
A very interesting match sensei! He moves very fast and has powerful kicks! But I noticed that you were surprised several times and I don't blame you. Taekwondo kicks, especially those that focus on the head (like the ax kick for example) are very "irregular" and with many variations, and I think that's fantastic! You had several chances to counter attack as well, but he was very quick to approach to clinch and not give you the opportunity to counter punches (But I saw that you tried several well positioned gyakus). It was certainly a fantastic experience to watch, congratulations to everyone involved! Ps: I am a red karate belt (Uechi Ryuu) and a blue taekwondo belt (WTF).
This was so fun. It's smart you are challenging other styles. Most people are too used to sparring with one style. You will never know when you encounter someone, what kind of attacks he will throw at you. It's good that you see other styles and see what to do next.
You can really see the difference between ITF taekwondo and WTF taekwondo by the position of the hands when sparing I feel ITF gives a little more attention to hands than it's WTF counter part does
Pause at 6:44 . If this is MMA, I would have duck my head and do single takedown, posture up, then perform a combination of hammer first and elbow strikes 😂. But still, Karate and Taekwondo fighters are fun to watch. I enjoyed the breakdown of this video.
@@Samperor That’s why it is much more fun watching two different martial arts fighter fighting. Just like UFC back in the early 90s, beautiful. The fighters are expert in their respected martial art.
Also, regarding switching stances. If you do it VERY quickly, it can freeze your opponent for a moment. Some 15+ years ago, there was an event at the Shotokan Ohshima Dojo in Santa Barbara, California. Mr. Ohshima had the Karate Club from Waseda University attend, lead by Mr. Ono. At the end of the practice, there was a Jiyu Kumite competition between the U.S. guys and the Waseda Club, refereed by Mr. Ono. The Waseda guys were doing very well and punching very hard (you could hear the impact from 20 feet away). Then Mr. Ohshima selected a U.S. competitor for the final bout, Dusty DePree. He was a young Brown Belt competing against a Waseda Black Belt (He also happened to be the son of one of my old teachers-a VERY dangerous fighter.). Every time Dusty sensed the Waseda guy ready to attack, Dusty would just switch his stance and the Waseda guy would freeze and try to come up with a new strategy. It happened over and over again and then Dusty would attack as soon as his opponent would freeze and he ended winning the match against the Black Belt.
Very great experience to pay them such a visit. You really reminded me of such an experience. I made changes to my training afterwards. Example is, I mostly kick twice before a reverse punch.
Love this! I take every opportunity to travel and try out different styles of Kicking and Punching in different formats. Sparring is an excellent way to try out a resisting opponent. I'm a black belt in TKD (WTF & ITF styles), a Kickboxing & Muay Thai Coach and a Bujinkan senior Instructor. So far I've tried Karate (Shotokan, Kyokushin and Goju), Capoeira, Combat Sambo, Pankration, JKD, Savate, Silat and Boxing. Love all the different styles 😻
I want to say you did a good job as someone not know much about Taekwondo kicks that you avoided going in at the worse timing for a readied back kick which is probably the most brutal and deadly counter back kick that can come from someone in taekwondo. It is seriously a kick meant to K.O. the oppoment in 1 hit immediately upon impact.
When I started training in TKD in the 80's, there was a black bet(6th dan, I think) who was of a strong build but he could jump, flip and fly with ease. Another roughly the same grade could land on the wooden floor as skilfully as a cat. It was impressive and awe inspiring to watch.
Both MA are great. My 8 year old son started taekwondo itf last month. When I was young I also trained taekwondo. I finished with 1 kup. If he doesn't like taekwondo I will show him karate or ju-jitsu. But for now he is ok with taekwondo. Training is intensive and he likes it.

That was great. That last kick to the head was amazing.
What I like most bout this fight is the courage of the karateka
Great to see martial artists treat each other with respect. Old ways of ego and pride need to die out fast.
having trained in karate and taekwondo + judo this is amazing!
Very cool. I remember the Japanese team we met in Spain at the World Cup and we all played volleyball. Fun times....
Love it Amazing Match , Great to see Open Minded Martial Artist Like you , Success
I studied Taekwondo when I was a kid and I loved it. Some of the moves felt like you were flying :)
Man really commend you for exploring other martial arts and putting yourself out there! Nicely done
Which martial art should I spar next?
Kickboxing(k1)
Try visit Kyokushin dojo
Kyokushin Kai
Japanese jujutsu!
Wing chun
First class fascinating insight from a clearly honest and expert martial artist
Exactly ☺️
It's making my karate stronger too :)
Yes
Really cool to hear your breakdown, strategy, technique here. Thanks for posting!
I like how clearly you are able to analyze and explain it simply so it’s easy to understand. 🥋
I love how you get involved in this martial arts journey
Every martial art teaches us to know about new ideas and trick to counter back
i noticed that the shoto guys eyes dont flinch when he gets hit...that impresses me more than anything else i see here....
As a shotokan Orange belt and now current ITF yellow belt I really admire your work Sensei.
You can really see the difference between ITF taekwondo and WTF taekwondo by the position of the hands when sparing I feel ITF gives a little more attention to hands than it's WTF counter part does
I am a taekwondo player black belt. Respect karate do. Nice video thanks.
The huge amount of kick a tae kondo praticer can do is impressive
I really enjoyed this video because the live sparring was awesome.
Very insightful self-review and self-correction.
Pause at 6:44 . If this is MMA, I would have duck my head and do single takedown, posture up, then perform a combination of hammer first and elbow strikes 😂. But still, Karate and Taekwondo fighters are fun to watch. I enjoyed the breakdown of this video.
It's very easy to say while watching, but during the spar, it is hard to react since you are face towards him.
@@Samperor That’s why it is much more fun watching two different martial arts fighter fighting. Just like UFC back in the early 90s, beautiful. The fighters are expert in their respected martial art.
Thats easy for you to say. If he looks fast on camera, he'll seem 20x faster in real time.
Always good to analyze your bouts. You both have a lot to work on!
That was cool watching you spar. Great footwork.
Very great experience to pay them such a visit. You really reminded me of such an experience. I made changes to my training afterwards. Example is, I mostly kick twice before a reverse punch.
wow. that champion really moves with great balance and control.
Love this content. I’m a huge fan of traditional martial arts. It doesn’t have to be all MMA
Persevere. Perseverance through and Honor. Academic.
When I started training in TKD in the 80's, there was a black bet(6th dan, I think) who was of a strong build but he could jump, flip and fly with ease. Another roughly the same grade could land on the wooden floor as skilfully as a cat. It was impressive and awe inspiring to watch.
That was a great video. I was a Taekwondo student many years ago. If I was young and strong today, I would prefer Taekwondo over other styles.
Fabulous sparring! Thank you for the video man. I would love to visit Japan soon ❤
