    They were called 'Coal Tanks' because they were derived directly from the 0-6-0 'Seventeen Inch Coal Engines' -- which were very successful in hauling heavy goods trains. Unfortunately there was a design weakness in the tank engines' brake-gear which made them unsuitable for loose-coupled goods trains, so they were in fact usually seen on local passenger trains.
    As to the finish, LNWR shed crews were only allowed to use hot water to clean their locos, with a little oil for stubborn grime -- no chemicals or detergents at all -- so unpainted fittings and hand-rails were simply polished mild steel and brass. But boy were they polished! It's also interesting to note that Webb's smokeboxes were painted exactly the same as the boiler barrels; but the much greater heat of the smokeboxes inevitably meant that the varnish there tended to burn off, and give them a slightly different appearance.
    And despite one comment below, Francis Webb was never knighted. He is, though, considered one of the more successful British locomotive engineers, renowned mainly for simplicity of design and economy of construction.

      This has probably already been answered, so sorry if I’m repeating stuff, but the coal tank is in preservation on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, near where I live and is one of my favourite locos on the railway, it always looks so shiny 😄

    I purchased one of these last year from Rails of Sheffield which was of the preserved example and it looks lovely. I can't wait to run it. I however have been on a train hauled by the real loco when it visited the Severn Valley Railway and the did a lovely double header with resident GWR 0-6-0 saddle tank loco 813 and they both looked great together.

    In the 1950s the survivors were spread out in location. Small groups were in Wales (WR) 10 at Abergavenny {86K} with 6 at Swansea Victoria & Tredegar {87K}. A group of 7 were kept at (LMR) Edge Hill {8A}

    Hey Sam, the math doesn’t add up on the rankings! The Webb with a score of 7 should have be above the LMS 10000, since that has a score of 6.

    Beautiful model Sam and it’s a model of the preserved example! It’s hard to understand why only one was preserved considering how many were built! Still, as long as one is preserved, we should all be happy! Also the owners hope to have its overhaul completed in time next year for the 100th anniversary of the merger of the LNWR and L&YR on January 1st!

    Hi Sam, thanks as usual for a splendid review. I bought one of them in the LNWR livery, after viewing your first review. I have been very happy with it and really appreciate Bachman producing an Era 2 locomotive in it’s original pre-grouping livery. I think the Victorian/Edwardian era locomotives are really splendid. I only wish the manufacturers always would produce engines in their pre-grouping liveries, if they had such liveries. The Hornby J15 is a perfect example. The engine dates from the 1880s and would look lovely in Great Eastern black and especially in Great Eastern Ultramarine Blue, lined in red. Greeting from beautiful East Texas. Stay safe and stay healthy.

    Fair review. I have this one myself and even though its freight predominantly, it doesn't look too out of place behind the BR Crimson 6-wheelers from Hornby. I think its just the combination of black locos with red coaches; always works.

    Nice to see a trend towards stronger Bachmann mechs. Sam, it's well and good that you drive locos slowly over the expess points, but I'd like to see the locomotives perform through the express points, that is from the middle to outer and back again. This might showcase how well, or not, the pickups behave to lateral forces.

    Very cool that you re-did that one. On top of that the one I ordered arrived the day that you released this video. I opened mine while watching it and looked at the details while you pointed them out. Keep up the good work.
    If I may make a suggestion, it would be nice to have reviews of old stuff also just for a change once in a while. You could take the time to compare it to a modern equivalent and have a different rating like you had before for them. There is value for new people to get the old stuff and with railroad stuff that re-release old models from time to time, the old hornby and triang stuff can be surprisingly relevent!

      It's a great looking loco in real life as well. It really suited the Severn Valley Railway when it came to visit. Another interesting loco similar to this is the Taff Vale Railway '01' 450 and '02' 85 tank engine's. They are very similar to the Webb Coal Tank engines and built in the same era but were only built in Wales to run on the Taff Vale Railway before the Great Western Railway purchased the railway and the Loco's.

    Have to say mate, I love mine. Got her for 70 quid all in with real coal posted by my mate who basically bought it and never ran it. Agree about the 3-pole and the flywheel debacle, but in truth I didn’t even notice (never had reason to open her up! 🤷🏻‍♂️). Runs like a dream smoothly and quietly. 9:58 hey Sam I'm pretty sure those buffers are the diesel's and they are so big they are covering 1054's.
    You can see the rivets on the back of the buffer holding the bigger part on.
    As well it would make sense as they are centered to the diesel rather than being offset on 1054.
    Also if you take a look at the back of 1054 the buffers are the same size as the model's.

  • @OlivierGabin
    @OlivierGabin 3 роки тому +1

    Agreed with you overall. I've got the LMS version, and it is a decent engine at a nice price. I think the mecanism is good, but not exploited fully due to a substandard motor (3 poles and no flywheel). Put a 5 poles with flywheel in her, and you'll have a great puller. As is, she's decent, but the lack of good slow speed performance is a thorn in your side when you want to use her on branchline duties outside running from A to B (lots of shunting at every station if you run her on a pick-up train). I also agree with you on the plasticky parts, same in brass would have been great, and not added much more pounds to the pricetag.
    Other thing, I have received my Bachmann 94xx, the first batch from Gaugemaster with my GWR and my BR5 versions. With your video in mind, I took my magnifier and looked carefully to the areas where you had spotted botched finish on your own. Luckily, those were fine on my two first ones. Running test was also OK for the BR5, and is OK for the GWR (ongoing while I'm writing this now). Special mention to the firebox glow, impressive while running in a rooom with dimmed lights ! As you, outside the finish, I find that the 94xx are too speedy for shunting and banking engines. A more demultiplicated drivetrain with half the speed would have been fine.
    Seems you are a magneet for botched finished engines... Anyway, you are right to point that, because if you, as an expert, get an engine with a botched finish, the average John Smith can have the same kind of problem, anf that is not good for everyone.
    Keep on the good job done, it is always a pleasure to watch you. Cheers from France !

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 роки тому

      Thanks a lot for sharing Oliver, agreed, a new motor would do wonders really! Great to hear your 94xx was much better, even though they are a touch speedy!

    i am so glad Sam went back in time to look at some older ones.
    recently i am on wave of very old vehicles, you know the Fiat S76, Stephenson's Rocket, that ilk of vehicles (even tho nearly century apart they share certain glamour, nigh intoxicating love for mad ideas and speed. in car from 2000s onwards you never realy get to experience it even at its top speed but in car from 1900s you can fear for your life at walking speeds!)
    i wonder if someone is making 2-2-0 Planet or Le Belge or basicaly anything from around the rocket's era. Just wondering if my hopes to see full history of marvelous mad machines could ever come into play.

    Hi Sam, I have the LMS version of this and it is DCC fitted. It performs better at slow speed than on DC. My only problem is with the trailing wheels which are prone to derailing occasionally in reverse as the axle is not precisely held but floats from side to side and has some radial movement up and down also. However, I agree that it s a really nice model. Keep up the good work!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 роки тому

    Awesome review on the Webb Coal Tank by Bachmann! I think I’ve seen you did a review on this locomotive before, but I’m assuming you’re redoing it to make it better! I like the 0-6-2 wheel configuration on this locomotive although the mechanism ruins this locomotive a little bit but everything else is pretty solid. I’m gonna give this a C+.

On DCC, both are spectacular runners. The buffers are standard Webb buffers, the safety valve does not go through to the cab, this shows the as built version. I have a video of mine on my youtube channel.

    Balance/counter weights on the whe sets.....the weight should be in the same place on the front and rear driving wheels. It will be in a different place on the centre driving wheelset as this is the crank axle, so on the real thing, that is drive axle as it were, its axle connected via the valve gear to the pistons. The weight has to be in a different place as it is to counter balance the crank/big end in between the frames. Whereas the balance weights on the front and rear wheels are just there to counter balance the coupling rods.
    It is the same on most other steam locos, especially the inside cylinder/valve gear variety.

    Hey Sam. Not about this video, but I have a question. All my modern Hornby steam locos have small couplings on them, most of my rolling stock has larger couplings, and when you shunt and connect the 2 only one of the hooks attaches. I can manually hook the second one on to the smaller one by bending it which doesn't feel right. What's the normal method here? Remove one of the hooks? Manually connect the second? Or just allow it to connect with the the one and leave the other wobbling about? Does that make sense?

    • @SamsTrains
