  • Like manga artist ONE's previous work One Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100 features an overpowered protagonist unable to derive happiness from the thing that makes them "special." But what does it mean to be special? And can such a label actually bring us happiness?? In this Wisecrack Edition, we'll explore Mob and the other Espers' inability to reconcile their exceptionalism with their desire to live a good life.

      I agree, cause early on I would've figured soon after they let Mob join their club, they'd get annoyed at how he doesn't improve or improves at such a minuscule rate, and can never keep up with him, so they would end up kicking him out of the club or at least distance themselves from him. This was early enough where I'd say a tone for the series wasn't concretely established, so I was free to make these types of speculations. I'll also add that one of my favorite things that a story can do is subvert the viewers expectations, such as making it seem like a simple, safe, by the numbers story at first glance, then turning into something more smart and elaborate. That leaves a better impression than a story that starts off smart and elaborate.

      This show can be a bit confusing when it comes to "???" and "___%". This video gets a few things wrong. Here's a breakdown:
      “100%” is NOT Mob’s “power level”. It is a representation of how much he allows himself to feel an emotion. Mob’s story is his journey toward rediscovering old and new emotions that come with adolescence. It is stated multiple times that Mob locked away his emotions after a violent incident when he was younger and developed a complex around it. I’m incredibly annoyed by those who really don’t pay attention to this important fact.
      In the fight with Teru, “???” is an entirely different entity inside mob and it is hinted that it is the same entity that resulted in his brother’s injury when they were younger (It takes over when Mob is unconscious. Meaning, the narrative “counter” doesn’t register emotion which is why it is “???” instead of a percent). Mob only reaches “100%” (Sadness) when he regains consciousness and puts the school back together with that emotional surge. He personally believes that he causes these terrible incidents when he gets too emotional, but he is mistaken. Which is why there is a certain tragedy to Mob’s emotional complex.

    It's so easy for a series to say "you're not special" and "nobody is important", but I think mob psycho it's something else. And honestly the best advice I could give for what helped me was to just ease back into things bit by bit and not to force it all at once because when I did that at first it kind of just reversed any recovery I had made. I also know that just talking with people who have had similar experiences helps a lot so all the best with getting back into education or taking a different path once you're feeling up to it again.

    I personally think Mobs story is a refreshing counter narrative to a common shonen trope of responsibility to change an ailing adult world falling to the teenage protagonist. Mobs is a story set against the challenges of accepting the adult world and learning to function within it, lending as much heroism to these benign yet challenging acts as it would to the actions of a character like Naruto for existence if Naruto existed as an Esper determined to change the flaws of the world with his power and relationships. It's heartening to be told my little peon body is brave for doing that which I struggle to do instead of being told I'm insignificant for not being extraordinary

    • @LupineShadowOmega
      @LupineShadowOmega 5 років тому +90

      To be fair, Hellsing also makes that argument. Hellsing argues what it means to be human sure, but at the same time it acknowledges that humans are strong not just in spite of their limitations, but because of them. That life is worth living not because of its intrinsic value, but because it is a finite resource that we all have access to and all will end up struggling through until the bitter and vicious end. That's why Alucard's belief that only humans can destroy monsters is kind of beautiful, because it says that only the limited and the powerless can stop what is essentially power devoid of humanity and responsibility.

    While all this is true, I think you missed the central point. The story is about how an emotionally repressed child develops more. His constant fear of losing control of his powers and sparingly use them has caused him to deny a part of himself and hence bottle up his emotions in the process. This is what hindered his social skills too. It's only when he learns to express himself more is when his life becomes more fulfilling. Almost at the end of every episode, his powers go rampant when an emotion he was attempting to bottle up reaches a climax and the ability changes based on the emotion. This series explores how psychic ability is linked to emotion a lot too.

      Neither protag really goes out of their way to use their powers in any meaningful way.
      What's the point of having that kinda power if you never use it for anything?
      Saitama just lives a mundane life when he could be roaming around looking for challenges, or conquering, or doing literally anything that took advantage of his nigh-invulnerability, and Mob just wants to get the girl he has a crush on to notice him, and he doesn't even get that.
      What we have here are heroes who refuse the call to action, and spend most of the story continuing to do so until it's almost done.
      Yes, riveting stuff, that.

    • @WolframiteWraith
      @WolframiteWraith 5 років тому +104

      @@Jebbtube Saitama does go around looking for challenges. That's a big reason why he became a hero but he hasn't had any luck yet. He often runs to a scene and the big bads are either gone or still go out in one punch. Mob is just trying to live his best life and his concerns are pretty age appropriate. There is not really a call to action to refuse since the world or even many lives are not in danger like in most of these stories.

    • @ZanathKariashi
      @ZanathKariashi 5 років тому +25

      Because that's not the point.
      They have no interest in those things.
      Saitama DID go out looking for challenges..and there were none. By 2 years in, he could destroy everything on the planet (and the planet itself) in 1 punch if he felt like it (and even threatened to do so at one point after getting really stressed out). His last hope was Boros, something from beyond their world, who failed him and showed him that there was no hope to ever get that original battle high back even out in the universe at large, since by that point his every hero excuse had been shown a lie.
      saitama was massively depressed and listless, and was desperate for ANYTHING to distract him that, clinging to his hero for hobby work because it temporarily distracted him his problems, but soon it too got boring
      Thats why he basically gives up after Boros, and only gets a new spark reignited after his talk with King (though it takes awhile for him to figure out what he really wants to do, since as with his hero excuses, his throwing himself into video game addiction was just running away from the problem again).
      Mob is no different, and is struggling what societal pressure wants him to be (either in terms conforming like a Drone or expecting him to solve all of it's problems as a savior), when he doesn't actually want any of that.
      Touchiro got the same call Mob did, and took it to logical conclusion, becoming a Tyrant, because he let the desires of society to fix all it's problems for it crush his self during his trek around the world idealistically hoping to fix all the evils of the world but at cost of everything he personally held dear as he martyr'd himself for heroism, which eventually the realities of the world crushed his idealism into cynicism and eventually nihilism and decided to just fill that void inside him by going to the extremes of hedonism and domination to distract himself from his pain and emptiness and came to view his own life as so worthless due to that loss of self (despite his claims to contrary that he's overly selfish) that it would only have real meaning if he could lay a permanent Scar on the world that it would remember forever.

When they first met, Mob dazzled her with his inherent psychic abilities, but Tsubomi quickly grew bored of it and moved on to people more well-rounded and charismatic. Mob realized that no matter how powerful and special he seemed to be, that isn't and shouldn't be what defines him. Realizing that just because he's good at something doesn't mean that's what he's supposed to do and that being a better person is more important than being a special person.

People a a lot of times obstacles i have to avoid, not really humans and a lot of times i walk past someone i know without seeing them. In Episode 3 we learn in his past he was told he looks bored but mob is not. Again something i get sometimes. But the most interresting thing is the explosion where he has no controle over his action. I think it is like a meltdown someone autistic can have when he/she is overwhelmed by the surrounding. Mob is the very first character I can perfectly relate to. The social awkwardness, supressing emotions to stay rational, the strong dislike to hurt others, the outburst to relieve emotional stress, people taking advantage of your gullible and sometimes even naive personality... Never in my whole life did I find a fictional character that resembles me that much. And it beautifully shows that you can change some things about you to become a better person, but there are also some things you can't do anything about it. You are born with some traits you have to live with, regardless if you want to or not. But this seemingly unpleasant trait doesn't define who you are. It's not your talents and gifts, but the choices you make in your life. You are the one who decides which way you will go.
    The anime is really inspiring and hit close home often enough. Though I can't see why people are comparing Mob Psycho 100 to My Hero Academia. These two are completely different shows that can't be compared. They have both good and bad sides and My Hero Academia is rather a mainstream shonen that doesn't focuses so much on subversions like Mob Psycho 100. People who compare Mob Psycho 100 to MHA just because the espers have superpowers don't really understand the core of the first series and what it's trying to tell. MHA doesn't do anything new with the genre and just follows the same old formula. It's basically Naruto but with superheroes.

In a world were more and more people hate each other for no good reason, it's a reminder that fear is ultimately the motivation for lashing out at others, the need to feel secure and protected because the Other terrifies us. True strength lies in the ability to nurture power, but use it only as a means to halt aggression so that reason has a chance to take root. I fixed my feet and my whole body feels better. Before that it was learning to play the piano. I'm by no means a concert pianist... But just sitting down and learning a new skill or fixing a part of yourself that is broken is... Very cathartic. It makes the rest of the things you do during the day less soul draining. @@gentlekef8653 There's two kinds of flat feet - stable flat feet and flexible flat feet.
      The former is impossible to fix. This is a flat foot where even when you aren't load bearing on your foot, it's flat.
      The latter is possible to fix. This is a flat foot where there is an arch until you put weight on the foot, after which it collapses.
      The flexible flat foot is partially caused by genetics and if I didn't exercise 4 - 5 days a week, I wouldn't keep my arch. It's caused by weak joints and muscles in the structures of the foot and lower body chain.
      There are a dozen ways to fix your arch, but one thing I feel is important to recognize is that sometimes fixing your arch is actually fixing your shoulders and neck. Our whole body is connected. I "fixed my arches" and began working on other parts of my body, only to find when I fixed my neck and shoulders, my ARCH suddenly felt even stronger, like my upper body was pulled on my lower body chain to maintain good posture and further pulling up my arch.
      the basic exercises are:
      short foot contractions, a trillion short foot contractions. Doing stretches for your toes. Learning the importance of your big toe to stable foot posture. Reinforcing the stable tripod of your foot, and other lower body chain exercises like calf raises, lunges, squats, etc.
      It's been years since I worked on my arches so I'm a bit rusty - these days I'm mostly focused on my shoulders and wrists.
      google it though. Honestly, there are great postural guides out there. I'm entirely self-taught. You learn from experience what works and what doesn't. It's all trial and error. I'm... 3 years into my complete body transformation. Does not happen overnight. But I think for most people, just knowing it's even possible is a HUGE boost. Now, I may be a special case because I have hypermobile joints. While they're a curse inasmuch as they collapse without regular attention, they're a blessing because I can do absolutely ridiculous stretches which may not be available to regular people and may have helped me with my work.
      Regardless of this fact, you can ALWAYS be better off than you were before. Even if you never fix your issues completely, you can definitely improve them. I would focus on correcting gait, weaning yourself off orthotics if you can, learning how to breathe diaphramatically, improving your upper body posture, and strengthening your core and glutes. If you do these things you will find life far less painful

    I've been doing weight exercises for a few months, and that moment when I see actual progress and improvement is insanely satisfying. Trying your hand at something where you are literally at the bottom of the barrel, and then finally start to see it pay off is so motivating because you earned it.

    As a counterpoint, maybe look into the philosophy behind the plethora of anime where the main character is an overpowered nice dude capable of slaughtering armies without remorse before returning to his harem, usaully in a fantasy world. Beyond wish fufillment obviously

    Thi show has so many morals tbh , we can't just depict it as " You aren't the greatest in the world" but it also shows that the more you bottle up your emotions the more unstable you can get . It teaches us that healthy relationships can help overcome this sort of thing (Mogami arc). This show literally proves that we are the protagonist of our own life and should live it to the fullest together with the people around you. It doesn't matter what other people's opinion are towards you , trying to impress others shouldn't be a life goal but instead , we should reach for those who actually care abt us.
