I couldn't help but wonder... why does nobody talk about how amazing fashion in SATC season one is?

- I rewatched the first season of Sex and the City and it is so much better than I remembered. The pilot episode looks completely different from the rest of the show, and the mockumentary format can oftentimes be jarring, but the 90s fashion in this season is impeccable.
So in this review, I discuss similarities between the script and Candace Bushnell's book, talk about my favourite fashion moments and season one relationships as well as storylines.
00:00 intro
01:34 the pilot episode
03:17 the book inspiration
04:58 the fashion in satc season one
07:26 season one carrie and big
09:23 miranda and skipper

hiii! I'm really really sorry for absolutely butchering Candace Bushnell’s name in this video. It's my bad, I should have done my research. xx Kasia
Carrie's Hair on SATC is my dream hair ! But I cannot pull off blonde with my curly hair.
I am in love with SJP's hair until she straightened it !
Bozo the Bushnell....
As a Gen X-er who watched the show when it first aired (I was 29 in 1998), I can say that, while it certainly had its faults, it was genuinely groundbreaking. It was rare to see shows with 4 women leads, with storylines about their friendships AND their sex lives. And Samantha was a revelation: Single, loved sex, and utterly unapologetic. And Miranda was allowed to be a professional, prickly at times, and opinionated without being "put in her place".
I liked the first seasons more than the rest... As you said, they deal with serious issues, at least they try, and they are more realistic, making the girls more relatable. After the popularity of the first seasons, they overdid it with fashion and fancy dinners etc and the plot became more shallow, with some exceptions, for example Charlotte's conceiving challenge and Samantha's cancer. It was like after the first seasons the "existential" or professional or sentimental issues were solved and dating or shopping was the only aspect of their lives. Even Carrie and Aidan's relationship that was shown in many episodes was projected very shallow... like the only aspect in their relationship was if Carrie likes the ring or she is scared of commitment or she hates the country house. No deeper feelings.
Carrie went from the Best Hair on Television to - this ? 😮
Yeah they could have ran with her commitment issues. They should have had her the same wardrobe she had in the 1st season. It was far better than anything else she ended up wearing later on.
Amalita was a real one for buying carrie those Dolce & Gabbana shoes
Carrie looked like Venus in those blonde ringlets. S1 is honestly my favorite season because it's relatable and they all shined together.
I honestly can’t believe I’ve watched season 1 so many times and never realized Carrie’s apartment wasn’t the same
I loved the breaking the 4th wall in the first season. It was done perfectly. It’s crazy to see people like Gabriel Macht in small roles. The characters weren’t annoying and Carie was relatable. Later on I started to be annoyed by her with her “lova” talk. Great show tho start to finish
It was before Carrie started squeak-shriek-squealing at every tiny thing 😂
The fashion was awesoooome..all the ladies were beautiful in their own way, very edgy wearable with splashes of name brand and couture that was appropriate for their character’s life..sexy, flattering, the cream of NY! I used to live for Samantha’s 80’s power vibe and Chanel
The 1st episode of the 1st season is the absolute best in the series and the characters are dressed and styled the way people actually looked at the time. The work of the stylist who took over afterwards is magnificent, but the change in the look combined with the changes they made in the way the characters are written makes the next seasons essentially a completely new show.
I agree! The pilot episode of the first season really establishes a unique atmosphere that evolves as the series progresses
Yeah, I feel like the younger generations don’t understand that “Sex and the City” was really groundbreaking at the time and pushed boundaries. lol It’s honestly a bit sad in a way if you think about it.
Yeah the show was groundbreaking
Why don’t they see that it was groundbreaking? Even now, women living single at that older age, and dating around a lot, isn’t seen as ideal in society. Plus these women are so independent from men, and close with eachother. No other tv shows like it.
@@Jenny-ls7hfI think it’s seem as more “relatable” then “groundbreaking” because as you said it’s common to hear people talk down on single independent women over the age of 27 because it’s normal amongst women that they can be this. It isn’t a new concept that even women are unsure about, it’s no longer something changing society normals. I hope I made sense 😅
wait i loved samantha's hair in the pilot the layers give so much bodyyy lol
Literally not sure why the channel owner dissed it
exactly, but i hated carrie’s hair
I watched every single episode of the SATC universe for the first time this year. I can’t believe it took me this long to watch this show! My parents wouldn’t approve based on the title of the show. I’m honestly glad I watched it this year at the age of 30 because it’s so relatable❤
Same 😭🙌🏼
„Universe”? 😂😂😂
Carries newspaper dress is gorgeous
Thank you for this. I think too that SATC is underrated in terms of feminist content. The women have deep friendships and don't promote the bullshit "catfight" attitude. For me it was comforting to watch other women have empowered lives. I'm not in my 20ies anymore, but still this show speaks to me and makes me laugh.
I'm around SJP's age and it was so refreshing to see a show about women my age having good dated, crappy dates, romances that didn't pan out, unashamed casual encounters and talking about their sex lives just like my friends and I did - just in NYC with fancier clothes.
You'll notice these seasons are way more diverse too when it comes to the girls' other friends.
can we all agree that the episode with Amalita is the best episode of season one
Absolutely, thank you
Having Amalita pop in once in a while in AJLT once in a while would have cheered me up during all the cringe….
My favourite episode of season 1, if not top 3 of the entire series. We stan Amalita!
The author's name is not cadence. It's CaNdace.
The MANNIQUIN reunion?
This was hands down my favourite style season. And I mean style in every way. The decor, the fashion, the tone, the writing, everything! Also does anyone else recall the snippet we see of Carries original apartment in the pilot episode? I loved it all
My favorite season one episode is “The Baby Shower.” I loved the parts where Samantha defends Charlotte against Laney for stealing her baby name and when she says “I don’t have a baby, everybody drink.”😆
I was always convinced the costume dept hated Cynthia Nixon in season 1.
I can’t remember if it was season 1 but the episode when she has the HUGE overalls and the HUGE blue puffer coat with the ugly hat on and runs into her ex and his new girlfriend looking hideous......she faints and I always think “who TF dressed her”?!?!?
@@notaytguru8214 The whole point was that she was meant to look dorky and lame in that episode! That's why she didn't want to run into skipper! Derp it was meant to be embarassing... Hello?!
Um.... It's part of her character, being the dry , serious , sarcastic lawyer. Lol. That's literally the character being set up. They are all dressed on purpose to showcase their stereotypes. 🤷♀️🤦♀️
@@doxasophosmoros I know the point of the scene, my point was they didn’t have to take it that far, and she didn’t meet skipper know it all 🙄
Loved your review! I'm reading Bushnell's book now (the collection of columns) and indeed, season 1 is not only heavily influenced, but often repeats whatever is written in the columns line by line. It's amazing to see how they managed to make the best of it on the screen :) season 1 will always stay my favourite
Big and Carrie, toxic or not, were written as soul mates from the very beginning.
I actually liked how they talked to the camera in the first season. Yeah it was more comedy, not so much drama. Carries hair was awful in season one. Not the colour but the length.
She looked like a clown with that hair. Some hair should just not be worn short. She also later had her nose fixed, and looks beautiful in later seasons.
Omg yes I agree. I love the interview bits of season 1 and 2. It brought charm to the show, like an actual anthology. But I understand the decision to make it a fully soap opera esque by season 3.
What? Noooo her hair was gorgeous in those two seasons it’s the pilot that was crap
The highlights were odd, but 90s gonna 90s.
I never liked how SATC started promoting big expensive fashion names a lot more. I think you can still look good and make more budget friendly choices. That being said, I want to say I’m a big fan of the show. I’m just saying an aspect that rubbed me the wrong way in it, especially in later seasons and in the movies.
It's called sponsorship. They wanted to rake in extra millions per year just from advertising in the show.... Which they did... Product placement. It was everywhere... They had a whole episode on Birkin bags and Ralph Lauren paint... It was so hedonistic and shallow. It was unrelatable
SJP can look good in a paper bag, let's face it. I felt a lot of her AJLT styling was very unflattering to her face. Body still looked incredible. I hope Widow Carrie retires the severe buns and stiff braided styles this season!
@@doxasophosmorosthe show couldn’t have gotten as far as it did if the audience wasn’t able to relate to the fashion. I couldn’t care less about fashion and own zero labels but I happily went along for the ride.
Season 1 is amazing and underrated as hell! Sn: who really wants Aidan back?!
Not me. I hated Aiden.
Literally my favourite show of all time! So happy you made a video about it ❤️
Yeah! I completely agree with you watching this at the same age as they were! Wow, a different perspective! Thank you for this video
As a GenXer who watched the show when it premiered and aired, I never forgot that Sam hit on Big first. It colored every interaction they had together. It was ingrained in her introduction: "She had the kind of delusional self-confidence that made men like Ross Perot run for President."🤣
It also wasn't just about being thirty 25-years ago, it was about what the 90s represented: A time of peace and prosperity where some truly did vote for people based on their looks and we wore less and less as the AIDS crisis came to an end and we could have more liberated sex. (Trojan stock was 📈, lol.) It was a joyful time of no PC bs and more freedom :) Good video.✌
Yes! S1 Carrie was positively SNIDE about Sam a lot of the time.
i love that ur 32, if i was judging by your voice id think you’re 16 haha, but this was a lovely video and the music with the tone of your voice is very soothing!!! love
Nice video. Makes me want to watch Season 1 again.
GO FOR IT!
I loved this video. I would love too see you make a longer video deep diving into SATC
Love watching recaps, especially of season 1.
I never understood the fashion of the show, but I appreciate the breakdown!
Also, the author's name is Candace, not Cadence 😊
Keep up the good work!
So sick of critiques that complain Carrie didn’t dress like they would, on that budget.
I loved this style video! SATC is my all time fav - going to revisit season 1
Sorry girl I have to subscribe to your channel in the moment you scream out " guuurl I cutted you out because 25 years ago you tried.." I m stil laughing..... kkkkkkkkk I loved this review !
My all time favourite show hands down 💖 👠 🛍
Please do all the seasons!!! I loved learning all the facts!!
Aidan is too good for Carrie. I hope they don't try to get them back together. They have nothing in common and they do not have the same life goals.
I'm 30 and watching for the first time. Now on season 3 it feels like they have lost a little of that magic from the earlier episodes
I agree... The earlier seasons felt uniquely authentic and raw whereas from season 4 this show feels more like a classic rom-com with an extremely big costume budget
I didn’t know that people watch just some of the seasons, I watch everything from the start 😅😅 and Chanel about SATC - follow immediately
well the episodes are quite autonomous and they rarely reference each other so it's easy just to pick a general vibe. like do i want to watch a pregnant miranda, or charlotte and trey trying to convince on bunny's orchids, carrie with aidan, carrie with burger etc
The articles are long but they’re a good read. I can’t imagine they’d make a whole series if they weren’t good. Just read the one about the bicycle boys.
Omg, Kasia! When you said you’re almost the same age as the main quartet, I was shocked! You voice made me think you’re in your early 20s. But it doesn’t matter because the content is, as always, amazing ❤
aw, thank you so much ❤️ actually you are not the first person who thought I'm much younger judging by my voice so I guess you are onto something 😂
I always laugh no matter the season of SATC and that's why I still watch. Also, the writer Candace Bushnell's first name is mispronounced which was interesting to me because I thought that was a fairly common name.
I can listen to this all day. Love SATC
Wow I’m so happy UA-cam recommended your video I’m in need of some SATC fix now that I don’t have hbo anymore. ❤”subscribed “
Oh i loved this series, the episode with the tantra/yoga teacher.. 😂🤣
Yes the guy saving sex tape was very cringe 😬 I’m glad they address it’s illegal
i enjoyed this video very much 😍
Trip down memory lane!
I absolutely loved season 1 it was more serious and relatable also the fashion was more normal like carrie wore sweatpants etc.
Are you kidding? The entire show is mostly based around the most elite fashion every season. The wardrobe department was one of the most important parts of the show!!! They always look incredible, it's about fashion and style and money and power , duh! The city! They, and their houses, always look incredible.
Season one is my favourite
I really enjoyed this. Thank you. This my favorite show. Especially 1st season 1. I wanted my own apartment before I even understood rent.
hey Kasia, thanks for this. I'd just like to let you know that Candace is pronounced CANdace and not CADence. I agree the fashions were great in season 1 :)
Everybody talks about it actually lol
I always related to miranda the most from s1.
i love all seasons but i Carrie is a real mess, I liked Carrie and Aiden the best and then she went back to Big 🙈
the most shocking thing to me was, after all that struggle being finally a couple they let Big die in the first season of Just like that? 😩😩😩 like whyyyy 😢😢
Bc he had some allegations against him so they had to get rid of him
its candace, pronounced 'can-diss'
oh my bad, thanks for letting me know xx
Thank you, that was driving me bananas! Candace Bushnell is a famous author, and it hurt my soul each time I heard the name mispronounced lol.
Yes season 1 and 2 are a league of their own. Season 3 was great, but no as fabulous as the first two, Aidan was the only thing worthwhile about season 3 and he deserved better.
The title of this video is meant sarcastically, right? Because that gets acknowledged A LOT.
Thank you for that interesting analysis and thank you for using your voice and not an unsufferable fried voice that makes many satc analysis unwatchable.
estoy viéndola ahora mismo y me inspira todo lo que veo 🥹
People are too mean towards SJP. I always thought she was cute, but not in a typical way. I certainly never ever thought she was what people say thats mean. I thought she had a unique appeal. She has a amazing figure to. I always thought she was stunning in the movie "Honeymoon In Vegas".
Aiden???? He wasn’t even her style! They literally bash u over the head with how different and incompatible they are. He’s too simple for her
The Sex and the City articles are REALLY good writing. Cannot believe you don't like them!
aidan is everything. would have been my one and only lmaoo
When Samantha hits on Mr Big, it is right after Carrie said she had never met him in her life.
Babe all we and every magazine ever did in the 2000s was talk about the fashion
Charlotte has million times better style then Carrie in my opinion.
1:58 love her hair!!
right?? i think so too
First season was the best season. Best episode was the pilot.
Haha that's maybe my least favorite episode. To each their own, right?
oh god i miss this show, i rewatched it twice. any recommendations for something similar?
what about desperate housewives or the l word?
@@KasiaSopniewska i watched DH (loved it!!!), is the L word similar vibe to satc???
i'd say it's exactly like satc, but more diverse and no one is straight
@@KasiaSopniewska interesting.
@@Sarah-yj9zl @kasiasopniewska Why Women Kill is just as good as desperate housewives. both made by mark cherry. whole series is only 20 episodes.
I loved this show and didn’t really watch it until 10 yrs later but i really could relate to every episode in some way especially some of the scenarios of bad dates lol. Had a few myself and how you and your friends would gossip about the men lol
2:28 mIRC...good old days
I agree with what you say about big should have ended by season 2 but I would be sad if it we didn’t get the big and Carrie ending of season 6.
i think it would be very progressive
@@KasiaSopniewska yes your right.
It’s when you notice that the main character is a shallow alcoholic narcissist. You see that times has changed. Seinfeld and sac has in common that they normalised the view that it was somehow empowering to be self obsessed and toxic. Carrie’s sex addiction and lack of self awareness is obvious around Adan. And when she also cheats on him, most should see that she is totaly toxic. The red flags are all there, but most viewers are consumed by the shoe’s and brands.
It’s a tv drama? chill out lmao
Seinfeld never made their characters as something to aspire to be, as role models. They are meant to be laughed at for being so selfish and neurotic.
Entertaining is far more important than role models. Though the moral centre should be felt somewhere in the show, but not in a preachy way.
no, people talk about it all the time
I have often sat down with the Girls over café breakfast, seeking advise about a man.🦊🦊🦊
Your commentary is fascinating!
Bonjour du Vermont. 🦊🦊🦊
All SATC show and movies are Fashion Amazing... Effeing Patricia Field fantastically bossed it...!!! With her HUGE stylist talent...!! The show is a HIGH reference for Fashion..!!! And EVERYBODY knows it, and TALKS about it for decades ...! Do ur HOMEWORK ..! 🙃🙃🙃🙃
Literally everyone takes about it
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I find that I kind of like Candace Bushnell pronounced as Cadence.
Season 1 was really good I like the fashion in this season this show was indeed groundbreaking even though in some parts it's aged badly
Aidan stan ❤
This is a really late comment, but I wanted to adress your comment @ around the 8 minute mark: "Carrie gets mad at Big for seeing other women, even though they didnt discuss exclusivity." I'm not sure how old you are, but if you're close in age to me at all (25) then you're probably used to the idea of relationships as 'non-exclusive until otherwise specified'. Frankly, that's a VERY recent development and it's not really fair to project that idea onto a show made in the 1990s! From what basically every person over 50 that I know has told me - in the 80s and 90s, it was generally understood that you did NOT date multiple people unless you specifically clarified that you intended to do that. If you went on several dayes with someone, and it came out that you were also dating someone else, you would absolutely have been considered a cheater. A lot of the discourse around 'exclusive vs non-exclusive dating' is a product of the Internet and simply did not exist in the 1990s.
Loved the video BTW - just felt like I needed to make this clarification! I agree that Carrie is portrayed as a terrible communicator, but I don't think that this is why!
Season 1 ws good. Rest become too obsessed with sex n only sex. And it just became predictable
Imagine dating a younger man named SKIPPER, though...
*looks down at my iphone Rose gold 6se .......
Um cause we did we just didn’t make blogs on it cause YT wasn’t really a thing then.
THERE IS A REBOOT?
It's called And Just Like That. Set in present times with the same cast. No Samantha character, though.
@@lyndylou3642 thanks! Ah no Samantha? Thats too bad, shes my fav. I still have the two movies to watch tho :)
@@bianca3344 the first movie is tolerable and the second is an abomination. Be warned! (I still watched them in theaters though!!)
It is CANDACE! NOT 'Cadence'.
We see no.botox in the pilot!!!
Gen X who watched this show when it aired i was 24 at the time . Im clearly in the minority among the fandom- I strongly dislike Aiden and Steve, never been a fan. Smith is the only one i really loved cause Im Samantha stan ..
all this great work on the video and the creator doesn’t learn how to pronounce “candace”.
i'm really sorry about that
@@KasiaSopniewska We all make mistakes girly, not the end of the world so don’t worry! :) great video
It’s cringeworthy but a great video nonetheless 👏🏾
What started the whole 'stan' thing?....
@wellofcire I'm pretty sure this word originated from Eminem's song
@@KasiaSopniewska oh WEEEEIRD....'Song'...? Oh, I thought he wrapped...or, whatEVER.....lol...but hey that's a theory: nice to have some sort of explantion at times......your videos are supreme by the way....

Oh, another reminding that AJLT is pure garbage.
I’m an ultra fan of SATC and it kills me that you keep butchering CANDICE BUSHNELL’s name 😮
I was sick of the Product placement. It was everywhere... They had a whole episode on Birkin bags and Ralph Lauren paint... It was so hedonistic and shallow. It was unrelatable. The show is very much a Fantasy. Remember that. And only two of the women worked... Samantha barely even worked tbh...
