I think Hornby, along with their various brands; Corgi, Airfix and Scalextric, are already in trouble. Just over a year ago they appointed none other than Lyndon Davies, the owner of Oxford Diecast/Rail, as their CEO, most likely as his company has been going from strength to strength whereas Hornby Hobbies has been in decline for some time. This most likely being a desperate attempt to get the company back in the game. As far as I know however the two companies are still completely independent of each other.
@@mitchellhogg4627 Yeah the reason why I think hornby is trash is because I bought a frame for a Gresley teak and it arrived in an envelope smashed and broken. Then when I ordered another one one of the tool boxes fell off in the box. To me that screams JUNK!
Hi Sam. I have just bought this loco in early BR Black from Hattons, for a mere £98! I wanted this loco in the BR livery to haul some of my BR coaches. I was persuaded by your very favourable review to get one. I am sure I won't be disappointed. Thanks, Pete.
Hi Sam, thank you for your response to my comment. One point I failed to mention was that I had placed an order for an Oxford N7 and cancelled it months later in favour of a different machine. Following your glowing report on the N7, I feel I now need to reinstate the order super quick to ensure I get delivery of the locomotive. I thank you for your excellent work that enables a decision on what to, and what not to buy.
Hi Sam. I know I am a GWR fanATIC, but I totally agree with your assessment of this model and OXFORD rail. The detail on this beauty is phenomenal and the price is too good to ignore; even I am struggling with the temptation to buy one, even though I am still waiting for my steam railmotor to appear in a few months' time. Excellent video as always. Keep up the good work.
First review of 2019 and I believe the first using that lapel mic as the main thing to record audio - sounds great! Not that your reviews weren't great before but somehow it makes a big difference.
Excellent review but more of my pension disappearing🙂. Wartime grey - perfect for my WWII layout. Got one from Rails for £86.50. Beautiful model, good price, grand service. Thanks Sam. Keep safe. J.T.
WOW!!!! There is not one thing I do not like about this engine!!!! You got a REAL good deal on that engine, and I can't find anything wrong with it either. I LOVE the elegant gray paint livery, the crisp details, the pipe work, the red connecting rods, the painted boiler and cab details, the fact that the 2 rear trailing wheel flaw from the Adam's Radial 4-4-2 Tank engine has been fixed on this engine, the smooth running, and it's powerful!!! MY God, I'm blown away, and this is just the first engine for 2019 which is not good because this engine is gonna be VERY tough to beat!!!! You're gonna need to find one heck of an engine to beat this. I can't stop admiring this beautiful little engine. I'll most definitely get one when I can. I can't wait to see more of what's to come. :) Beautiful engine! :)
haha me too Chris - I can't think of a single thing! And definitely very tough to beat - I bet this will win the year actually!! ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think you've hit the nail on the head the Sam, it's worth supporting this whatever your model. I have placed an order for one and I model in N gauge, and have no reason to buy this other than I believe in the company ethos and think it's stunning to look at! Fantastic video as usual.
An incredible way to start with this year's reviews, Sam. The N7 class was a fantastic model, its something to celebrate how good it is. They really put effort on the quality with many parts of the body being metal, making it very heavy. Its also a very good performer, 8 coaches isn't easy for many locos, and doesn't sees to struggle. The attention of detail is great too, the Worl War II White livery is very attrative looking, and its amazing they managed to make a good detailed cab, despite not being very visible one. And obviously, the value is suprisingly good, being a model that could be more expensive. This proves that Oxford really takes care for their costumers, being able to sell their models for a great price, wich is very afortable for many people. Its a great model to start, similar to the P class from last year and its ranking will be very difficult to pass, but time will tell. Anyways, hope you're having a nice day, and I'll see you in the next video.
Beautiful! I want one of these! I am just starting the hobby and trying to determine where to start. This loco may be the place. Thank you so much, Sam, for your passion and detail in explaining the various products.
It’s great your back Sam! I very shocked on how that N7 preformed. I was expecting it to fail with with a poor motor! (Like the Dean Goods), but it didn’t and I’m very impressed! Great to have you back Sam! James ;)
Something I do love about the model are the headboard holders on the smokebox being fitted rather than molded. You could fit it with a headboard of a (made up) town/station, and allowing for creativity on models is always something I like.
WOW!!!I’ve been amazed from, this first year’s review. Not only the N7 is fantastic, but also the rolling coaches in LMS blue at the beginning, the stars. MY GOD!!! Keep up the great job,Sam, 2019 will be a VERY GOOD year 😉-The LMB Channel
What a great review and what a great loco. It shows you can have a quality locomotive that doesn't break the bank. Love it. I might have given it a 10! LOL Way to start off the new yew Sam THANK you.
Thank you for this one Sam, and thanks also for all the things you've been doing with Hatton's. This is indeed a very lovely and affordable loco, really can't beat it can you! The quality/price ratio is what other marques should strive for I think... Bye for now, Joachim
Amazing review Sam! This is going to be a tough loco to beat this year I reckon. I was thinking about models I might want to save up for a purchase this year and I think this one has been added to the list of ones I am considering immediately. It amazes me how great of a loco this is for such a reasonable price. If Oxford Rail continue to make models this good, I think the Hornby and Bachmann will have no other choice than to follow suit and join in on making their locos with diecast and an affordable price tag. A very good thing for the hobby. Keep up the great work Sam!
Thanks again mate - yeah I really think so too - super impressed with this! Hope you really enjoy it if you decide to get one!! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Well, it seems this is the number one model I've reviewed this year. It was only the second loco I reviewed, and it stayed at the top ever since. The only loco I've ever given a perfect 10/10.
Very impressed with Oxford Rail... Re-started my train hobby after 55 years, having a lot of fun with it but the price of the major makes scares the hell out of me! Almost looked for another hobby..... almost :) Thanks Sam!
I just picked one up in mint condition from ebay for £80 !!.... what a stunning loco. Thanks for the excellent reviews which have pointed me to a few locos now, or also put me off some too
That’s seriously impressive. I’ve an LNER one on pre-order and I’m looking forward to it even more now. I’ve seen a video elsewhere of one hauling 16 coaches on the level having started on a 3rd radius curve. There does look to be a visible join on the boiler, where the motor cradle is part of the lower boiler. I think it shows up more due to the livery, I expect it’s less obvious in black. That Westinghouse cylinder looks like a nice moulding mind. I like the new transition by the way.
Cheers Jim - enjoy the LNER one - I'm sure it'll be just as impressive! And 16 coaches is seriously impressive. Yes that is quite noticeable on the close-up shots, but I admit I wasn't really conscious of it when using the model! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It looks like a great model. I am glad your videos are starting back up now because I am still ill and only getting worse from last time I messaged you and it has been dragging me down a bit. This video helped cheer me up. I think I will be getting this model.
Received my early BR version this week. Straight out of the box it performed faultlessly on the club layout, getting many positive comments from other members. My only gripes are: the lack of internal valve gear as you also remarked, the cheapskate application of the smokebox number direct to the smokebox door and a complaint that applies to all enclosed cab models, make the cab roof removable please. Fitting crew, weathering and simply admiring the wonderful detail now commonplace in 4mm scale cabs would all be so much simpler. These locos are the first ones I was familiar with as a child living in North London. When they were facing withdrawal in the early 60's, the crews used to invite us schoolboys to travel in the cab from Enfield Town ("Just keep your heads down as we pass the loco depot office, boys") and even operate the reversing wheel and regulator on occasions!
Really glad to hear that - they're wonderful aren't they?! Yes that was one of my criticisms too - but just fine for the price! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I spent this afternoon weathering my N7, it looks much better now but haven't managed to squeeze a crew into the cab yet. As a result of minutely scrutinising this loco I found another issue that I'll need to work on; i.e. the front coupling sticks out far too much. A Bachmann LBSC E4 tank I was weathering as well has its front coupling way shorter.
We had them on our branchline on the east coast of Essex. The amount of destruction of track and buildings along our branchline since 1960s is shocking. We don't have the 31s and 37s pulling the nuclear flask anymore since Bradwell nuclear closed.
As an LNER (GE) man I’ve been very excited about this product. Seeing the initial video and now this review of the loco it is going to be welcomed with open arms by LNER (GE) modelers. So you know Sam, The loco is very accurate to the prototype as a belpaire fireboxed version of the N7 some modelers have been a bit suspicious about the chimney, dome, blower pipe (which was fitted to a certain series of the N7) and the fitting of vacuum pipes to a GER loco (which tended to run on air only) But if I am honest for £87 pounds that’s simply amazing and the LNER & BR versions will also be very very nice
Thanks so much for the comment - I can definitely see why you were excited! Great to hear that it's accurate too - just brilliant! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I still need to get one of these - They're gorgeous things and the only reason I haven't yet is the fact that, currently, I'm making use of several decent offers on SR Locos (which, given about 90% of my stock is Stock is Southern and the rest is LT is sort of logical). Once I've got myself an E4 I'll be getting an N7 (LNER Black to match my modelling period). As for haulage, eight wouldn't be a big deal for a real one of these (I think they were utilised on trains formed from pairs of Quint-Art sets, that is five-car sets that were articulated, and certainly on pairs of Quad-Art sets, which would be eight total) so it's good that the model matches the prototype in that regard. If I had a better reason to get one (I.E. If I didn't model almost exclusively Southern prototypes) I'd already have one. As it stands I'm planning a London-area layout to justify one! Amazing in all areas - Just want Oxford to do a few ex-LBSCR and ex-SECR locos and they'll have my money. What mystifies me about Oxford vs. Hornby is the fact that they share C.E.Os and clearly collaborate (Hornby's 1:76 scale road vehicles are generally made by Oxford, not Corgi and Oxford's. Buildings have been incorporated into Hornby's range) so how on earth can such a difference in price and quality be justified?
I can highly recommend it mate - they're truly excellent models! I bet you're right - I can see these hauling more than 8! Thanks a lot for the info, Cheers, Sam :)
The Great Eastern section of the LNER had air brakes. If I recall, the entire class was intact until the electrification to Chingford and Enfield was complete, around 1960, which took away their livelihood. The GER had considered electrification in 1903 and built a freak locomotive called the Decapod to test the steam alternative. In the end, it settled for keeping steam until the LNER completed the Shenfield electrification in 1949. The small driving wheels gave them sparky acceleration.
#1002 was built at Stratford Works on June 30th, 1921 for the Great Eastern Railway Company. She later became LNER #7980 in 1923 and later renumbered to #9602 in 1946. She became British Railways #69602 in 1948 and was withdrawn from duty on July 31st, 1959. She was scrapped at Stratford Works on September 30th, 1959.
The N7 is a good looking loco. It's so cheap, yet it's beautiful to look at. So beautiful that when I go to a train show, I may just buy one or even two if they have different running numbers.
You say that it has no motion gear detail under the boiler, however it is cut out so you can see through and i think it’s quite effective when it’s running along, bearing in mind that most locos just have a flat spot there, with no detail at all.
I will say my Janus 060 diesel made by Oxford rail for golden valley models is pretty well detailed and weighty lighter nights are coming and hopefully I can start playing with it. This model also looks great.
Haha, same reaction as me when mine arrived on Monday. Hope oxford rail go down the pregrouping route (easy on my wallet!), they do it better than anyone else - especially price wise. - Kind regards
A great first review of the year Sam...the model certainly looks impressive.....I'm warming toward the colour and also toward buying this model, though a BR black could be more favourable......I enjoy your passion and totally agree that this company should be supported the price makes buying it even more appealing. Thanks for the first review....regards, Myles
Thanks very much for that! Yes apparently the BR black has been very popular! Can't wait to see what else they come up with! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Brilliant review as always Sam. You just know full well the big dogs will be sweating over this model given it’s utterly embarrassing their prices and build quality, I hope this loco sells like hot cakes.
The better prices will also be better for rail modellers here in Australia such as myself seeing how the UK pound to Australian dollar exchange rate is absolutely ridiculous. Very fantastic model and price. Great video Sam
I have a question, have you ever thought about getting a ho real steam train from hornby, it’s like driving a real train on your ho railway, it has a whistle that works like a real train, and it can pull every train car you have because it is using real steam.
"I know some people think it's unprofessional to see me getting exited over a model" Well those people have clearly chosen a wrong hobby :^) Keep up the great content!
"In a few days, these powerful old horses once identifiable as the N7 class has been reduced to 60 tons characterless steel and metal." -British Pathe The quote i can hear in my head everytime i see an N7
Picked up one of these in LNER Black for £92 from one my local train fair earlier today. Was £95 but the seller knocked off £3 for me. Excited to get it running!
Fantastic review Sam, you have found another little gem. If my local model shop get one of these in stock, it will depend whether they do, i will definitely look into getting one. Be well and keep safe, regards Gary.
I also agree that this locomotive is very cheap for it's price tag. It's excellently detailed and worth every penny and pound! Good review Sam; Well done.
A lovely model. The real engines had small wheels to give them excellent acceleration and the model seems to reproduce this quality of the N7s working out of Liverpool Street station, London.
Just got one of these off eBay , superb and runs fantastic...but at high speed it is noisy like an electic drill running. Nice at the speeds I run at though so it doesn't worry me, but is this normal for this Loco ?
Great to hear that Malcolm! Mine is a little noisier at high speed, I wouldn't say like a drill though - maybe you could give the bearings a touch of oil?? Thanks for watching, Sam :)
At 87 quid, the N7 looks pure quality mate! Oxford Rail could be the answer to affordable railway sets in the future. Railway stock now is just so unbelievably pricey mate! Cheers Sam, a great review. 👍🚂🚃🚃🚃🚄🚈🚆🚉😁👍
I pulled out of my pre-order for the N7 when it was announced (financial reasons). After watching this review, I may have to reconsider. It looks amazing. ^_^
Me too! And yes that's a very very common (and annoying problem!) You can fix it though - carefully remove the front bogey, and trim the spring to about 1/2 the original length - you'll see a huge improvement! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Excellent value on this! It's been a massive complaint of mine how expensive new locos are (Hence I've been repairing used models and buying those more recently) Oxford, while their previous loco attempts haven't been great, really put a lot of thought into this little loco and I'm glad to see them doing so well. Hopefully this competition will get some more budget models on the market. (And hopefully some of the US branch manufacturers take notice, the pricing on high quality locos here is almost worse - I've seen 0-6-0 tender locos sold for over 300 USD without DCC!)
Thanks a lot! Mine too - just a breath of fresh air to see a cheaper engine! Im really glad to see them doing so well too! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I remember seeing a pathe news video of N7s being scrapped, a very upsetting video for anyone who likes steam locomotives. THANKFULLY A member of the class was preserved. I am so getting one of those models.
Hi Sam. Unfortunately, I'm not so taken with the wartime grey livery and what makes it a little worse is that the yellow running number on the side of the tank(s) is not outlined or shadowed in black as it is on the rear buffer beam. Talking of which, there is a marked absence of rivets on the rear buffer beam and I wonder whether this was the case with the real thing. I'm not sure whether you may be able to make an out-of-hand judgement on which is the best manufacturer of model trains, coaches and trucks/wagons as there are quite a few factors to take into account, such as price, etc. I suppose to cloud the issue further may be the fact that perhaps one manufacturer takes the lead with one model, then another manufacturer with a later/different model; I'd love to hear your views. A possible suggestion for a video: I personally would love to see a more detailed coverage of your model room - where you do the maintenance on your rolling stock, a closer look at your setup of track and white background for the detailed view of the models you review. Do you use more than one camera? Sometimes there is a rather "narrow" field of view, perhaps due to lighting issues. I suppose that most of your viewers are more interested in the trains themselves, but there may be one or two others who would like to see the things I have just mentioned.
That's fair enough Paul - it's not for everyone! It's quite difficult to say, well worth looking up some photos! I do have a lot of behind the scenes videos for members, if you ever wanted to consider joining? :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, Firstly, there is nothing unprofessional about getting excited over a model train; that just goes to show that you have come across something remarkable !!! Just love this loco; it's beautiful throughout. Is the rear axle fixed or does it swivel, as I am working with a lot of 1st radius track and would hate to find that it won't go round it?? Please let me know your thoughts. Seriously thinking about buying one of these for my WW2 part of my layout.
Welcome back Sam, in terms of review. :) That does look like an impressive model, I'll have to get one at some point. Also, love the new intro and the transitions. The transitions remind me of Batman the 1966 tv show--I personally think it'd be funny if you had Bullman's moo over this, though that might get annoying. Can't wait to see what you have in store for 2019. :)
Thanks Patrick - really glad you liked the review and the 2019 changes! haha that would be funny - maybe occasionally?? ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
This engine has a real soft spot with me. This is the FIRST ready to run Great Eastern Railway Liveried engine!! After nearly 100 Years of Railway modelling! Insane! However I really REALLY hope they make a model of K85 No.1001, the only one Produed in the beautiful GER Royal blue. That would be another first for Railway Modelling.
What a beautiful little loco! Although at this moment I both don't have the space and can't afford to have a set up (what happens when you love horse riding!) I don't have one, thus have to enjoy yours as my own, but when I become to buggered to ride I do aspire to have one and I should like to have an N7, great vid! 👌
Thanks very much! Yes it's absolutely safe - you can't get a harmful shock from 12v. If your fingers are wet, you might feel a tingle if you touch both tracks at the same time - but it's certainly safe (and fun!) Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Very nice, although I am not really one for cab detail, the detail in this one is superb. Bit difficult for me to see the yellow number on the gray, maybe that was to confuse the enemy; German spies disguised as train spotters.
I watched someone else's video about this model earlier today and the only thing they found wrong with it, was a little bit of paint detail missing on the left whistle apart from that it's a great model it has a very unique livery. If I had a train layout of my own I would get this N7 plus that LBSC E4 you reviewed before.
@@SamsTrains I'm a fan of all different classes of steam engines from the small 0-4-0 Peckett to the large 2-10-0 9F plus I'm a fan of all different classes of Diesels. I watched your Hornby and Bachmann 2019 live chat videos and there are some nice models coming out. I liked the class 66 models in their new liveries my local model shop has the Hornby one's priced at £67 while the Bachmann one's are priced at £120 to £130. Apparently on someone else's UA-cam video the newly painted Hornby class 66 models are ex LIMA models which were old class 59 models from years ago when i was little back in the 1980s they've just got remolded detail and repainted as class 66 their not bad models to be honest the price isn't bad ever.
interesting colour. i was looking for a n gauge engine for my first ever layout and i saw an engine with a very light blue paint and a maroon red/brown running board. very strange colour scheme for that one
I think you’re missing a key aspect of the performance of a model from your reviews. That is the ability for model locos to tackle gradients and the transition between gradients. Ive been reminded by this review of the Oxford Rail Adams radial tank engine. This model was great except it was let down by the absence of a sprung or pivoting rear pony truck. This prevented the loco from tackling gradient changes as the read pony truck was solidly mounted in the chassis (no movement up or down). When the loco reached the bottom of a gradient the driving wheels would be lifted up off of the rails and the loco couldn’t manage the transition. Reading a review of the model would probably explain the problem better than I have. As a result of the problem the Hornby Adams radial tank was a better seller as the rear pony truck moved up and down allowing the driving wheels to remain in contact with the rails for longer.
Hi Jordan - I did a gradient test - 'Gordon's Hill' has quite a slope to it, which is why I test the pulling power there. I also talked about the Radial tank issue in the video too - maybe you missed the performance section?? ;) Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I might buy one of these. I don't even model in OO, I have N.... and I don't even live in the UK, I live in the US. This thing would look great on a mantlepiece or in display case.
Hi Sam I was not intending to buy any more trains for a while but just changed my mind I love a good heavy locomotive and although it initially looks plain it really got my attention well spotted 👍
11:43 but i do like that you can see the back side of the wheel! So (possibly) the best modeled you reviewed in a year was your first review again, eh? I might actually get myself one of these or a Hornby Peckett. On eBay I found the Peckett for $110 and the N7 was $132! But both are cheaper than the RRP for Bachmann Trains' 2-6-2 tender loco for $145 (which has basic detail and is a 20+ year old tooling)
Yes! I should have mentioned that really - I quite like that too! Yes I reckon this would probably beat the Peckett - can certainly recommend it if you like the look of it! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice loco :D . I've had a footplate ride on the surviving example (No. 69621). It was my 18th birthday event... most people have a party or a dance, but I got a tour of the Llangollen Railway workshops, and a ride on one of the locos :P . So, I have a bit of a soft spot for this class!
The model N7 steam engine is very impressive. I definitely want one for sure now. Except I would like to get the black BR "Early Crest" version. And maybe a BR brake van to go with it. Just watching the model in action made me feel as excited as you. Hopefully this is only the start and Oxford Rail decides to produce more steam engines of this caliber. Update: I've decided to go for the "Late Crest" version instead. But still might get the "Early Crest" version.
Also, this is actually my favorite steam train overall, I don’t have one myself but I may ask for one for my Birthday which is coming in about 1.5 to 2 months.
impressive! Might have to take a look at this one. Was going to give a wide birth to oxford after the dean goods. Colour looks a more a pale green cream than grey. A bit if a funny shade esp with those yellow numbers.
Thanks a lot Tim - I can highly recommend it! I understand how you feel about the Dean goods - I felt the same at the time, but I think they've redeemed themselves with this! Yes it's a very funny livery - but luckily they've done LNER and BR black versions, so they're a good choice if you're not keen on the grey! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Definitely!! Although I've changed the rating system for this year - so the scores can't really be directly compared unfortunately! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam, I was wondering if you could try the LNER Black version of the N7, & also do a triple header with 2 of your N2’s with the Oxford Rail N7 in your next live stream or in a review video.
Wonderful review as are they all. shame I missed the offer price but still only 98 pounds at Hatton's & less than the rrp of 110. Its still great value based on the performance and build etc. I've gone for the wartime grey & the LNER Black
Good Evening Sam, good to see you back reviewing model locomotives again. I must say, the Oxford Rail N7 Tank Engine is a superb model, quite cheap, runs flawlessly and really strong, for a 0-6-2 Tank Engine. I believe I could see 4 0-6-2 Tank Engines in the sidings & the odd one out is the Adams Radial Tank 4-4-2 on the turntable. Don't forget to review each of your model steam locomotives you got from the Warley Model Railway Exhibition at The NEC in Birmingham back in November 2018 including the Bachmann NRM GNR C1 Atlantic No.251. Superb review my friend. As usual, I give your review a 10/10 & 5 Stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Kind regards Jordan Shingler 😉
Mmmmmm, I've seen the price of the new Bachmann SECR C Class a while ago, very stupid, at least I have one, I've brought it when I was at Tyseley Locomotive Works in Birmingham during their Open Day in July 2014 and I paided £96.00 for it, a much better price. Who knows, when the Bachmann C Class in SECR Green livery is released, one of the retailers might lower the price, so you can get it.
Hey Jordan, thanks very much for that mate - I'm so impressed with these N7s! Absolutely - I definitely won't forget my warley stuff! Yep - it's just crazy - I paid £90 for my SR lined black one!! I think £191 is the discounted retailer price.... so it's got a long way to go, haha! ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
That does indeed look like a very nice model at a good price A bit of additional info, Hornby appear to have taken over Oxford Diecast. Something I had suspected after buying some Oxford Rail wagons in my local Hornby models outlet store. They had removed the outer box but also had some buildings in Oxford brand boxes.
Thanks a lot Rob - it certainly is! I didn't know they've taken them over - I do know that some shares are owned by the same company though, if I'm remembering correctly - so they are affiliated now, at the very least! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It looks like a great value model, but is it just me, or does the front coupling stick out an awful long way? On my Hornby N2 the loop of the tension lock coupling is maybe a mm beyond the buffers, and most locos have the loop 2-3mm beyond, but with the N7 the front loop looks way beyond - nearer a cm. When it runs cab first there must be a huge gap between the loco and carriage buffers.
Proof locomotives can be diecast and still be affordable.
If they keep this up Hornby and Bachmann are in trouble.
Yeah I agree.
I agree completely - it's a very good sign for the hobby! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
If hornby still exists this time next year I'll be quite surprised...

WOW!!!! There is not one thing I do not like about this engine!!!! You got a REAL good deal on that engine, and I can't find anything wrong with it either.
And definitely very tough to beat - I bet this will win the year actually!! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Awesome engine Sam, this has definitely become a new favorite of mine and I can’t wait to see what other engines come this year!!! :)
I saw the cabin detail and my jaw dropped, it looks sooo nice, blown away for what it costs. 👌
I know - me too - just astonishing! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think you've hit the nail on the head the Sam, it's worth supporting this whatever your model. I have placed an order for one and I model in N gauge, and have no reason to buy this other than I believe in the company ethos and think it's stunning to look at!
Fantastic video as usual.
Thanks a lot Alex - yeah I definitely think so! Let's hope they do more like this! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks very much Valentino - yes a wonderful start! This really ticked all the boxes for me! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Beautiful! I want one of these! I am just starting the hobby and trying to determine where to start. This loco may be the place. Thank you so much, Sam, for your passion and detail in explaining the various products.
Thanks a lot Michael - this may well be the place - good luck!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, nice train. Really deserves the honour of being your first review of 2019
-Andrei
Thank you Andrei - I agree - a very well deserving loco! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Only 5 seconds in and the locomotive looks amazing
haha I don't blame you - this is amazing!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It’s great your back Sam! I very shocked on how that N7 preformed. I was expecting it to fail with with a poor motor! (Like the Dean Goods), but it didn’t and I’m very impressed! Great to have you back Sam!
James ;)
haha thanks James - I was expecting the same really - just incredible how well it ran! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Something I do love about the model are the headboard holders on the smokebox being fitted rather than molded. You could fit it with a headboard of a (made up) town/station, and allowing for creativity on models is always something I like.
Yes I noticed those too - such great attention to detail here! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It's great to see how Oxford Rail are making such high-quality models for such a low price. Great review!
Justin
I agree Justin - they really are doing a grand job! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
WOW!!!I’ve been amazed from, this first year’s review. Not only the N7 is fantastic, but also the rolling coaches in LMS blue at the beginning, the stars. MY GOD!!! Keep up the great job,Sam, 2019 will be a VERY GOOD year 😉-The LMB Channel
haha thanks so much mate, really glad you liked all the changes for 2019!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
What a great review and what a great loco. It shows you can have a quality locomotive that doesn't break the bank. Love it. I might have given it a 10! LOL Way to start off the new yew Sam THANK you.
Thanks mate - absolutely, let's hope we see many more like this - really glad you liked it!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thank you for this one Sam, and thanks also for all the things you've been doing with Hatton's. This is indeed a very lovely and affordable loco, really can't beat it can you! The quality/price ratio is what other marques should strive for I think... Bye for now, Joachim
My pleasure Joachim, definitely can't beat this, for sure! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Well, it seems this is the number one model I've reviewed this year. It was only the second loco I reviewed, and it stayed at the top ever since. The only loco I've ever given a perfect 10/10.
Ahh great to hear that - yes these are epic! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Very impressed with Oxford Rail... Re-started my train hobby after 55 years, having a lot of fun with it but the price of the major makes scares the hell out of me! Almost looked for another hobby..... almost :) Thanks Sam!
Glad to hear that Roger - I can't fault their recent models, truly wonderful things! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Ahh so sorry to hear that mate - I do hope you're feeling better soon! Hang in there!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I swear hornby can find the oldest, unfamous locomotives and make simply beautiful models out of them
haha they certainly can - but it's Oxford Rail that did this one - and they did an amazing job! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hardly the oldest, either...
Very cool - thanks a lot for sharing! Yeah it's a great shame about all that!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks a lot for the info,
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hi Henry, thanks very much for the information on this! I'd love to see a photo of the freak Dacapod!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

She became British Railways #69602 in 1948 and was withdrawn from duty on July 31st, 1959. She was scrapped at Stratford Works on September 30th, 1959.

Whoa... this is probably the highest ranked model you’ve ever reviewed, truly fantastic model! I also love the new video format keep up the good work.
haha yeah it probably is actually - just incredible! Really glad you like the new changes for 2019!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The N7 is a good looking loco. It's so cheap, yet it's beautiful to look at. So beautiful that when I go to a train show, I may just buy one or even two if they have different running numbers.
Thanks a lot mate - absolutely - they did an amazing job with this! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You say that it has no motion gear detail under the boiler, however it is cut out so you can see through and i think it’s quite effective when it’s running along, bearing in mind that most locos just have a flat spot there, with no detail at all.
That is very true - the large air space makes it look very realistic - good point!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The gray livery with black lining and red coupling rods looks excellent!
I agree Sharky - really nice looking this one! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I will say my Janus 060 diesel made by Oxford rail for golden valley models is pretty well detailed and weighty lighter nights are coming and hopefully I can start playing with it. This model also looks great.
Thanks for that Ben! I have one of those too - but I'm not opening it until the review!! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Haha, same reaction as me when mine arrived on Monday. Hope oxford rail go down the pregrouping route (easy on my wallet!), they do it better than anyone else - especially price wise.
- Kind regards
Glad to hear it Harry - I hope to too - this was wonderful!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Have you thought about getting your self 3D scanned and printed as crew for your models?
I hadn't thought of it, but it's a very good idea actually! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Could bring it up with Hattons as they did with a bloke who now does it as a side business.
Love it, Sam. Looks chunky from behind as it pulls those coaches with ease. Good vid, thanks for spotting this little gem.
Cheers Ray, yes a lovely chunky loco this one!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks very much Mike - that's very true - it's certainly showing them up big time! I hope it does too!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The better prices will also be better for rail modellers here in Australia such as myself seeing how the UK pound to Australian dollar exchange rate is absolutely ridiculous. Very fantastic model and price. Great video Sam
Ahh that's very good to hear! You've got to get yourself one of these then - they're aamazing! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have a question, have you ever thought about getting a ho real steam train from hornby, it’s like driving a real train on your ho railway, it has a whistle that works like a real train, and it can pull every train car you have because it is using real steam.
I have thought of it, but they don't make them any more sadly - and they're super expensive :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Well those people have clearly chosen a wrong hobby :^)
Keep up the great content!
That's very true Matias - cheers mate! :D

Hi sam if you want you can take a magnet and hold it over the loco to see whether the model is made of metal or the metal parts. Take care
Not usually - the metal alloys they use don’t tend to be attracted to magnets!
@@SamsTrains ok
Wow! As a pre grouping collector myself, it seems I'll have to get one!
Thanks Peter, I can definitely recommend this, for sure!

"In a few days, these powerful old horses once identifiable as the N7 class has been reduced to 60 tons characterless steel and metal."

The quote i can hear in my head everytime i see an N7

Picked up one of these in LNER Black for £92 from one my local train fair earlier today. Was £95 but the seller knocked off £3 for me. Excited to get it running!
That's fantastic - really hope you enjoy it!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Fantastic review Sam, you have found another little gem. If my local model shop get one of these in stock, it will depend whether they do, i will definitely look into getting one. Be well and keep safe, regards Gary.
Cheers Gary - I'm just amazed by these - I really hope your local will get some in! :D

I also agree that this locomotive is very cheap for it's price tag. It's excellently detailed and worth every penny and pound! Good review Sam; Well done.
Thanks Jacob - glad you thought so too - I'm super happy with this! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
A lovely model. The real engines had small wheels to give them excellent acceleration and the model seems to reproduce this quality of the N7s working out of Liverpool Street station, London.
Thanks a lot John, and for the info too - yes they've certainly got some grunt!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Absolutely - this is just crazy for 87 quid. I just hope they can keep producing models as good as this so inexpensively!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I pulled out of my pre-order for the N7 when it was announced (financial reasons). After watching this review, I may have to reconsider. It looks amazing. ^_^
That's understandable - I have to do the same sometimes too! This one is definitely awesome though! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I do love me some Oxford. Have a radial tank amazing model only issue I had with it is the rear pony can beach it and slight radiant
Me too! And yes that's a very very common (and annoying problem!) You can fix it though - carefully remove the front bogey, and trim the spring to about 1/2 the original length - you'll see a huge improvement!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains thanks for the advice will give it a go. Take care
The first loco I gave a 10/10 score! The LNER Black livery mine is in looks fantastic and it is the best slow speed runner I own!
Ooh great choice - yeah they are amazing runners aren't they?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Is there a place I can get a copy of your list of best locos? I need to keep a copy to use when I buy locos.
Excellent value on this!
It's been a massive complaint of mine how expensive new locos are (Hence I've been repairing used models and buying those more recently)
Oxford, while their previous loco attempts haven't been great, really put a lot of thought into this little loco and I'm glad to see them doing so well.
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Didn’t know there was a review for this masterpiece!!! Nice nice nice 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks very much mate - she certainly is a masterpiece!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I remember seeing a pathe news video of N7s being scrapped, a very upsetting video for anyone who likes steam locomotives. THANKFULLY A member of the class was preserved. I am so getting one of those models.
Ahh that must have been very upsetting - but yes, very glad one was saved! Hope you enjoy the model!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks Patrick - really glad you liked the review and the 2019 changes! haha that would be funny - maybe occasionally?? ;D

I reckon so! ;D
Love the GER blue livery. Live near where the preserved y14/j15 loco is based and she is in that livery, very stunning!
Blimey is it really the first?? Let's hope there are many more soon!

haha that's fair enough mate - this is a little less messy than horses mind you ;)

Just wow and again it looks great in the grey just like the hattons one dose. Another great vid Sam Cheers
Thanks a lot Gareth - it really does - glad you enjoyed it! :D

Great review for the new year!! Just wanted to ask, when the engines are running, is it safe to touch the track
Thanks very much! Yes it's absolutely safe - you can't get a harmful shock from 12v. If your fingers are wet, you might feel a tingle if you touch both tracks at the same time - but it's certainly safe (and fun!)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Very nice, although I am not really one for cab detail, the detail in this one is superb. Bit difficult for me to see the yellow number on the gray, maybe that was to confuse the enemy; German spies disguised as train spotters.
haha thanks Ian - yeah I agree actually - though it's much easier to read in person, I noticed that too!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
What a beast of a little train. Like my n gauge pannier tank that's metal body. It out performs much larger steam engines all day.
Thanks Lawrence! Wow that sounds very impressive for N gauge - can't fault diecast locos!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I watched someone else's video about this model earlier today and the only thing they found wrong with it, was a little bit of paint detail missing on the left whistle apart from that it's a great model it has a very unique livery. If I had a train layout of my own I would get this N7 plus that LBSC E4 you reviewed before.
Ahh is that so? That's very unlucky - I didn't find anything like that on mine! Ooh sounds good - a 0-6-2 fan then?? :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thank you! Ahh very interesting - that does sound strange, but lovely at the same time!

haha it does a little - the original Thomas theme did have elements of ragtime to it!

I also talked about the Radial tank issue in the video too - maybe you missed the performance section?? ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I might buy one of these. I don't even model in OO, I have N.... and I don't even live in the UK, I live in the US. This thing would look great on a mantlepiece or in display case.
Ooh I can definitely recommend it - it's beautiful! :D

Hi Sam I was not intending to buy any more trains for a while but just changed my mind I love a good heavy locomotive and although it initially looks plain it really got my attention well spotted 👍
Ooh I can't blame you for that - you definitely won't be disappointed!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Also - check Hatton's - they should be way cheaper than Ebay, and they'll ship to you!
Thanks a lot Chris - wow that must have been amazing - you lucky guy!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Looking forward to the day Oxford do an LMS loco! Honestly stunned by the cab detail. Does anyone else get the n2/n7 classes mixed up?
Me too! I wonder if that'll be next?? :3
Yeah I do - they look very similar
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sounds great - the early BR versions do look lovely too! Really looking forward to seeing what else Oxford can do! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
If I had one I would make a shunting layout and weather this loco up and make her look used Love it!
Mr Muffin Trains nun
Ooh nice - that's a good idea! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Also, this is actually my favorite steam train overall, I don’t have one myself but I may ask for one for my Birthday which is coming in about 1.5 to 2 months.
Great to hear that Craig - they are amazing - hope you can get one! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@Goldfish no not yet, I am gonna have to wait until Christmas, & if not then I will buy it myself.
@Goldfish I hope so too
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
mine keeps derailing when pulling even one wagon even on the widest radius curves.
Hey Sam that video review for 2019, your new slogan and the tank engine are AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hey, thanks so much - glad you liked the new stuff!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yeah, I can’t complain on this model. It’s pretty good!
So I suppose it beats the pecket tank engine for best model?
Definitely!! Although I've changed the rating system for this year - so the scores can't really be directly compared unfortunately!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam, I was wondering if you could try the LNER Black version of the N7, & also do a triple header with 2 of your N2’s with the Oxford Rail N7 in your next live stream or in a review video.
I would love to - another N7 is on my list! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Wonderful review as are they all. shame I missed the offer price but still only 98 pounds at Hatton's & less than the rrp of 110. Its still great value based on the performance and build etc. I've gone for the wartime grey & the LNER Black
Thanks Nick! Yeah I agree - any less than £100 for this is stunning value! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Also it looks like it has southern headcode lamp irons
haha yeah they do look like the southern ones! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Kind regards
Jordan Shingler 😉
I think £191 is the discounted retailer price.... so it's got a long way to go, haha! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The wight makes the red side rods quite eye catching
Yeah I agree!! :D
That does indeed look like a very nice model at a good price
A bit of additional info, Hornby appear to have taken over Oxford Diecast.
Splendid! That model is near perfect. For such a cheap price too. How fast is it?
It really is! I've not tried this fast yet - but I bet it'll go quite fast, but not crazy speed! ;D
Thanks Richard - yes it does actually, I suppose you could replace it with one of the shorter ones?
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
