  • Ocean County - Brick - 176 20th Ave - Two Alarm -
Just after 11:45 PM Brick Township received a call for a possible house fire, caller reporting fire from the garage. On arrival of PD, they confirmed a working fire, flames from the garage, and extending. The auto second alarm was transmitted due to the confirmed working fire. First due fire officer 2410 was on the scene shortly after, along with 2471 first due engine. 2410 sized it up as a 1.5-story wood frame with active fire showing. 2471 was to hit the hydrant and stretch a 1.3/4 line to the house for a fire attack. Crews started with fire suppression while crews went inside for searches and further fire attacks. Outside crews were working to open up the garage where the fire had started, while one of the members was operating the opening the garage gas leaked out of the tool into the FF and quickly engulfed him, due to quick reactions from fellow FF's around they were able to drop him and quickly get the fire out with no injuries. Crews remained to work and suppress the fire, crews worked for around 1.5 hours on the scene. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is under investigation by the Brick Township Fire Bureau. *With permission from FF involved.*

The fire caused by a faulty gas cap on the tool the member was operating. There was a line inside the garage already & one around the back, crews had just started to open by the garage as seen in the video. The third line wasn’t fully stretched but in the process.

@cjritchie9701 You are the one talking rubbish. The line inside is of no use to the crew at the front which is clearly obvious because they didn't use it when the guy got consumed in fire and the same goes for the line round the back.
It's basic stuff to have a charged covering line .
Sorry tell me again, what department do you work for ?

Also, I’d like to add the gas was leaking from a faulty gas cap on the tool. The liquid you see on the ground is water from the line inside.

@@cjritchie9701there should have been a charged line before making entry into a working fire. Even if one already in the garage just to protect the firefighters cutting the hole. Obviously not to make entry into the garage and push fire onto the interior crews preventing them from pushing the fire out. A good driver should always have the bumper line or hose reel ready to go to protect himself, others, and tools and hoses from between the apparatus to the fire building. That is a bumper line / hose reels sole use for being on the rig

Glad to see FF Quinn got out alright. I remember seeing a similar thing happen about 2 years ago to a brother with LAFD. Was cutting window bars with the K12 and the cap popped clean off, some gas splashed out and the sparks caught him almost immediately. He dropped the saw, turned round and his captain grabbed the line up off the sidewalk and blasted him with it. Whole thing took maybe 20 seconds, almost fast enough you could have missed it if you weren't watching. That firefighter walked away without injury as well. Just goes to show that accidents can happen. Train well and triple check your gear; it'll save your life. Good catch on this.

@@JimsEquipmentShed As far as I am aware, it still is a regular, old fashioned threaded gas cap. Knowing from personal experience how those are though, I'd imagine it was probably cracked in this case and some fuel leaked out.
As for the instance in LA, not entirely sure what the root cause was, but the same thing occurred and the result was the same: 1 shaken but uninjured fireman. If you would like I can try and find the video and link it here. It shouldn't be too hard to locate.

This is what the videographer saw and he was actually there. did you happen to note that flames were entirely outside the footprint of the Garage. Big clue gasoline spi;;ed from the saws gas tank the fire ignited between the firefighters feet which were also outside the garage there was almost half of the overhead door removed prior to the mayday type incident so any interior hose stream would have been able to reach the FF. The quick response of both the burning FF and his buddies right there also means the fire was extinguished without the use of a hose on the ground smothering the fire and the heat will be removed by the ground. After the fire was out the FF went right back to work. It doesn't get any better than that.

Its an extremely rare occurrence. All fire departments, even volunteer companies, make it a regular point to check over their gear at least once a week. Occasionally things get damaged in a way that no one is able to discern even with significant inspection. Thats when accidents like this occur. It was no one's particular fault, it just happened. Thankfully, everyone including the firefighter who was on fire kept their cool and reacted as they should have.
