Malaska Golf // Pro Tip - Get Your Hips Out of the Way // Nicklaus, Flick Golf Swing

- Let's take a look at how your hips work away from the ball to make room for your hands at impact. I've worked with Jack Nicklaus and Jim Flick for many years and you can learn a lot from how these savants "feel" their hip movement.

Getting hips back and out of the way. Great lesson. Thanks Mike
I’ve seen hundreds of golf instruction videos, and I’ve come back to this over and over, the best golf advice video ever made. Sent to all my friends, can’t overstate how incredibly spot on this video is in every way.
Thanks Scott! Appreciate you spreading the word about Malaska Golf.

I have like 4 month into golf . Came from a baseball swing but like 35 years ago without touching a bat. I’m 55 years old . I hit the ball decently for my short experience but i want to improve as much as my body permits . Being said this I’ve been watching styles , ways of swinging the club, shortcuts to learn as fast as I can but I’ve rejected taking lessons from teachers since I’m a negationist of traditional teaching until what they teach make sense to me . I m a self-tough in many things and golf is not a exception . I have trashed out all UA-cam and personal teachers since I’ve discovered Malaska. You have to support your ideas with facts and Malaska does it. Now I have a much better swing , more comfortable one, more effective and more natural. Thanks to These videos I’m learning as fast as I’ve ever wanted . Everything makes sense. Thanks John!!
Great video. I just purchased the m-series golf instruction on your site and the content is amazing! BTW way you are 100% correct in tapping into Mr Nicklaus swing. I still putt the same way he did and with great accuracy/feel!
These words of wisdom are more helpful than 99 percent of instructions online.
I am really working on this. I'm 67 but work on my game daily. Thanks so much Mike for common sense. Not easily found in golf instruction.
I'm getting a lot better and easier understanding the real concepts and proper moves of my body in the golf swing now I'm enjoying the game more, thanks.
Fantastic analysis and video! Extremely helpful.
Excellent way of describing the “rotation”. I noticed an instant difference when doing this.
This is just brilliant stuff! Nice and simple. Terrific instruction!
Superb, this is what I was looking for
Never get tired listening to you, every time I revisit the videos, I learn something new. Thank you so much.
I especially like the way that you describe what you are teaching in easy to understand terms. Thank you.
Mike that was awesome video. Tried to restrict my right hip for years . This whole X factor thing just messed up my back. Golf is ending here but I’m joining your web site and looking forward to more great video over the winter . Gotta get to Florida and attend your golf school this spring.
Fantastic
Thank you Mike
Just tried this, and it really works well, many thanks ! I've been concentrating too much on the "follow through " !!
Nicklaus is a good player…understatement of the century
Watching and listening to Mike, I came up with this thought just before I swing and it's Relax, right shoulder back. I'm hitting much better, i.e. longer and way more consistent than ever before.
Great golf education Mike, I’ve gone from paralysis through analysis to a single figure handicap since following your instruction. Thanks Mike keep it up.
Congrats! I am still in the paralysis stage of my golf journey.
We’re you an over the topper? If so, what Malaska drills helped the most?
marvellous information
To back this up, saw Greg Norman in a video recently say that his swing thought was "right pocket back".
Excellent
Thank you
Follow-thru vs. Lead-thru. Interesting. I feel my swing suffers the consequences of the Lead-thru swing when I attempt to start my downswing with my legs. And conversely, all my friends criticize my swing when I start my downswing with my arms as Mike shows with the Follow-thru downswing. I am so confused. Signed “caught between a rock and a hard space”
I know what you mean. I have a bad habit of tugging my lead shoulder to start the downswing. The way Mike shows it, it is more a follower of the arm coming down. But it makes sense in terms of inside approach, no? What I mean is if the lead shoulder is making the first move, the it has to lead to over the top, right?
love this
Thanks Mike, I have gained 10 to 15 yards in my irons, my swing dynamics are looking great, besides, there is a balance achieved at the finish of Swing...I don't know whether I'm doing it correctly, still the above changes are making a big difference to me , thanks a lot !!!
Mike, love your stuff. Can you please post a link to the Tiger UA-cam video you reference at 2:37? I heard you mention what Tiger said on a recent Be Better Golf video and I’m interested in hearing exactly how Tiger describes this hip move. Thanks!
Hi mike very good explanation of getting the hips back out of the way
Along the lines of mike tomasuto (excuse the poor spelling) the body follows pulled thru
Thanks for confirming this totally confused point the downswing
Kind regards bill from Mildura Australia
MIKE MALASKA - I've been watching your videos for about 2.5 yrs and they've dramatically improved my understanding of the game. My question, though, is this: One of the first videos I saw of yours was a video that involved the grip, where you say the left hand should be placed on the club in a natural way...mine being in a stronger position. With the teachings in your recent videos of the right hand/arm movements, wouldn't a stronger left hand hinder the correct path of the right? Wouldn't you want your left hand to mirror the right so it can fold correctly and not impede the right hand's movement? Thanks in advance...Ryan Jacobs / Clearwater, FL
Thanks Mike ! I'm 72 and 5'4" and when you put a driver in my hands it is hard to get a visual when everyone you are attempting to mimic is a head taller. I get "hands come in and club goes out" and it works beautifully with by shorter clubs but I have been throwing the longer clubs over the top because I was getting stuck behind my right hip and attempting to rotate my hips to generate speed ! My dad would say "son, the harder you try the behinder you get" ;-)
I’ve been playing with this thought and definitely seeing improvement. What do you think of the feel of pull your hips BACK in the downswing. I find it makes it less daunting thinking of timing the left and right hips. I just pull hard back with my abs and hips and it seems to generate a lot of power.
Great video, Mike! Thanks! I have a big problem having always been taught and played for 50+ years restricting my hips. Now that I'm older, "70", I get "stuck" in my downswing. I have to get my right hip out of the way early in order not to "get stuck".
I'm 62 and in the same boat Greg. I think I ruined my right hip and had a lot of back pain because I saw the guys on the PGA tour 'resist' with the lower body. All the old guys on the PGA tour that had long careers lifted the heel. What's the expression: "Too soon old, too late smart?"
5:15- I absolutely set out to copy Jack’s putting stroke and it’s so much easier for me than modern square putting. His vertical swing with lots of leg drive I can’t imagine swinging that way.
InstaBlaster.
Mike, please explain how one can make the hips work relaxed and still push the hips backwards as you mentioned in one of your older videos. Big fan, thanks for your contributions!
Because your leg pushes your hip backwards. You're not actually using your hips, therefore the surrounding muscles stay relaxed.
haha I love that comment Jack is a pretty good player xD
You are 100 % right .... Learn to laterally move then you have a perfect rotational golf swing 👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
Great stuff Mike! There's a lot to be said for feel the weight of the club head. With your concepts of getting the club in front of you as soon as possible and feeling the weight of the cub head, your body will react correctly to the club and follow. As soon as you start pulling and manipulating, you're in trouble. Thanks for your great instruction and insights.
If your focus is on sending energy to the taget and not the ball, then the body will get out of the way.. bet Jack didnt focus on the ball. Great videos... love your content. Cheers from denmark
good video , i was pushing straight on my left leg and i was getting stuck
That in-video banner: "Jack Nicklaus is full of golf knowledge"
Ya reckon?!
Mr.Malaska funny thing I was trying different ways to relieve the pressure off my lower back and right hip thinking there has to be away of using the hips without twisting and turning.I did here that Tiger wants to get deeper in his hips so I stood in my golf stance let the right hip go back on the backswing and let the left hip go back on the downswing.I could not believe it...noway it could be that simple.Lets see whats on line about that.Well your tip came up and ..WOW...Is this really true all the years of me twisting, turning and spinning and putting strain on my back and ready to give up the game.Now... I can't wait to get out there and try this move.I'm praying that this is not another band aid solution for me.And yes if it worked for Jack...??
Thank you ....
Blues1 - did this work for you?
So true...
Another thing about Nicklaus is how long he stood over a putt before making the stroke. He had incredible patience on the greens.
I’ve been reading Greg Norman’s books and he mentions more than once his swing thought he named ‘RPB’ which meant RIGHT POCKET BACK to him. He also talks about having weight at address going mostly through your heels as opposed to on the balls of your feet which most instructions seems to advocate today. Your thoughts Mike?
Nicholas, I've been on the same thought track in the last week after a range experiment recently. It seems I am now almost heaving the club back with the hip move of RPB. It has the advantage of not introducing any tension into the backswing. It's great to get a full, deep turn with no added tension. Then the downswing is merely a gravity move. Have you noticed same?
@@Yoohoo2949 yep. And it makes it a lot easier to have the feel of taking the club ‘outside’ and then being able to shallow in transition
My hands moving to fast pulling down. At impact hips shoulders square need some leg work drills to open hips shoulders up while having club still lagging with out comming over top.
Very interesting, One thought, Some top players were a different breed, sometimes they were good despite their technique, I watched Patrick Ewing, in a suit, with hus wrong hand, sink a 3 pointer one handed, I think Nicklaus could putt whatevet way with a hockey stick and still be brilliant.

"use it. jacks a pretty good player" lol. You have a quite a few videos that cover this hip movement concept. It would be nice if you grouped them together b/c it's nice to hear you talk about it multiple times and then see you apply it with different drills and different people.
What is the move i should use to clear left hip?
What would you recommend for someone with a right hip subluxation?
@Stefan Pete Sorry not going to happen
Having big troubles hitting it thin. Suggestions?
I tried open stance putting today, it gave me more sight of the line and my stroke travelled on straight line with almost zero open and close of the putter face.
The result is great, you guys should try it out .
I love watching video footage of the top golfers from the 50's 60's and 70's. Players nowadays are to mechanical. IMO.
What about starting with your right hip back at setup. Then just turn your torso.
amazing how little attention is given to what the right and left hip should be doing in the golf swing. I look at what Hogan does. Right hip goes back and stays back. then, his left hip moves back to start his down swing. so that's what I think about. I move my right hip back and keep it back. then I move my left hip back and try to get it back into the same "depth" position as my right hip. it works well. if a player moves his right hip back and then fires it forward closer to the ball on the down swing he is going to have nothing but trouble. if the right hip moves closer to the ball on the down swing the club head is going to move closer to the ball as well ... and this will most likely lead to a shank. also, the pelvis should be positioned under the spine not sticking out. as close to straight up and down posture works best with the spine and pelvis in line with each other.
In your discussion of how or when the right hip move I actually saw you rock your pelvis back and forth. Actually the best players in the world rock their pelvis and rock their shoulders 1 second back and then on second forward; both in sequence and working together. The hip sockets and shoulder sockets never gets tense when they do this combo move. Try it I promises it works. Put a little Elvis in your swing and rock your pelvis and shoulders together. Cheers
Your accent sounds like you may be from Utah? Any chance that’s correct?
If your foot work is right the rotation is automatically going to be right weight to the inside of feet and finish over left leg. Once the weight moves to outside of you foot your dead, and your balance will suffer.
I might need my hips later on. I will keep them right where they are.
Love your videos but some of them like this one is hard to hear. More volume please, I'm 70! Thxs for tips.
Basically the secret to hit and having contact with the ball like the pros.
Golf is a feel game. It's the only way I can equate a golf swing. I have to feel Q's and triggers.
Tiger and jack were both open on putts and most shots. I’ve always copied both of them.
Pure waffle !
Voice is so low
Hi! I think you need some camera training. You cannot record videos with the light coming in from thr wrong side. It’s like watching a ghost speaking out of the dark. I’m afraid your message does not come through the way you would want it to. And it’s not only you, this goes for all golf youtubers. Videos are terrible. Sometimes you get lucky and the light comes from the correct direction, but this is just by coincidence. We will train on your instructions if you promis to get some video training😎
Björn Hansson sorry, what was the name of your UA-cam channel?
Lol
Everyone, golf is not that hard. It’s really not. If you find yourself needing hours and hours of instruction, dozens of lessons, videos, tips, products, etc., guess what: golf is not for you! Try something else like painting, or bird watching.
I tried painting birds, but couldn’t catch one to paint.
Spoken like a true bogey golfer.
Jack N. was not even in the top 10 best putters. He was long iron master.
