  • In this video guide, I talk through every badge, pin and patch seen on Ace’s jacket from Dragonfire (1987) to her most recent appearance in The Power of the Doctor (2022). I also talk about the history and meaning behind some of the badges, pins and patches and where you can find them to complete your own cosplay jacket.
Ace McShane (played by Sophie Aldred) is a companion to the Seventh Doctor (played by Sylvester McCoy) in classic Doctor Who.

A big thank you to Dom Green who’s cosplay guides were really useful when doing the research for this video. He also creates and sells replicas of some of the badges so do reach out to him if you want to get hold of some. You can see all of the guides here: domgreendesign.uk/cosplay-guides
A big thank you to Lee Binding supplying some of the high res images of Ace featured in this video. There were a few badges left to identify and the pictures were really helpful.
Some of the badges and patches seen in this video are available from ‘TheMadameNostradamus’ on Etsy. Be sure to check our their shop! www.etsy.com/uk/shop/TheMadam...

Have you cosplayed Ace? Thinking of giving it a go? Let me know!

I could’ve done with this video a few months ago when I was making it to wear for The Power of the Doctor 😂😂
The irony that you made this, when I was using your cosplay as as a starting point is so funny. You can’t write that. I think I tagged you on Twitter when I made it cos I was so pleased with the final result!
Have you updated yours since the cosplay you did for Doctor Who Magazine?

@@MrCdawson17 That's so epic! Would love to see it - what's your Twitter handle? I've replaced some of my badges with Dom's replicas and I have a replica of Flowerchild's earring on the way from the US from Etsy. I also updated the Villiers pin to a more accurate looking one 🙂

I’ve cosplayed Ace twice now with my replica jacket and most recently I actually met Sophie while wearing it! She was very lovely and complimented my replica :) I also got to talk to her a bit about the jacket and if I’m right she knows about this video and might be in touch soon 👀 She sort of suggested augmenting the already comprehensive guides for Ace cosplayers with some correct first hand info about what sort of pins and badges are actually on the jackets!

I like to think that each pin on Ace's jacket is a trophy from someone whose butt she kicked.

Holy moley, as soon as I saw the names "McNair, Onizuka, Resnik, Scobee..." my jaw dropped. Had no idea this particular mission patch was the one right over Ace's heart. 💜
I went to the same school as Judy Resnik.

So great to see you back doing Who content. Ace is my favorite as well. And as a Rudie way back then, the bomber jacket always struck a chord with me. Sounds like a cool project. I think I’ll get started. Even if it winds up just hanging on the Coat Rack instead. - I know these are a lot of work and I know the algorithm doesn’t push eclectic channels very well. But I think it’d be cool to see some Pet Shop Boys content as well.

No, I have not cosplayed as Ace, but yes, she is my numero uno Companion and, if you ask me, one half of the best TARDIS team in the whole wide Whoniverse. Just wanted to give props for the tremendous effort, and now that the dust has settled on Power of the Doctor, here's hoping our explosive baseball bat weilding companion makes a few more appearances down the road.

I love everything about this video - thank you.
I hadn’t realised she wears the approach and landing test program patch - very apt since the shuttle (Enterprise) was named for the ship from that other sci fi show. It’s a shame that shuttle was never refitted for space flight as had been planned.
The ‘mess with the best, die like the rest’ pin is intriguing. The red beret is the iconic look of the British parachute regiment; the rifles have the distinctive carry handle and foresight of the M16, a quintessentially American weapon. Presumably the costume department found this on a London stall, but the design invites many questions.

The three Shuttle flight badges (excepting the SALT badge on the sleeve), represented what were, at the time, the last three shuttle missions. I hadn't realized, until you pointed it out, that two names had each been excluded from the versions on the jacket. NASA had stopped trying to get all of the names in a single ring for a while, mission #20 was the last - and especially the D-1 mission, which had 8 Astronauts on board, for the first Spacelab mission sponsored by then-West Germany. The omissions are a little sad to me - STS-61-B (mission #23), Atlantis, included the first Astronaut from Mexico, Rodolfo Neri Vela. He was represented with the Mexican flag and "Neri" on the full badge. STS-61-C omits the two who only flew that one time on Columbia: Robert Cenker, and then-Congressman Bill Nelson. Nelson was the first House member to fly on a Shuttle, and second member of Congress. Senator Jake Garn from Utah having been the first, on mission #16. And finally, the 51-L badge, Challenger's last flight. The cut omits Christa McAuliffe and Gregory Jarvis.
Shuttle flights did not resume until STS-26, in 1988. Outside of the USSR, the Shuttle Program were the only missions launched with humans on board from 1981-1986 - each flight had a unique patch, unlike some of the Soviet missions, and the multiple colors embroidered into each were probably considered more telegenic. Also, while the hammer and sickle badges were easy to reproduce, how easy/difficult would it have been to get the Soviet Space Program badges to the U.K. of 1987?

Awesome video. I don't think that they'll ever be an accurate and well detailed video into something as niche as the design of Ace's jacket in Doctor Who. :) Very well done. Still, a pity that there was no 'magic pencil' design somewhere on her jacket for when the Seventh Doctor dropped her off into some TV studio in the 90's to teach children to read in an attempt to bamboozle more Daleks before bashing them with a baseball bat again. LOL.

I have always been puzzled by the eye-within-a-horseshoe S.B.I./B.S.I. patch. Every other patch, pin and button badge I could identify - or had confidence I would identify given time and a little luck. But the ‘Baker Street Irregulars’ patch was always an enigma for me. For a long time, I speculated that ‘SBI’ might be a take on ‘FBI’, i.e. the Space Bureau of Investigation, perhaps? That might have been fitting. I’m more than happy to be corrected on that point! Thank you for this video, Christel. It must have taken ages. You have produced the definitive video on Ace’s jacket. Good job.

Wow, this is incredibly thorough: really well done!
Just a thought, but at 3:15, that "Lee" on the "Ace Roofing Co" patch seems weirdly off-centre. Maybe it was originally "Ace Roofing Co, Leeds"? Those extra two letters would make it much more central.

I grew up on Doctor Who. I was too young for the first 2 Doctors, but started watching it with my older brother in the last 2 seasons of Dr #3 and I kept watching it through Dr #4 (perhaps my favorite) and through Dr #6. However, I couldn't stand that 7th Doctor. He was just too weird, too out-of-character with that stupid hat, and his humor sucked. I thought Ace was weird too. Perhaps, if she would have been with another doctor, it might have helped.
