That Goku speech to Freeza is only in the English dub. Goku doesn't care so much about being a hero, but prefers having a good fight and becoming stronger
Accurate, though I prefer the dub over all, it's only that speech and a few other odd notes that really makes him seem all that different from the original character otherwise he's similar enough, it's not like he doesn't constantly talk about how he loves fighting in the English dub.
in the LA dub he speaks more about helping others, that talk about battling is also present but he only speaks about being excited with strong opponents while either expecting them in a tournament or at the battle field, is not like he is constantly looking for it, that said, he cares more about his training though
In the original dub, when Freeza asks Goku "What are you", he responds (something along the lines of): "You already know. I'm a Saiyan from planet Earth and I'm here to defeat you. A legendary warrior fueled by rage despite his peaceful heart. I'm Super Saiyan Son Goku!" This speaks of early DBs mindset of necessary violence to defeat pointless violence. Goku wasn't there to enjoy a battle with the emperor of the universe, he (ultimately) came to stop Freeza from causing more destruction. In the end, Goku spares him.
Von k I like the the consept as the mother of SO6P and her japanese mythology origins (Okami fans raise your hands), but I was very disappointed in her onscreen appearance (back when Naruto came out weekly). As an avid fan of Naruto before Shippuuden anime even started, I felt like her inclusion in the end (although "foreshadowed" by Madara, she was asspulled into existance) was way, WAY too rushed, and thus she lacked character and became a nameless run-of-the-mill final god boss of the series. She had absurd powers which didn't make a great deal of sense in story context, and I'm pretty sure Kishimoto made her as a failsafe in case Madara got too powerful 😅 which he totally did after gaining both Rinnegan and eating the Shinju fruit. tl;dr I like her design and backstory, I don't like her onscreen appearances at all. She lacks character (=she doesn't have a character), she's a brainless god puppet controlled by Zetsu.

An interesting connection to Buddhism, especially Mahayana Buddhism, that I think could be seen in Dragon Ball Z is that of the Bodhisattva and a common plot element seen throughout the Android Saga/Cell Saga. To give a brief summary for those who don't know, a Bodhisattva is an individual who has gained the ability to reach Nirvana but stays behind to help teach others to reach Nirvana as well. Just a quick disclaimer, I'm not a Buddhist nor do I believe in Buddhist teachings, I simply find it very fascinating, even if I don't fully understand it as much as someone like an actual Buddhist would. A common belief that I see throughout Buddhism is that by to achieve Nirvana, one must first understand how the world truly works, that there is a, for lack of a better term, "correct" way of viewing the world and that be seeing the world from this viewpoint, a person has taken an extra step further towards Nirvana. Similarly, during the Cell Saga, we see Vegeta, Future Trunks, Goku and Gohan training to gain more power from the Super Saiyan transformation and utilize the form to it's fullest, which I think could be interpreted as an allegory for striving to reach Nirvana. Vegeta and Future Trunks manage to achieve Grades 2 and 3 of the form, but still retains and even magnifies the forms disadvantages, such as the aggressive behavior that comes with the form. On the other hand, when Goku and Gohan are training together, Goku realizes how inefficient the forms actually are and opts to train himself and Gohan to master both the mental state of the form as well as the forms energy output, being able to subconsciously maintain the form in a more peaceful state of mind.
Yes, in the end of GT, Goku ascended to heaven (or outside of Samsara, worldly suffering, and entered Parinirvana). This theme is the main reason why Dragon Ball was so great because of how it relates to Goku and Vegeta's characters and the relevance it has to real life work. Goku not being brought up in Saiyan society didn't follow their way of thinking: The idea that hard work means less than social hierarchy and one's value is set entirely in stone by statistics. He developed an outlook in life that was in conjunction with his own purity due to Master Roshi's teachings of there's always someone better. His purity being his unshakeable Saiyan nature which goes against the conventional idea on what it means to be pure of heart. Accepting there's always someone better leads to a more healthy mindset when it comes to work (Especially in sports) because one's mind wouldn't be focus mainly on besting others which could lead to disappointment and lack of satisfaction with their own achievements as opposed to the satisfaction one gets by not focusing too much on besting others which would lead to a more happy and healthy mind. Focusing too much on besting others can negatively affects one will to do work, because of the anger and frustration one can have by not besting others. That very frustration can hold one back from achieving the heights one could've achieve because it could lead to them overworking themselves or not pace themselves properly. This could lead to even depression. This negative mindset that is the opposite of Roshi's teachings is represented through Vegeta's character. Vegeta embodies the negative effects that come with not following Master Roshi's teachings, hence why he couldn't catch up with Goku. Although Vegeta is more gifted than Goku he allowed himself to be more concern with outside thoughts such as social status and money (Mainly social status) which hindered his great potential. The best example of this in DBZ was in the Cell arc when Vegeta couldn't achieve Mastered Super Saiyan like Goku despite being a better genius on paper because he allowed his anger towards not being the best consume him and could only aim for the forced variation of the MSSJ known as the grade forms (Ultra Super Saiyan), which had negative effects of stamina consumption and speed decrease, similar to how athletes who are unsatisfied with improvement for improvement sake rely on forced methods such as steroids to get better, which in the end can led to side effects such as anger and depression, which Vegeta had in the end of the Cell arc because of the mindset he placed on his training.
You missed the point of the cell saga. Goku became stronger than Vegeta because Goku trained with his kid, Gohan, and wanted to empowered him (Gohan) to become better than himself and take the mantle of hero. By training together, they achieved MSSJ. Vegeta in the other hand, could not achieved this form because he was still a dick at this time of the series and only trained for himself instead of training together with his future son Trunks because he wanted to be number 1 above anybody else. This was proven when Vegeta appeared before imperfect cell declaring that Trunks was the second best after himself, and also how Trunks didn't want to show off his power in front of Vegeta in order to protect his pride. Goku training with Gohan was the moment that widen the gap between Goku amd Vegeta which he never recovered, at least not in DBZ. Besides, the someone is always better than you doesn't match here. Goku was borned from a lower class with a power level of 2, Vegeta was born as an elite class with a power level of 10,000? (Correct me if i am wrong with the number). But Goku was able to reach Vegeta's level and even surpassed him achieved through sheer training and martial arts skills. You could said Goku is better at training than Vegeta because he is more experienced in doing so since childhood, while Vegeta only started training in the martial arts latter in live after meeting with Goku and his friends.
you know good dubs were a relatively new/rare thing back then, he got alot better since, also he wasnt there 1st choice. though dragonball is one of the few shows i simple cant watch in Japanese, cant stand gokus childish voice
"The world's most confortable pair of ultra-soft underwear"? Wow, the english dub is must be super lame if they're going to censor Oolong asking for Bulma's panties.
TheBlackCloakedMan Oh dude...have you even heard the DB American dub? It's one of the worst on the planet, especially Namu. He just has a racist ass Hindu accent. People still defend it, though...
I might never have heard the american dub. Only 5min or so of Team Four Star's DBZ Abridged, which must have been channeling the american dub. People seem to enjoy that at least, but I certainly didn't. I think most of the Dragon Ball videogames feature the japanese dub instead of the american one, so I don't know if there would be many opportunities to be exposed to it. Though, granted, I think even the japanese dub is awful, by virtue of having Goku be a grown ass man with a woman's voice.
It's less that they wanted to and more that they had to for it to be shown in the US on daytime TV. Japan (particularly in the 80s) doesn't see a problem with sex jokes on kids' shows, but things are different in the west. That's why they went back and dubbed everything uncut later. And personally, I find the line "the world's most comfortable pair of ultra soft underwear" to be a lot funnier.
2:00 Trip-pit-ik-ka ? I always thought it was Trip-pee-tar-kar; in the playground when I was a kid we had a song and as I recall it rhymed with mother......
You know as someone who had watched all of DBZ and gt (ye it was trash) and many other action anime like Naruto. I sat down and decided to watch the original Dragon Ball and it did not disappoint. I loved that down to earth feeling ya know? I know they were still fighting but the classic traveling feel with your band of misfits and making friends/ enemies along the way was very nice. Btw rip my mans Oolong harem.
I know you didn't make this directly for me, but tbis came up shortly after i commented the request. This was amazing and I hope you return to the topic again because i know there is so much to explore, from Gokus reluctance to kill after training with God (Kami), or the duality of Kami and the Demon King Piccolo. And thats still just Dragon Ball. There's still a ton to explore in Z, Super, or even GT. You guys rock and i love what you do. Thank you again!
Thank you for this interpretation of my favorite anime. I would say anyone interested in the confluence of anime/manga and Buddhism should read the 8 part Buddha by Osamu Tesuka.
I think bulma character is great the contrast of her being a genius heiress but wanting something so superficial a boyfriend also Roshi is a great twist on the stoic master instead being hedonistic and perverted
So the dragon scroll being blank makes sense in more ways than one. The scroll being blank but reflective was to say 'Hey, you don't need anything special because you already have everything you could need.' That's also sort of what happened in Lego Ninjago movie where the characters go on this long and dangerous journey only to discover the weapons they needed were inside them all along. Garmadon wasn't defeated using those weapons or the giant live action cat but compassion and forgiveness.
omg thanks for covering this show. Its ignored by most of my friends who flock to dbz because super saiyans. im glad there are so many people out there who have seen and appreciate the admittedly obscure show
Personally, I like what Shenron says at the end of GT, that the Dragonballs were created to be a thing of extraordinary magic and power, to be revered not for the ease of their method, but for the dream of never needing to use them.
i don't think theres an overarching theme, each major arc sets a different tone to the series, Yorknew and Chimera Ant being the most easy to understand what its all about
Favorite episode so far. Philosophy of DBZ post Dragon Ball and after The Squanch talks about Rick and Morty, you guys should do a Dragon Ball discussion =D
I loved DBZ as a kid but DB was a bit before my time. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it when I watched it for the first time (far superior to GT imo).
That comment of violence is sometimes better than over-pacification is a key theme in Gohan’s fight with Cell. How he, a pacifist by nature scared of his power, must come to grips with this and use his power to stop the evil Cell who threatens all life in the Galaxy.
That representation of goku of dbz talking to freezer is straight wrong if you wanna talk about the author's point of view, cause that is the English translation, in which they decided to make goku way more like superman rather than the original version in Japanese.
It's not so much that they "decided" to do it. Funimation didn't have a Japanese person in the studio to translate the Japanese dialogue, so they relied on a Japanese-to-English dictionary. And it was the 90's so they didn't have reliable translation software. So a lot of the meaning got lost in translation. The Funimation dub of DBZ Kai fixes these issues and is a lot more faithful to the source material.
Dragon Ball is a commentary on the fear of nuclear power and climate change. Pilaf's squad represent the Russians post-WWII. Dragon Balls represent nuclear power. Son Goku represents humanity's only hope, pure innocence. Bulma represents the scientists on the forefront of nuclear research, single-minded in her ambition, but she also represents the average person with her obsession with vanity and convenience. The pairing of Bulma and Goku suggests the necessity of child like purity in achieving proper use of nuclear power. I started rewatching the first episodes (subbed) recently lol
This video is amazing, but I was expecting to see how Goku's journey reflects the movement of the Spirit in Hegel's "Phenomenology of Spirit". Or that's how I always saw it anyway. Maybe for the sequel?
well according to 3.0 is: if you want to have your own opinion and defend yourself you will get punish by a bunch of cunts that won't admit everything is their fault.
You know there are times in the shows or movies were Goku actively seeks out fights for nothing but the drill even going as far as to give his enemies a boost to make the fight more of a challenge.Hell one origin movie of DB in particular has a character say he doesn't like fighting and son Goku is genuinely perplexed of anyone not liking to fight.
I think there are also Buddhist references in Z: 1. Young Gohan's high potential, his occasional lack of confidence and Goku's encouragement, and baby Goku's low fighting potential. It's similar to the concept that all beings have the potential to attain the highest level of enlightenment. This applies if we think of the villains as our own afflictions or the difficulties we're facing. 2. Trunks' time travel resolving the past issues create different futures. When the conditions change, the outcome could be different.
Have you guys ever even read journey to the west it's about sun wukong messing with the heavens to proves he's worthy of being a God and the journey was a form of redemption for the deeds he committed that got him sealed under a mountain and to add on to that your using the English that force goku to sound like a hero even though he doesn't care about doing the right thing like ever.
Afro Brazilian firstly a the use the English dub because it's easier for them to do it they said so it the previous philosophy video B they said it is a metaphor the journey to enlightenment not sure if it read the manga but Goku does act like that just he is more focused on fighting than being a hero
The English dub and the Original source both exist. Just because one has been changed doesn't invalidate it's existence nor does it inherently make it wrong. It's just different. And there's no harming in quoting it.
I remember being far too passionate about a dub of a cartoon made for adolescents. The only reason I am not filled with shame over this is that I was in the prime Shounen demographic when the original dub aired.
7:27 I think that might just be something from the Dubb... Considering that on the original version and most notable on the latest episodes Goku would probably be saying: "I want to get strong and fight you... you look strong, lets fight!"
He never said "Let's doom multiple universes just for a tournament", genius. Imagine if you suggested a video game competition and then the organizer suddenly said that the winner would be the only one left alive. A better example would be him stopping Krillin from killing Vegeta just so they could have a rematch.
Philosophy of Dragon Ball Screaming makes you stronger Death is reversible if you just wish it and All Villains can become good guys if not you can defeat them through multiple episodes
Death is avoidable in Buddhism via reincarnation and the concept of destructive desire is present to an extent in every villain (Vegeta wants to assert his superiority, Freeza is so greedy it eventually causes his demise _three times_, Cell's lust for perfection becomes his undoing). So in a sense, you're pretty on the money.
I like that you used footage from the 90s Hong Kong television version of Journey to the West (the one starring Dicky Cheung). That was my childhood, man. Besides Dragonball, etc.
for the people commenting that "the speech goku gave freeza isnt in the original version therefore it isnt valid", my take on it goes as such: when dealing with different versions, or takes, on the story/source material (and yes, i include dubs and localizations in this), i think both should be viewed as separate entities, that may resemble each other, but that usually differ, sometimes in significant and even fundamental ways. So, although the original goku doesnt fit as well with the ideas being presented here, there is a version that does. if you'd like to see a more thoughtfull and detailed explanation of the idea i presented here, i'd sugest Explanation Point's "A Defense of Dubs" video, as we have very similar views on the matter, so i dont think it's worth to basically just re-write the script from his video here, whren i could just redirect to his amazing work on it.
rafaellerescapone wow your desperate to make what they say are right. Listen dubs are just that dubs you can't just say because the dub Goku fits in with what they say makes it right. Because they say toriyamas work. They are spreading miss information. It's not what the author intended. Yes it's true that in the dub Goku was like this. But this shows that they haven't done there research enough to even know of anime only scene and dub only lines. This goes to show that maybe you should be skeptical of what their saying.
This is actually a serious problem, It seems that the one of the points made is that Goku also later in the series fights to prevent violence, but it is not always true, in fact the Freezer case may be THE WORST ARGUMENT YOU COULD MADE. When Goku transformed into super saiyan he wasn't fighting to protect all living things like it is implied in the flawed english dub. I rewatched the episode, Goku overall was very confident that he can crush Frieza when he went super saiyan. Earlier he said that Frieza can destroy planets but he cannot defeat him. In the famous speech mentioned in the video Goku was actually saying that he represents saiyans (wants to fulfill Vegeta's wish he told him when he was dying, it is first of all an act of honour), he is filled with anger (and will take revenge on Frieza) and he is Goku, a legendary super saiyan. I think that is the best translation of what he said and what he meant. So basically he wants to take revenge on Frieza for what he has done.
well, i think then it comes to the old argument of who possesses the story, the author, and thus their intention, or the fans, and thus only the end result and its cultural legacy should be taken into account. i do understand that viewing it the way i do goes against the mangaka's original idea, but the way i see it manga goku, sub goku and dub goku are three different characters, and should be interpreted as such.
7:06 "This more nuanced understanding of violence would pop up in Toriyama's later work as well" *Uses a a wholly inaccurate dub to illustrate his point* I'm sorry, I don't mean to be a weeb, but don't use 90s FUNimation's writing when talking about Akira Toriyama's intent.
Goku ONLY fights for fun. He is not a hero. He views his wife and kids as just good friends, nothing more. What YOU grew up with was all lies, and NOT Akira Toriyama's vision in any way (in fact he hated people trying to make Goku a hero)
You'd want to watch "Why the Companion Interview is Biased" by Kairi Yajuu Analysis. She goes through why we shouldn't take that interview at face value.
Goku in the Namekian Saga when he was loosing the battle realize that if he couldn't defeat Freezer all of his friends, his wife, his son and his home planet would be destroyed, so he was not a selfish person he was fighting for others, he turned super saiyan because Freezer killed his best bud
In many ways, most definitely. But I think the Androids/Cell Saga kind of beats it in certain ways. There was so much excellently played escalation and massive stakes.
Sigh. Classic American DB fan mistake, citing Toriyama and then proceeding to use examples from the English Dub which are 90% uncannon. Not to mention you guys' inability to understand that Tori is a mangakka not a tv producer, he didn't write episodes he wrote chapters. Goku's journey to a super saiyin was one of Buddhist enlightenment, although I doubt you all did the research to see that the kanji on his back when he arrived at Namek was the character for enlightenment. He attained a pure heart as is necessary for enlightenment so that when it was broken by Krillin's death he could become a SSJ. The dialogue from the actual canon dragonball demonstrates that but instead you opted for something that was completely uncannon and forced it to fit the narrative of the video. You guys so a great job on movies and thus like watchmojo you should stick to just that. Leave the Japanese stuff for people who understand the culture and language
*after bulma flashes her vagina* "Yeah, it's a weird show" or it's just sexist. Any lewd bawdy innuendo moments in Dragon Ball were made for the male gaze. It's not a reason to never watch the show, by all means this show is awesome. It's just a common trope in anime. Most men are phobic in calling out the sexism in the media which baffles me to no end. It's only until men fear their teenage daughters dating boys telling them the creepiest shit you don't think twice on, "I know how those boys think, I was one myself." Eww. So anyway, not a lecture it's just interesting how no one points this out.
Really? Cause I can pull up an entire roster in western animation where the male characters flash themselves. Must be sexism towards men, right? No, it's just rule of funny. Hate to break it to you, but not everything is sexist. God damn, you just made me defend an animated 13 year old revealing themselves. Freakin' SJWs.

That was art. Well done.

I think we need a second part for DBZ and a third part for DB super. For example, super's tournament of power is Mahayana vs Theravada philosophies
Isn't the blank scroll also in Kung Fu Panda?
Yes.
Jeremiah Paredes Likely in reference to Journey To The West.
get out of here
Yeah, but they clearly don't trust their audience in that movie at all, so it's also kind of mirrored, like "look! You're the answer!"
But Kung Fu Panda doesn't spek about enlightenment, it's just about zeroes becoming heroes for no reason other than comedy.
So with this can we expect a philosophy on dragon ball z and beyond?
Essentially this
Fuck yes! Been waiting for this one
instaBlaster...
Surprised this didn't take 5 episodes
Do a video on Goku's sh*t parenting philosophy
Goku's a horrible dad, but a great Saiyan dad. Compared to Vegeta, though, Goku sucks.
you know good dubs were a relatively new/rare thing back then, he got alot better since, also he wasnt there 1st choice. though dragonball is one of the few shows i simple cant watch in Japanese, cant stand gokus childish voice
Hey Piccolo! raise my kid, lol
Piccolo is the best dad ever
Ironically, that "childish" voice is an old lady lmao
TheBlackCloakedMan: You're lame. Who the hell watches Dragonball subbed. Stupid weeb.
I don't. I watched a good dub instead.
That live action PIG!!! I HAVE NIGHTMARES NOW
This is great!! It’s great to understand what messages Dragon Ball gives.

Yes please the Boondocks!!
darkdragonnasir that would be cool.
The "nonviolence" in OG Dragon Ball thing actually kinda makes sense now, because Akira Toriyama said in an interview that he doesn't like fighting.
'Ally to good. Nightmare to you.'
-Definitely a Toriyama quote and not some BS funimation made up. Definitely.
The very first few episodes of DB are so ridiculously funny. They are worth rewatching.
This series has everything boys 11-48 could possibly need.

Thank god i suggested for Wisecrack to do this video a few months back. Seeing this video come up on my sub feed made my day. Thanks guys
Waiting for the 1080p buffer bar is like charging a spirit bomb
I know you didn't make this directly for me, but tbis came up shortly after i commented the request. This was amazing and I hope you return to the topic again because i know there is so much to explore, from Gokus reluctance to kill after training with God (Kami), or the duality of Kami and the Demon King Piccolo. And thats still just Dragon Ball. There's still a ton to explore in Z, Super, or even GT.
You guys rock and i love what you do. Thank you again!
Do Cowboy Bebop next
Sspace Dandy would be interesting
There's tons of stuff like that already
RIP Akira Toriyama 😢
Thank you for this interpretation of my favorite anime. I would say anyone interested in the confluence of anime/manga and Buddhism should read the 8 part Buddha by Osamu Tesuka.
I think bulma character is great the contrast of her being a genius heiress but wanting something so superficial a boyfriend also Roshi is a great twist on the stoic master instead being hedonistic and perverted
Philosophy of psycho-pass please. I highly recommend the anime you can find it on youtube if your interested.
This is what I've subscribed for. You talk about a show I like, in a way I've never imagined.
Love this series so good keep up the great work.
I want to see neon Genesis evangelions philosophy.
omg thanks for covering this show.

Favorite episode so far. Philosophy of DBZ post Dragon Ball and after The Squanch talks about Rick and Morty, you guys should do a Dragon Ball discussion =D

Akira is the deffition of an accidental genious. Thank you for the video, Dragon Ball is amazing.
7:15 but he never actually said that tho, its just a mistranslated scene
this is actually a spot on analysis of buddhism and dragon ball.
I loved DBZ as a kid but DB was a bit before my time. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it when I watched it for the first time (far superior to GT imo).
Hell, I think DB is better than DBZ.
That comment of violence is sometimes better than over-pacification is a key theme in Gohan’s fight with Cell. How he, a pacifist by nature scared of his power, must come to grips with this and use his power to stop the evil Cell who threatens all life in the Galaxy.
Do more philosophy of Dragon Ball! Like if you agree
@@lordilluminati5836 ikr lol
This video must be so good it recommended me the same video twice in the span of 2 videos
@@zaidabraham7310 ty for your answer, quite interesting
Dragon Ball is a commentary on the fear of nuclear power and climate change. Pilaf's squad represent the Russians post-WWII. Dragon Balls represent nuclear power. Son Goku represents humanity's only hope, pure innocence. Bulma represents the scientists on the forefront of nuclear research, single-minded in her ambition, but she also represents the average person with her obsession with vanity and convenience. The pairing of Bulma and Goku suggests the necessity of child like purity in achieving proper use of nuclear power. I started rewatching the first episodes (subbed) recently lol
Where are the Rick and morty episode breakdown?
man this was great if you can get that much out of the Emperor Pilaf arc can't wait to see what you get out of the Red Ribbon Army arc

oh man, the scene where Goku goes Super Saiyan for the first time still gives me chills.

Ah yes, finding Dragon Balls to wish for a boyfriend. I almost forgot that's also an option.
I think there are also Buddhist references in Z:
Can't use the English dub if it has a different message to the source.
The English dub and the Original source both exist. Just because one has been changed doesn't invalidate it's existence nor does it inherently make it wrong. It's just different. And there's no harming in quoting it.
If you're trying to unravel the philosophy behind something, a translation that changes the story is useless.
I remember being far too passionate about a dub of a cartoon made for adolescents. The only reason I am not filled with shame over this is that I was in the prime Shounen demographic when the original dub aired.
7:27 I think that might just be something from the Dubb... Considering that on the original version and most notable on the latest episodes Goku would probably be saying: "I want to get strong and fight you... you look strong, lets fight!"
uh... goku fights for peace? Dude doomed multiple universes to erasure just because he was bored and wanted to fight.
DBS never happened lol.

666melodeath666 ROFL that is 100% correct.
That is Z
666melodeath666 pretty much :P
DBZ is pretty much a completely different show. In themes and content.
Thank you Wisecrack for making the best philosophical case-study video on my favorite anime. :)
PLEASE do "The Philosophy of The Filthy Frank Show" or "Meaning Behind The Filthy Frank Show"!!!
I can sum up the philosophy in two words:
FUUSUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
I like that you used footage from the 90s Hong Kong television version of Journey to the West (the one starring Dicky Cheung). That was my childhood, man. Besides Dragonball, etc.
for the people commenting that "the speech goku gave freeza isnt in the original version therefore it isnt valid", my take on it goes as such:
when dealing with different versions, or takes, on the story/source material (and yes, i include dubs and localizations in this), i think both should be viewed as separate entities, that may resemble each other, but that usually differ, sometimes in significant and even fundamental ways.
It goes against author intent thus the english dub is plainly wrong.Respect the creator.
well, i think then it comes to the old argument of who possesses the story, the author, and thus their intention, or the fans, and thus only the end result and its cultural legacy should be taken into account. i do understand that viewing it the way i do goes against the mangaka's original idea, but the way i see it manga goku, sub goku and dub goku are three different characters, and should be interpreted as such.
FUCK OFF. They used a false Dub translation to back up their shitty theory. You are totally missing the fucking point.
The Goku speech to Frieza was a dub exclusive change and against Toriyama's intentions.
7:06
"This more nuanced understanding of violence would pop up in Toriyama's later work as well"
*Uses a a wholly inaccurate dub to illustrate his point*
I'm sorry, I don't mean to be a weeb, but don't use 90s FUNimation's writing when talking about Akira Toriyama's intent.
Because that guy is a bad writer?
It's not being a weeb, it's just correcting them when they were flat out wrong.
Dragon Ball is so much fun. As badass as DBZ was, I think at the end I missed the adventures of goku and bulma.
Buddhism is honestly my favorite religion.
You ‘gotta love how the villain is the only one in this arc is the only one who wants to do something major with the dragon balls.
Goku ONLY fights for fun. He is not a hero. He views his wife and kids as just good friends, nothing more. What YOU grew up with was all lies, and NOT Akira Toriyama's vision in any way (in fact he hated people trying to make Goku a hero)
The Real Rokuro he hates it? Really?
The Real Rokuro thats in dragonball z not dragonball
You'd want to watch "Why the Companion Interview is Biased" by Kairi Yajuu Analysis. She goes through why we shouldn't take that interview at face value.
Kibate this guy gets it
Goku in the Namekian Saga when he was loosing the battle realize that if he couldn't defeat Freezer all of his friends, his wife, his son and his home planet would be destroyed, so he was not a selfish person he was fighting for others, he turned super saiyan because Freezer killed his best bud
I am really enjoying these anime philosophy videos!!
Original Dragon Ball is still best
yes, I said it - original Dragon Ball is superior to DBZ
In many ways, most definitely. But I think the Androids/Cell Saga kind of beats it in certain ways. There was so much excellently played escalation and massive stakes.
Hromovlad1 You're n the minority of people who think original Dragon. ball is the body.
This is such an upbeat philosophical video compare to your recent philosophical videos.
Is dragonball z cannon to dragonball?
Yes.
Cole Bahnsen they’re the same thing. Only the anime split them in 2. The manga great DBZ as the next arc that just had a timeskip
Cole Bahnsen It is for the most part. Movies are not considered "canon." Also, any filler in DBZ is not considered canon.
Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and DRAGON ball super are all cannon, Dragon Ball GT is not cannon

You know? this video can explain perfectly the end of Dragon Ball Super, which was broadcast a few hours ago.

So anyway, not a lecture it's just interesting how no one points this out.
i think you're both right. anime does sexism soooo weird
And the fact Bulm was 13 when she did it opens up a whole other uncomfortable conversation.
I notice plenty of sexism towards men in anime, but this wasn't that conversation. Sorry if you were offended wherethetatosat
