I am growing corn 1st time ever and in containers. Sprouted them on wet paper towels... and then planted each one in a solo cup that i made holes in the bottom with a soldering iron ( lol it works and no breaks.) I also prepped my 5 gallon containers.... counter sinking the same amount of solo cups. When the sprouts hit 6-7 inches.... i plugged them into the containers in the preformed holes... like legos, easy-peasy, no roots tangles to mess with. I planted 2 per each 5 gallon container. I think 4 per would be better next time... my plants look a little stressed... as it has been hot. I think crowding them up a bit would give better protection. I am starting my next crop of the year now... same same... which should be ready... in the fall. Wish me luck back! Thanks for the information on sowing time/hours and spacing of the plants. This helped me alot.

I’ve never grown sweet corn before, but I soaked mine overnight and planted them at about 5 days, when the root was good and long and the plants were about 1.5” tall, 20 days in and they are about 6” now

I’ve read that corn roots don’t like to be disturbed so you shouldn’t even transplant them. It says that right on the pkg. of the Botanical Interests Corn Seeds.

My seeds were expired 2 years ago, after I had them laying around for 4 years in conditions that would - and has killed any other seeds laying around in those same conditions. All but 5 - out of 17 that were still in the open package - didn't sprout. They're growing perfectly fine, right on growth schedule, though I noticed the stem is a bit thinner on the old seeds compared to the new seeds I bought. Same variety though, according to the package. So it does have SOME impact it seems. But it just shows you how strong corn seeds actually are, and how much abuse they can take.
And because they were such old seeds I pre-soaked them for 24 hours instead of 12 hours to give them a better chance. Might have helped too.
This year I'm planting 30 seedlings in a raised bed, but they are now still in the greenhouse as soil temperature is still too low here in my region.
    Cheers.

Great video! I'll definitely watch the follow ups. It will be interesting to see whether the ones grown inside will maintain their advantage after all that root disturbance.

Cut, hand saw off the bottoms. Of the black wal-mart tubs. Then put each tub into a kiddy pool with 3 holes in bottom. Add home made soil. Catch MORE rain water. Looks nice, so many things to grow, and winter crops. Ginger grows easy.

just before Sping, get a large gray tub, drill many small holes. Add some soil and seeds. Led put on at night to keep warn. weeks later turn upside down. Plants come out to plant.

All the water drips from your AC unit, as (NO poison Fluoride in it.) GREAT for trees. I have a rubbermaid gray can, 2 PVC lines, 1 a shut off valve and a run off line. Fills up fast. Turn tree into MONSTERS growth. NO WATER PROBLEM HERE.

20 to 25 feet PVC line. The can rest on a AC pad, to look nice.

I did not separate them cause I just wasn’t thinking 🤔 oh hey see how it suppose to go lol so anyway they are growing and not sure how often to water them. I do it once a week I hope I succeed. Oh how long did it take for your corn from this video to the next video and their size?

You should have planted all 18 in one container. That's what I do I plant a lot in one because corn can grow beside each other close. Look at a corn field some time and you will see how close they are planted to each other.

Will the corn produce viable seed for replanting? If so would you dry the seed on the cob first or plant newly harvested seed from the cob? How large are those containers you are using?

    • @RobBackyardGardenerr
      @RobBackyardGardenerr  7 років тому

Hey Mark - hello! The corn should produce viable seeds for planting and I'd let them dry out before I would plant them - but use them within a year, preferably. The containers I am using vary from 7 gallons to 10 gallons and no more than 4 plants per pot is ideal - although I started a few more so that I could thin out to the best ones.

MIKE MIKE you need at least a few plants per pot and then several pots to ensure pollination.

When you say you soaked your seeds what exactly do you mean? Can you be a little more specific (I.e. in a paper towel, cotton, or a bowl of water). I’m new at this so I need all the help I can get. Thank you in advance.

    • @RobBackyardGardenerr

VM Perkins in a cup of Luke warm water for 4 hours. Then wrapped in a moist paper towel until I planted them. You could also soak them in a cup overnight but not more than 6-8 hours, preferably.

Ineshia Newton These were 7 gallon pots. I needed to fertilize them every few weeks with a nitrogen based fertilizer and keep them fed plenty of water since corn love both!
